Book Description

An Explosive New Release book based on a true story of an African American businessman in Eastern North Carolina.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The "Plan Nine From Outer Space" of books!.......2003-04-11

I positively *loved* every moment of Homer Walker's Cracking the Egg-Man, but these other reviewers are in urgent need of medical attention if they think this is a serious expose on governmental abuse of power. GIVE ME A BREAK! This self-published effort is, without a doubt, the single WORST BOOK EVER WRITTEN!

In 1993, Walker is a self-made entrepreneur in Fayetteville North Carolina, when he is conftonted by a far-reaching conspiracy to force him out of business and into prison. The conspiracy is anchored by the USDA, and revolves around the allegation that Walker has been illegally redeeming food stamps for cash.

Walker, convinced that he can PROVE in open court that he has been redeeming food stamps for cash (so that poor persons in his community can pay their light bills, etc.) sets out on an eighteen month trek to document all the times he's illegally redeemed food stamps for cash. He presents the evidence in open court while acting as his own legal counsel, and is summarily thrown in prison.

Don't just buy this book for the sheer lunacy of the argument, buy it for the prose:

"Now, a 'Genuine Issue' is a issue which can be sustained by substantial evidence whenever there is a slightest doubt as to a material fact, so long as the fact in doubt is a material one which has legal probative force as to a controlling issue."

WHAZZUH??? Take it from me, you need to buy this book and read it. Come to think of it, so do the Cohen Brothers!

4 out of 5 stars Compelling read.......2002-01-01

A compelling read, in which I felt anger, frustration and dismay, but i was not suprised to see suppression, power and deceit as part of the judicial system that is supposed to be fair and equal to all?

A weaker person would have given up long before Homer, credit should be given for his persistence and bravery in exposing these people for what they really are. My only disappointment is that these people are not behind bars, serving a prison sentence for their deceit, neglect, lies and perjury.

Homer, Good Luck for the future. I am sure you will reap the rewards for your endeavours and beliefs, and I am sure your actions have already saved many people from receiving unjust decisions by that judicial system and its hierarchy.

5 out of 5 stars Cracking The Egg-man.......2001-06-22

I purchase the book in Concord North Carolina and I finally finished reading it and I think the book was perfectly written and the Author who is also the Egg-man, I feel was treated unjust by the Justice System by reading this book I hope and pray that alot of other people read this exciting book also. I support the Author in his next publishing of the next book out.

4 out of 5 stars Cracking The Egg-man.......2001-05-20

I enjoyed the book because it felt like I was actually there and once I got started on the book it was very hard for me to put it down. This is alot of what some other well respectable businessmen are also going through. The book showed how the eggman struggle thoughout the system but never gave up no matter how much pressure was against him, he never gave up not even when he was convicted. I see while serving his time he got to know the law and justice system very well. So that when it was time for his release he was prepared to fight fire with fire, and with determination. I applaud him for all that he did. Keep up the good fight;I think that he is a very strong man. I admire him for helping others.

      Book Description

Analyzing docudrama as a mode of argument, Steven N. Lipkin explores the ethical, historical, and ideological functions of docudrama to discover why these films based on true stories offer such appealing story lines. That appeal, Lipkin discovers, is rooted in docudrama’s representation of actual people and events by means of melodramatic narrative structures that play on the emotions of the viewer.

The dual nature of docudramas—blending narrative and documentary style— argues for a moral view of reality-based subject matter. The ethics, the ideology, the very presence of docudrama on television and the range of topics and problems that appear in contemporary feature film docudramas indicate how this form of presentation appeals to its audience. Docudrama offers a warranted, rational view of what the story material might suggest initially to be an irrational world. Through its moral agenda, docudrama ultimately allows the possibilities of understanding, optimism, and hope to emerge from “real stories.”

Real Emotional Logic traces the development of docudramas into contemporary movies of the week and feature films, including Schindler’s List, Amistad, JFK, The Killing Fields, Quiz Show, A League of Their Own, In the Name of the Father, Call Northside 777, 13 Rue Madeleine, Cheerleader Mom, Shine, Rosewood, A Civil Action, and October Sky.

Lipkin provides further insight into the genre by identifying and describing the commonalities connecting ostensibly different docudramas through their shared themes and narrative techniques. In doing so, he exposes the persuasive rhetorical strategies at the heart of docudramas and reveals the constructed emotional appeal inherent in films “based on a true story.”

        Book Description

The similar cuisines of the Near East, Middle East, and North Africa stem from ancient cultures and variable climates, ranging from Mediterranean to desert. The major monotheistic religions developed in the Middle East, and students and other readers will learn how religous strictures on food and drink continue to play an important role in eating habits there today for Muslims, Jews, and Christians. Most of the population in the regions is Arab, and therefore the emphasis in this volume is mainly on the Arab Muslim food cultures. The impact of colonialism, globalization, and modernization on the foodways is also discussed in the topical chapters. This thorough overview provides huge insight into the lives of everyday people in the regions through their food culture. One chapter describes the major foodstuffs and how they are used. Another discusses gender roles and cooking, the use of cookbooks, and details the typical kitchen and its contents, from appliances to utensils. A chapter on typical meals shows the daily rituals of the various peoples. The "Eating Out" chapter provides a fascinating look at the workings and decor of small, traditional restaurants, the popularity of picnics, and more. Next, food in the context of religious holidays and life-cycle celebrations is discussed. Finally, traditional folk and modern beliefs about diet and health round out the coverage.

