Be sure to understand what you are getting.......2000-04-26

Whether you find this book worth the money will depend on whether you think Ben Hogan was the God of Golf (or at least one member of the Trinity). It is a large-format book, and the quality of the photographs (all black-and white) is excellent. I believe they were all taken on the same day, when Hogan allowed Jules Alexander to accompany him. They pretty much just show Hogan at work on the course, and they do capture who he was. The accompanying comments and essays are interesting, but the photographs are the stars of the book. Just make sure you realize that you are getting a series of photographs taken on one day -- this isn't a retrospective of Hogan's career, and there are no swing sequences or anything like that. If you are a Hogan worshipper, however, this book is a must.

A must-have work for the Hogan fan.......1998-08-03

This book is appropriately titled. The photos are truly classic and do a wonderful job of portraying the on-course Hogan, particularly his steely focus and gorgeous swing. The accompanying text is solid. I most enjoyed Ken Venturi's comments which accompanied the photos, as well as Dan Jenkin's recounting of the man behind the mystique. I was somewhat disappointed that the photos are all from the late 50s, mostly from the same tournament. Yet, this is only a minor issue. Every true Hogan fan should add this work to his or her collection.

Just what I was looking for since years!.......2000-07-27

I am not the only one who is a great fan of Sir Laurence- but maybe the only one aged 16. Since I saw his first film (King Henry V.) I am looking for a book of his works. I was sorry to see that neither in Hungary, nor in England (at least in those shop which I visited) such works are not available. I would be happy if I was one of the first ones to have it on my bookshelf. Theatrical air and enchanting genius - that's what you see in his films. As the subject of the book is so great, I think it is worth to read!

Fascinating Collection of a Fan's Candid Photography .......2004-09-22

This book is one of the most touching things I have ever read about what it's like to be a show business fan. Gary Lee Boas has taken thousands of snapshots of celebrities from Ronald Reagan to Tina Turner, Lynn Fontanne to Loretta Lynn - most of the time taking just one or two pictures at a time!! This is an amazing story about his hobby that anybody who ever had a crush on a movie star or made a celebrity scrapbook, collected memorabilia or even just had a favorite actor will probably see a bit of themselves. As pointed out in the foreward, this was an innocent era, the 60's and 70's (and a few from the early 80's), when stars were much more approachable although it could be argued since most of those pictured here were a bit past their glory days they were perhaps more within reach than had they been box office superstars at the time (although a few here were really big at the time of the photos). From porn stars to Miss Americas, Hollywood icons to commercial pitchmen, Boas discriminated not a bit and took pictures of them all. There are also some moving stories of some of the encounters along the way; Richard Nixon seemingly eager for the company, Hedy Lamarr startled that anyone would recognize her, Elizabeth Montgomery stumbling upon her father's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and asking Gary to take a picture of her with it and send it to her. It does seem though that the publishers deliberately went for the "amateur photo" look and chose many pictures somewhat out of focus, red eyes, and/or wind-blown hair. The dozens of mini pix unidentified on the front and back end pages suggest he had a better average at taking good pictures than the bigger shots in the book would have you believe. It's a one of a kind collection and thanks to Gary the world can see it now.

The breadth of what Boas has done is unmatched, especially in that his quest to photograph stars in the 1970s was earnestly as a fan and not a sa memorabilia dealer. His anecdotes are wonderfully written and occasionally insightful, he should just do a whole book of them.

You're going to love it!.......2002-08-10

Being a star struck fan myself, having taken many photos of my favorites, and having had the good fortune to have my photo taken with many of my favorite stars, many of whom are deceased, I found Gary's book fascinating. It brought back memories and having known Gary personally since 1975, I can vouch for the fact that he is a true, loyal and devoted fan. He and I spent countless hours waiting for favorites including Kate Hepburn when she appeared in Philadelphia theater. Having done so myself, I appreciate all the hours, pleasure and work that Gary put into compiling the photos which grace this book. Celebrity photography can be exciting but also tiring, especially the long hours spent waiting around. Sometimes the bitter winter weather can be a deterrent but even then the fun never goes out of it. So, if you are someone who appreciates the arts and deep down inside harbors dreams of becoming a famous actor, singer, dancer or musician, etc. but the closest you ever came to your dream was meeting the stars, this book is for you. Also, if you are starstruck but never had the time or geographical proximity to see the stars in person, this book is for you, too. Anyway, to all enjoy.

Mr. Boas has taken entertainment history and captured it within the pages of this book. It is truly inspirational for those working towards a career in professional acting as well as the actors themselves. The photos contained within bring back memories for all, I recommend it to all looking to gain an insight into entertainments most viable celebrities, actors, hosts and models!!!

