Raising the Bar: The Championship Years of Tiger Woods
Tim Rosaforte Manufacturer: St. Martin's Griffin ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0312284624 |

Since storming onto the PGA Tour in 1996 and winning the Masters in 1997, Tiger Woods has topped golf's leader boards in most of the important categories, including ink. No golfer--indeed, no athlete, except maybe Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali--has been the subject of so many words in such a short time. In Raising the Bar, Tim Rosaforte adds to the flow, focusing on how Woods rebuilt himself and his game after the 1997 Masters and the slump of 1998. What's happened since, of course, is history. And Rosaforte is there for every part of it. The conquests. The struggles. The endorsements, the contracts, the commercials. Tigermania. The horrible performance in the 1997 Ryder Cup matches. The doubts. The questions. The reassessment and reformulation of his game under the guidance of Butch Harmon. The weightlifting and fitness routine. The streak. The majors. The Grand Slam. It's a riveting triumph of will and focus, hard work and raw talent.
If Woods's game raises the bar--and there's no doubt that it has--Rosaforte's chronicle can't quite match the standards set by his subject. Yes, the book is well reported and certainly readable, but it seems rushed, a recapitulation churned out to be timely, rather than an analysis of a phenomenon that might be timeless in itself. Perhaps it's just too soon to expect that in a book, but if Tiger can raise the bar on the course, there's no reason the scribes who have him in their sights can't raise it some, as well. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
The Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open, the PGA Championship. The Career Grand Slam.At age 24.He could very well be the greatest golfer to ever play the game.Raising the Bar is the story of how Tiger Woods changed his life, his game, and the way America views golf. There have been many biographies written about Tiger's life and early days with the PGA, but each ends with his triumphant victory in the 1997 Masters Championship. In the last few years Tiger has endured a lifetime of experiences, including his growing pains, his perceived slump in 1998, his incredible winning streak from 1999--2000, culminating in his career grand slam. Critically acclaimed golf writer and commentator Tim Rosaforte has watched Tiger since he burst onto the golfing scene and been an up-close observer of the Tiger's life both on and off the course. Totally revised and updated, Raising the Bar includes Tiger's latest victories-including his historic 2001 Masters victory that completed the Tiger slam-and provides intense insight into his amazing career.Customer Reviews:
Tiger Woods.......2003-01-08
This book is a very easy book to read, even though it's a big book. Tim uses very easy words to understand. This book follows Tiger through every championship starting from his first one.
I would recommend this book to people who like sports and seeing people do well even though they weren't expected too. I'm the kind of person that likes books that shows how good people do coming from a not so good background. I give this book *** because if follows every detail of Tiger starting when he was a kid.

Raising The Bar.......2001-04-12
I almost gave up on the book after about 30 pages, but it was given to me as a gift and I like to finish that which I start.
If this book had to be written (?) then it should have been written by someone who could at least hold your attention, if not excite.
Tim Rosaforte shows little writing talent and one wonders what he is doing to raise his own bar. His readers and Tiger deserve better.
Having read John Feinstein and having grown up with the writings of Jim Murray perhaps my bar is set too high.
To anyone who wants to take a chance on this book I recommend the public library.

Perfect Crash Course on Web-Based Training.......2006-08-01
Long on tips. Weak on theory........2003-02-28
The book really has very little to say on instructional design methodologies. The reader is told to bear X, Y and Z in mind and then thrown a few sample scenarios (with screen shots). In many ways this is the tenor of the whole book: a vast and never ending list of do's and don'ts and qualifications to those do's and don'ts. I have to demure from the consensus among the other reviewers and adopt a minority position because quite frankly compared to other eleraning books, I found this one almost unreadable. The book is fullof particularities that are never adequately situated within a theoretical framework. It just seems like bad science to base so many recommendations on induction.
To be fair, it's good stuff in places, and frequently relevant, but can you retain it? Who wants to read a several hundred page long list of tips?
In terms of theory, balance and scientific worth a far better book, for my money, is by Alessi and Trollip.
Excellent e-learning overview.......2003-01-21
It succeeds in that it:
1. Takes the reader step by step by step through all of the big-picture considerations (and several subtle but important nuances) one must undertake to create an e-learning program from scratch, or convert an existing training program to one that can work on the Web
2. Is written clearly, concisely and simply - - an absolute rarity in a world of technology handbooks that are muddled and/or require the reader to already have a Ph.D. in computer science to understand.
3. Introduced me to small and large ideas that I had not considered but that made perfectly common sense when I thought about them.
This book made me a disciple of William Horton, and gave me the confidence that if I wanted to, I could transform my classroom training to the Web yet avoid a lot of errors I would have committed had I not read this book.
Great, Great Book.......2002-03-26
Chapter Organization is very good, every chapter can be read as whole unit, without going backward and forward reading other chapters because ideas are completely developed within a chapter.
Horton, is my fav. author on e-learning topics.