5 out of 5 stars Great advice for software developers.......2007-06-29

If your company has a web site, there are many people waiting to attack it and break into it.

In How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services, authors Mike Andrews and James Whittaker detail the myriad Web software exploits that attackers will attempt to carry out. The tools and techniques that can be used to fight against them are also detailed.

The book also includes a companion CD that contains all of the source code referenced in the book in addition to a number of testing tools. The authors include software code from an insecure Web site, which helps the reader get a real-world feel for the topics involved.

The authors conclude with a look at the last 50 years of software defects, showing that developers are not learning from the mistakes.

The authors are of the opinion that software quality is no better today than it was decades ago. And in some cases, it is worse.

The book helps drive home the importance of having developers think about writing secure code and testing it for flaws. It is a recommended read for IT professionals.

2 out of 5 stars Short on content with too much padding.......2007-05-18

I was disappointed in this book. The actual content was pretty thin, and not very well written. Chapter 1 is a complete waste of time, and actually spends pages explaining what client/server means, what the Web is, and other things that are patently obvious to the supposed audience for this material. I found myself turning to the front to see if this book was written in 1997! You then get nine fairly short chapters with instructions on how to hack a website, more or less; followed by 50 pages of useless padding in the appendices including: an unrelated article co-authored by Whittaker for the IEEE, a detailed list of all the bugs present in their "sample application," and then descriptions of their recommended tools, all of which can easily be found on the Web without paying $22 for this book.

As another reviewer mentioned, there are many typos and other problems like incorrect illustrations, making the reader wonder if Addison-Wesley even employs a copy editor. Furthermore, I felt this book was inaccurately named and described. It's really more about rudimentary hacking and protecting your web application against hackers than web quality or web testing. A beginning web developer might do well to read this as a primer on how to create sites and applications with basic security, but as an experienced tester it was of limited use to me.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-04-13

I've been programming for over 10 years and thought that I had encountered it all. Uh ya, I was wrong. I'm amazed that a person can work with something for so long and yet still miss simple things like URL jumping. This is a great 32,000 foot view of web security (not a how to hack book) and covers what you should know if you are a web developer. Even if you alredy "know it all" this is a great read and excellent reference for creating check lists on projects and threats they may be succeptable to.

5 out of 5 stars Fast international delivery.......2007-03-15

5 out of 5 stars Very informative. If you develop web software it's a must-read.......2006-08-04

I recently finished reading How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services by Mike Andrews and James A. Whittaker. I, like many of you, develop web software for a living. I've always taken security seriously and occasionally sneered when I ran across examples of common mistakes. Having said that, this book was an eye opener for me.

The book covers common exploits such as bypassing input validation, SQL injection, and denial of service. There were also several types of attacks I hadn't really considered before. I won't list them here because someone would undoubtedly say, "I can't believe he didn't know about that one!" The authors cover 24 different types of attacks in all. The book also includes coverage of web privacy issues and security related to web services.

Finally, as icing on the cake, a CD is included that contains many tools that will find permanent spots in your arsenal. There are tools to do things like scan web servers for common exploits, mirror sites for local analysis, and check SSL cipher strengths. My favorites are the local proxies that will allow you to view and modify posts as they travel from the client and the server. I always knew I could do this, but didn't know how easy it is. The CD also contains the source code of an example site that includes many flaws for you to practice.

This book is written for software professionals to help them put the hackers out of business. So, it necessarily includes hacker techniques. If you develop or test web software, you should read this book before the hackers do. :-)

                        Book Description

Postmodernism has significantly affected the theory and practice of history. It has induced fears about the future of historical study, but has also offered liberation from certain modernist constraints. This original and thought-provoking study looks at the context of postmodernist thought in general cultural terms as well as in relation to history.
Postmodernism in History traces philosophical precursors of postmodernism and identifies the roots of current concerns. Beverley Southgate describes the core constituents of postmodernism and provides a lucid and profound analysis of the current state of the debate. His main concern is to counter `pomophobia' and to assert a positive future for historical study in a postmodern world. Postmodernism in History is a valuable guide to some of the most complex questions in historical theory for students and teachers alike.

Cesar was the second born in the chavez family that had 6 kids. After reading this incredible book (TWICE) I have found no errors. This book is true to the core. GOOD BOOK! The other reviewer was obviously a drunk monkey!

