Book Description
Sketches of the men who are making our motor industry. Curiously, although our automobile industry was young at the time of this work, its leaders were not young men. The average age of the twenty foremost was a shade under fifty-five. Only three of them were in their forties. Every one of the following twenty men was self-made, most only had moderate schooling and nine had some college training: Harry H. Bassett; Roy D. Chapin; Walter P. Chrysler; William C. Durant; Albert R. Erskine; Harvey S. Firestone; Henry Ford; Charles D. Hastings; Frederick J. Haynes; John Hertz; Edward S. Jordan; Charles F. Ketterling; Alvan Macauley; Charles S. Mott; Charles W. Nash; R.E. Olds; Alfred P. Sloan; H.H. Timken; Walter C. White; John N. Willys.

Green Cultural Studies was selected as a Choice magazine Outstanding Academic Title of 1999.
From Book News:.......1999-07-08
From Booknews: A work of cultural criticism arguing that destroying the boundaries between animal and human, between nature and technology, as mainstream green critics propose, would promote culture over and against the needs of nature. Offers instead a new way of thinking about difference. Also contends that the differences between culture and nature impact the treatment not only of nature, but also of human groups currently coded as race, class, gender, and sexuality. No index. Review from CHOICE May, 99.......1999-06-12
"Because it is one of the first sustained studies to use the analytical tools of cultural studies and to focus entirely on the environment, this volume is an important contribution to the literature. Hochman engages the greening of cultural studies, and in so doing strenuously foregrounds nature. In these highly adroit analyses, nature stops being backdrop and becomes primary subject. The author looks at many texts, including primary works such as Women in Love, Deliverance (the film), Beloved, and Silence of the Lambs and such scholarly discussions as Jacques Derrida's Of Grammatology (Ch, Jul '77) and Donna Haraway's Simians, Cyborgs, and Women (1991), the latter (along with Alexander Wilson's The Culture of Nature, Ch, Dec'92) a theoretical antagonist that informs Hochman's study. Ultimately, Hochman rails against the theorization of nature, insisting that the natural world is more worthy by far than to be commodified and diminished. Though Hochman at times indulges in overly sophisticated and ingenious readings and portmanteaus ("worldnature," "culturescape") and provides no clear rationale for separating the bibliography into two parts, this groundbreaking book is highly recommended for all upper division undergraduate and graduate programs in literature and environmental studies. It should greatly widen the appeal of ecocriticism.-B. Adler

Book Description
This is an updated edition of this successful study, first published in 1996. In addition to updates on points of fact, new to this edition are the following:
1) An expanded section on working RVers which includes a profile of a working RVer in her seventies and two RVers who do volunteer work at the CARE center in the home park of the Escapees RV club in Livingston, TX. The CARE center (Continued Assistance for Retired Escapees) provides daycare and some nursing care for RVers who are too ill or elderly to travel but who want to stay in the RVing community. CARE is run mostly by volunteers, as a result the costs are exceptionally low and there is a strong sense of bonding between the residents, the people who work there, and the RVers who stay at the Livingston park for a while.
2) A list of websites that provides resources and information for RVers and people who want to start RVing. The list includes sources for RVing families, single RVers, people who are interested in a particular kind of RVing style (eg "boondockers"), people who want to rent an RV, organizations for RVers with special interests (African Americans, former military, etc.).
3) An appendix (Appendix 5) that provides information, resources and suggestions for people who think that they might want to try serious RVing but need help getting started.
4) Updated information on Canadian provincial residence rules for eligibility for inclusion in provincial medical care programs.
Customer Reviews:
Too dated and technical.......2007-09-17
I felt that this book was too dated to be of much use. Apparently much of the research took place 10-15 years ago and I must think that there have been significant changes in RVing in the elapsed time.
Rving Seniors.......2007-06-27
I finally understand why I want to be an RVer! The book was informative and the subject matter was thoroughly investigated. I'm passing the book around to my children so they will understand why their crazy Mom wants to hit the road as a Senior RVer.
