Book Description

I have traveled far and wide, far beyond the simple parish I envisioned as a young man. My obligation of service has led me into diverse yet interrelated roles: college teacher, theologian, president of a great university, counselor to four popes and six presidents. Excuse the list, but once called to public service, I have held fourteen presidential appointments over the years, dealing with the social issues of our times, including civil rights, peaceful uses of atomic energy, campus unrest, amnesty for Vietnam offenders, Third World development, and immigration reform. But deep beneath it all, wherever I have been, whatever I have done, I have always and everywhere considered myself essentially a priest. —from the Preface

"Father Hesburgh should be on almost everyone's list of the most influential figures in American higher education over the past few decades. In these fascinating memoirs, he chronicles the transformation of Notre Dame from a somewhat mediocre midwestern university into a major national teaching and research institution. As president of Notre Dame for 35 years, he used that position as a platform to argue the truly critical issues not only within the academy, but outside as well. The chapters on his involvement with the Civil Rights movement and criticism of early Vatican policy on academic freedom at Catholic universities are most compelling. Recommended for all readers, especially in these days of seeming cynicism and doubt." —Library Journal

"William F. Buckley might disagree, but the former university president is clear on the three most important things in life." —_New York Magazine_

"Father Hesburgh says that each one of us can do something effective in the cause of a better world. God, Country, Notre Dame itself embodies an obvious refutation of the apathetic notion that 'in the modern world one person cannot make a difference'." —Commonweal

"The temptation is to subtitle this book, 'Adventures of Superpriest.' If Father Hesburgh made it all up, it would still be a wonderful story, a compendium of what-ifs . . . its warmth and humanity are infectious, and most readers will not have the nerve to fight off the pleasure of going along." —Chicago Tribune

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Proud to be an American.......2000-11-29

I "read" this book for the first time on audio cassette and quickly ran out and bought it" Years later, I still think of it and am still amazed at what a tremendous person Father Hesburgh is. If I did not know its true, I would not believe that a person could accomplish so much in a lifetime. Knowing that this country and faith produces such great men, makes me proud to be Catholic and an American. This book would make a great, great gift!

5 out of 5 stars The Good gets Better.......2000-03-29

        Book Description

Here caddies tell of the triumphs and disappointments of Ryder Cup clashes from 1985 to the present. These are the insights and behind-the-scenes stories from the bag-men who were there with the world-famous players. Sam Torrance's caddie recalls the historic putt which gave the first victory over the Americans after 28 years in 1985; Ballesteros' caddie recalls a "different balls" controversy; Bernard Langer's caddie recounts the story of the famous missed five-footer putt which lost the Cup in 1991; and Costantino Rocca's caddie tells of the decisions which helped his man beat Tiger Woods in 1997. Each chapter includes a biography of the caddie and his player, a resume of the match, and a description of the trials and tribulations on the course.

              Book Description

Arguably one of the greatest golfers in the world, Seve Ballesteros was the youngest Masters Tournament champion in history, until Tiger Woods' victory at Augusta in 1997. Seve takes an in-depth look at one of golf's most flamboyant enigmatic characters. Unlike other "sports" biographies, Seve follows Ballesteros from his impoverished childhood in Northern Spain, through his troubled and triumphant early career, to the more settled and self-actualized man that he is today. Seve not only focuses on the man's golf career, but also takes a hard look at the man himself. It covers his personal life, which author St John describes with unparalleled honesty and clarity.

First published in 1993 in Europe to critical acclaim, Seve has been extensively revised and updated for this American edition. Seve author, Lauren St John, is a golf correspondent for the London Sunday Times. She has traveled the world for almost a decade covering professional golf. Golf Digest's Ed Weathers says "the golf correspondent for the London Sunday Times, St John, is a good, wide-ranging reporter," and goes on to compare Tiger Woods to the once "dewy-eyed Lancelot greeting the dawn," Seve Ballesteros, and advises: "Tiger, read this book."

Seve: Ryder Cup Hero, reads like a novel. Eloquently written this book is funny, touching, and very interesting.

