Book Description
E. H. Carr was one of the most influential theorists of international relations, and his works, notably The Twenty Year's Crisis (1939), are widely read by students of the subject. He is generally regarded as a hard-nosed, right-wing political realist, but Charles Jones' study reveals him as a much more radical figure. By examining the political context in which he wrote, and the ruthless ways in which he sought to persuade his contemporaries in a period of national crisis, this book offers a radical reinterpretation of a major theorist of international relations.
Customer Reviews:
Re-reading Carr.......2000-09-26
E.H. Carr has for long been regarded as a canonical realist writer, at least in the field of international relations. However, in recent years, and particularly in Britain, this interpretation of this profligate author has been called into question. writers such as Andrew linklater and Ken Booth have helped to highlight the more radical side to his writings, but the fullest expression yet of this view, this re-reading, can be found in Jones' book. By highlighting Carr's reliance on Mannheims sociology of knowledge, and by emphasising his belief in the dialectic between realism and idealism, as well as charting his tempestuos relationship with the British establishment, Jones has written a persuasive and highly stimulating account.

Book Description
More than half of all Americans believe UFOs and aliens exist. How did extraterrestrials come to be so real for so many? Toby Smith tracks down our fascination with extraterrestrials, showing how Roswell became the fiber out of which all flying saucer and alien stories were woven in science fiction films and television programs, especially in the late 1940s and the 1950s. It all began outside Roswell on a July night in 1947. A nearby military base's official announcement of the recovery of a crashed flying saucer went out to radio stations and newspapers nationwide--including The New York Times. The military's quick retraction came too late. The government had already said extraterrestrials existed.
Today visitors are taken to the crash site in a vehicle with license plates reading Believe. And believe people do. But why? Statements of belief in extraterrestrials from such diverse and noteworthy people as General Douglas MacArthur, Carl Jung, and Elvis Presley firmly fixed the place of aliens in modern American culture.
Smith not only examines movies and the media to understand the prominence of aliens in our contemporary culture, he also shows how New Mexico and Wright Field in Ohio, where the bodies of the aliens were reportedly taken, remain particularly fertile spawning grounds for UFO stories. Once extraterrestrial visitors landed (or didn't land) in Roswell, the notion we're not alone in the universe quickly became part of American popular culture.
Explores how films, TV, and books fed the public's fascination with aliens starting in the 1950s.
Customer Reviews:
Rushton is Wrong.......2002-07-23
I'm afraid Teddy Rushton is a little misleading with his review. He either doesn't read much, saying this was one of the most disappointing books he's read, or the author ran over his dog. I don't get it. To say that this book was pasted from internet information is absurd. This book is original from beginning to end. Little Gray Men isn't a history lesson about the Roswell incident, it is a look at the Alien culture that came after the supposed landing. I don't think Rushton got it. I'm not sure what Rushton has against New Mexico either. I've been there as well and think it is a very pretty state. I wasn't robbled or held up. Did he get a hangnail, a nosebleed? We don't know, but his personal attact on this author is not justified nor is the grade he gives this book. I found Little Gray Men comical and highly entertaining. Smith's look at the pop culture that has been created from the alien invasion of America is observant. I'd like to know when Rushton will be back in New Mexico, so I can meet him there and show him to a bookstore.
Ros-well Done.......2002-07-19
Believe, baby. Believe that the key event in all history happened on July 4 (or maybe July 5; sources disagree), 1947, and that most homo sapiens still don't know about it. Screaming from night skies outside of Roswell fell ... something. A UFO, stated an early radio report, man's first contact with extra-terrestrials. And our own government has stashed the bodies, deduced Those Who Believe.
So began Roswell's auspicious ascent to synonymy with a UFO obsession that would color conspiracies and entertainment for the remainder of the century. From the so-called Roswell Incident, too, Toby Smith's Little Gray Men takes off (hee hee) on a frequently funny pastiche of New Mexico's oddest socio-phenomenon.
Smith displays a Roswell known and unknown -- how many of the attendees at 50th Anniversary bash Encounter '97 had ever heard of formerly neighboring town Blackdom? -- on his tour through a pop culture mecca's half-century. Personalities haunt these pages with rocketeer Robert Goddard, sci-fi scribe Jack Williamson and golfer Nancy Lopez rubbing shoulders with nonplussed, bumper sticker-hawking locals. And even Governor "Toke" Johnson makes a cameo to state he knows what happened, but ain't tellin'.
Mr. Smith amuses throughout, admirably tracing public consciousness of Roswell from New Yorker cartoons to incessant "X-Files" subplots (subtract a few points, though, for omitting mention of a certain Chevy Malibu in the classic flick Repo Man). Over-embellishment is sometimes problematic, but wackiness definitely predominates.