A Scholarly Approach to RV's AND to Retirement.......2000-04-24
As a newcomer to the world of RV's I found this book both interesting and disquieting. Many of my intial observations as I moved through RV parks in the West last fall were confirmed. Others were better understood. But better yet, for a retired engineer, they were quantified. How do I compare to others in age, money, marital status? Are my thoughts as I select a park similar to others? How many people travel with dog and/or cats? How much does it cost?
It also helps me understand what motivates people who stay at Quartzite or the Slabs. (Cultural/societal phenomenons that are hard to believe.) It draws clearer pictures of the aging couples I see and what brought them to where they are. It also shows where they're going in their life. It describes "trailer trash" in loving terms.
In other words, its a study of retirement and eventually death. Its uniqueness is that it focus on RVers, specifically the fulltimers.
The scholarly style may put some readers off but in my opinion, if you are thinking of selling the farm and fulltiming, you need this book before you buy that 40 foot motorhome. Or if you just want to head south in the winter, or camp by the lake near home you should have this book to understand the people around you. And even if you don't plan to have an RV ever, this will tell you about retired life, maybe more than you realy want to know.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for the price.......2000-03-12
This little book comes packed with info on the upstart Aberrant faction. It has a lot of information on the people behind it and a semi detective story with background on the Jennifer Slider murder: suspects and motives. And while it doesn't have any extra systems or backgrounds this makes sense considering how long they've been around. It also tells you how to play an aberrant character in any campaign.
Aberrant supplements shed some light on the world........2000-02-12
The world that is the Aberrant storytelling game has recieved a shot in the arm by this supplement, Expose Aberrant. Delving into aspects of the Aberrant faction, we are shown evidence of a Utopian conspiracy of incredible bredth. Perfect for any storyteller who runs an anti-Utopia chronicle, of for those who simply want to fluch out the world that they play in. My only complaint would be that the book is too short. A mere 24 pages, this book can't quite cover every aspect to a satisfactory extent. If you do not run Aberrant campaigns, or if you want better value out of a book, this isn't for you. If you are intrigued by the Aberrant faction, and don't mind the length, then this is a solid expansion of the game.

Book Description
If you've ever wondered how Linux carries out the complicated tasks assigned to it by the IP protocols -- or if you just want to learn about modern networking through real-life examples -- Understanding Linux Network Internals is for you.
Like the popular O'Reilly book, Understanding the Linux Kernel, this book clearly explains the underlying concepts and teaches you how to follow the actual C code that implements it. Although some background in the TCP/IP protocols is helpful, you can learn a great deal from this text about the protocols themselves and their uses. And if you already have a base knowledge of C, you can use the book's code walkthroughs to figure out exactly what this sophisticated part of the Linux kernel is doing.
Part of the difficulty in understanding networks -- and implementing them -- is that the tasks are broken up and performed at many different times by different pieces of code. One of the strengths of this book is to integrate the pieces and reveal the relationships between far-flung functions and data structures. Understanding Linux Network Internals is both a big-picture discussion and a no-nonsense guide to the details of Linux networking. Topics include:
- Key problems with networking
- Network interface card (NIC) device drivers
- System initialization
- Layer 2 (link-layer) tasks and implementation
- Layer 3 (IPv4) tasks and implementation
- Neighbor infrastructure and protocols (ARP)
- Bridging
- Routing
- ICMP
Author Christian Benvenuti, an operating system designer specializing in networking, explains much more than how Linux code works. He shows the purposes of major networking features and the trade-offs involved in choosing one solution over another. A large number of flowcharts and other diagrams enhance the book's understandability.
