    Book Description

This memoir tells the story of my brief marriage to a commercial fisherman. I quit my job as an attorney and joined him in his endeavors as a commercial albacore and salmon fisherman. The story involves the intricacies of commercial fishing on the Pacific Ocean and just how fragile a business it is. One mistake can sink the boat and that is precisely what happened to us a short six months after our marriage. We had no insurance and lost everything in a freak storm. That stroke of fate proved determinative of the rest of the relationship. Several newspaper articles covered the tragedy. The book mentions the numerous pelagic avian and mammalian species we viewed and photographed while on the ocean and there’s a naturalists pleasure in it. It is also a story of struggle and survival to make ends meet in a deeply difficult industry. The Captain of the Brandy Lee, our beloved boat, was a world-class storyteller, con artist, and wife beater. It is a tale of profound happiness and grief.

    Book Description

This hardcover book (256 pages) is the only book on the market that ranks (one through fifty) the best players in NBA history. It uses expert opinions (Hubie Brown, Bob Ryan, Bill Walton and dozens of others), statistical tables and argumentation to rank the greatest guards, forwards and centers in the history of the game. Photos of all 50 of the greatest players are included. PUBCOMMENT: Kenneth Shouler has written a book replete with arguments about basketball's all-time greats. It is not a marketing list of the game's most popular players (Shaquille O'Neal, etc.) but a selection of the game's best based on merit.

3 out of 5 stars Very pleasant read - despite east coast bias and too much emphasis on individual stats........2005-09-24

Similar to Bjarkman's Biographical History of Basketball.

It's an entertaining and informative read to those who are uninitiated to the history of professional basketball. Yet, it provides too much emphasis on individual stats when comparing players from different eras.

His T.O.P rating is bogus since you can not compare a player's overall effeciveness by combining points, rebounds, and assists averages over the total extent of one's career. That's why Bill Russell has a higher T.O.P. than Kareem since he only played 13 seasons and was only 4 or 5 seasons removed from his prime when he retired compared to Kareem who played 20 seasons and was 10 years removed from his prime when he retired.

And you can not compare the rebound and scoring statistics from the early '60s to the modern game ('80s to present day '05). During that time period, the game was alot more up-tempo, players took alot more shots at a low FG percentage which provided alot more opportunities for rebounds (it's impossible for a player to average 30 rebounds in a playoff series in today's league), team defenses and scouting against an opponent were way less sophisticated (therefore a player like Wilt Chamberlain can run amok one-on-one against a hopeless defender without worrying about much double-teaming and swarming full-court traps), and there was a quantum leap in terms of inclusion of talent starting in the mid to late 50's to mid 60's. Therefore players like Chamberlain, Russell, Baylor, and Robertson were playing against players remnant from an outdated era who had no hope to slowing down there extraordinary talents and physical skills.

If you placed Magic Johnson in the early '60s, he would average a triple double. If you placed Shaq in that time period, he would average in the neighborhood of 40 to 45 points a game (since he would never play 48 minutes a game like Wilt in order to average 50). If you placed Dennis Rodman in that time period, he would average in between 22 and 27 rebounds a game. If you placed Dikembe Mutombo and Hakeem Olajuwon in that time period, they would average around 9 to 10 blocks a game. Personal Stats from the stars in that era are bloated and should not be weighted more favorably due to their gaudier averages.

The other issue that irritated me was the obvious east coast bias toward the amount of attention that Larry Bird got over Magic Johnson in this book. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Bird fan but you can not justify to give a complete and detailed retrospective of Bird's career while only dedicating five pages to Magic's career. And half of Magic's chapter is about his post '91 years in which he contracted HIV, became coach of the Lakers, and returned to the game at the age of 37.

He also failed to mention Bill Walton, the most fundamentally perfect center the game has ever seen, but included the likes of Robert Parish, Artis Gilmore, and Dan Issell due to their longevity and accumulation of points and rebounds.

Despite some of the obvious slights in this book, I recommend it as a good introduction to the history of the league. Yet, one must be forewarned to read too much into stats, basketball is not game like baseball in which the style of the game remains relatively constant for a century. The changes in style, flow, and tempo in every era causes individual stats to continually change. Therefore technical nuance is the key to understanding the effectiveness of a basketball player.