                        Book Description

This book focuses on American society as a transglobal nation and examines the temporal dimension of diasporic incorporation in New York City. It argues that immigrant neighborhoods are faced not only with issues of economic and political integration, but also are engaged in a sublime and relentless effort of harmonizing the cultural rhythms of their daily life with the hegemonic temporality of mainstream society. Although much energy has been spent in explaining the segregated or ghettoized space of ethnic communitiies, there is, in contrast, a dearth of data on the subalternization, genealogy, and inscription of minoritized temporalities in the structural and interactional organization of the multicultural American City.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Interesting Points, Great Author!.......2004-10-13

I had to read this book for a course that I'm taking here in Berkeley, and I have to say that Professor Laguerre is a great teacher as well as a great writer. This book is very interesting as it talks about the inequality between non-Christians and the "mainstream" not by the usual problems of segmentation within the city or class or race, but it talks about how cultural differences affect the rhythms of daily life, and how the year runs on different tracks for different people, such as the Jews or the Muslims (who have their holiest times of the week on Saturday and Friday). Laguerre talks about how these temporal discrepancies affect New York specifically, and cities in general. If you are a Berkeley student, I definitely recommend Laguerre's American Studies 84 course.

The book, especially the first chapter, is very dense as you first learn about the idea of the chronopolis and diasporic temporalities, but once you get past these ideas, the anecdotal examples given within provide interesting and provoking ideas for you to think about. Also, some of the stories contained are kind of funny. I definitely recommend this book if you are into sociology, or if you are interested on the Jewish and Muslim cultures. If nothing else, this is a very nice read.

5 out of 5 stars If you own a PC you can`t go wrong buying this book!.......2006-06-07

For people who love computing but don`t want to be bogged down with techno-crap, this book is for you. We all run into problems sooner or later and we waste a lot of time, energy, and money trying to fix them. This book will help you diagnose the problem, fix the problem( or find out how to get more info)and most importantly, how to keep your PC running at it`s best. I had the Blue screen of Death,( but not anymore)and I was on the verge of buying a new PC. Think what I saved. My PC has never worked better. Thanks Mark!

5 out of 5 stars Most Helpful Book On Computers Ever.......2006-04-18

I'm 13 and own several books on computer issues, but none of them are as all inclusive as this one. This book covers networking, hardware, software, printers and internal issues, most of it from a troubleshooting piont of view. This book is VERY easy to understand and is perfect for people who need a book that covers everything

5 out of 5 stars Best computer troubleshooting book.......2006-02-27

I have been involved with computers for more than 20 years, and this book is the best troubleshooting book that I have seen for computers. The information is very well organized and easy to use. There are many flow charts in the book to quickly resolve problems, and there is a very helpful table listing different problem symptoms and solutions. The book also has in-depth chapters on certain problems. It is a book that can easily be used for quick reference for a problem, or it can be studied in detail. Blank screens, software and hardware problems, faulty power supplies, and input/output devices are all discussed in the book. Solving just one problem would pay for the book, and you'll be glad you bought it after using it several times.

5 out of 5 stars More helpful than any other source.......2005-08-30

I have spent hours on the phone with Dell, Microsoft, SBC, HP and countless other ISPs and manufacturers and have not been able to resolve issues or restore my system to usable status. This book tells you all that you need to know to put your system back in order, without transferring you around, routing your questions to India or blaming software or other system components for your problem. If you are tired of wasting your time using "tech support" this is the book you should have.

                          5 out of 5 stars A great help.......2004-06-07

I had looked at this book for a long time, but delayed buying it. I finally bought it as a supplement to other, more technical books I have. It gives me the information I need without numbing my mind in geek-speak. During the first 24 hours after buying it, this book got me out of several difficult problems quickly and effortlessly. Surprisingly, it is not the diagnostic flow charts I have found most helpful, but the book's running text located by way of index entries has been the most helpful to me in solving the problems I had, one of which was the Blue Screen of Death related to the recognition of a hard drive on an OS installation.

                                Book Description

Before the age of Industrial Revolution, the great Asian civilisations - whether located in the Middle East, India, South-East Asia, or the Far East - constituted areas not only of high culture but also of advanced economic development. They were the First World of human societies. This book examines one of the driving forces of that historical period: the long chain of oceanic trade which stretched from the South China Sea to the eastern Mediterranean, passing through a series of rich urban emporia. It also looks at the natural complement of the seaborne commerce, its counterpart in the caravan trade. In analytical terms, the book emphasises the methods of multi-dimensional history by highlighting the intricate relationship between space, time and structure. Its main achievement is to show how socially determined demand derived from cultural habits and interpretations operated through the medium of market forces and relative prices. It points out, for the first time, the unique and limiting features of Asian commercial capitalism, and shows how the contribution of Asian merchants was valued universally, in reality if not legally and formally. Professor Chaudhuri’s book, based on more than twenty years’ research and reflection on pre-modern trade and civilisations, is a landmark in the analysis and interpretation of Asia’s historical position and development.