Customer Reviews:
The best Linux networking software book to start with.......2006-10-15
I have read a number of books on the TCP/IP protocols and their implementations; both the original Berkeley (BSD) Unix TCP/IP stack and the Linux TCP/IP stack. I must say that this is the best of all of them. This book makes the subject very approachable for the newcomer to network protocol software but the explanations are detailed enough to satisfy an old dog like me. Benvenuti's writing style is clear and very readable. He liberally provides diagrams to illustrate the concepts he is discussing.
My only fault with the book is that the transport layer protocols (UDP and TCP) are not covered. Benvenuti provides a list of important areas of the networking software that are not covered in the book but gives other references for most of these. I hope that he is working on a volume 2 to cover these areas.
I would sum up by saying that if you want to learn about the Linux networking software or network protocol software in general, start with this book. This book will give you the background to understand other, less well written books that cover the remaining networking software topics.
TAKE THE LINUX NETWORK TOUR!.......2006-07-05
Are you a newcomer who already has some knowledge of networking? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Christian Benvenuti, has done an outstanding job of writing practical guide that represents a good starting point for anyone willing to learn more about the Linux kernal internals.
Benvenuti, begins by introducing you to the basic knowledge you need to understand the rest of the book comfortably. Then, the author will show you how and when network devices are initialized and registered with the kernal. He also puts into context all of the features that can influence the path of a packet inside the kernal, and to give you an idea of the big picture. Next, he looks at the link layer or L2 counterpart of routing: bridging. The author continues by explaining the main drawbacks of version 4 of the IP protocol and shows you how IPv6 tries to address them. He also discusses how the router and the application host know who each other are. Finally, he introduces the routing process, and how it plays a central role in the Linux networking code.
In this most excellent book, the author shows you how Linux carries out the complicated tasks assigned to it by the IP protocols. More importantly, one of the strengths of this book is that it integrates the pieces and shows you the relationships between far flung functions and data structures.
Book Description
This unorthodox scholarly work dissects the ghosts of history in order to analyze how the past—both recent and distant—haunts posterity, and in what ways the present disfigures the image of times gone by. The book presents a novel history of Communism from the perspective of its collapse, and inspects the world beyond the Fall in the distorting mirror of its imagined prehistory. Using a series of strange and darkly ironic stories, the subsequent chapters provide a close exploration of some of the essential objects of historical study: the name, the date, the dead, the relic, the pantheon, the court, the underworld, and the underground. The tension between vast distances, both in space and time, that Retroactive Justice covers, and the extremely focused analyses, provide an unexpected experience of writing and rewriting, visioning and revisioning history.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing historical travelogue.......2005-05-31
Those who still try to understand our recent common past will not be able to find a better and more unusual book than the "Prehistory of Post-Communism", a dark Swiftian time-travel, which criss-crosses long centuries in order to illuminate that what is just left behind us. The reader enters a labyrinth, in which the very same protagonists reappear time and time again from different perspectives, taking on different masks and roles in the course of their doomed unheroic fight for and against historic destiny. The author has borrowed from history, anthropology, sociology, and philosophy in order to write a book of unusually high and strange literary qualities. The unknown author is the late W. S. Sebald's scholarly companion: his free associations hide a conscious and strictly organized formal construct. It is a real intellectual joy to read this learned work, one of the best, and certainly one of the most unusual historical books published in the last years.

Book Description
This magisterial book provides an analysis of the course of Western intellectual history between A.D. 400 and 1400. The book is arranged in two parts: the first surveys the comparative modes of thought and varying success of Byzantine, Latin-Christian, and Muslim cultures, and the second takes the reader from the twelfth-century revival of learning to the high Middle Ages and beyond, the period in which the vibrancy of Western intellectual culture enabled it to stamp its imprint well beyond the frontiers of Christendom.
