Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 21st Century Book of Acts.......2007-10-21

I consider this one of the best books that I have ever read. While reading it I had the feeling that I was reviewing a 21st Century account of the Book of Acts: very practical testimonies of what God is able to do in the workplace and in our lives if we just trust Him and keep our faith in Jesus Christ. A must read for all christians that consider themselves kingdom embassadors or kingdom entrepreneurs for Christ. The author Gunnar Olson is also founder of the International Christian Chamber of Commerce (www.iccc.org). I also suggest reading books by Myles Munroe for a deeper understanding of kingdom principles.

Book Description

Bobby Jones will stand forever unique in the world of golf, and perhaps even unique in the world of sport. He remained an amateur throughout his amazing career and found himself on the pinnacle of all golf achievements-The Grand Slam-a feat not duplicated by any other golfer to this day. This accomplishment might have constituted a seat to rest on for the ordinary man but, for Bobby, it merely served as a springboard to launch a myriad of other extraordinary achievements and experiences. Throughout his life, Jones remained the consummate gentleman, observed by his contemporaries to be comprised of equal proportions of "courtesy, consideration, humanity, and humor."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great photo essays.......2006-03-24

This is a wonderful book for those interested in a photographic journal of Jones' life. Many images are rare and this book is a treat to read. Jones' career record is also recorded, which, as strange as it may sound, is hard to come by in one book, as most focus only on his major championships. Matthew has done a great job capturing the man and the player and all I can say is that in my 30 years of golf and research into golf's history, you won't find a better single volume that graphically portrays Jones. His return to St. Andrews in 1936 is particularly poignant.

5 out of 5 stars Fun book.......1999-12-13

An excellent book and the perfect gift for a golfer. Anyone that appreciates the history of golf will love it.

4 out of 5 stars Good content, a little disorganized........1999-10-08

This book includes anything and everything on Jones, his family, O.B. Keeler etc. And the book itself is divided into several sections for the various stages of Jones' life and career. There is a great deal of interesting material presented within. My only criticism is that the book is frankly a little tough to follow at times. The writing seems to meander in a stream-of-consciousness manner, somewhat like a "what I did this year" letter from an aged relative. The photographs (which are the main reason many will buy this book) are dispersed without much of a theme, and there is also some repetition of the photos. Many photos include no captions, leaving you to wonder what the significance might be. The random arrangement of the photos almost give one the impression you are leafing through a scrap book. Don't get me wrong. There is a lot to be had here, it's just not the most polished piece of work you're going to run into.

5 out of 5 stars Perspective and appreciation for the greatest of them all.......1998-08-30

Any one from recent generations wanting to learn about Bobby Jones needs to get this book. You will learn of Jones the golfer, family man, gentleman, academic, and lawyer. Jones was a winner in golf and life but never waivered from his philosophy of "playing it as it lies". A collection of stories and photos unmatched in other Jones biographies. The manner in which Jones dealt with his success, and then his disabling illness is a lesson for all.

-- L'EDITORE

'Building a Telephony System with Asterisk' takes you step-by-step through the process of installing and configuring Asterisk. It shows you how to make a deployment plan, and how to create a dial plan. The book also presents example configurations for using Asterisk in three different scenarios: for small and home offices, small businesses, and Hosted PBX. With an engaging style and excellent way of presenting information, this book makes a complicated subject very easy to understand. This book is suitable for the novice and those new to Asterisk and telephony. Telephony or Linux experience will be helpful, but not required.

3 out of 5 stars Telephony Systems with Asterisk.......2007-08-02

I was hoping that this book would be more specific. I needed better real world examples of how to build a workable dial plan. While there were numerous examples, this book fell painfully short in teaching the theory of context location. An example is on page 77 where the author states
"We simply place each handset into one of two contexts, based upon what number we want them to be able to dial." Which configuration files contain the contexts that we need to place the extensions into? There are other similar examples. What this author should have done is detail every configuration file involved showing exactly what was happening and where. Now, I understand there are more that one flavor of dial plan. However, statements as shown above aren't even close to what is expected of a subject matter expert. I give it a 3 because it is of help to beginners but it won't get the job done standing alone..

                            4 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2007-01-11

I found this book very helpful. Sometimes it felt a little disorganized, but it did help me get off the ground with Asterisk. The free book from O'Reilly is also a great reference. All that being said, I would still purchase this book if I had it to do over.

                            3 out of 5 stars Too simplistic.......2006-12-03

This is a good book for ASterisk/VoIP beginners only. I was expecting much more than this. It was written in a very simplistic way, which is good for beginners no question. It doens't provide any form of Troubleshooting, even for the most common known problems (example: NAT)

3 out of 5 stars It's good for what it is........2006-11-19

Don't go about thinking this is a book for someone who wants to know what Asterisk is all about. The book is very specific to business applications and it does not treat more than a few configurations and case studies. It's very understandable, but it's not a book to read if you want to understand PBX design.

