Customer Reviews:
excellent source guide for silent film player dates.......1999-02-28
This is an excellent book, and absolutely essential to any author writing on silent films! Highly recommended; well worth the price.
Pricey but Worth It.......1997-12-18
Doyle brings to life a clutch of fascinating, utterly forgotten (even by real film buffs) performers from the earliest days of silent films in this superb collection of short biographical essays. The tales are gripping and well-told. The book's second half makes it a must-have for libraries and serious researchers: an amazingly detailed list of everyone who ever stepped in front of a silent camera; their birth and death dates and places. Doyle's research is staggering. It's a shame a major house couldn't have put this book out and given it a lower price and more photos, but anyone interested in silent films should save their pennies to buy this.
Book Description
Amid the battle for American independence and the struggle to invent a federal government, American Revolutionary leaders and intellectuals sought also to create an American culture that would unify a territory of immense regional, ethnic, and religious diversity. In a sophisticated, yet accessible, interpretive narrative, Eve Kornfeld examines the efforts of Noah Webster, Benjamin Rush, George Washington, Judith Sargent Murray, David Ramsay, Mercy Otis Warren, and others to invent a national literature, narrate a story of nationhood, and educate a diverse people for virtuous republican citizenship. Among the 31 documents following the narrative are early attempts at American epic poetry, excerpts from the first narrative histories of the United States, and commentaries on the place of women and Indians in national life. Headnotes to the documents, reproductions of early paintings and portraits, a chronology, questions for consideration, a bibliography, and an index are also included.
Book Description
So much has happened in the ever-changing world of chess since 1984, that this new edition of the essential companion to all branches of the game is now 10% longer than the acclaimed first edition.
Much of the original text has been rewritten to incorporate the latest research and developments. There are over 160 new biographies (most of them of today's players), hundreds more names of openings, many more technical terms, and more game scores and compositions than ever before.
Ranging from the earliest myths to the present, the Companion offers full coverage of all aspects of over-the-board play and correspondence chess, and other forms of telechess. Fully cross-referenced throughout, the 2,600 entries take the reader from laws and strategies to details of the
representation of chess in philately, literature, art, theatre, and film.

A Handy Companion in Getting to Know More About Chess.......2006-05-17
Spanning centuries and tracing it's origins to the dawn of civilization, Chess is one of the greatest and most storied games. Developing from both the East and the West into the most mentally challenging sport, "The Oxford Companion to Chess" informs and illustrates adequately the rich and colorful history of the game of kings. In well-written articles, this companion features the various facets of the complex game. The great players, the numerous openings and their variations, and many topics in relation to the game are represented, including illustrations and b & w photographs to complement the text. One could come across the controversial and brilliant career of Bobby Fischer and in the turn of pages read about Computers and Chess. One glances though "gamesmanship", defined by it's inventor Stephen Potter as the "art of winning games without actually cheating", or "mansuba", an Arabic term for a composed middlegame or endgame position which serves as a form of instruction or solving. And the beginner could finally learn what in heaven's name that "en passant" means.
Some entries are a bit short, where a more comprehensive description of the particular subject would have helped. The British authors could barely restrain their pro-Anglo anti-American bias, and their contribution to the literature on Morphy and Staunton does neither man credit, and poorly to the writers. The limiting comments on the former and the patronising attitude towards the latter are criminal untruths which the novice could take for granted, which is a shame as Morphy is considered by many to be the greatest player of all time, and Staunton did his utmost to avoid playing him.
Also, the jumbling in one close pack of each player's career record makes for a weary read, like reading paragraphs of mathematical computations without having to solve them. The authors should have blended them with the tale in the text.
Truly serving as it's title shows, "The Oxford Companion to Chess" is a good reference and guide for both veteran and beginner alike in exploring Caissa.
Great reading and excellent reference........2000-11-19
I don't believe the reader from Athens, GA that said this book helped his game. DON'T buy this book if you are looking for a book that will improve your game. (Its highly doubtful that you would improve much even after HOURS or even DAYS of reading this book.)