    5 out of 5 stars Basketball's real dream team!.......2000-01-20

Thinking that what we have here is just another book that gives you the 50 best at whatever sport, in this case basketball? Well before you say yes, you might want to open the book and see what you may have missed.

The book uses a unique concept of ranking within the guard, forward and center groupings, rather than the overall 50 best players. Picking the 13 best guards, 21 best forwards and 16 best centers and the task is certainly a tough one.

Along with each person selected you have a great explanation about the player and what makes him or her one of the best 50 players. After reading the book you and your friends can spend hours discussing which players are in the wrong order and you'll have plenty of facts to back you up.

From Pete Maravich and Michael Jordan, to Julius Erving and Larry Bird, there is sure to be someone you remember. This is the perfect gift for any sports fan and a great collectors item for any basketball enthusiasts.

      Book Description

"Feminist film theory will soon be a quarter of a century old. It has known the euphoria of the 1970s, experienced the contradictions of the 1980s, and glimpsed the reversals and political gains, which include women of color, of the 1990s." But, Patricia Mellencamp asks, what is the next move?

In this challenging look at twenty years of feminist film theory, Mellencamp elaborates on its rich history, drawing on her personal academic life, and offering inventive readings of a remarkable variety of films: recent Hollywood releases like Forest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Thelma and Louise, Basic Instinct, and Silence of the Lambs, and features and independent films made by women, such as The Piano, Angie, Orlando, Bedevil, Daughters of the Dust, Privilege, and Forbidden Love.

With a clever sense of irony and wit, Mellencamp poses a question from which her analysis takes off: What did Rapunzel, Cinderella and Snow White forget to tell Thelma and Louise? According to Mellencamp, they forgot what comes after "the end," after the wedding to the prince. So many women's stories, often by choice, stop after the prince whisks the princess away to live happily ever after. This book asks, what does "happily" mean for women? And what does "ever after" cost women?

This creative call to shift film feminism's infamous "gaze" from sex and bodies to money and work ascertains where film feminism has been and what it needs to progress. Rather than recycling and regaining the same ground, Mellencamp urges film feminism to explore and claim new territory.

4 out of 5 stars Tough reading, but worth the work.......2000-12-19

Art, music, film, language, society, philosophy, car stereos.

If you're interested in any of those things then I highly recommend you read this book. It's a collection of essays, lectures, and various other writings by Achim Wollscheid, German composer/artist/etc. who co-runs the Selektion record label with fellow composer, Ralf Wehowsky (also HIGHLY recommended).

Every piece in the book contains some amazing idea. One of the most interesting, and recurring, is the idea of creating art where the focus is not on it's content but on the context.

The stuff in here is really difficult reading, but if you take the time to *really* read this stuff, you can get a lot out of it (assuming you're interested in this kind of thing).

For a different perspective on the Dreaming, check this book out. Lots of great ideas for stories and characters (am looking forward to a troll PC running into a Gloam). Finally fills in a chunk of the mythological puzzle of WOD - dryads, sprites, etc.

As mentioned in the other review, however, the editing causes some difficulty - different stats for the same thing in different parts of the book for example. I had a real sense that each of the authors were responsible for their own sections of the book - they did not talk to each other often. The book is supposedly written from different C:tD character's points of view, but the meat of the book is very disjointed. All that aside - the material within is worth the effort.

4 out of 5 stars one of the best books for the game yet.......1998-10-29

Inanime is quite possibly the best book for this game since The Enchanted. Not only does it FINALLY present the inanime, hinted at since the first edition of the main rules, but it manages to present these rather alien creatures in an entertaining and intersting manner, and best of all, gives hitns on how to intergrate them with an already running chronicle. Unfortunatly, i was unable to give this book 5 stars, as the editing is particularly bad, esepcially in the mannekin entry, but otherwise, it's a wonderful book which i suggest wholeheartedly to any Changeling ST

Quick arrival and the book is fine, but not as informative as I thought it would be.