5 out of 5 stars Genetics -- past, present and future.......2003-10-21

This fascinating book surveys the major facets of modern genetic research. Its various sections -- on biotechnology, social behavior, DNA in the courts and others -- are self-contained. This results in some repetition, but given the wealth of detail survyed, repetition is not unwelcome. Among the observations I found particularly intriguing are: the U.S. DoD operates the world's largest DNA databank; we will ultimately find the genes that contribute to manic-depression, but we will "map, clone and sequence" the genes that predispose to schizophrenia by 2005; the frequency of cystic fibrosis is a genetic puzzle and surprising (p. 214); Reilly finds virtually no evidence of individuals being denied access to medical coverage, or paying more for it, because of genetic testing (pg., 231-232); finally, efforts are underway to breen transgenic pigs more amenable to humans and vice-versa(!), to alter human bone marrow so as to make it more "pig-like."

                                5 out of 5 stars Abraham Lincoln's DNA.......2002-12-10

I came across this book while I was away at sleepaway camp for the first time at Vasser Collage. One of my older friends, Ashley, was reading this book and I got interested. I spent my remaning [$$$] on this book, and let me tell you! This book is so much more than just a textbook, it helped me explore, for the first time, the world of DNA. Now I am usinf this book for a biography of Abraham Lincoln, and its helping drasticly. Now I am even more sure that when I grow up, I want to be an epidemiologest. If I could choose any book for a favorite, this would be mine! I would highly recomend this book for anyone whose careeer path is similar to mine, of anyone skilled in the medical feild, or anyone looking for a long, interesting, read.

5 out of 5 stars Tales about DNA, genetics, clones and ethics.......2001-12-30

A very interesting book about DNA, genetics, clones and ethics. Each chapter in this book is a thrilling tale about something like fragile X-es, double Y's, the sheep Dolly or the Cheddar Man.

The painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was the dwarfish son of first cousins, who may have suffered from a hereditary dwarfism.
Abraham Lincoln, however, was an uncommonly tall man. His height may be a sign that he had a genetic disorder known as "Marfan Syndrome". In 1962, the syndrome was diagnosed in an 8th-generation descendant of the great-great grandfather of the president. The most serious health problem Lincoln could also have been predisposed to depression, because major depressive illness has a significant hereditary component.
Well-known genetic diseases in royal families are the madness of King George and the bleeders among Queen Victoria's descendants. The son of the last Tsar, Nicholas II, was one of those bleeders. Nicholas and his family were executed and recently DNA techniques were used to identify their bones.

3 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, but loses its path!.......2001-03-21

When I first picked up this book, I was excited, because it seemed to combine my love of history and science. Indeed, I enjoyed the first half of the book, with its tales of identifying the Czar's family's bones and debating whether certain historical figures had certain conditions. It made me think about all of the great historical answers hidden six feet under. However, the second half of the book turns to straight genetics and the ethical questions new discoveries have raised. Personally, I did not enjoy the second half as much, though I am appreciative of its quality.

5 out of 5 stars Twenty-four stories about history, justice, human behavior.......2001-03-02

Abraham Lincoln's DNA And Other Adventures In Genetics is a fascinating and informative collection of twenty-four stories about history, justice, human behavior, plants, animals, diseases, and ethical dilemmas as reflected in the rapidly evolving science of genetics. The title story refers to the question of whether or not Abraham Lincoln had the tissue disorder known as Marfan syndrome and the committee that considered testing his DNA to find out. The committee decided not to. But DNA was used to establish that the Russian royal family did indeed all die in a mass grave. DNA profiling has also become an established means of identifying crime suspects. Reilly tells these illustrative stories with a genuine flair that not relates engaging accounts, but also teaches fundamental facts and principles in the science of genetics. Abraham Lincoln's DNA And Other Adventures is very highly recommended for both students and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in genetics and how this fledgling science is beginning to exert a powerful influence on our public health, culture, and community.