With Gog and Magog right in the middle........2002-05-04
APOCALYPSE AND/OR METAMORPHOSIS begins with an outstanding Phi Beta Kappa Speech delivered at Columbia University on May 31, 1960. Already on page 2, this book declares, "Resisting madness can be the maddest way of being mad." Religion is considered "the learned ignorance, in which God is better honored and loved by silence than by words, and better seen by closing the eyes to images than by opening them." (p. 3). The second selection in this book is aphoristic. "Daphne, or Metamorphosis." It seems to be about poetry. "Petrarch says that he invented the beautiful name of Laura, but that in reality Laura was nothing but that poetic laurel which he had pursued with incessant labor." (p. 10). Similarly, the next section considers Sir John Falstaff in Shakespeare. "The horn, the horn, the lusty horn, Is not a thing to laugh to scorn." (p. 37).
The fifth section of the book, "The Prophetic Tradition," is an attempt at "Ecumenical prophetic history," (p. 47), which is contrasted with "Hegelian triumphalism." (p. 47). Islam is seen as part of the prophetic tradition. "Protestants should be able to see that the need for a Protestant Reformation was there already in the seventh century C.E., to be perceived by prophetic eyes. Blakeans should be able to see that there is no way to accept `Again He speaks' in Blake unless we accept that again He speaks in the Koran." (p. 48). The anti-philosophical attempt by Justinian to purify Christian doctrine by closing the schools of philosophy in the year 529, and Christian opposition to the Gnostic Judaeo-Christian heresy "which struggled to avoid the catastrophic rupture between Christianity and Judaism" (p. 49) is the background for Norman O. Brown's philosophical attempt to conclude, "Islam is to be envisaged as dialectical evolution, or evolutionary mutation, in the prophetic tradition, in response to the limitations built into the structure of orthodox Christianity by its compromise with Roman imperialism; by its commitment to scriptural canon, creedal orthodoxy, and episcopal hierarchy; and by its consequent scandalous history of schism and persecution (duly noted in the Koran)." (p. 50). Pages 69 to 77 provide the translation of M. M. Pickthall (THE MEANING OF THE GLORIOUS KORAN) of Sura 18 ~ The Cave Revealed at Mecca. "Lo! Gog and Magog are spoiling the land. So may we pay thee tribute on condition that thou set a barrier between us and them?" (p. 76). Gog and Magog are also mentioned on pages 77 and 78. The rest of the book might be considered more philosophical, and "The Turn to Spinoza" (pp. 117-141) is a particularly intellectual approach to "The reality of our life, the reality of which we are ignorant, the reality which we do not want to accept." (p. 129).