Customer Reviews:
Dry and uninsightful, but somewhat useful nevertheless.......2005-01-01
My interest in obscure and esoteric subjects frequently leads me to read books written by academics, with whom I am sympathetic, since I am one myself. So it is unpleasant for me to concede that most academics can't write for beans. The current author's work is a nearly perfect example of this very sad fact, which says so much about the waning intellectual vigor of our age. The title provides a sufficient clue that this is a dry and plodding tome, and this impression is confirmed by each and every page, on which lengthy and opaque sentences coil about one another in pointless complexity without ever giving birth to a new idea or an important insight. The most challenging aspect of this book is not the subtle but intriguing new ideas its author places before us - since there are none of these to think about. Rather, the difficulty arises from the fact that the author's style is as unappealing as a cardboard sandwich.
Instead of new insights, she gives us only an exhaustive (and exhausting!) summary of the major books and intellectual traditions of the Middle Ages. And although she provides a slim but marginally satisfactory historical context, she never places medieval influences in new relationships that clarify their importance. Instead, this book grinds on like some college term paper on steroids. It is full of citations, paraphrases and summaries, but it is completely unstained by original thought. This underscores the dark side of academia's culture: "publish or perish".
Among its flaws, the book reflects a surprisingly poor understanding of the world that preceded 500AD, and the author's grasp of Christianity -- an omnipresent medieval theme -- is brittle and impoverished. Oh, the facts are there, all right, but there is no deep understanding of them. Also, the visual arts are not discussed at all -- a major flaw that must reflect the author's failure to recognize their relevance. And although science is mentioned, the author does not understand it well, so she can not fully appreciate its effects. This is an extremely serious shortcoming.
Still, the book has value. Having read it, I feel much better prepared to delve into the source material, whose scope I now better understand. And the author's summaries of medieval literature are among her best. She has an authentic gift for appreciating literature and for sharing her enthusiasm with her readers. As a result, I look forward to reading these works, which would not otherwise have interested me.
Finally, do not be deceived by the fact that a few commercial "reviewers" have said that this book is an "important intellectual achievement". These claims tell us more about the publishers' need to recoup their costs than about the book's merits. There is absolutely nothing in this book that will noticeably alter the world of ideas. And the alleged "central thesis" -- that our modern age stands upon the Middle Ages more than on the preceding Roman world -- must surely be a joke. To her credit, the author devotes almost no attention to this preposterous claim, and so I doubt that the reviewers actually read the book. After all, no thoughtful person can fail to see that the ancient world profoundly influenced the Middle Ages, which in turn influenced the Europe that emerged from them. As a result, these influences are intermingled, and there is no conceivable method by which the modern influence of Cicero, for example, can be separated from that of Ockham. In fact, the metaphor underlying this "thesis" is broken. Intellectual traditions do not stand upon a foundation as a building does. Instead, they are a river whose water inseparably mixes the contribution of its many enriching tributaries. We can appreciate them all, without pretending that one is the "foundation" and the others are not.
Fascinating and well-researched work.......2001-03-07
Colish's book is a tour-de-force in the Yale Intellectual History of the West. Her thesis, that the foundation of the Western intellectual mindset and tradition really began in earnest in the Middle Ages rathern than Greek antiquity is an interesting one, and one for which I beleive she gives good arguments. The way she suggests that the ideals of Greece were filtered through Rome and Latin Christianity befire they reached "Euorope" as we know it today comes off convincingly. For her, it is a matter of the development of ideas counting for more than their sources; as a historian, she knows that things didn't have to turn out the way that they did. Colish fleshes this out very nicely in the section of the book where she gives an evenhanded and scholarly account of the parallel cultures of the Latin West, Byzantium, and Islam. Her work in this volume shows that she has thought long and hard about these issues, and her conclusions deserve close attention.
