    Book Description

This is a story of a young entrepreneur who transformed the printing industry at the dawn of the computer age. Born in Alabama and raised in New York City by his mother, Bill Garth became the President of Lithomat Corporation at the age of twenty-seven; acquired Chemical Products Corporation at the age of thirty; founded Photon, Inc. at the age of thirty-five; and founded Compugraphic Corporation at the age of forty-five.

This book is both a personal account of Bill Garth's life, through his letters and family memories, and a history of his companies based on corporate records, public documents and private papers. It serves as a case study of corporate finance and intrigue, disaffected stockholders, fierce competition, litigation and, in the end, a prescription for starting a successful business.

This is also a story of strong and independent women: Bill's grandmother Lena, his mother Louise, his wife Sally and his daughter Susan. Though in the background, these women helped shape and sustain Bill's life and career.

Finally, this book is a story of the brave pioneers who venture into the unknown to create new businesses, who take amazing risks, who turn defeat into victory and who help to move our civilization steadily forward.

        Book Description

This accessible and jargon-free book, based on Eric Barendt and his collaborators' interviews with editors of national newspapers, journalists, and their lawyers, uncovers the extent to which libel laws stifle press freedom. The authors examine the present state of libel law (including the
Neill reforms and the law in Scotland) and then explore the impacts of libel law upon national and regional newspapers, broadcasters, and book and periodical publishers. This is a lively study which will appeal not only to journalists and lawyers, but to all who are interested in the freedom of the
press in the UK or media studies in general.

Ask Ed: Marijuana Law is essential to anyone who associates themselves with pot. Whether you grow or only buy small amounts for personal use, this book offers up a multitude of easy to understand methods for protecting yourself. Educational and entertaining, this book was enjoyable to me because it provided legal advice without reading like a law (Yawn!). I feel much safer armed with my new found knowledge, and I urge tokers everywhere to be smart and read this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but missing information for other countries laws........2003-01-02

This book was not too bad. It has some good stuff but really it touches on U.S. law only and neglects other countries like Canada where some of the best B.C. bud is grown. The different state punishment charts are pretty much filler since all the states are closely related and similar. That could have been summarized shorter thus keeping more room in the book for other good info. All in all not bad, but could be better.

Ask Ed : Marijuana Law : Don't Get Busted is a beautifully written book filled with common and uncommon questions about medicinal marijuana. The book is a useful tool for activists for medicinal marijuana or even the common person who wants to know about the subject. The book is written by one of the top writers on the subject of medicinal marijuana. I loved this book and found it helpful for statistical reports I have done on the subject, and even to improve my knowledge of the matter. I found it easy to read, and I keep at as a refrence guide for my own personal use. I recommend this to all who wish to have a better understanding of medicinal marijuana.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, but not mindblowing.......2003-08-03

Experienced and well-read player will learn little from this slim (though inexpensive) volume; it does make good light reading for the bus or something, and has plenty of good "reminders" in it. However, the real market for this book are novices, and experienced but unread bar players (who, I find, are often unaware of things that well-read players would consider basics, such as using throw to pocket a ball off a fozen combo that isn't aimed quite at the pocket; etc.) It's well-written and concise.

5 out of 5 stars Winning with Steve Mizerak's Winning Pool Tips.......2003-03-04

Steve Mizerak's Winning Pool Tips is a perfect tool for someone that wishes to improve their pool skills. This book is not intended however to help an expert fine tune their game. The book starts off with the basics such as grip and stance, and finishes with practice exercises that incorporate all of the skills learned in the book. Because I was already decent at pool, I thought that the first chapters on basic skills would be a waste of time. This however was not the case. I found while reading that I had major flaws in my form, and they were keeping me from getting to the next level. Once I corrected these problems I was able to utilize the more advanced techniques. Although concepts such as English, ball control, and table strategy may seem intimidating to a beginner, Mizerak explains each one in a simple manner. He also uses at least one diagram for each concept that he explains. This not only helps to visualize what he is explaining, it also allows for practice on each. If I did not quite understand something, I would just set up the balls on the table and follow the diagrams. I have read other pool books since reading Mizerak's, and I have found them to be over complicated and confusing. The simplicity and clarity of Mizeraks ideas make this book worth buying. Thanks to Steve Mizeraks Winning Pool Tips, I am not only playing better than ever, but I am winning.

What is great about this book is that it covers a little bit of everything. English, left english, bank shots, angles shots & gives helpful drawings that show you where your ball should go. The book is ment to be brief & it is. So it leaves you wanting more. Gives neet excersises you can try.

        Book Description

Helping front-end developers, back-end developers, and architects understand how they can get the most out of JavaServer Faces (JSF), this guide to the new official standard for simplifying Java web development explains what JSF is, how it works, and how it relates to other frameworks and technologies like Struts, Servlets, Portlets, JSP, and JSTL. Also provided is coverage of all the standard components, renderers, converters, and validators, along with advice on how to use them to create solid applications. The building of complete JSF applications is demonstrated with an in-depth case study covering complex user interface layouts, prototyping, and integrating templates with back-end model objects. Also covered are advanced techniques like internationalization, integration with Struts, and extending JSF with custom components, renderers, converters, and validators.

