This is a brilliant testimony from a woman who has in bondage to this kind of success. The fact that Athena Dean speaks from her own experience doesn't mean it's true for everybody else...however, there is a great deal of truth in here for everyone to learn from.

As someone who was in the grand-daddy of them all in MLM, as far as the motivational organizations which propel it, much of what Athena says is right on the money (pardon the pun).

The fact that no one wants to hear the "negative," and you have to "associate" with the right kind of people, read the "right kind" of books, and listen to the right tapes and go to all the seminars. I mean, one can spend thousands of dollars on this kind of thing and get nothing out of it.

Then there is the "selling of the dream" which is right on target as well. I used to sell the dream, and everything which she talks about still occurs. But, there is one thing which none of the "upline" ever did, and that was to "counsel" their downline to seek God's guidance before every decision, and to go to prayer when any major decision needed to be made. No, they said "see it to believe it," which ran counter to what the Bible says about "In all things seek God, and He shall guide your paths." I even remember one man having a Bible in his motel room and right next to it a book by Napoleon Hill. Talk about contradictions.

A great book, and meant as a personal testimony, although I'd advise others to read it carefully and prayerfully. I wish I'd read this book back in the early 90's. It would have saved me thousands of dollars. God calls us to be faithful, not successful.

Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars A one-sided and incomplete look at success........1998-05-25

I fully understand Mrs. Dean's struggles and position. She truly became consumed with success. That as she points out is wrong and un-Christian. We are to be fully and totally given over to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. However in her zeal to warn us from the dangers of materialism and greed - both sins- she has mistakenly isolated on "tool" of both. MLM is no more the problem than an 8 - 5 job. I was also in her position once but my "MLM" was the military. With any business, career or hobby for that matter, we can become overly consumed as was she. I think the book's message would be better targeted at greed, materialism and lust for power and fame - not a particluar type of business. For the record I am not in any MLM - But I find it truly distatsteful to mark any type of business opportunity as "ungodly" simply because we may or may not have had a bad experience in it.

4 out of 5 stars Why Christians Shouldn't Get Involved in MLM Companies.......1997-03-28

Athena Dean has been to the top of the Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) ladder. She and her husband were making well over $20,000 a month. They thought they had success, but then God stepped in. He showed them how they had become consumed by the world's view of success and the pursuit of wealth. They had sold out everything--church, friends, family and their ministry to Vietnam Veterans in order to worship the almighty dollar. In this book, Athena not only shares her personal story (both highs and lows) but gives scripture references why as Christians we need to avoid falling into the Satan's trap of multi-level marketing. If you are a Christian and are involved in a MLM or are thinking about getting involved in one and want to hear an opinion from a Godly woman who has been there and back, then this book is a must read. "For what does it profit a man if he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul.&quot

Oh come on! How can anybody pan a book without at least opening the cover? Field of Valor is an excellent look at the service academy football programs during their glory days. It might not belong in the library of every football fan but it is a nicely produced book with a great deal of interesting information and it deserves a look, especially with bargain priced used copies out there!

While I have not yet read the book, I wish to point out that Glenn Davis never reached the rank of brigadier general. As a matter of fact, he hardly reached the rank of first lieutenant. He was too interested in Hollywood and such environs. He wasn't even a good pro player. Neither was Joe Bellino.

      Book Description

The presentation of art, animals, and sex in Las Vegas, and how the creation of spectacle blurs the line between art and business. Las Vegas, says William Fox, is a pay-as-you-play paradise that succeeds through its collective ability to fantasize our deepest desires, which in a consumer society mean vast wealth and the excesses of pleasure and consumption that go with it. In this context, Fox examines how Las Vegas's culture of spectacle has obscured the boundaries between high art and entertainment extravaganza, nature and fantasy, for-profit and nonprofit enterprises.

His purview ranges from casino art galleries--including Steve Wynn's private collection and a branch of the famed Guggenheim Museum, --to the dismally underfunded Las Vegas Art Museum; from spectacular casino animal collections like those of magicians Siegfried and Roy and Mandalay Bay's Shark Reef exhibit to the city's desultory efforts to create a viable public zoo; from the environmental and psychological impact of lavish water displays in the arid desert to the artistic ambiguities intrinsic to Las Vegas's floating world of showgirls, lapdancers, and ballet divas.

That Las Vegas represents one of the world's most opulent displays of private material wealth in all its forms, while at the same time providing miserly funding for local public amenities like museums and zoos, is no accident, Fox maintains. Nor is it unintentional that the city's most important collections of art and exotic fauna are presented in the context of casino entertainment, part of the feast of sensation and excitement that seduces millions of visitors each year. Instead, this phenomenon shows how our insatiable modern appetite for extravagance and spectacle has diminished the power of unembellished nature and the arts to teach and inspire us, and demonstrates the way our society privileges private benefit over public good. Given that Las Vegas has been shown over and over to be the harbinger of national cultural trends, Fox's commentary may offer prescient insight into the future of the arts in America, as well as new understanding of the role that public institutions like museums and zoos play in our lives.