This book is a REFERENCE book only!! And it is a true jewel. I have both the '92 edition (In Hard-back), and the 96 editon. (A gift from one of my students that left the area. Obviously I would not buy the book, if I already owned a copy - I am not rich ... yet!) I can not help but believe that this book was the result of YEARS of work by the author(s).
Want to know what a chess "Automaton" is? Do you know what "The Bavarian Variation" is? What the "Noteboom" variation is? When a player lived? What was "Player X's" greatest tournament triumph? What happenned in "Cambridge Springs, 1904." ?? You will find the answer to all these questions, plus much more, in this book. Plus many nice photo's too.
For the chess lover who wants a good reference to look up virtually anything about chess. Or just the player who would enjoy hours of reading and learning about their great game. And for the real chess benefactors: Buy one and give it to the local library!! Get it today!! You'll thank me tomorrow!
Very detailed.......1999-04-17
This book really helped me in my chess-playing. As the review above says, it describes many many different words, terms, etc. It explains everything from the rules to what a zugzwang is (i wish this had a spell-checker). Best book on chess ever! (p.s. the '92 edition isn't a lot worse than this '96 edition)
Very good reference book for chess terms and players.......1998-06-07
This is a great reference book for looking up chess terms. Did you think that "Skittles" was the same as blitz chess in that a clock is used for example? (I did when I was reading Fischer's annotations in My 60 memorable games!) Your wrong! Skittles is "casual or friendly game or games played fast and without a clock". The book is also very strong on player biographies showing photos and key games.

Customer Reviews:
From knowing nothing to creating good layout.......2006-08-13
My only layout experience prior to getting inDesign was MS Publisher. This book got me up and running and quickly understanding this significantly more advanced software. I found most of the videos not very relevant, except for one or two chapters where the video covered a topic more thoroughly than the book did (example: pencil tool). Even though I would recommend this book to someone learning inDesign CS2, I have two negative comments I'd mention to them first:
First, in several of the exercises the author just instructs you to select things and do things yet does not fully explain why or to what end. In many cases, I had to stop and analyze what I was doing myself. I even had to access Adobe Help several times. Sometimes the reason why you do something reveals itself in the end, but I'm looking for lessons here... not dramatic endings!
My second complaint is that there is NO GLOSSARY! This severely limits the book's usefulness as a "go-to" reference. Fortunately for me I also picked up the book "Adobe inDesign CS2 @work" by Cate Brosseau Indiano; and even though I have not read that yet it does have a glossary I've been referring to while reading this book!
Excellent learning resource.......2005-10-17
My only complaint - and it's very small - is the author's assumption that a certain set of fonts is "always" installed with InDesign. Apparently, that "always" doesn't necessarily apply if you happen to purchase the educational version. While that's fine for now - I don't necessarily need huge piles of additional fonts - it makes the lessons a bit frustrating because they tend to rely on the fonts. For example, in teaching kerning and tracking, the author assumes that you've opened a file set in a particular font, which will yield very specific results on-screen - which you'll have some difficulty reproducing if you don't happen to have those fonts installed.
Other than that - I'm loving this book, and it's really making a difference in my comfort level working in InDesign.
A very useful tutorial and reference.......2005-09-23
If you want to quickly get up to speed with Adobe InDesign, look no further! The introductory video segues with the lessons seamlessly. The lessons themselves are thorough, and each step is clearly presented, making it simple for a new user to follow.
Additionally, I find the book an invaluable reference source.
absolutely horrid.......2005-08-10
I bought this book after reading the rave reviews that others gave. Unfortunately it did not meet up to my expectations at all. I found it difficult to get past the ridiculous graphics and completely silly text (even the layouts did not demonstrate strong graphic design). Also, I appreciate a good sense of humor, but I would hope that the author would aspire for something greater than using silly vocabulary to intrigue the reader. In fact this just made the text seem ridiculous, and I could hardly continue reading. Maybe this book is fine for dense people who are not familiar with adobe programs, but for an individual with any semblance of intelligence I would not recommend this book.
