True Character Study - Awesome character.......2000-06-06
If nothing else can be said for Warren Lehrer you can say that he is excellent at capturing people. I love this book. I've read all the portrait series books (I had to for class) and Claude was my second favorite. Brother Blue was my first. Claude is a captivating guy. I can see why women love him. If you're looking for a book that truly reveals and captures an honestly interesting character, buy this book. Heck, it's worth it just to read Claude's advice for having great relationships.

Book Description
Football is more than just a sport, it is a way of life. From the grittiness of practice and strategy sessions to the thrill of game days and the power of cheering crowds, football is the glue that holds a professional player's life together. But what happens when you have to face life after football? What happens when the cheering stops? The adjustement to life without football can be traumatic. Some players are prepared and make a seamless transition. Others struggle to make sense of a life that no longer seems to have meaning.
In When the Clock Runs Out, twenty talented NFL players share their private, inspiring stories of football, retirement, and adjustment. Pat Summerall candidly discusses his battle with alcoholism and his triumphant victory over addiction. Dan Reeves takes us on a harrowing journey through heart surgery and an improbable Super Bowl appearance. Thomas "Hollywood' Henderson describes his descent into drug addiction and his soul-cleansing climb to sobriety. These men and other NFL greats are proof of the hold that football can have over a player. They have given themselves heart and soul to the sport, and their lives have been changes because of it. As these stories make clear, football continues to influence them, long after they have removed their helmets and left the playing field for the last time.

Charlie Chaplin at Keystone and Essanay: Dawn of the Tramp
ASIN: 0810837412 |
Book Description
Providing more than just another musical profile, James details everything from his first encounter with Chaplin to his frequent visits to Switzerland when he lived at Chaplin's Manoir de Ban in Vevey.
Book Description
In this innovative study, Daniel A. Cohen explores a major cultural shift embodied in hundreds of early New England crime publications. Tracing the declining authority of Puritan ministers, he shows how the arbiters of an increasingly pluralistic literary marketplace gradually supplanted pious execution sermons with last-speech broadsides, gallows verses, criminal autobiographies, trial reports, newspaper stories, and romantic docudramas. "Pillars of Salt, Monuments of Grace" probes the forgotten origins of our modern mass media's preoccupation with crime and punishment.

Good, but not good enogh.......2000-12-19
Well, I must say that this book is mixed blessing. On the one hand there are excellent piece about New Orleans, description of smuggling routes, underwater cities and rules section (very helpful). On the other hand there is section about Vladivostok, which I, as Russian, found disappointing.
One word: MAPS.......1998-10-23
This book has a wealth of material smuggling routes, and long overdue info on border crossings. It also incorporates a much overlooked element in the shadowrun setting: regional maps. The mainland of North America is blocked out with not only international borders, but also the major cities are well marked. The New Orleans info is detailed enough to stage well thought-out runs there. Vladistock is detailed smoothly as well. This book makes an excellent companion to "The Underworld Sourcebook."
CyberPirates and Underwater Yakuza Bases, Oh My!.......1998-10-14
Concise, with an insight to New Orleans. This book links Seattle with the world, providing trade routes and creative ideas to run players into all kinds of trouble. As a GM, I love it!
This would have made a great novel!!!!!!.......1998-07-16
This book contained so much background information on places that it did not really help me much as a DM. It is great for a history lesson, but would have been more interesting if written as two seperate novels. It mainly gives background info on New Orleans and surrounding areas, as well as a port in good old Russia. Also don't let the picture above fool you. This is not the picture that I had on the book I received. It was a pitcure of a Vooduan buying body organs. The only helpful thing in the book for me was information on Talisleggin and organleggin. This is the aquisition and sell of talismen materials as well as, organs and body parts.