And the Incident? That's easy: experimental military technology; nothing more, nothing less. Obviously.
A dull gray book.......2000-07-05
This is one of the most disappointing books I have read in years; Smith's problem seems to be that he was fascinated by space movies as a 10-year-old and has never gotten beyond that stage.
The book reads as if it was a cut-and-paste Internet collection of everything imaginable that might relate to the so-called "Roswell Incident" -- supposedly the crash of a flying saucer near Roswell in 1947 -- compiled with a studious avoidance of anything serious, plus at least an occasional inexactitude with facts. One of the simplest facts he ignores is the US Air Force funding of "flying saucer" research in the 1950's; think of it, a 199-page book that totally ignores the only known research done on the feasibility of building and flying a genuine flying saucer.
Let's face it. New Mexico is one of the poorest states (I lived there off and on since 1967, as recently as 1996), with some of the lowest education standards in the nation. Albuquerque, where Smith is based, has one of the nation's highest crime rates -- the city has declined precipitously since the 1960's. You don't see states at the top of the economic and social scale claiming to see "flying saucers" that are driven by kind-hearted ambassadors who will rescue us earthlings from our folly. Like the `cargo cults' in the South Pacific after World War II, such miraculous interventions are the product of a superstitious culture without much hope for improvement.
Roswell is in "Little Texas," not quite in the oil-patch but close enough to be infected. Except for the political boundary, it's more Texas in attitude than New Mexico. Smith misses this primary element of the Roswell area, and in general ignores the mystical "New Age" atmosphere of New Mexico. It's his major fault -- the book doesn't have a specific focus. It wanders from topic to topic like a bored TV viewer with 500 channels to watch, never stopping long enough to understand anything.
It's a shame. Smith tackled one of the most interesting situations in New Mexico, and turned it into utter boredom. Roswell, the `little gray men," flying saucers and the nature of government coverups deserve much better.

Customer Reviews:
Not recommended.......2007-08-11
All words are written in large, childlike print, to give an impression that this book is easy to read and thus also easy to execute. But the execution instructions are not very well described. Some steps have missing photos. The book is also way too short for the kind of book it is supposed to be: visual introduction to flash for beginners. It also has no troubleshooting nor any FAQ. This edition is identical to the newer one for Flash MX 2004(ISBN: 0-321-32125-1).I do not recommend starting learning flash from this book, it is for more advanced learners.
Would have been great but ..........2007-06-03
It seems like the other people who gave this book a low rating did so because it lacked detailed info as to why some of the steps were done. Well guys, maybe you should have read the front and back cover of the book before you bought it. This book was designed to walk you step by step through the process of creating a website in Flash 8. That's what it does... sort of. The problem is (and this is the only reason I'm not rating it 5 stars) that it is RIDDLED with errors. Some of the steps just don't work and you really have to spend a lot of time figuring out where the author has screwed up.
That said, it's still a nice little primer and worth the nominal cost for beginners.
Informative, but arduous.......2007-05-17
This is a good primer or refresher for Flash 8.
This book serves two purposes: (1) Acquaints the reader with fundamental Flash principles and (2) demonstrates what you can do with Flash.
The author could have made the book a lot better by writing a paragraph at the outset of each mini-lesson giving an overview of the point of the lesson and the steps.
Retention with this book is difficult because it drones from one lesson to the next in linear fashion. If the book were broken down with reference points and summary overviews, it would even be a great little reference book.
Another reviewer noted that some of the steps do not function. He is correct. It appears that there are a few instances where the author is either unclear about the steps or loses track of whether the reader is to work within a symbol or the main stage. I just hacked my way through it.
Also, Flash is such a dynamic program that the learning curve is lengthy. To learn Flash, you MUST dedicate time and effort. It gets easier once you make up your mind to make the effort.
The Flash Book We Have Been Waiting For.......2007-05-02
I am very pleased by this book, because it is the only one that I have ever found that I can use to teach Flash to someone else. The books doesn't get bogged down in the technical details of the program, it just shows you how to put Flash to work for you or your client.
The book is VERY well illustrated, and the website you make is nice enough to show to other people. This compares to other Flash books that teach you all about how and why you do something in designing a website, but never demonstrate how to put it together into a worthwhile product. So you end up with a "properly" designed website that either doesn't work right or is too ugly to show to anyone else.
This book changes that. Using it, I can sit down and walk someone through the creation of a pretty AND functional website. If they want to know why something is done a certain way, I would refer them to another book, but most people really don't seem to care once they have the project completed...
Good... if you just want to follow instructions.......2007-02-11
I was looking to design my first Flash-based website. This book may have helped me do it... but I learned nothing in the process. It did not answer any of my "whys" or "hows" - just merely gave me step by step instruction. Furthermore, several of the steps, when followed exactly (trust me...sometimes I'd redo them 3 and 4 times to make sure) would not produce the results the book said they would. If you're looking for a more comprehensive, teach-a-man-to-fish type of book, this is not what you're looking for.

