Very intresting book!.......2001-07-31

This book is written by the same man that made the Bertram 31. If you like boat or are just looking for a good intresting book, then pick this one up. It's not a novel but more of a documentary. I liked the way this book apporaches the world of boating. So aslong as you like boats this is the book for you.

I can't believe that nobody seems to have discovered this humorous and yet tender account of the life of P. J., the cat.

The book's author who was first a journalist and then a novel writer decides that his pre-school daughter needs a pet, and decides that a cat would be less nuisance than a dog. Stopping by a pet shop, he spends the princely sum of ninety-eight cents for a straggly waif of a kitten. It's instant love for his daughter, Twink, and the book covers their life together over the cat's lifespan.

The very core of this true story is in the almost mystical rapport between Twink and "Prince Julius", who quickly becomes P. J. Twink soon considers P. J. as her best friend, and so it is. Other members of the family are friends, but only Twink and P. J. are best friends to each other.

Through the various chapters, we learn first how the author somewhat reluctantly started considering P. J. a friend, and then P. J.'s encountering various changes including moving from a New York City apartment to a rural Connecticut area, wildlife, a growing feline population, and the author's second wife, a self-proclaimed cat hater. Always, though, there is the relationship with Twink, P. J.'s best friend.

The events are all told with a cat person's sense of humor, until the very touching final chapter.

If you are like me, you grew up listening to popular music, "girl groups" singing catchy melodies, without regard to the cultural or historical context of the tunes. Dorothy Marcic, in a well-researched and documented, highly readable book, has succeeded in placing our nostalgic memories into a larger framework. The political picture, the economic realities, the evolution of female roles are all chronicled by incorporating the popular music that enthralled us over the years. Who knew that the path from "My Man" to "I Will Survive" led us along our own path of liberation and independence. A book that entertains and makes you think at the same time! If you ever get the opportunity to see Dr. Marcic perform and illustrate her material in person, by all means do so! Highly recommended!

An incredible synthesis!.......2002-05-19

Whether our popular music is a reflection or shaper of culture, it's fascinating to read the lyrics of these songs -- and to see how far we've come over the past century. I really like the way that music is used as a thread for weaving together political and world events, as well as psychology, business, and spirituality. A great read!

Respect: Women and Popular Music is a powerful book that chronicles the best known music of women in the 20th Century and examines the sociological and personal implications the music had. This book didn't really help me a whole lot because it's a little too basic in terms of teaching you how to figure out the program. But it does do a good job of explaining the very basic features and benefits of using Autodesk Revit

this book helped me on the first day it arrived. i needed help on how to "model" a curtain wall. there it was. the steps that the book went into detail were very good. i keep this book at my desk at work!

No 1 Reference for any Architectural Office.......2005-10-14

I've been using Revit since release 4. I'm on release 8 now.

The help menu within the software itself is detailed and user friendly, but it does not address issues specific to architectural offices i.e. implementing new software into an established practice.

The book 'Introducing & Implementing Autodesk Revit Building' more than adequately addresses every conceivable issue regarding implementation and when used in conjunction with Autodesk Revit's built in help menu should be the only references you'll need to take you from concept to completion on just about any sized architectural project.

It's a sound investment for the novice or more advanced Revit user.

Mary Barmeyer O'Brien has taken the covered wagon diaries and memoirs of ten young girls and harmonized them with own characteristic style of writing to illustrate the many human perils endured along the emigrant trail.
As with her other book, "Into the Western Wind" which depicts young boys' perceptions of the rigors of overland travel, "Toward the Setting Sun" is also an insightful glimpse into how young girls perceived the hardships and dangers of emigrating. A few examples would be:
Nine-year old Catherine Sager's 1844 journey which was devastated by the deaths of her mother and father, leaving Catherine and her six siblings orphans of the trail.
Thirteen-year old Olive Oatman's 1850 travels along the Gila Trail turned for the worst when both parents and her sister were killed by Apaches. Olive was then captured by the Apaches, later traded to the Mohave Indians and spent more than five years as a captive.
Eleven-year old Lucy Ann Henderson's 1846 party coping with the accidental death of her younger sister after drinking an entire bottle of laudanum (opium mixture). A few days later her mother gave birth to a baby girl.
Along with the experiences of seven other girls' stories, the reader gains insight into the realities of western overland travels. An enjoyabe book.