Not much in here that isn't in the documentation, but then again, you don't get any printed documentation with the product so...

I know I like better to read it in a book than on my own prints or on screen.

This book is a very good guide voor system administrators (CNA-level) who are not yet/little familiar with the Novell Zen for Desktops suite. For more advanced users this book can serve as a quick reference with complete coverage of the subject.

In itself Zen is a very powerfull product, and with the use of the linux PXE system I've seen wonderfull things happen. Most of those users started out reading the PXE section in this book.

Regarding the first reviewer; Never judge a book by it's cover.

This is a book likely to be stolen from your coffee table for its delicious romp through the back rooms of history. It's full of bawdy stories and poetry about history's most notorious figures written (mostly) during their lifetimes. You will laugh out loud at the verse about Julius Caesar's promiscuity and the size of King Charles II's "royal sceptre", the humorous epigrams of the great Roman satirists, the wit of Mark Twain, and the sexual superstitions of the past. It more than fills the void left by PLAYBOY when it ended the Classic Ribaldry section years ago because many of the entries are about real people whose names you've heard in history lessons since you were a child. My only complaint about this book is that it isn't longer with even more stories about Napoleon, Thomas Jefferson, and everyone else who seems larger than life. This book adds to their humanity.

In this book Zacks has compiled an extensive collection of facts about how Sex played a major role in history. The more I read, the more amazed I was at how history is cleansed of these realities before we are taught it in school. This book has made me hungry to dig up other books that fill in the blanks in my knowledge of the past.

It seemed to me that history classes took all the life out out of the past leaving a shell of battle dates and wars. I never really cared about that. This book puts back what history teachers (and time) took out: The Smut!

This book is an easy read as it has a lot of humor served in doses of one to two paragraphs. The subject is not wartime strategies...well, not on the battlefield. Cleopatra's seduction of Marc Anthony was better planned than most military skirmishes, and was far more successful with only one moonstruck casualty.

I would recommend this book for anyone who loves history, and even for those that found it tedious in school. It is essentually a fun and frisky romp through the bedrooms of yesteryear.

I found this book to be very humorous and quite amusing. As it said in the prologue, this is the kind of history that adds life and color to the old, cold marble statues that litter antiquity. I've always been very interested in history, but with traditional textbooks, one is often at a loss to explain what many people used to do for fun or even how they propigated themselves. This book holds all the answers to those pressing questions and presents them in a readable format that would hold the attention of even the most burned-out-on-history student

The campaign for mathematical clarity starts here..........2007-07-10

These truths I hold to be self evident:
1) It is unacceptable to provide equations without explaining all the symbols in them.
2) If you explain something to an intelligent person and they still don't understand then it is your fault not theirs.
3) Laziness is the right of the reader, not the author.

In practice you assume your audience knows some things, ellide from previous equations for space and fluency, and provide a glossary. But I have a degree in maths (not stats) and still I can't make head or tail of the first two pages of chapter 2 in the excerpt given. So I will look for a book, article or course that assumes less knowledge on my part.

great introduction to the EM algorithm.......2000-08-10

Geoff McLachlan is well known for his books on discrimination and mixture models. He is an excellent writer who is very thorough in his description of the literature. The EM algorithm is a great invention which dates back to the seminal paper in JRSS by Dempster, Laird and Rubin. It was originally devised to handle likelihood estimation in the face of missing data. Standard applications also include truncated and censored data. Clever application of the missingness in the data structure have allowed it to be applicable to mixture model estimation and other problems where the missing information is not so obvious. It is used for Bayesian estimation, image processing, in random effects models, latent variable structures and log linear models. The technique and its applications are covered in parts of various books on specialized statistical topics or on statistical computing. However, this is the first and only text that is dedicated to the algorithm itself and its wide variety of applications. It is a perfect reference source for the EM algorithm and its various modifications. It provides a thorough and unified treatment for the subject.

Excellent text.......2000-05-18

Excellent text on the EM algorithm. Covers theory as well as a number of applications. Clearly written. Historical accounts and examples make reading delightful. I would have found it sweeter if it covered applications in time series. It was only inevitable that everyone's favorite application couldn't be included because of their sheer multitude.

I guess this is also the only text available on the subject, as of now!

Learn about EM? Read the relevant papers but not this book.......1999-11-21

I tried to read the whole introductive chapter a couple of times but I couldn't understand what is EM about, the used terminology and the basic definitions. The authors say that the book is for theoriticians and practicioners, but I do think it is not appropriate for both categories, unless the reader has been involved in writing papers on this topic. I have enough background knowledge in probability theory and in mathematics but it seems that I have to read all the relevant literature before going a step ahead. In my opinion this book is wide useless for people who do not know EM algorithm.