        3 out of 5 stars Meb.......2006-11-10

The book assumes that you are familiar with the Treo's instruction manual. This is not very satisfactory as the accompanying manual is not well written and hence forcing one to look elsewhere for a better book.
This book does show the very many things that the Treo is capable of and is certainly worth the value.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for me..........2006-07-10

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I was pleased to see that it discussed the normal, everyday interfaces AND the more in-depth way to access and/or use the features of the Treo. They also gave ideas on how other individuals are using the features in "real life" usage. It is a much better manual than the one that came with the Treo.

3 out of 5 stars Review of "Now You Know Treo".......2006-06-29

I was disappointed. I expected it to be more of a "how to" book instead it seemed to be selling the worth of the Treo. Telling how great it is and what it will do, especially if additional applications are installed on it. ~ acr

5 out of 5 stars Goes Way Beyond the Phone Company Manual.......2005-02-28

The Treo established new grounds in the cellular phone by merging the capabilities of the palm sized computer with the phone system. This combination has brought entirely new concepts in computing and communications ability.

The manual that come with the Treo is quite good, and explains what your particular phone company has implemented on your system.

But beyond the capabilities your phone company has put in, the Treo has other options, other accessories, other programs that may be helpful to your needs. This book goes beyond what your manual contains to explain all the features of the Treo. As an example, my phone company manual doesn't talk about using the Treo with a GPS adapter and maping software, but the book does. Both the Treo 600 and the Treo 650 are covered.

        2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2007-02-25

I've been very disatisfied by this book. It seems like three out of four questions/problems I look up aren't in this book. Like how to disable the mute function on the touchscreen that I keep accidentally tripping in the middle of a call with my cheek or chin. Where to find the page with the extra graffiti symbols? How to activate the find button? (I did figure that out). So you can see that my questions are basic and I have found this book to not be a very helpful resource, at least for the things I need to do.

This book was one of the most interesting I have read regarding the eruption. I found it to be accurate and informative.

My very favorite story was about Venue Dergan and Roald Reitan. Their survival was nothing less than a miracle. I believe the scars on their memories of that day is why they cannot be the couple they were before the eruption. I wish them the best, I understand the connection they still share whether they want to or not, and I want them to know, there are others that understand completely what May 18, 1980 has done to each family touched that day.

4 out of 5 stars The Lives of the Saint.......2005-04-28

On Sunday morning, May 18, 1980, the north side of Mt St Helens collapsed in the largest landslide in recorded history. Superheated water flashed to steam, and an enormous explosion roared out behind the crumbling slope. Within a few minutes, the mountain had lost 1,300 feet of its height, thousands of acres were devastated and 57 people were dead.

"Echoes of Fury" traces the lives of eight people who were caught up in the eruption and its aftermath: Don Swanson, a geologist who had persuaded a colleague to take his place at an observation post near the volcano; Roald Reitan and Venus Dergan, two lovers trapped in a mudflow; Donna Parker, whose brother was killed even though he was camped well outside the official danger zone; Andre Stepankowsky, a reporter who helped the Longview Daily News win a Pulitzer for its reporting about the eruption and its aftermath; Peter Frenzen, a graduate student who became the official monument scientist; Robert Rogers, a young daredevil who repeatedly risked his life to explore and photograph the erupting volcano; and Jim Scymanky, a logger whose crew was caught by the volcano's blast.

Parchman's book appears just in time for the 25th anniversary of Mt St Helen's eruption, and it is well worth reading. After briefly telling the story of the volcano's return to life in March 1980, Parchman quickly plunges into the story, describing the eruption and the terrifying events experienced by Scymanky, Reitan, Dergan and Rogers. After explaining what happened on that Sunday morning in 1980, Parchman covers the aftermath--the ash that blanketed eastern Washington, turning day into night; the mudflows that choked the Columbia River and threatened the cities of Kelso and Longview with catastrophic flooding; the lawsuit against the State of Washington and Weyerhaeuser; the devastation of the landscape; the rebirth of the mountain; and the lives forever changed by the loss of loved ones.

This is a gripping story, well told. Mt St Helens is a remarkable place--and, as its recent eruptions of steam and ash remind us, its story is by no means over.