Bloodland: A Family Story of Oil, Greed and Murder on the Osage Reservation.......2007-08-01

I was delighted to find this book on the market. I lived in Osage County for 18 months in the late 1950's. I was in the oil business and supervised drilling wells and producing properties all over the the County(Reservation). I heard many oral reports of how the Osages were miss treated, especially in the teens and the 1920's. I visited the Osage Agency offices in Pawhuska from time to time. I now appreciate the beauty of the countryside and the intelligence of the Osage Tribe. I think Mr McAulffe did an outstanding job in researching his grandmother's life and reviewing the history of the Osage Tribe in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. I made friends with the Osages I met and understand, by having known them, what it means to be an Osage. Mr. McAuliffe made it plain why this Tribe became wealthy through their negotiating skills with the The Great White Father's agents. I understand why Mr. McAuliff is proud to be an Osage.

Bloodland - Osage Reign of Terror.......2003-08-24

This was a very well-written book, very close to accounts of those times in Osage country that I've heard from other Osage families. Dennis starts off his book as a typical middle-class white American, just researching old family stories and geneology. He begins to see things as an Indian, and realizes that his grandmother was one of the thousands of Indian victims of greed here in Oklahoma. Her murder, like so many others, was virtually ignored by the world. On several levels, his family story is the story of Indian Oklahoma. I applaud Dennis for his courage to continue his research, and to write the truth!

A very disturbing tale.......2003-01-29

This was a very riveting book. I wasn't too sure how much I'd enjoy it when I started. . . it seemed at first like the author was simply out to trash white people. Maybe that was my own guard going up. . . I don't know.

Regardless, this turned out to be a very good book. The author finds out late in life that his grandmother committed suicide. As he investigates his family history, it turns out she was murdered, instead.

This all happened in the "Reign of Terror," a time back in the 1910's and 1920's in which literally hundreds of Osage Indians were murdered for their land and money (they had recently become quite rich because of the discovery of oil). McAullife's grandmother was caught up in this terrible tragedy.

At times I found it hard to follow who the author was talking about. Fortunately, the front of the book contains the author's family tree--this was very useful at times in helping me figure out who was related to whom.

This book tells about a shameful time during our state's (and nation's) history. It is worth reading, if for no other reason that we won't repeat our mistakes.

We're Still Ashamed of Our Past.......2001-06-21

I originally bought this book because I thought it sounded like an interesting fiction. It quickly became obvious that it wasn't a fictional story at all, but rather another atrocity in American history that is only known through rumors and campfire stories. This book is a expert mix of personal obstacles for the author and unbiased historical documentation of an Osage tribe and its gift/curse of oil wealth. I doubt many people are strangers to the tales of Native abuses by whites, but I've asked many people if they've ever heard of the Osage murders at the turn of the century when oil was struck on their land. None had. This is a wonderfully wrought piece. I recommend it to anyone with a flare for history, the glorified as well as the darker chapters.

Incredible, fascinating.......2000-05-24

I read this book with my book club members which culminated with a "speakerphone chat" with the author. I must say that this was a wonderful and powerful novel that gets the reader thinking. I am not an Indian, and I am ashamed to say I had no idea about the Reign of Terror or the prejudices felt by Indians of any tribe. This book opened my eyes. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how this true murder mystery was going to turn out. In the meantime, I got an awesome history lesson that I will never forget.

this book does not go into enough detail to fully prepare you for the mtels. it also has a lot of wrong information and tons of misspellings. there are also a lot of incomplete thoughts and sentences. i was amazed that this book has been published! you would think that someone had to proof read it before they sold it but i guess not!

Try to not buy this book.......2006-03-03

For an educational guide, this book is rife with errors. It is amazing that spelling, punctuation, and grammar do not count in a teacher text. They also got Newton's Second Law of motion WRONG F=ma NOT F=m/a. Big difference. You are better off saving your money and buying study guides for individual sciences from people like Barron's.

Helpful - but with a disclaimer. . . .......2006-01-09

This book was very helpful for my preparation in taking the Masachusetts Teacher Licensing exam for MTEL General Science (5-8). In the version I had the answer key was screwed up such that certain questions you needed to really search through the answer key for the answers to certain questions. Many of the questions in the book were on the exam (July 2005).
