2 out of 5 stars Flashy Name, Boring Book.......2003-03-15

The main reason I purchase this book is because I am the HUGEST college football fan. I thought the name sounded pretty catchy and was interested to check it out.

When I finally got around to reading it, I found out that it was basically some guy telling stories about his growing up and going to Marshall to play football. He wasn't even a very good football player and the book got it's title from a conversation with one of his coaches after they crossed paths years after he graduated form Marshall. He tells so many boring stories about him and his friends growing up together. If this book can get published, then so could any book by anyone who ever played college football.

        Book Description

The Blackwell Guide to Theology of Popular Culture is a timely examination of the rapidly expanding field of theology and popular culture. It shows how the theological analysis of popular culture is undertaken, discusses the writers who are doing it, and outlines various general theories of popular culture.Using illustrations from the pop culture scene, ranging from the fiction of Nick Hornby and Chuck Palahniuk to novels about God, Disney fairytales, and the macabre television series Six Feet Under, the Guide identifies and discusses religious themes in popular culture. The author probes popular movies, novels, music, architectural design, television shows, and advertising for what they are saying about God, human nature, sin, salvation, and final redemption. An appendix provides an annotated list of books that offer theological readings of popular culture, and offers suggested readings on various zones of popular culture that lend themselves to theological analysis.

When reading this book, The Blackwell Guide to Theology of Popular Culture, I couldn't help but having conflicting feelings. The points that Kelton Cobb makes are very amusing. The chapters are grouped together in such a way that the book, though long, is easy to read. There is not a lot of previous knowledge that is required when reading Cobb. Many theological texts require a PhD in theology in order to properly understand them. Cobb deals with many famous pop culture movies in order to illustrate his points. I think this is a great way to actually assess the basic ideas of theology and culture in today's context. Very few authors are able to express the theories of our culture in a way that people can understand. This book was written about popular culture using techniques from popular culture that enable an average reader to understand the concepts at hand. I really liked his use of television and music and there ideas about the nature of God and man as well as other aspects of religious ideology.

I had to read this book for part of a Cultural Engagement class and I could not have been happier with the professor's selection. There are many times that things are pulled out of context or defined in a way to suit the author's own agenda without actually examining the culture accurately. In regards to the use of this book as a tool to understanding popular culture, I would have to say that this is definitely a great addition to any culture and theology course. Many of the textbooks that have defined culture and theology are from a past decade where the authors use popular culture that is not relevant for this time period. While the 1950's were a great time period, the applicability of some of the ideals of theology and culture are not appropriate for this time period. Fortunately, Cobb uses a myriad of different sources from popular culture from the here and now that, as a younger reader, I could definitely identify with. While this book is relatively expensive for light reading, I think that it is one of the best books on understanding and identifying mixing of culture and theological perspectives.

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Study.......2007-07-20

This is probably the best book on Theology and Popular Culture. Religious language and images pop up everywhere. In a systematic way one learns about the sheer range of different mechanisms through which religious language is found in music, film, and plays.

This game is excellent and very easy for anyone to play or ZM (Spaceship Zero's GM known as a Zero master). I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes old style sci-fi, were everything awesome is known as Atomic.....Like Atomic Rayguns, Atomic Zombies etc., think Forgotten Planet or the Day the Earth Stood Still from the 50's sci-fi genre. The rules are percentile based and are not d20(for a change) and all you need is the one book, even though thats all there is anyhow, you can find a few adventures to download on the Green Ronin SSZ website, they pickup were the adventure in the book leaves off, but are not required.

All in all an excellent buy.

Originally purchased this wonderful book for my son when he was four years old. It taught him basic information about our solar system that I mistakenly thought he was too young to understand. The data was presented in an informative and entertaining way. The book that I purchased came with a cassette tape and he was able to read along. He read and re-read the book so many times that he wore out the binding. The story is of a young boy who is befriended by "Planetron." As I remember, Planetron, a robot, takes him on a tour of the solar system. The book is colorfully illustrated with pictures of the planets and sun. Information about each celestial body is displayed with the picture. My son is 19 years old now and recently mentioned that it is the one book he really remembers and would like to keep as a momento of his childhood.

I enjoyed this book since I was thirteen-years-old, which is exactly the age of a boy in the story. I used to read the book over and over again many times because the future always fascinated me. Soon, the dreams of exploring our Solar System will come true. What's more fascinating the space stations will be built soon as the book says and factories will be placed in the orbit around the Earth and people will begin mining the Moon. It's sad that the book is out of print. It is exactly the book that young people need in order for their minds to be filled with dreams and hopes because they are our future. I hope that the book will be place into print again.

            Book Description

Forget those funky robot toys that were all the rage in the '80s, XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Transformations) is the ultimate transformer. This powerful language is expert at transforming XML documents into PDF files, HTML documents, JPEG files--virtually anything your heart desires. As useful as XSLT is, though, most people have a difficult time learning its many peculiarities. And now Version 2.0, while elegant and powerful, has only added to the confusion.