Excellent introduction to InDesign.......2005-07-31
I am very familiar with Adobe Photoshop, but found myself in a big hurry to learn InDesign. I'm very happy I chose this book. The book works two ways: Right now, I'm using it as a textbook in conjunction with the CD. I'm going page by page and chapter by chapter, learning every aspect in plan of study that progresses sequentially and incorporates new facets and functions logically. I like that I'm treated as an intelligent person who happens to be unfamiliar with a particular program, not as a dummy who must be talked down to. Yes, there is a certain amount of humor, but we stay on task. Once I finish the course, the book will remain by my desk as an excellent source of reference. If I were to change anything, I would add more video lessons (I just happen to like them) and I wouldn't use and reuse the exact same articles to illustrate different points (I grew really annoyed with that seventies frog). But, really, the book/cd combo (assuming you're committed) can turn you from a person who has never used the program to a person who can competently and productively use InDesign.

Book Description
Politics and Empire in Victorian Britain: A Reader is the first source book to track the role the British Empire played in domestic politics, social attitudes and intellectual and cultural life. Unlike most other books on this subject, the reader also highlights women's contributions to both domestic and imperial questions, and takes account of colonial men's and women's activities as well. The reader introduces the intersections of "home" and "empire" so that the effects of imperialism on Victorian politics and society can be fully appreciated.
Book Description
The strange new disease SARS erupted apparently out of nowhere and has spread at an astonishing rate. Scary as SARS itself is, the disease is also a warning of many possible such outbreaks to come. Featuring the disturbing story of SARS—where it came from, what it is, and how to protect yourself from it—as well as those of many other recently evolved deadly scourges,
The New Killer Diseases is a shocking call to arms.
All around us—in our homes, workplaces, and public spaces—bacteria and viruses are evolving at a feverish rate, and our best defenses against them are in danger of being overwhelmed. The threat posed by emerging infectious diseases is as formidable as any challenge the human race has ever faced, and the evolutionary scales may be tipping in favor of the microbes.
In
The New Killer Diseases, a respected immunologist and a veteran science author introduce the vital facts the public must know about the astonishing range of killer microbes we are up against. From the SARS and West Nile viruses to mad cow and Ebola, thirty new deadly diseases have arisen since the 1970s, and twenty old scourges, such as plague and cholera, are reemerging. But the FDA only recently approved the first new type of antibiotic in thirty-four years, and vaccines for many of the most lethal viruses are a long way from development. In addition, researchers have only lately discovered that bacteria have been swapping resistance genes—genes that help them evade the drugs meant to kill them—and are evolving new mechanisms to fight off even our best drugs at a startling pace.
Featuring many remarkable stories of people who have contracted bizarre new afflictions, including that of the doctor who first diagnosed SARS and then died from it,
The New Killer Diseases empowers readers by revealing in a gripping, detailed fashion the way these new diseases manifest themselves, the symptoms to watch out for, and how to get a correct diagnosis in time. The book also goes to the front lines of the war being waged by researchers and medical professionals across the country, profiling the pioneers who are leading the fight and introducing the latest scientific developments, from new genetic techniques to promising drug programs, which may allow us to beat back the microbe menace.
The New Killer Diseases arms us with the knowledge to protect ourselves and our families, leaving us alert and fully informed about the troubling extent of the formidable threat we face.

Customer Reviews:
Shocking! Informative! Powerful Book You Don't Want to Miss!.......2004-02-22
I could not put this book down and found the information extremely valuable and frightening! Forget reading a Stephen King novel, pick up this book and you will be horrified at the number of killer viruses, bacteria, and even prions (the substance responsible for Mad Cow Disease.) The authors have done an excellent job of showing the path of the newest killer diseases! A prolific book on the subject of newly emerging diseases!
Lions, tigers and PRIONS, beware!.......2003-10-23
This is not the sort of information that one should talk about at the next wedding reception; especially if there stands a food buffet complete with salad bar --- salad bars are the 'Typhoid Mary's' of our modern, super-infectious times.