                            The Book
I want to start this review, with saying that, when I finished reading the book, I say to my mum: "Now, I wish, I had this book at the beginning of my Asterisk career". "It would make things much easier". When I came into Asterisk, I don't ever touch a Linux machine; don't even know what apt-get means. And more: I really, really don't know were to start with Asterisk.

In 160 pages Barrie and David managed to put a lot of the information you can find on the internet in a logic order and created a good starting point for learning to work with Asterisk. The easy to read text and the overview of functions helps you to get a good knowledge of Asterisk and creates a good foundation of your Asterisk knowledge.

They put in a few complete samples for an up and running system, backing-up the system, how to secure your Asterisk box and also put in a summary of words you want to know if you get into Asterisk.

Here is a summary of things you get to know from the book:
                            * Install, configure, and deploy Asterisk
                            * Create a dialplan that suits your needs
                            * Build a fully-featured telephony system
                            * Monitor, record, and log calls
                            * Install and use Asterisk@Home
                            * Backup, secure, and maintain Asterisk
                            * Use example configurations for different requirements

                            Barrie and David, thanks!

                            Book Description

The 1960s continue to be the subject of passionate debate and political controversy, a touchstone in struggles over the meaning of the American past and the direction of the American future. Amid the polemics and the myths, making sense of the Sixties and its legacies presents a challenge. This book is for all those who want to take it on. Because there are so many facets to this unique and transformative era, this volume offers multiple approaches and perspectives.

The first section gives a lively narrative overview of the decade's major policies, events, and cultural changes. The second presents ten original interpretative essays from prominent historians about significant and controversial issues from the Vietnam War to the sexual revolution, followed by a concise encyclopedia articles organized alphabetically. This section could stand as a reference work in itself and serves to supplement the narrative. Subsequent sections include short topical essays, special subjects, a brief chronology, and finally an extensive annotated bibliography with ample information on books, films, and electronic resources for further exploration.

With interesting facts, statistics, and comparisons presented in almanac style as well as the expertise of prominent scholars, The Columbia Guide to America in the 1960s is the most complete guide to an enduringly fascinating era.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Purview Of the Fascinating 1960s!.......2003-11-24

Aging baby-boomers like myself can rest more easily; herein one discovers a wonderful effort, which succeeds marvelously in accurately and faithfully recounting and retelling the somewhat convoluted and always multi-currented tenor of the times for the 1960s. Given the massive neo-conservative effort to discredit the theoretical positions and social ethos of the sixties generation, it is terrific to have such a carefully researched and meticulously documented effort as is "The Columbia Guide To America In The 1960s" to give greater voice and renewed verve and credibility to the ideas and theoretical positions that arose from the ongoing new-left critique of mainstream society that emanated from the events of that storied decade. Authors David Farber and Beth Bailey are both academics with considerable expertise in the area of contemporary 20th century history, and this aplomb with the facts and the sense of the times is fascinating to plow through on both an intellectual and also an emotional level. This is scholarship well done!

It does one well to remember that the sixties decade and what came out of it are both subjects of serious disagreements as well as continuing controversy, given the attempt by the right wing to define the ideas stemming from those times as bogus and discredited. Therefore, making sense of all that is brought back to the surface in this book represents a considerable effort, but it is hard to deny such an effort to make sense of a time with so many crosscurrents and so much social, cultural, and political turbulence is well worth the effort. Therefore, the book is organized around several different perspectives and approaches. In the first section, we are presented with a well-developed and intricately organized narrative that superbly covers the waterfront of the era's most significant events, policies, and changes. The second part of the book is organized around ten different essay efforts by well-regarded contemporary historians on various salient aspects of the decade, ranging from the counterculture, the civil rights movement, the sexual revolution, and of course, the war in Vietnam.

The net effect of the combined first and second sections is to give us a much more comprehensive and detailed understanding of both the issues and events on the one hand, and how they fit into the mosaic of the sixties, on the other hand. Subsequent section also add to the overall contribution of the book, by giving us shorter essays on other aspects of the era, subjects of particualr interest to each of the authors, and a terrific extended bibliography for those of us interested in further exploring the eddies and currents of various aspects of the decade in question. It fairly well smashes revisionist interpretations of the era into smithereens by exposing them for the solipsistic efforts at refashioning the truth that they are, and does so while educating and entertaining us on an number of levels at one. This is a great book, and one I can recommend to anyone interested in learning more about the most fascinating decade of the 20th century. Enjoy!

The result of four years of rewriting, revising, and updating, this new edition includes reams of shocking new data about the confrontation between the Mi'kmaq and European civilizations. This re-examination of original historical records casts doubts on early military and political figures now honored as heroes and questions who the savages really were.

Power, sex, violence and kindness: these four broad-spectrum categories encompass much of human behavior, so it's only fitting that they're also the primary subject material for Frans de Waal's (The Ape and The Sushi Master) book Our Inner Ape. The few (but deeply detailed) chapters are a mesmerizing read that spans biology, child psychology, postmodern theorists and fundamental morality, using tales of stern chimps, and sexy bonobos to examine humans' place between them. In the process, he examines why we need to know our place in the world, how our body language communicates feelings, and where the roots of empathy lie in mammalian life.