XSLT Cookbook, Second Edition wants to set the record straight. It helps you sharpen your programming skills and overall understanding of XSLT through a collection of detailed recipes. Each recipe breaks down a specific problem into manageable chunks, giving you an easy-to-grasp roadmap for integrating XSLT with your data and applications. No other XSLT book around employs this practical problem-solution-discussion format.

In addition to offering code recipes for solving everyday problems with XSLT 1.0, this new edition shows you how to leverage the improvements found in XSLT 2.0, such as how to simplify the string manipulation and date/time conversion processes. The book also covers XPath 2.0, a critical companion standard, as well as topics ranging from basic transformations to complex sorting and linking. It even explores extension functions on a variety of different XSLT processors and shows ways to combine multiple documents using XSLT. Code examples add a real-world dimension to each technique.

Whether you're just starting out in XSLT or looking for advanced techniques, you'll find the level of information you need in XSLT Cookbook, Second Edition.

5 out of 5 stars Useful XSLT Recipes.......2007-03-28

This book was very helpful in getting my first XSLT transform up and running in just a few days. Its Problem -- Solution -- Discussion format provides ready-made solutions for a range of transformation problems, from the simple to the more complex. In my case, I quickly found clear and straightforward illustrations of how to produce multiple text output files from an XML input file.

This book is not an XSLT language reference. But it is a good supplement to, for instance, Michael Kay's XSLT 2.0 and XPath 2.0 programmer's references.

            5 out of 5 stars What a time saver!.......2007-03-24

I've just completed a job where one of my primary functions was editing, teaching, and solving problems with XSLT. I started that job as an experienced programmer with little experience in XSLT. I frequently referred to this book whenever I thought, "I bet XSLT can do this, but how?" For example, if you are already familiar with common scripting languages and programming libraries, one of the first things you will notice about XSLT is a lack of regular expression functionality. I referred to the "search and replace" function in this book several times. This book is a real problem solver.

5 out of 5 stars Don't make the same mistake as I did!.......2007-03-04

This is a great book with a collection of XSLT solutions to difficult and non-trivial XSLT problems. It covers XSLT 2.0 and shows to you how elegant 2.0 solution can be comparable to ugly and monstrous 1.0 listing.

But don't make the same mistake as I did! It is not a learning book! It is a book for programmers that already know XSLT at least a bit and want to improve their skills in this language. If you don't know XSLT at all, it would be better to you to purchase another book together with this one.

4 out of 5 stars Some useful examples.......2007-01-11

The code examples in the book can be found online. While several of them are quite helpful, this book is by no means an exhaustive reference, nor does it clearly articulate the basics. See the w3schools website for this.

5 out of 5 stars COOKING WITH XSLT!!.......2006-10-07

Are you a developer? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Sal Mangano, has done an outstanding job of writing a 2nd edition of a book that offers hundreds of solutions to problems that developers regularly face in both versions 1.0 and 2.0.

Mangano, begins by briefly explaining the greater sophistication and complexity of Xpath 2.0. Then, the author shows you that almost anything one wants to do with strings can be done within the confines of XSLT; as well as, how the new features of 2.0 make it that much easier. The author then shows you how to push the limits of XSLT's mathematical capabilities, even though XSLT was not designed to be the next great Fortran replacement. Next, he describes date and time recipes that augment an area standard that XSLT 1.0 currently lacks. The author continues by exploring the problems XSLT was specifically designed to solve. Then, the author presents an overview of XSLT 2.0. Next, he provides recipes that control how text extracted from XML is rendered for layout on the terminal, on the text editor, or for import to programs that require delimited data, such as comma separated values. The author then covers XML transformations. Then, he presents a treasure trove of recipes that demonstrate XSLT as a query language. The author continues by demonstrating solutions to problems that arise when generating web content, including links, tables, frames, forms, and other client-side transformation issues. Then, he describes the transformation of raw data into bar charts, pie charts, line plots, and other graphical components. Next, the author shows you the advantage gained from representing the data that drives code generation in XML and illustrates how XSLT is ideal for writing code generators for C++, Java, and XSLT itself. He also includes some advance uses of XSLT. The author continues by providing extensive coverage of XSLT extensibility using Java and JavaScript. Then, he demonstrates useful techniques that can help you transform misbehaved XSLT programs into functional ones, even if you don't have a nature XSLT debugger handy. Finally, he pushes the XSLT envelope to show how XSLT is far more than just another styling language.

This most excellent book has recipes that range from simple string manipulation and mathematical processing to more complex topics such as extending XSLT, testing and debugging XSLT stylesheets, and creating graphics with SVG. More importantly, the recipes in this book will guide you through many different ways of applying XSLT.