2 out of 5 stars You won't pass the 1Z0-007 exam with just this book........2007-04-21

I just passed 1Z0-007 a few hours ago making 90% (47 of 52) first try. Trust me, If I ONLY studied this book, I would have failed. This book has so many mistakes that it will make you go crazy. It's completely outdated. It doesn't have the current exam objectives. The wording and content placement of this book is terrible. I should have bought the oracle 9i OCP: sql studyguide by Oracle Press.

Get the Self Test Software. It will save you a retake.

I'm studying Oracle's 10g PL/SQL book and Self Test for the next test.

I can't wait to be an OCA!

I bought this book and i am still preparing for the certification. So can't really say how useful it will be for the exam. But while reading it, i think it has a great style and really pertinent information.
I am confident this book will help me successfully complete the exam.

4 out of 5 stars This book is very helpful.......2006-07-22

I just passed the 1z0-007 exam yesterday. I dont have a lot of experience with oracle, but this book helped me learn all the important concepts for the exam and helped me pass it in my first attempt.

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to pass the exam. However, the usefulness of this book ends there. It is not very useful and the explanations are not detailed enough for learning more about the technology itself.

4 out of 5 stars Good book - but independent test software needed to pass exam.......2006-07-21

Good book, very thorough, equally useful for study-reading and reference.
My one complaint was the end-of-chapter tests and practice tests, which were much more detailed and more difficult then the exam itself. I wasted time trying to perfect my knowledge until I purchased an 'Exam-Prep' software kit and found I was getting 90%+ on tests, instead of the 40 and 50%+ with the Sybex tests.
When I took the exam - sure enough 90%+
For the next exam I'm buying the Sybex book and 'Exam-Prep' software kit together!

          Book Description

In Jorge Luis Borges's finely wrought, fantastic stories, so filigreed with strange allusions, critics have consistently found little to relate to the external world, to history--in short, to reality. Out of Context corrects this shortsighted view and reveals the very real basis of the Argentine master's purported "irreality." By providing the historical context for some of the writer's best-loved and least understood works, this study also gives us a new sense of Borges's place within the context of contemporary literature.
Through a detailed examination of seven stories, Daniel Balderston shows how Borges's historical and political references, so often misread as part of a literary game, actually open up a much more complex reality than the one made explicit to the reader. Working in tension with the fantastic aspects of Borges' work, these precise references to realities outside the text illuminate relations between literature and history as well as the author's particular understanding of both. In Borges's perspective as it is revealed here, history emerges as an "other" only partially recoverable in narrative form. From what can be recovered, Balderston is able to clarify Borges's position on historical episodes and trends such as colonialism, the Peronist movement, "Western culture," militarism, and the Spanish invasion of the Americas.
Informed by a wide reading of history, a sympathetic use of critical theory, and a deep understanding of Borges's work, this iconoclastic study provides a radical new approach to one of the most celebrated and—until now—hermetic authors of our time.

            Book Description

To Americans he was Wild Cat, to Mexicans, Gato del Monte. But to his own people he was Coacoochee, a warrior and diplomat who led the Seminole resistance to American injustice in their home territory of Florida and through the Spanish borderlands of North America. In the first in-depth study of this dramatic figure, Susan A. Miller, a historian and a Seminole, sorts out discrepancies between American history--where Coacoochee remains in the background--and Seminole tradition--where he stands as a great leader.

Relocated in 1841 to the Indian country in what is now Oklahoma, the Seminoles under Coacoochee resisted colonization. Coacoochee instead led his people to Mexico, along with a community of black fugitives from slavery and another of Kickapoos, where they secured land in exchange for military assistance. Coacoochee's Bones tells the dramatic story of that migration, a story of armed resistance and diplomatic intrigue that ranges across the Indian country, Texas, and Mexico. It also portrays the extraordinary leadership displayed by this man, in order to restore him to his rightful place in history.

A man born to an elite family, Coacoochee used the power of his status in creative ways, and Miller uses his career to explain his leadership in terms of Seminole knowledge and governmental structure, showing that Coacoochee's concept of leadership was linked as closely to spiritual as to political or military imperatives. Her account offers a more nuanced understanding of the Seminole cosmos--particularly the reality governing Coacoochee's awareness of his own tribe's circumstances--and of long-standing borderlands disputes. She draws on Seminole, American, and Mexican sources to help untangle the histories of various emigrant tribes to the borderlands. She also examines the status of Seminoles today in light of the suppression of Coacoochee's story, including modern Seminoles' attempts to recover their lost homeland at El Nacimiento.