Authors Elinor Levy and Mark Fischetti talk intelligently about 'super-spreaders."...No - not merely persons possessing big booties, but instead, people infected with nasty germs and viruses that pass it on to an inordinate number of unsuspecting saps. One day a person boards a bus, and by the next morning, they find themselves in isolation for treatment of SARS. Nurses and Doctors also become sickened by these 'superspreaders' and pretty soon, the World Health Organization declares an epidemic of one type of pneumonia that is tough to treat.
Well, the discussions about SARS,E Coli 0157, AIDS, Hepatitis C and over usage of antibiotics rage on throughout the 292 page labor of medical research.
Once again, the message to bring home is to WASH YOUR HANDS!
For God's sakes! Get up from this computer and knock those germie germs off su manos immediamente! Caramba!
On page 117 -- Chapter 4 -- Here come the PRIONS...oooh --- they're scary little non-living things...an entirely new class of pathogen that for years, scientists scoffed that they even existed. But PRIONS is what caused Mad Cow Disease in Britian, or the other fatal disease in humans referred to as Cueutzfeldt-Jakob disease. THe brain literally is eaten up by these cells that act wildly. Imagine a normal neuron is like a fold-up chair, and your brain is like a huge auditorium filled neatly with folding chairs lined up nice, orderly and neatly in rows. only Prions trigger your folding chairs to suddenly fold up wildly, like a metal folding chair that was hit by a car. Prions make your chairs mangled by their influence. Once the prions get a hold of your neurons, it passes on messages and in no time at all, your brain is a messed-up avalanche of a tangled mess of metal folding chairs, as if an 18 wheeler truck mistakenly drove through.
PRIONS our our newest microscopic foe, and doctors don't know how to kill them without also killing the victim.
The victim gets the prion infestation by eating infected meat, and for all we know, those cows in Britian had an outbreak and the heards were slaughtered in order to prevent them from infecting other cattle world-wide.
Sure hope it worked.
After scaring the bee-jezus outta the reader, the book finally winds down to what we can do about germ warfare, overuse of antibiotics and development of probiotics and other potential weapons against microbes that mutate and reconform their outer membranes to keep fooling man kind from killing them.
Hey - it's gonna be us or them.....somebody please pass the Ciprofloxacin!
Disturbing.......2003-10-14
In this disturbing new book, authors Mark Fischetti and Dr. Elinor Levy look at the recent trends in the evolution of germs and demonstrate the threat that they represent to all of humanity. Beginning with the recent advent of SARS, the book examines a plethora of naturally occurring pathogens, and how they have changed since the post-World War 2 years, when antibiotics seemed to represent the ultimate victory of man over disease. Increasingly, doctors have found that familiar (and treatable) pathogens are returning in new forms that are more deadly than those seen before, and are increasingly immune to existing medical treatment.
This is not a book for the complacent. In this book, the authors are sounding an alarm at recent trends, and are recommending quick action in the war between humans and germs. The book is crammed full of stories of the effects of the newer generations of diseases, and will shock and disturb anyone who doesn't take them seriously.
But, the book is not primarily sensationalistic, but instead treats the topic as a serious subject that must be explained to the lay reader. Indeed, at times the authors are quite optimistic, informing the reader of new and developing fields of immunology that promise whole new fronts being opened up in the war against germs. So, if you are interested in the present trends in medicine and diseases, then I would highly recommend this book to you. Indeed, if you have heard tales of SARS and Mad Cow Disease, and want to know what's going on, then you must get this book!
Well worth reading.......2003-09-21
I had no idea we were each under such serious threat from infectious diseases until I read this book. I ignored how vulnerable we all are. The book details the rise of infectious diseases in the past 25 years - 30 new ones in that short time.
The new killers are all here: SARS, West Nile, Mad Cow, flesh-eating bacteria, hepatitis C, HIV, plus possibilities of bioterrorism, and more.
Detailed stories of many of the victims are riveting; some died, some survive. I couldn't stop reading accounts of these people, what they endured, and the course of their illness. I learned how to recognize symptoms of the diseases, how these illnesses operate in our bodies, and how our immune systems, and drugs, try to battle them.
The book reveals how we have made things worse, but explains what scientists and politicians can do to protect us. Now I'm aware, and I know what to look out for to try to protect myself.
It's well worth reading.