Jacques Vallee Manufacturer: North Atlantic Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1556431252 Release Date: 1993-01-12 |
Book Description
Known principally as an investigator of the UFO phenomenon and a science fiction novelist, the French-born Vallee (now a resident of the U.S.) has also worked as a computer scientist in both academia and industry. UFOlogists will not find the answers to all of their questions here, for although Vallee believes that UFOs exist, he has no idea just what they are. Therein lies the excellence of his dazzling diary: it offers a glimpse into the mind of a scientist who seems to challenge every preconception and established piety. To his academic training as a mathematician and scientist, which stressed rational approaches to problems, Vallee has brought an interest in the mystical, the psychical, and the paranormal. He has been a Rosicrucian and has studied the works of ancient scientists like Paracelsus. His diary is replete with profoundly insightful, often devastating observations about the strengths and weaknesses of France and the U.S., their academics and their researchers in industry.Customer Reviews:
The Long, Strange Journey to "Magonia".......2003-07-18
This book takes us to his beginnings. Starting in the late 1950s, just before the ascendancy of De Gaulle and the establishment of the Fifth Republic, when he is an astronomy student and aspiring Science Fiction writer and ends in the immediate aftermath of the publication of PASSPORT TO MAGONIA. Along the way we have a first hand account of the "ufo controversy in america" and elsewhere. Additionally, there are reflections on a convention-bound France, where Vallee has to struggle against senior astronomers serene indifference to computers. Reflection on the US: like de Tocqueville, young Vallee looks upon this country with a mixture of admiration and horror. Here and there, there are insights into the looming computer revolution that would explode in the 1970's and 1980's. Vallee is in France in 1968 and records his take on the student uprising of May and June.
And then of course, there are the accounts of love. Like the entry where Vallee writes that he and his lover have just torn the bed and now he lies in the full flush of "jouissance" thinking "why do i need a vow, when I can still taste in on my lips" (DAMN! Those french know how to live!)
Yes there's a lot to get out of this book than just UFO's. But that is the main topic. We see the defining moment for Vallee when he tracks an anomalous object only to have the senior astronomer summarily tear up the print out. We see Vallee's burgeoning fascination with the subject and his passion that science find an explanation, first corresponding with Aime Michel, then making contact with J.Allen Hynek, Project Blue Book's consultant and at the time still a "skeptic."
The insight into Hynek is probably the most important part of the book. We see the role that Vallee plays in encouraging Hynek to admit that there are unexplained cases. Vallee is there when Hynek gets new of the "Soccoro landing" and sees Hynek in the aftermath of the "marsh gas" fiasco. Vallee's admiration for Hynek is obviousk, but there are also other detail. Hynek's love of the limelight and his pride at having little fringe benefits from the air force like his own jeep and driver. We find out that Hynek was an Anthroposophist (a disciple of Rudolf Steiner) and we see him at his most gullible when he brings back "film proof" of psychic surgery (Vallee & Co. are less than impressed).
Besides Hynek, there is correspondence with John Keel in the full grip of paranoia while dealing with strange happenings in the Ohio River Valley, a brief in encounter with Al Bielek (he of future "montauk project" fame) trying to pass himself off as a government spook, an account of origin, trouble history, and anticlimatic ending of the Condon Committee. But most importantly is the "paradigm shift" that Vallee undergoes as a result of studying the phenomenon from a cautious advocate of the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (EHT) to a proponent of thinking in terms of Extra-Dimensional Entities and paying close attention to Psycho-Social factors and parallels with folklore and mythology and the backlash he suffers (and continues to suffer) from the "believers" who make up the rank and file of the UFO subculture.
As an added bonus the paperback edition includes the text of the "Pentacle Memorandum" written at the time of the Robertson Committee.
In sum, a first hand history of the UFO phenomenon in the 1960's. When read in conjunction with Jim Moseley's SHOCKINGLY CLOSE TO THE TRUTH and Patrick Huyghe's SWAMP GAS TIMES one can get a very full picture of "UFO history" of the last 50 years.
Serious stuff.......2002-12-10
If you are interested in whats "out there" read and learn. If you on the other hand scoff at all mentions of aliens and such, and consider man to be the center and grandest part of the universe, read this man's books with an open mind and you might begin to doubt some long held beliefs. Vallee is quick to dismiss frauds and charlatians, and focus on the real issues. Arresting stuff.
Really Interesting.......2002-11-05
Jacques Vallee is a legend in Ufology (study of unidentified flying objects). More than that, he's a true scientist, which is a rarity in "the field". This book takes you through some pivotal moments in UFO history.
You'll learn a lot in this book, not just UFOs, but the meaning of science itself.
Certainly an essential book for anyone studying UFOs... or the possibility of alien life. (Are we alone in the universe?)
On a side note, this books is pricless for all the little tidbits and reflections on Allen Hynek, "The Galileo of Ufology".

Cries of the Sea:World Inequality, Sustainable Development and the Common Heritage of Humanity (Publications on Ocean Development, V. 33)
Peter Payoyo Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9041105042 |
Book Description
A treasure lies at the bottom of the oceans. This treasure takes the form of a legal and ethical principle which may illuminate the potential for an enriching international community in a world of growing disparities. It is the principle of the Common Heritage of Humanity. The 1982 United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea delineated an Area and then proclaimed the Area and its resources `the common heritage of mankind'. The author suggests that the terms `common', `heritage', and `humanity' invite a larger perspective on the law underlying the Convention. Cries of the Sea provides a unique view of `the deep blue sea' through the lens of the politics of international ocean law and policy and in particular through the exposition of the Common Heritage of Humanity as a fundamental principle of international law. The book explains why -- and how -- the Common Heritage principle constitutes an indispensable ingredient in any global programme for sustainable development. Legal philosophers and practitioners alike, in the ocean arena and beyond, will find that this work offers an intriguing intellectual and moral challenge. This book received the first Arvid Pardo Prize for outstanding scholarship on the Law of the Sea.Books:
