"Confessions of a Corporate Centurion" is great fun and a delight to read. The author tells of his unusual and fascinating exploits and escapades in an interesting and fast-moving style. Each chapter is a separate tale of amusing and interesting experiences in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
In addition to being very enjoyable reading, it is possible to learn a great deal about the customs, cultures, and business practices in many foreign lands. I highly recommend this book.

School is about preparing for the professional life. Case studies are suposed to put us in situations we will experience later at work. Sometimes, when playing out in the world field, we notice that the actual succes factors are not only those we learned at school. Gordon's extensive experience abroad proves that a successful carreer requires more than academic knowledge. And I am sure that many times we don't need to go outside the US to experience those stories. I am waiting for further books from Gordon, he surely has many real-world stories to tell us, and much more lessons to teach us. This book is entertaining, hopefully the next one will be a little more analytical.

Having lived in Europe and traveled the world as a member of the International divisions of several major US companies, I truly appreciate the down-to-earth, straight forward, and interesting approach that Mr. Riess has utilized in writing this fascinating book.

His experiences are real world, and in fact the real life that all of us involved in International operations have experienced during our travels around the world.

He has a great ability to make the reader feel that he/she is on the actual site and totally involved in the situation at hand. I highly recommend reading "Confession of a Corporate Centurion" to those of us who have been there, but even more so to those who have not.

It will give all who read it a true appreciation of the "challenges" involved in doing business overseas, and better yet, an understanding of the different cultures and values that exist around our world, and the need to adapt to them in order to get the job done, or even make your vacation trip more enjoyable.

Again, an excellent book that is difficult to put down!

This is an excellent guide to the web. Just the sort of book we've all been waiting for! Easy to understand and highly informative. It tells you in straightforward terms how the world wide web developed from the early Internet days, how it works and you can use it in many different ways. For example, it points you towards very useful web sites on health, education and business.

I passed my copy onto my young nephew. He was fascinated by it and has now begun to use the web himself to help him with his studies and find out lots of info about his favourite sports!

This is a great book for the serious player. I would reccomend it for the player who has been playing the saxophone for minimum 2-3 years. It includes some great songs such as Minas Tirith and Into the West! Overall, its an excellent book!

According to the review by user "Pirc_defense_expert" this is a book you should not bother to buy. Instead he recommends Rowson's book.

I agree with "Pirc_defense_expert" that Davies' book could have been a lot more systematic. Still I think Davies' book is ok because he presents ideas in the Grunfeld that you won't find in the other books.

E.g. in the Exchange variation 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6 3 Nc3 d5 4 cxd5 Nxd5 5 e4 Nxc3 6 bxc3 Bg7 7 Bc4 c5 8 Ne2 0-0 9 0-0 Nc6 10 Be3, Davies has a very interesting coverage of 10... Qc7. In the topical variation 11 Rc1 Rd8 12 Bf4 he mentions 12... Be5, and this is indeed a very interesting try.
Also, Davies covers 10... e6 which might also be an idea for the future although in the few outings so far I think it has not done to well.

lets summarize the technique:

-get all the grunfeld books
-review the main lines and what kasparov and kramnik are playing
-make few conclusive or thoughtful statements
-when you do make a statement, give very vague varaiations so people are left wondering, did he really think this was okay or did he miss this move?

specific variations: 7.bc4 in the exchange variation after 7...c5 8.ne2 nc6 9.be3 0-0 davies forgets 10.Rc1 and only lists 10.0-0 for white, not even mentioning the h4 idea.

I could list probably five more without thinking, but its not worth the time.

It may be the newest book, but dont bother, get rowsons book, he at least thinks before he writes.

A book for strong and experieced players.......2004-01-22

I like very much opening books by Everyman, because they give an idea of the middlegames arising in a particular opening. On the other hand, these books have too little pages and sometimes don't succeed in covering all the necessary lines, especially if they want to cover a whole opening. This is particularly true with this book, that simply doesn't give enough information about some variations that are important at club level. For example, only 14 pages are devoted to the 7.Bc4 variation and 13 to the Bf4 systems, which are, according to my personal experience, the main lines in tournaments below rating 1900.
Much of the space is given to the Russian System (quite the same that is devoted to ALL the lines of the Exchange Var.!), with many variations suggested to the Black side (that makes me think that this book is written mainly for White, as it gives black alternatives). In conclusion I think it is a little bit unbalanced.

About the contents there's nothing to say: the material is of high quality and the author is very good (I strongly reccommend his other book The Alekhine Defence). However, this book can't be recommanded for players who want to play the Grunfeld Defence as Black for the first time: they should look for other good books (the best choice is Understanding the Grunfeld by Rowson, and the classic book is the one by Adorian). Players above 1900 and/or players that have been playing the GD for a long time ,instead, can get very useful information (especially for the Russian System), as the comments are very well written, the games are relevant, and last but not least because experienced players know exacltly what they have to look for and don't get confused by the author's strange choice of the chapters.

A good book to begin your exporation toward Master play in the Grunfeld. This book should be supported by another book on the Grunfeld that covers your favorite Grunfeld Varations in greater detail once you begin playing it.

Another good book from Aagaard.......2005-06-24

I detest closed positions and when I first started playing chess I honestly believed there was no other option to facing 1.d4 other than the Queen's Gambit. I purchased and began to study Starting Out the Queen's Gambit but I still did not like the games and frequently lost. My record against 1.d4 was horrible. Now I have found a system that I enjoy. The positions which result from the Grünfeld tend to be semi-open and the ideas employed by both sides are rich and can be complex. That is the kind of chess I enjoy playing.

Aagaard has done a great job in introducing players to this opening and he has not pulled any punches. Some of the ideas and lines are complicated but he apparently struggled to make the book as up to date as possible. He even included a few games that were played weeks before his manuscript was sent to be edited.

The format is typical of the Starting Out series by Everyman Chess so if you enjoy any other books in the series you will certainly enjoy this book. Throw in Aagaard's odd sense of humor and you have a great introductory text. As for the review by KR from Texas, Aaagaard certainly checked his analysis with Fritz 8 as he makes several comments concerning this in the book. I am much more willing to trust the analysis of an IM backed by Fritz than I am to trust the average chess player but any book of this sort will have its errors and the whole point of *studying* a book like this is to question and understand the analysis and lines given - not to simply swallow what has been written with no thought that it might be incorrect or inaccurate.

God Help Us from the Twisted Chess Opinions of Bad Players.......2005-06-02

The previous review is nonsense! The Grünfeld is a very reputable opening, regularly essayed by grandmasters at the very top level (whereas the Modern Benoni, incidentally, is at such levels viewed with some suspicion, especially if Black plays . . .c5 before White has played Nf3). To paraphrase Jonathan Speelman, you should not play the Grünfeld if you are afraid of a passed d-pawn.

Starting Out? Yeahhh Right............2005-05-26

With all do respect to the author, this book is not well written. I got this book to actually learn the Grunfeld. Well It turns out I waisted my money. When I explored the Grunfeld a little more, i found out that it is a worthless opening. I now play the Modern Benoni. The Modern Benoni is excellent for agressive players and if you want to learn the opening I recommend Starting Out: The Modern Benoni. Ive had great success with this opening. Now back to the Grunfeld. The Grunfeld is bad because it lets white get a strong central advantage for no reason at all. Ive also found a few errors in this book. The variations are not well explained so your pretty much on your own the figure them out. So, Please save your money.

This book really takes texturing to a new level. You'll never walk around looking at the things the same way you did.

It describes intensely how to dissect and evaluate a surface, with interesting practical methods to re-create it.

Must read for people who seriously wants to learn about texturing.

Useful Book, Mostly an Art Book not a CG Book.......2006-11-06

This is a useful book, written by an experienced artist. Most of the book was really about art itself, how to see and notice details in real life the way an artist would. Only the last chapter really got into specifics about painting textures in Photoshop or specific types of maps.

If you want a book where most of it tells you how to think like an artist, then this is for you. If you wanted a book that went into more detail about how to unwrap UVs on a model or specific texture painting techniques, you'd be dissapointed.

I've had this book on my shelf for some years and refer to it frequently.

It describes actual ships and boats and mentions literary vessels including 'The African Queen', 'Red October' and (my personal favourite) 'The Ship of Fools'.

Most importantly, from an historical perspective, it provides a series of chronologies and an extensive bibliography. I am also grateful for the maps and the glossary.

Recommended to those who need a single volume reference for specific ships and a starting point for more general matters maritime.

Ever asked the question, "What was that ship? When did it sail? Why do we know of it? If you buy this book, your questions will be answered. From the Aaron Manby to the Zuytdorp, this book has them all. Even a list of "literary ships" such as the Africa Queen and the Caine.

"Ships of the World" describes each ship in detail including it's dimensions, builder, hull, origin, and ultimate disposition.

A "must" for any naval historian.

This was a gift from my grandmother. There have been several books over the years that have showed the history of the Jamaican Jews. This is the first one that I have read beyond my family history. I couldn't put it down. It talks about how the Spanish Jews first came to settle in Jamaica. It is very well written and easy to follow. One of the best gifts I've ever received!

Two very good friends of mine bought me this book last November and I can't get tired of it at all!

The book is systematically grouped into categories such as Desert landscapes, ancient landscapes etc which necessarily makes it an easy read for a light reader or those who love pictures.

Most of the pictures depict natural features in the U.S.A. and some from Canada and islands in the Indian Ocean. Even though many, such as the Delicate Arch, are very well-photographed, the lively colors seem to want you to pay attention to the pictures again. For example, Delicate Arch was taken with a backdrop of a brewing thunderstorm. Due to the presence of other comparable features behind or near the main focus, one will be kept intrigued, truly appreciating the sheer size of each of the features and marveling at the wonderful hand of God.

The captions are informative, and I would say, rather detailed - so much so they can pass for simple Geographic text. Some even add a sense of humor, describing huge corestones on the Bowling Balls Beach to have "roll[ed] over to join its companion".

My only complaint is that there are too few photos. There should be more on Grand Canyon, and other beautiful features not covered such as Big Horn Canyon, Gates of the Mountains, Yosemite Falls, Crater Lake, Shoshone in Wyoming and Niagara Falls, whose histories can be equally alluring.

The Earth has many lessons to teach us. These lessons are written on the ground at your feet, on the mountains across the river from my house, in the rocks of a riverbed, in the trees all around us. Once you learn to read them, you'll see them everywhere.

This inspired collaboration between Photographer William Neill and the Staff of San Francisco's acclaimed science museum, the Exploratorium, Traces of Time, beautifully illustrates the effects of time on our natural surroundings.

The Exploratorium was the one place in the Bay Area where I could take my chickadees for an entire day & know we would all be learning things that were both strange & curious about everyday objects & events. It is the only hands-on museum where you never hear a discouraging word & are invited to play. There are now over 650 exhibits which people can investigate with impunity.

This is a gloriously illustrated, thoughtfully written introduction to how the passing of time can be seen in the moment - rushing rivers captured in the camera's lens & over the eons - geology explained.

Newspapers seem to be telling us that every cornfield is threatened by a Dairy Queen. This media barrage about the crisis of our "shrinking" farmland can be traced to the 1979 publication of Where Have All the Farmlands Gone? by the National Agricultural Lands Study. The NALS report, to which eleven federal agencies contributed, argued that land-use planning and control must be employed to protect valuable farmland from"urban sprawl."

This volume, a collection of essays by a distinguished group of economists including Theodore W. Schulz, Julian L. Simon, and Pierre Crosson, takes issue with the belief that croplands need governmental protection. In opposition the collection as a whole supports two theses: 1) shrinking farm acreage is not a serious problem, and 2 )individual choices by landowners in a market setting result in better-organized land use than would governmental land-use planning and regulation.