Avast there all you Patrick O'Brian fans! Here is a personal narrative of the seaman's life in the age of sail: 1815-1882, and a classic of nautical literature. Dana was a Harvard student recovering from the measles when he decided it would be more interesting to do so at sea as a common sailor. In 1834 he joined a two-year voyage rounding Cape Horn to deliver cargo to California. All the color and detail of daily life at sea as well as descriptions of various ports. Rousing!

This book is written by a Harvard lawyer about his experiences as a young man aboard a sailing ship in the 1830's. It is a fascinating piece of California history as well as a firsthand look at the life of a sailor in the early 1800's. It is extremely well written and includes a final dissertation about the powers of the captain and the rights of the common sailor.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books.......2005-06-19

I reread this book about every three years. It never gets stale. It intertwines history, philosophy, and a personal travelogue in a book that is so well paced and entertaining to read that it is hard to imagine anyone that would not find it worthwhile. And if you are interested in sailing ships or what California was like in the 1830s, this is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, You Must Read This!.......2002-02-20

I know many people cringe at the thought of reading a narrative that seems to greatly resemble Moby Dick, but I tell you this better than Moby Dick and easy makes it into my top ten books I have ever read! Occassionally the text bogs down in obscure sailing terms, but that is an exception and not a rule, otherwise, it is sheer poetry and lights the fire of wonder of exploration, and makes a sea voyage from almost 200 years ago spring to life. I give you my favorite short little passage, which explains it so much better.

"So quiet too, was the sea, and so steady the breeze, that if the sails had been sculptured marble they could not have been more motionless. Not a ripple upon the surface of the canvas; not even a quivering of the extreme edges of the sail, so perfectly were they distended by the breeze. I was so lost in the sight that I forgot the presence of the man who came out with me, until he said, 'How quietly they do their work!'"

Dana so perfectly described sea life you will be a part of the crew, you will feel his fear, his wonder, his joy and his awe.

You will not regret reading this, philosophy disguised as a travelogue, a must-read!

                            2 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time.......2004-09-26

I was very excited about this purchase, but felt cheated when it finally arrived. I had hoped for a serious, systematic, scientific overview of the World Grid, and was sorely disappointed.

This book contained numerous grammar and punctuation errors, and shoddy images. It is difficult to take any book produced so unprofessionally seriously. If an individual does not attend to such details, how fastidious can they be about their scientific research? I try not to be completely superficial on this count, and have overlooked modest errors in small-press books that cannot afford top notch editing, but this level of incompetence is simply unacceptable.

I gave the book two stars instead of one because it does contain some useful information. For example, it includes a map of the grid as postulated by innovative Russian researchers, and correlates the locations of ancient monuments such as the Pyramids with node points. However, most, if not all, of this information can be unearthed with rudimentary web searches. The book does little more than make a flimsy circumstantial case for the existence of the Earth Grid, and most of the articles seem like drivel or filler.

I think the Earth Grid may exist. I was eventually able to find coherent descriptions that were not absurdly vague and are not the ramblings of lunatics. Not like most of Anti-Gravity and the World Grid, in other words. Books like this are the reason so many esoteric/alternative scientific theories have a bad rap.

One final note. I would exempt some of Bruce Cathie's work from these criticisms. The book contains articles written by different individuals, and Cathie is one of them. Cathie doesn't usually do a very good job of explaining things in laymen's terms, but I believe some of his claims/theories are correct.

                            1 out of 5 stars Complete tripe.......2004-08-28

I was given this book as a joke, and indeed it is laughable. I've read some ridiculous books in my time, but a greater load of tripe I have never encountered. And the worrying thing is, it's all written in deadly earnest, by borderline lunatics.

So what is this book about? It's a collection of essays by various authors about the 'World Grid', a mysterious grid of lines covering the earth and which are (inevitably) 'energetic' or something. Of course, the various authors don't agree with each other on just where these lines are located or what they are or do, but that doesn't seem to deter them.

The book relates the world grid to phenomena as diverse as anti-gravity, UFOs, the Philadelphia Experiment, acupuncture - I didn't spot crystals or rainbows but maybe I'm mistaken. Of course, this is mixed up with much misunderstood pseudo-science to lend it a veneer of credibility. Disingenously, the celebrated engineer R Buckminster Fuller is repeatedly cited simply because he invented a new cartographic projection (he did grids of lines covering the earth, see? QED!)