Very good update on reknown textbook by Burns but..........2006-09-07
They have been doing very good job of updating ever since Burns didn't involve hinself directly in recent editions. Adding, updating the content yet maintaining the unique tone of Burns writing.
But with 14th edition, they changed the layout to two-column page layout. And I absolutley hate two-column page in any textbook or any book for that matter.
great book- worthy tome of knowledge.......2001-01-16
This book, while I realise its a text book, has given me great insight into the latter portion of western culture. This book provides more verifiable references then any other book of this type I've read. Quality color pictures and easily followed footnotes, provides a respectable index and is very easily understood and appreciated.

One of the foremost workers in the area of premodern science presents the standard nontechnical coverage of Egyptian and Babylonian mathematics and astronomy and their transmission into the Hellenistic world, including the especially interesting, surprising sophistication of Babylonian mathematics. 52 figures.
Customer Reviews:
Quick guide to pre-Greek mathematics and astronomy.......2006-02-11
The Babylonians were good guys. They had a sophisticated, table-based system of arithmetic, they could solve quadratic equations, etc. For all this we respect them, but for Plimpton 322 we love them--surely only true connoisseurs of numbers would produce a table of Pythagorean triples. The Egyptians on the other hand disappoint us. Their arithmetic "is probably best described as a retarding force" and their astronomy "remained through all its history on an exceedingly crude level" (p. 80). To be fair, their simple-mindedness did lead them to one great creation, namely "the only intelligent calendar which ever existed in human history", to be contrasted with e.g. "the chaotic Greek calendars, depending not only on the moon but also on local politics for its intercalations" (p. 81). Neugebauer's favourite topic is Babylonian astronomy. "The very backbone of Babylonian mathematical astronomy" (p. 102) is period relations, like 235 lunar months = 19 solar years. From here they build up a quite sophisticated, purely arithmetical system "excellently adapted to practical computation and to predicting new moons, eclipses, etc." (p. 114). "At no point of this theory are the traces of a specific geometrical model visible" (p. 110), so the Babylonian theory is completely different from the Ptolemaic theory. "Nevertheless, Babylonian influence is visible in two different ways in Greek astronomy: first, in contributing the basic empirical material ... second, in a direct continuation of arithmetical methods which were used simultaneously with and independently of the geometrical methods" (p. 156); apparently even the Greeks didn't want to pull out their trig tables for every little thing. Throughout the book there are also notes on various aspects of historical scholarship, including delightfully subjective remarks like "The much publicized 'progress' in the study of the history of science is difficult to reconcile with the shocking neglect of a great wealth of source material ... What we really need is not bibliographies and summaries, but competent publications of Islamic, Greek, and Latin treatises" (p. 55).
exact.......2003-03-26
An `old fashioned' text where the notes are as important as the body. The `Method' is the `As it really was' school. The author was a German mathematician who was drawn to Mesopotamian mathematics and astronomy early in the 20th century. Where used Greek or Latin is translated. The more modern European languages of French and especially German are extensively referred to in the notes but NOT in the body.
The book is much more `Eurocentric' than is `politically correct' these days. By example the `zero symbol' is attributed to Greece, thence to Egypt then to the Orient. Others disagree. This author presents data, lists and writings from the original sources ... he has received `lifetime awards' form mathematical societies but the popular press has called other authors on zero, "ball buster's"
This book is a very deep investigation of the topic of the title. While not a `page turner' for most if one relishes tidbits of fascinating information on numbers, antique maths, astronomical methods and spends the time to read the notes as well as the text when they finish this book they will have a good grip of the breadth of Mesopotamian knowledge of these subjects.
examines specific points rather than myths or stories.......1999-09-02
Readers purpose for examining the material was a search for more information into Egyptian use of Fibonacci sequences, specifically whether they used 1st. or 2nd. order, since it is known that the Italian was not the first. Readers questions in this regard were answered although not directly.Author of book makes case why astronomy did not evolve from astrology. Although author is not math intensive, author has incredible insight into the human subconsciousness role and direction into math as used by these early peoples. Reader was able to re-work, from the Astronomy section of MathCad, the base 60 calculator used by the Babylonians, (one was also constructed for the Eygptians in their base but is not nearly as interesting) and reflects how clearly the author had submitted the interpretations for the reader to follow. This book is gem.
An excellent overview of learning in Babylon and Egypt........1998-12-29
This book explains the level of learning and advance of knowledge that was aquired by the ancient cultures in Bablyon, Sumer, and Egypt.
It gives a good overview of the mathematics, and astronomy that was aquired in these cultures, and the progression of this to the more modern Greek and Roman cultures.