1 out of 5 stars This book is poorly researched and full of errors.......1999-07-12

This book is not recommended for those interested in accurate information on the subject. Whereas I counted countless errors, I think the most telling is that the authors did not know that Cesar Chavez was the eldest son in the Chavez family. At least three times they mention his brother Richard as being older. If biographers can not get this important fact correct, you can imagine how accurate the rest of the book is. I would say reading it is a waste of time.

                        Book Description

How dangerous is smoking? What are the risks of nuclear power or of climate change? What are the chances of dying on an airplane? More importantly, how do we use this information once we have it? The demand for risk analysts who are able to answer such questions has grown exponentially in recent years. Yet programs to train these analysts have not kept pace. In this book, Daniel Kammen and David Hassenzahl address that problem. They draw together, organize, and seek to unify previously disparate theories and methodologies connected with risk analysis for health, environmental, and technological problems. They also provide a rich variety of case studies and worked problems, meeting the growing need for an up-to-date book suitable for teaching and individual learning.

The specific problems addressed in the book include order-of-magnitude estimation, dose-response calculations, exposure assessment, extrapolations and forecasts based on experimental or natural data, modeling and the problems of complexity in models, fault-tree analysis, managing and estimating uncertainty, and social theories of risk and risk communication. The authors cover basic and intermediate statistics, as well as Monte Carlo methods, Bayesian analysis, and various techniques of uncertainty and forecast evaluation. The volume's unique approach will appeal to a wide range of people in environmental science and studies, health care, and engineering, as well as to policy makers confronted by the increasing number of decisions requiring risk and cost/benefit analysis. Should We Risk It? will become a standard text in courses involving risk and decision analysis and in courses of applied statistics with a focus on environmental and technological issues.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Text on Risk Assessment.......2000-08-19

Written in a straightforward and almost conversational style, this book provides an introductory text on the topic of risk assessment. The book describes complex concepts in simple language and is thus effective in presenting the subject matter, Moreover, the exercises within each chapter are clearly designed to reinforce understanding of the topics covered. Overall, an excellent book for a student of risk assessment.

3 out of 5 stars Good but more explanation needed........2000-03-22

This book provides a lot of good example problems in the field of environmental risk assessment. However, it seems to lack follow-up discussion of the case studies. It is intended, perhaps, that the reader would work through the problems and then perhaps discuss them as in a class situation. There are questions following the problems that might be considered adequate to lead the reader to the point the authors were trying to make. Nonetheless, it would help the cohesiveness if there were some discussion of the problems rather than just going from one to the next.

                                Description:
Forty soil samples collected from central Jordan were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry for Pb, Cd, Zn, Cr, and Hg. The samples were also investigated for mineralogy using X-ray, electron, and optical microscopes. Sequential extraction procedures were used to predict the percentages of the Pb, Zn, Cd, and Cr present in each of the soil geochemical phases. The clay mineral assemblage encountered in the analyzed samples is composed of kaolinite, smectite, illite, and illite/smectite mixed-layer. The nonclay minerals of the sand-sized fraction are composed mainly of quartz and calcite as major minerals with pyroxene, biotite, and feldspars as minor minerals. The enrichment factors of the measured heavy metals Pb, Cd, Zn, Cr, and Hg in the clay fraction ( <2@mm) of the collected samples are 3.1, 16.6, 1.5, 0.9, and 4.5, respectively. According to the index of geoaccumulation, the soils of the study area are considered to be moderately contaminated with respect to Cd, uncontaminated to moderately contaminated with respect to Pb, Hg, and Zn, and uncontaminated with respect to Cr. The measured metals correlated positively with the determined physicochemical factors such as pH, clay content, organic matter content, and carbonate content. The relatively high concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Hg in the soils of the study area are related to anthropogenic sources such as cement industry, fertilizers, and vehicle exhausts. It was found that Pb, Zn, and Cr are associated mainly with the residual phases and are relatively immobile. On the other hand Cd is enriched in the carbonate phase of the analyzed soil samples. It is possible to suggest the sequence of mobility for Pb, Zn, Cd, and Cr in the analyzed soil samples as the following: Cd@?Pb>Cr>Zn.

                                            Book Description

Billy Arjan Signh's extensive writings are an impressive and reliable record of the large-scale changes in the north Indian countryside, and a tale of one man's efforts to stem the tide of destruction. This volume gathers together some of his most significant wildlife writing, giving an
overview of a life spent in a uniquely single-minded championing of the cause of conservation.

Culled from several published and some unpublished writings, this collection deals with the problems afflicting efforts to create a national park in a developing country, and the implementation of conservation measures in general. Billy's writings on the tiger point to the need for constant
vigilance and effort to prevent this majestic animal from being brought to the brink of extinction. He also writes authoritatively about the swampdeer, and about his extraordinary experiments to rear big cats and teach them the ways of the wild so that they could return to their natural habitat.

With 15 color photographs and a biographical introduction by Geoffrey and Diane Raines Ward, this is a collector's edition for wildlife enthusiasts.