The quality of the reasoning in the book is best illustrated by a couple of examples:

The chapter 'International harmony based upon a music of planetary grid systems' presents the theory that political 'harmony' between nations is related to the 'harmony' (geddit?) of musical notes whose wavelength equals the distance between them. As if an extremely low note was resonating between the two nations, or something.

Apart from its patent ludicrousness, fully apparent to any sane reader, this theory raises numerous various questions which the author fails to address. E.g. Which part of the nations in question should the distance be measured from? (The pitch of the 'note' connecting New York and Moscow is very different from that connecting Washington and St Petersburg.) Are some of these individual notes meant to be harmonious and some dissonant? (Doesn't work musically as musical harmony requires more than one note.) What makes the sound wave reflect at each end?

And is she claiming that something is actually making these notes? If so, what? If not, are we meant to play these notes (with some vast foghorn or something), and if so what will then happen? (Actually she does give some advice on this last point: the note F 'represents the distance between Gomel in the Soviet Union and Sebha in Libya. Therefore [sic] the musical sound of F might be accentuated for harmony between these two countries'. Or then again, it might not. Probably not, actually.)

As another example, turn to page 46. Here we have a diagram of the 'Sefirotic Tree of the Kabbalah', which is a presumably ancient and mystical diagram of lines connecting virtues labelled Understanding, Mercy, Beauty etc. Then (inexplicably) we see the same diagram superimposed on a map of Europe and Africa, demonstrating how the lines intersect at various important locations such as Mecca, Rome, etc. Except that they don't. On closer inspection, the lines mostly miss these places and instead intersect in the sea or in the middle of nowhere. Never mind, eh, the theory still holds.

Basically, the authors of this book are extremely unintelligent (being unable to reason their way out of a paper bag), misinformed, and in many cases simply looneys. Buying their book will only encourage them.

                            5 out of 5 stars Anti-Gravity & the World Grid.......2001-11-26

Aloha - after studying Bucky Fuller geodesic geometry for 25 years, i found AG & WG best explains how cosmic energy works thru our 'crystaline' earth evolving with multi dimensional systems of fractal geometry. David compiles a great collection of new science articles that support further research, i do with astrology, cosmic weather & geospasm of earth-changes. Its the best intro to the multi-energetics secrets that big $cience & military been using for centuries to access & channel earth energy for power controls. We can use eco-energy for positive,
growing, creating & healing functions, when we feel it flowing around us!
Could the geodesic earth-grids be what guides the formation of mountains, canyons, cataclysms, etc? evolving our infinite variety of bioregional terrain, species & cultures that rise & fall with astrological patterns of power. Like the current shifting of Pices/virgo into Aquarius/leo age now opening us up to cosmic consciousness of energy flows thru our earth grids!

                            5 out of 5 stars Anti-Gravity Classic: 5 Stars.......2000-01-02

David Childress compiled this now classis collection of works relating to the geometric structure of the planet, the "world grid". Ancient civilizations knew about this geometry and sited their monuments at its points, including the Great Pyramid, Easter Island, and the Chinese and Maya pyramids. The Bermuda triangle is one such point among many. Many unusual natural features also occur at points which correlate with the earth grid geometry. For example, the Hawaiian volcanic seamount occurs at a 'tetrahedral' point which will be of interest to readers of Hoagland's Mars materials and followers of Drunvalo's flower-of-life work.

The book includes, among others, articles by Bethe Hagens & William Becker, who designed the EarthStar globe; Barbara Hero calculates and explains the musical equivalents of globe distances; Bruce Cathie's early method of detecting grid patterns through UFO sightings, and anomolies at other points, including nuclear testing.

A.G.W.G. shows many maps of the geometric relationship of sacred places, including the world, Europe, Afica, and Cairo. Also shows the maps of sites in Somerset England in the pattern of the costellation Canus Major. I highly recommended it for students of Earth Mysteries, Sacred Geometry, and for alchemists.