This book does not compare to "Core Java Server Faces" first edition by Geary and Horstman. The book provides fery few and not very useful code examples. The content is not very organized. Also, it does not address more advanced topics such as displaying very large result sets.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to the Manning Standard.......2006-11-07

I purchased this book based on my previously great experience with Manning Press books. I've found other books by this publisher to be easy to read and easy to comprehend. They usually give you just enough background information and then details on different aspects of the subject matter. This book just goes on and on and on about background information and implementation details that are of little use to anyone after they configure their first application. It takes too long to get to the meat of writing JSF applications. And once you get to where the meat is supposed to be, most of that has to be downloaded as a 300 page PDF from their web site. Not very useful at all.

If you are looking for good JSF information, I now use the Core book for information and the O'Reilly book for a quick API reference. If you want examples of great Manning Press books, please check out their "Spring In Action" and "JSTL In Action" books. Both are fantastic reads and full of great information.

Sadly, this particular book left a lot to be desired both as an instructional text or as an API reference.

The book is nice in overall but the examples should be better.
Core JSF is better and I recommend that one over this.

3 out of 5 stars Good book but swarm with typos.......2006-10-05

I am totally amazed from what a great technology JSF is. I have worked for so many years with Struts - JSF beats it definitely. And this book is quite good at teaching it. I would give it 5 stars for the content if there were no typos. There are swarms of them. I am currently on page 212 and I see them at least every 3 pages. What's bad about these typos is that they are all in important areas - not just misspelt words but messed up names of classes and objects. I am getting tired from them.

But again, the content of the book is great.

1 out of 5 stars Very few examples of java backing beans.......2006-09-20

            Book Description

The inauguration of Robert Maynard Hutchins as the fifth
President of the University of Chicago in 1929 coincided with
a drastically changed social and economic climate throughout
the world. And Hutchins himself opened an era of tumultuous
reform and debate within the University. In the midst of the
changes Hutchins started and the intense feelings they
stirred, William H. McNeill arrived at the University to
pursue his education. In Hutchins' University he tells
what it was like to come of age as a undergraduate in those
            heady times.

Hutchins' scathing opposition to the departmentalization
of learning and his resounding call for reforms in general
education sparked controversy and fueled debate on campus and
off. It became a struggle for the heart and soul of higher
education—and McNeill, as a student and then as an
instructor, was a participant. His account of the
university's history is laced with personal reminiscences,
encounters with influential fellow scholars such as Richard
McKeon, R. S. Crane, and David Daiches, and details drawn
from Hutchins' papers and other archives.

McNeill sketches the interplay of personalities with
changing circumstances of the Depression, war, and postwar
eras. But his central concern is with the institutional life
of the University, showing how student behavior, staff and
faculty activity and even the Hyde Park neighborhood all
revolved around the charismatic figure of Robert Maynard
Hutchins—shaped by him and in reaction against him.

Successive transformations of the College, and the
tribulations of the ideal of general or liberal education are
central to much of the story; but the memoir also explores
how the University was affected by such events as Red scares,
the remarkably successful Round Table radio broadcasts, the
abolition of big time football, and the inauguration of the
nuclear age under the west stands of Stagg Field in 1942.

In short, Hutchins' University sketches an
extraordinarily vibrant period for the University of Chicago
and for American higher education. It will revive old
controversies among veterans from those times, and may
provoke others to reflect anew about the proper role of
            higher education in American society.

              Book Description

This concise book provides an introduction to the scientific method of inquiry. This book not only presents not only a methodical approach to the proper conduct of science but also contains comprehensive coverage of pseudoscience and fallacies. Compact enough to be used as a supplementary book, yet comprehensive enough in its coverage to be used as a core text, this text assists students in using the scientific method to design and assess experiments.

5 out of 5 stars note to "an angry MIT student".......2005-11-12

Try reading the book first. I know this probably seems like a ridiculously quaint notion, but you might learn something and spare the rest of us the trouble of reading hollow, unsubstantiated rants.

5 out of 5 stars Good at what it does........2003-12-12

The scientific method consists of (1) posing the intitial defining question of the investigation, (2) exploring the subject of the defining question, (3) formulating alternative hypotheses, (4) testing the hypotheses, and (5) posing a follow-up question if the defining question has not yet been satisfactorily answered. Carey's book is helpful only in step 4: it provides basic guidance for testing assertions. It also includes discussion of different kinds of explanation. It was written for non-technical beginning college students; it would also be suitable for high school students as yuoung as age 15. It is not, however, really an introduction to the scientific method; the reader should have some familiarity with the scientific method before reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars supplement for critical thinking course.......2003-04-15

This is a practical guide to recognizing and evaluating reported results of experimental science. Carey does not deal with philosophy of science. Rather, he builds a vocabulary for distinguishing kinds of experiments and evaluating their results. He offers criteria for distinguishing scientific theories from non-scientific ones.

Carey includes innovative exercises that introduce students to the creative difficulties in discovering solutions to problems in science.

5 out of 5 stars Improves your critical thinking skills the scientific way........2002-08-11

This book provides you with excellent step-by-step examples in applying the scientific method to everyday life situations. It gives you the tools to assess the validity of scientific claims and to guard yourself against the weird and the pseudoscientific ones.

The numerous examples allow you to practice and sharpen your skills and give you an excellent idea how the scientific mind works (or should work).

              Accessible to the average reader.

Hmmm, for the decay of societies less mentally eqiuped it's not half bad. However, a somewhat reasonable man (Myself) would define this prattle as an illogical farse. I have dismissed awful pseudo-scientific books as entertaining in the past, but you Carey, well you define the word "inane".