A needle in a haystack..........2006-10-06
I liked Cartsen Wartmann's book better than this one. This book has everything, and it is free online, but there is so much in it, it is a bit overwhelming for the newbie who just wants to learn the basis one step at a time. I ended up selling my copy of this book and buying the Blender Book by Carsten and I am happier with the older book.
Review of "The official Blender 2.3 Guide".......2006-09-05
It's nice having a comprehensive source for Blender and I do find the information useful.
My main criticism is on the screen captures. They are all set in grey scale on a dark grey background making distinguishing different elements difficult. Most troubling, especially for a 40-something like myself, are the tiny screen captures of the palettes. It is almost impossible to make out any detail in these images without the use of a magnifying lens.
I think this issue is a publication one. The publishers probably pushed for these tiny images because larger ones would have made the 768 page book a much bigger one with a larger cost; probably a major concern for them.
I've found the online image of the book much more legible but also much less convenient.
So we have a convenient resource (the book) that is hard to use because of legibility issues in the images and an inconvenient resource (the online image) that is much easier to read. Sadly, not the best of both worlds.
I still bought it........2006-06-13
Yes, it has grammar issues. But if you can understand the intent, then you can learn & get your work done.
Yes, its available in electronic format. But Blender loves to run full screen & I hated toggling between it other on-line tutorials.
Bottom-line, I still bought the book and am not dissappointed in the investment.
Excellent resource, but would have benefited by better editing.......2006-05-29
The information contained in the book is extremely useful for a Blender novice. It's laid out in a logical fashion, the text is supported by helpful examples, and unlike many online resources, all of the screenshots and examples pertain to one single version of Blender (with the exception of the final chapter, which details enhancements made to the application after the main text of the book had been written).
My only complaint about the book is that it is occasionally difficult to read; some sections were written by authors for whom English was not a primary language, and syntax idiomatic of other languages sometimes obscured the intent of certain passages. The book would have benefited greatly by the employment of a human proofreader, as well as an editor willing to revise the occasionally unprofessional or unclear language.
It's better online, and it's free!.......2006-05-26
Being a freely available program under the GNU GPL license, I believe in supporting this magnificent program by purchasing the guides - however...
When working from the book, there have been numerous menu changes between the version the book is written for (2.3) and the current version. This leaves you searching around for stuff and wasting a lot of time. I also ran into a problem with being unable to select a group of points as described in the book. I joined a blender forum, posted my question, and had an answer within 10 minutes. Make use of forums - their response time is like calling 911! When I decided to see what the version of the same tutorial that I had difficulty with was like in the online version, wouldn't you know, it gave a complete warning, with illustrations, about the problem I had encountered and how to deal with it! It also reflected the procedural steps for the latest version (menu item location changes, etc.).
If you are thinking that you will get a little something extra by buying the book, DON'T. The entire contents of the book are available online at blender.org, and are updated continuously. If you do buy this book to help support the cause, do as another reader suggested and install the older version of the program from the CD accompanying the book.
I would recommend finding other ways to financially support the Blender organization and skip purchasing the book. The reason I rate it 3 stars is because it was a sincere, effective effort for the version accompanying the book. I understand that the author's primary language is not english, and he did a much better job than I would do trying to write a book in italian. However, it seems that nobody in the publishing process with an average American or British grasp of the language bothered to edit the book before print. How can an organization go to the trouble of printing a book that is very well laid out and attractive and not actually edit the text to remove the awkward phrasing of a foreign author?
Bottom line: Support the cause, skip the book. It's better online.

Excellent Overview.......2004-12-15
Strayer's book is more than proposing one particular thesis as to why the USSR is no longer in existance. His book is more about using the events that happened between 1985 and 1991 (while keeping in mind the context of 1917-1985) to look at how a historian does his/her work. Rather than proposing one thesis and saying this is the reason for the collapse, Strayer examines a multitude of theses and discusses the pros and cons of each of them from a historians perspective.
I would recommend this book for two reasons, one if you want to know what events influenced the collapse of the USSR, this book does a good job (well documented too) of providing an overview of those events. From the rise of Gorbachev to the failed coup attempt. The second reason I would recommend this book is that from the perspective of a history teacher, Strayer gives an excellent opportunity to look at how historians analyze events and try to develop a thesis to fit those events. This book would serve as an excellent way to look at the historian's trade.
Overall, Strayer has given people several theses and the information to back those theses so that they can make up their own minds as to why the USSR is no longer around.
One of the most important events of the late 20th century.......2001-07-30
Robert Strayer does a wonderful job of communicating the changes in the Soviet Union, and the Communist Bloc, and foreshadwoing the eventual downfall of the role of communism. Strayer sets up the thesis of the book with a fairly in depth history of the Soviet Union following WWII, broken down by Presidents of the USSR. It is interesting to follow the major changes which occurred mainly at the powerful hands of the Soviet leaders during the Cold War. It is also very interesting to see such a silent, yet inevitably deadly, political pattern emerging -- hindsight is 20/20. This book is a great look at one of the most massive political changes in the 20th century.
Why Did the Soviet Union Collapse?.......2000-05-22
How did the Communists keep everyone under their thumb for 70 years? Actually, the trick was to let a tier in society have more absolute power than all the tsars put together & let them get away with murder, repression & deportation by the political millions. The demise of the USSR illustrates a large historical pattern - the process by which all human societies change, sometimes slow & unobtrusive, sometimes with the speed & impact of revolution. Good questions & some curious answers. Bit of a slog! Well worth the read, however! ....................

Book Description
The F/A-18 Hornet in its various guises was the 'universal soldier' of OIF, with around 250 seeing combat. Flown by various squadrons and groups, the Hornet attacked a range of targets including tanks of the various Iraqi Republican Guard units and government buildings housing elements of the Baath party regime. Apart from its ability to drop precision munitions such as laser-guided bombs, the Hornet was also capable of launching anti-radar missiles and acting as an aerial tanker and reconnaissance platform for other strike types. This book explores the Hornet's versatility which has enhanced its reputation as one of the world's leading strike-fighter aircraft.

Hornets over Iraq - The Saga Continues!.......2006-10-14
Tony Holmes scores another direct hit with this account of Navy Hornet drivers in combat over northern Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The Hornet's air war over northern Iraq was totally different in nature than that waged by F/A-18 units committed in the south. These Hornet units supported Special Operations Forces and Kurdish units tasked with pinning down Iraq divisions heading south to aid their comrades. Close air support was the name of the game for the Hornet units deploying from carriers Harry Truman and Theodore Roosevelt.
As with part one of this set, Holmes' text benefits from the unparalled access he had to Hornet pilots who flew over Iraq. The book is chock full of combat stories that put you right in the cockpit.
The text is complemented by dozens of photos, most in color, and five pages of F/A-18 side-views by Chris Davey.
If you enjoy fast movers in action, you'll want to get this book - and the others in the series.

Excellent Overview.......2007-01-12
This text is an excellent addition to "Manipulating The Mouse Embryo". It has a step-by-step approach to breeding and characterizing genetically altered mouse lines. I recommend it for any investigator and especially for those working directly with such mice.