                Book Description

This work explores the lives of people of sub-Saharan Africa and their descendants, how they were shaped by empire, and how they in turn influenced the empire in everything from material goods to cultural style. The black experience varied greatly across space and over time. Accordingly, thirteen substantive essays and a scene-setting introduction range from West Africa in the sixteenth century, through the history of the slave trade and slavery down to the 1830s, to nineteenth- and twentieth-century participation of blacks in the empire as workers, soldiers, members of colonial elites, intellectuals, athletes, and musicians. No people were more uprooted and dislocated; or travelled more within the empire; or created more of a trans-imperial culture. In the crucible of the British empire, blacks invented cultural mixes that were precursors to our modern selves - hybrid, fluid, ambiguous, and constantly in motion. SERIES DESCRIPTION The purpose of the five volumes of the Oxford History of the British Empire was to provide a comprehensive study of the Empire from its beginning to end, the meaning of British imperialism for the ruled as well as the rulers, and the significance of the British Empire as a theme in world history. The volumes in the Companion Series carry forward this purpose by exploring themes that were not possible to cover adequately in the main series, and to provide fresh interpretations of significant topics

For the visual historians among us, An Atlas of Rare City Maps is a cartographic feast. It presents 40 map plans of cities in Europe, Russia, the United States, and Asia--all published in the 19th century by England's Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, and all commissioned and drawn within a period of 13 years. See Munich, Calcutta, Dublin, and Warsaw, Madrid, Moscow, and New York as they once were, and relish the hand-colored, hand-lettered steel engravings. The maps are artistic gems, representative of an era of skill, and reproduced in fine detail.

                  Book Description

The map-plans in this collection of forty cities in Europe, Russia, the United States, and Asia were first published in the mid- nineteenth century by England's Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. These maps were all commissioned and drawn within a period of thirteen years, presenting a unique opportunity to compare urban development among 40 cities in 19 countries at one moment in time. An exquisite feast for the eye, the hand-colored, hand-lettered steel engravings are artistic masterpieces in themselves, representative of an era of exceptional artisanal skill. They are reproduced here in fine detail in an oversized format.
The Atlas of Rare City Maps includes both well-known European and American cities such as Amsterdam, London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, and Venice, as well as smaller cities like Calcutta, Edinburgh, Hamburg, Lisbon, Marseille, Parma, and Stockholm. An introductory essay by Melville C. Branch discusses the historical evolution of urban design, and provides a background on engraving techniques. Branch also evaluates each map-plan, remarking on the details of each engraving and the evolution of the forms of the cities, their histories, and demographic characteristics.
This rare collection first appeared in its modern form twenty years ago in a limited edition (Arno Press); long out of print, this book has been much sought after by architects, urban planners, and map enthusiasts everywhere. Princeton Architectural Press is proud to make available once again this valuable resource.

Discovered Atlas of Rare City Maps at Micawber books in Princeton, NJ. The college student/clerk said it was her favorite book in the store. I read it. Loved it. Gave it to the City Administrator in our town. He's so delighted by it that, after skimming it, he decided to read it one city at a time; like a morning devotional reading!

                  5 out of 5 stars Comparative design.......2000-06-10

This book contains some of the loveliest reproductions of old maps I have ever scene. Aside from the beautiful pictures, the author includes interesting and valuable commentary to help the reader understand these city plans in the context of history and geography. All those interested in urban design should read the eloquent forward of this book. It would be highly beneficial if more of our political leaders, and just people in general, understood this era in urban design- the end of the traditional and the beginning of the modern. With the help of this book, perhaps we can bring about a new commitment to intelligent and beautiful urban planning for the future.

4 out of 5 stars A good book indeed; highly recommend it........2007-03-21

To the curious minds of tomorrow:

I like this book for it is a rather comprehensive treatment of the subject, and is written in a clear prose. However, one should realize that the focus is solely on the mechanical behavior of thin films, which could be attributed to the authors background and research interests.

Virtually all properties of thin films (electronic, magnetic, optical, ferroelecrtic, multiferroic etc.) are affected if not chiefly governed by elastic coupling of "order" parameters with strains and such, especially at nanoscopic length scales. However, this book is primarly devoted to mechanical behavior of thin films in an isolated fashion. For instance, misfit dislocation and critical thickness phenomena in thin films is treated with linear elasticity models, so much so that it is of limited use in thin films of strongly correlated systems (ferromagnetics, ferroelecrtics, multiferroics etc.). Therefore, the uninitiated reader should proceed with caution.

At any rate, the book by Freund and Suresh would be an ideal introductory survey for those interested in the mechanical behavior of thin solid films, and I highly recommend it.

                  Cheers,

Okay we followed this book for our lecture in thin films given by the first author of the book LB Freund, one of the best instructors i ever had. i will try not to be biased by his teaching skills while writing this review. i would say that its a must reference who are working in thin film area be it experimental or modeling. but i believe that you need to have a sound background atleast in continuum mechanics and elasticity to fully follow the mechanics (of deformation) part of the thin film on your own. the best thing i liked about this book is its methodical structure for e.g. deriving the basic Stoney's relation by minimizing the energy, then talk about its assumption in detail and then removing those assumptions one by one to make the relation more realistic (and offcourse more complicated). there are other things like material properties of common thin film materials used in microelectronics, topics on surface morphology etc. his writing style is very clear... again not for someone who doesnt have necessary background.

                      Book Description

This book explores a crucial dimension of Indian history: the politics of wildness. It suggests that wildness was affirmed in various ways by early nineteenth century forest communities as a way of challenging upper upper caste values. With colonial rule, wildness was marginalized, leading to