De Waal's respect for both his readers and his research subjects come shining through in the simple clarity he uses when describing both the endless sex of bonobo apes and the heartrending violence occasionally present in chimp hierarchal structure. By illustrating his points with a mixture of straight-from-research experiences and jokes at the expense of modern politicians, he keeps his ideas compelling for anyone with a basic understanding of evolutionary science without drifting towards the academic drone that could be expected of by a researcher of his experience.

You won't find specific conclusions concerning human nature, but instead a gentle, almost rambling look at two primate species with vastly different social networks and how, perhaps, humanity can learn from each to our benefit. A few of de Waal's lovely duotone photos (My Family Album: 30 Years of Primate Photography grace the end of the book, featuring close-up shots of the folks he's been writing about--chimps like Yeroen, Nikkie and Mama, and bonobo Kuif and adopted daughter Roosje are downright thrilling to see after reading such interesting stories about their lives. Book Description

From "one of the world's greatest experts on primate behavior" (Desmond Morris) comes a look at the most provocative aspects of human nature-power, sex, violence, kindness, and morality-through our closest cousins. For nearly twenty years, Frans De Waal has studied both the famously aggressive chimpanzee and the egalitarian, matriarchal bonobo, two species whose DNA is nearly identical to ours. The result is an engrossing narrative that reveals what their behavior can teach us about ourselves.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Similarities.......2007-09-19

Our Inner Ape compares the social behavior of apes to that of humans. It focuses mainly on bonobos and chimpanzees although various monkeys and other apes make brief appearances throughout. This book provides a large number of ape stories, many of which are drawn from Frans de Waal's own experiences as a primatologist, to give an overview of power, sex, violence and kindness in primate communities.

I enjoyed the stories given in this book; I did not realize that apes were either as violent or as compassionate as de Waal portrays them. Many of the parallels that de Waal draws between ape behavior and human behavior were intriguing to me (such as the basic roles of empathy and reciprocity in stabilizing social communities). I found this book to be an instructive read on ape-human similarities; de Waal's presentation of the human as the "bi-polar ape" provides much food for thought. I would recommend this book to others.

4 out of 5 stars OUR SOCIAL CONSCIENCE.......2007-08-14

The great enjoyment of this book lies in its clear uncomplicated language. It gives us the opportunity of reflection on our place on earth. This may be the occasion to put our 'uniqueness' in perspective. Revelations on our biological heritage give us the comfort of knowing about our inherent endless potential for adaption in a rapidly changing physical and social environment. Such thoughts should give us an optimistic outlook into the future.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Important book.......2007-08-09

This book is an important tool in understanding who we are as a species. It is written for the intelligent layman who does not suffer from religious hangups about our evolution. It is written in an engaging style by a serious and important scientist who makes the reader share his love for his chimp, bonobo and human subjects. This book makes me more determined than ever to seek my own sense of "spirituality" by finding more eays to enjoy being a primate, and the more bonobo like the better!

4 out of 5 stars Our Inner Ape.......2007-07-28

A strength of this book is that the author develops concepts which are
unknown by the reading public. For instance, bonobos understand and can
empathize with each others' needs. Coalitions of chimps are key for leaders
to develop allies. Sometimes, death is the ultimate price to reach the
top. The author believes that if chimps had guns and knew how to use them-
they would be violent enough to do so.

The book makes for interesting reading; however, I don't whether or not
the conclusions reached can be mapped to human behavior.

This is an excellent book written by a knowledgeable professor. It is very interesting, and clearly shows through his research that we still have a lot of ape in us. It is a book that should not be missed.

It's no secret that humans and apes share a host of traits, from the tribal communities we form to our irrepressible curiosity. We have a common ancestor, scientists tell us, so it's natural that we act alike. But not all of these parallels are so appealing: the chimpanzee, for example, can be as vicious and manipulative as any human. Yet there's more to our shared primate heritage than just our violent streak. In Our Inner Ape, Frans de Waal, one of the world's great primatologists and a renowned expert on social behavior in apes, presents the provocative idea that our noblest qualities--generosity, kindness, altruism--are as much a part of our nature as are our baser instincts. After all, we share them with another primate: the lesser-known bonobo. As genetically similar to man as the chimpanzee, the bonobo has a temperament and a lifestyle vastly different from those of its genetic cousin. Where chimps are aggressive, territorial, and hierarchical, bonobos are gentle, loving, and erotic (sex for bonobos is as much about pleasure and social bonding as it is about reproduction). Frans de Waal has spent the last two decades studying our closest primate relations, and his observations of each species in Our Inner Ape encompass the spectrum of human behavior. This is an audacious book, an engrossing discourse that proposes thought-provoking and sometimes shocking connections among chimps, bonobos, and those most paradoxical of apes, human beings.