By telling Coacoochee's story from a Seminole perspective, Miller presents a work of decolonization, reexamining Seminole history to affirm that people's centrality and sovereignty. Coacoochee's Bones restores a significant historical figure to his rightful place in history and is a work that cannot be ignored by anyone who wishes a fuller understanding of this continent's diverse and storied past.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting to the last page..........2004-06-13

Although the writing tends towards the dry and academic, I find this one of the more interesting books on physical anthropology out there. It details dozens of the most well known and important anthropological finds in history, from who killed King Tut, to the legal battle of Kennewick Man, to the brutal murders of the "bog bodies" of Western Europe during the Bronze Age, and beyond. It's extremely facinating, but with each description totalling a few pages at most, I found it almost too brief. I would have loved to been able to read an entire book on just about all the burial finds offered up in "Written in Bones", as the short synopsis of each site feels more like a teaser than a complete story. Definitely a good way to get your feet wet if you're interested in physical anthropology and don't know where to start, or as a sort-of Cliff's Notes of some of the more recognizable finds in anthropology.

5 out of 5 stars Great introductory book.......2003-10-20

As an introductory book to archeology and anthropology, this book is without peer. It's individual case studies are detailed enough to spark interest, but short enough not to bog down in details. There are lots of color photographs so the reader can see what the writer is trying to describe. The case studies cover many different parts of the world, including some that one doesn't readily connect with archeology, and many time periods, from 1.5 million years ago to a couple of hundred years ago.

From these case studies one can begin to understand how ancient bodies are yielding their secrets to forensic science. Each case study produces more revelations. For me one of the most amazing was "The Wife of the Marquis of Dai" who died in China some 160 years before the birth of Christ. Her body is almost perfectly preserved and it has been discovered that she suffered from about 10 diseases, including tuberculosis, but that she died from a heart attack due to overeating.

I found this book a delight. I've always been impressed by the way forensic anthropologists can sample, analyze and deduce human stories from these ancient bones. This book presents the results in a very readable fashion and should help to create wider interest and understanding of this fascinating topic.

4 out of 5 stars Broad-based regionally and by period.......2003-08-25

Written in Bones is a multi-authored volume of articles edited by Paul Bahn, who coauthored along with Colin Renfrew my favorite book on archaeology, Archaeology: Theories, Methods and Practice. I had therefore expected something a little more cutting edge in this department and so was a little disappointed. Other readers will probably not be. As with any book with several authors the quality of the writing varies from chapter to chapter according to the abilities of the various sources. In some instances the word choices and grammar suggested that a foreign language speaker or his translator had make an awkward word selection, in others it might have been an editing failure, but the overall style is very lucid and rapidly read. I took about an afternoon to read it.

Some of the material was already known to me from other sources; other information was new and fun to read. Because most of my study has been conducted in ancient history, in particular the Near East, Greece and Rome, I found the studies of modern remains and those in Chinese and Andean sites were of more interest.

Vilnius and the Ghosts of the Grande Armee was particularly arresting, describing as it does the tragic fate of the bulk of Napoleon's army during his ill-conceived Russian campaign. High-mountain Inca Sacrifices updated me on the discovery and examination of the freeze-dried remains of children sacrificed in the Andes Mountains. The find given the name Juanita was known to me, but much research has been done since her discovery almost a decade ago. Since I have recently taken an interest in post-conquest English history (inspired by a particularly good series of murder mysteries) I found the article Anne Mowbray and the Skeletons in the Tower, a discussion of the murders of the nephews of Richard III, enjoyable. It filled in a knowledge gap and extended my period of interest a little.

Most of the stories are simple, general descriptions of human remains and their relevance to the historical record of human kind. They should appeal to the casual reader with junior high school reading skills or above, and require no prior study in archaeology. They will not bog the reader down in professional jargon or differences and might even inspire the reader to do further reading on a particular period of interest.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating, But a Little Dry.......2003-06-30

"Written in Bones" explains what human remains can tell us about how people lived in the distant past. The book covers natural deaths, deliberate deaths (murders and massacres), burials, mummies and mummifications, as well as how ancient people lived and what they ate, all in 36 chapters. Each chapter is an article written by an expert on the subject, with editor Paul Bahn supplying the overall organization and continuity.

Because the chapters are written by different authors, they vary substantially in quality. Some are well-written and provide a context for the stories they tell; others are fairly dry and look as though they were based on academic articles with the footnotes removed. On the whole, however, the book is fascinating-- at times, it's even graphic and unsettling, especially when it deals with child sacrifice, murder, mayhem and (to the modern mind) rather bizarre burial practices.

If you are interested in the subjects covered by this book, here are a few other recommendations: Chamberlain & Pearson, "Earthly Remains: The History and Science of Preserved Bodies" (2002); David & Archbold, "Conversations with Mummies" (2000); Wilson, "Past Lives: Unlocking the Secrets of Our Ancestors" (2001); and Richards, "Meet the Ancestors." I found the last two of these books to be especially fascinating, because they devote a substantial amount of space to showing what the owners of the excavated skeletons would have looked like in life (something that "Written in Bones" does only in a few chapters).