In addition to her excellent discussion of European Medieval intellectual thought, Colish goes into the vernacular literature and day-to-day culture of the Medieval world and proves again that the "Dark Ages" were anything but in some very important ways. Her treatment of theology in dialogue with Medieval law, science, and literature is nothing less than inspired: as a theologian, I found myself wondering how Colish, a historian, had found the time to track down all the relevant arguements, and how she had been able to explain such byzantine issues as the Nominalist controversy and lay-investiture in so clear a manner. Read this book (not really for beginners) in conjunction with or immediately following Cantor's Civilization in the Middle Ages, and you will have a firm grasp of the entire span of the Medieval era, its ideas, culture, politics, religion, and heritage. A wonderful book.
well-written and informative overview.......1999-01-04
As an amateur history-enthusiast I greaty enjoyed reading this book (twice) for its well-written and generally clear overview of how Western thought developed throughout early and later medieval periods. Starting with brief discussions of the Apologists and the Latin Church Fathers, the topics raised are discussed in a even-handed manner, although i cannot really judge the treatment of the theological debates. I found the latter (for instance on the Trinity) quite hard-going but that is not necessarily the authors's fault. After all, the subject is complex and deals with theological and philosophical subtleties that now hardly seem to merit the passionate debates and the importance attached to it then. At the same time it is clear that these discussions did have a major impact on European foundations and deeply shaped the further course of Western intellectual thought. The part on vernacular literature (Celtic, Old Norse, German, French and English) i enjoyed very much and i think it really added value. Interesting and useful also was the comparison with Byzantine and Islamic cultures. A very good point was the discussion on diversity that became the hallmark of European civilizations. I sometimes missed the economic/political/social context in which these intellectual developments took place, but again that is not necessarily meant as a criticism. Here one would need to take some other studies which would complement this one. The book sets out to show Medieval roots of Western thought and, i think, it does so very well. Useful and not only for beginners.

Book Description
Why are there still so few female scientists? Despite the scientific ethos of universalism and inclusion, women continue to experience real social inequities as they struggle to gain recognition in the scientific community. Based on extensive interviews and backed by quantitative analysis, this compelling work exposes the hidden barriers, subtle exclusions, and unwritten rules that confront women at every juncture along the scientific career path--from childhood to retirement. Through vivid personal accounts the authors offer an illuminating and sobering view of the effects these obstacles have on the personal and professional lives of women. They argue that women can succeed in the scientific workplace by successfully managing "social capital," those networks and relationships scientists rely on for professional support and new ideas. This benchmark volume is vital reading for all scientists and social scientists--both male and female--and for women considering a scientific career.

Best in class for women in science books.......2006-07-07
I probably have read every book on women in science for the last thirty years or so, and I regret that so many are data-rich to the point of unreadability. Athena Unbound is a refreshing exception; it delves into situations of women who marry and have children, situations of women whose mentors do not mentor them, and many other difficulties women experience when trying to become and stay scientists. I read this one all the way through in one sitting, then read it again slower to savor all of its insights. I recommend it very highly, up there with the older but still zingy Vivian Gornick, Women in Science.
Athena Unbound.......2001-12-03
I read this book with tremendous interest. The stories it contains resonated in me or seemed to fit friends and colleagues. I have given Athena Unbound to family members upon graduation (from engineering school) and to my own women Chemistry students for graduation. I think it is important for my students to know what problems may lie before them and how they may be side-stepped. This book does a great job of outlining what these problems may be. Science is still a man's world. Forewarned is forearmed!
More like a research paper than a book.......2001-05-14
I picked this book for my engineering ethics class thinking how great it would be to read about the experience of other females in engineering. To my dismay the book was slow and repetitive. The books studies white American women in science. The data through out the book is presented in a rough research paper like format. This is not a peasant to read book. If you can identify with white American women in the scientific field, then read this book. Otherwise the focus of this book is too narrow and the authors of the book does not present any practical solutions to the problems encountered by women in the scientific field.
Great Introduction to Subject.......2001-04-28
This book is one of the best books I have read on the subject of women in science. It will appeal to the general public, who tire quickly of statistic upon statistic. Instead, this book gives a broad overview of the gender issues surrounding science and approached to resolve these issues. Should be required reading in any gender or science history class, I think, though the focus is on contemporary issues not historical documentation.
