Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent insider view.......2005-07-01

As a former IBMer this book brought back many memories of the "IBM Way", good and not so good.

4 out of 5 stars Peeking Under the Covers of Big Blue.......2002-12-03

International Business Marionettes gives the reader a vivid, often painful, view of the intersection of one man's life with the corporate behmouth called IBM. It is a psycho-biographical look at the American corporation's benign neglect of the individual and a telling tale of one man's compliance, rebutal and, eventual, survival in spite of it.

Max Beardslee is a bright, young trainee at IBM. His test scores are off the charts and his confidence high. He knows that the rules of the game require bending and is willing to do so to climb the corporate ladder. Even after the scales of fairness tilt too far away from his interests, he remains trustful that his sacrifices will be rewarded.

But then the threads of the garment he calls a career begin unraveling at an alarming and, at times, uncontrolled pace. The life of luxury, reward and success he was promised by his corporate master turns into a living Hell.

International Business Marionettes is a telling tale for those who struggle in corporate America, especially in the high tech world. The author is poignant in his description of the adversities passed on to him by this major corporation. One only wonders about other disruptions, interuptions and expectations that formed the character who ultimately fell into the corporate trap...

5 out of 5 stars Praise for International Marionettes.......2002-04-26

I liked the fact the book was written by an ex employee of a major corporation in a manner that related the true feelings that many management employees experience, but do not have the courage to talk about, much less write about. It brings home the job pressures and the need to continually perform and improve. It also clearly outlines what lengths the corporate world will go to to maintain control.

The author is to be saluted for having the backbone to fight back and to stand for principle. Most of all it is a story of his tenacity and need to persist and to get answers. Several of the chapters deal with the author's dark side and indiscretions which add flavor, but cause one to say "why did he do that?"

5 out of 5 stars Gripping.......2002-04-24

This is a compelling tale about big business and how it can affect individuals. Once I started reading, I literally could not put it down. If anyone truly wants information as to how big business actually conducts itself, this is a must read.

4 out of 5 stars Great for students and young professionals.......2002-04-17

While this book deals with many topics, it contains valuable lessons for those aspiring to enter the ranks of corporate life. Being someone that has only been working for a handful of years, this story serves as a reminder that no matter what, I cannot forget that life is short and that corporate life is even shorter (and not as meaningful).

Through the author's hardships and successes, others can gain a lesson or two on living life, playing the corporate game (or not playing the game) and how to keep everything balanced.

A very entertaining read.

In 1992, Dave Branon of Sports Spectrum joined with Joe Pellegrino to present Christian role models in baseball. Now Branon and Packer Ken Ruettgers give us a role model in football, a sport in desperate need of same. When the bad boys get all the ink, we all need to look beyond that to the behavior and character of players like Ruettgers. Branon - we're waiting for the good guys of basketball. The mainstream media don't even try to hide their rolling eyes and smug boredom when Christian players praise The Lord. Get over it, media, and ask yourselves why you're disturbed at a player who kneels in the end zone to thank his Lord rather than break into a dance of self-glorification.Bit by bit, book by book, the good guys are gaining. For more on the Branon touch, try a subscription to his magazine, Sports Spectrum. It's a whole new world out there, sports fans, a world where the Minister of Defense is in the pulpit

It's information is insightful, Biblical, practical and Ken puts into the hands of his readers a do-able, day to day playbook for Dad's to win with their kids. Ken's insights, stories and truths empower and equip men to leave lasting Godly imprints in the daily lives of their children and all those whom they touch....he helps us Packer fans to realize that though it may be hard to fathom...there are indeed higher priorities in life than football and dare I say it...the Green Bay Packers

    Book Description

From All Quiet on the Western Front, the Academy Award-winning "Best Picture" of 1929-1930, to Dances with Wolves, the 1991 winner, many of Hollywood's most popular and enduring movies have been screen adaptations of written work, including novels, stories, and plays. In this practical, hands-on guide, veteran TV and screenwriter Ben Brady unlocks the secrets of the adaptation process, showing aspiring writers and writing teachers how to turn any kind of narrative material into workable, salable screenplays for film and television. Step by step, Brady guides novice screenwriters to the completion of a professional screenplay. He begins with an incisive discussion of how to evaluate a written work's potential as a screenplay. Then he discusses each step of the writing process, showing how to identify the plot and premise of the play, develop character, treatment, and dialogue, and handle camera language and format. Brady illustrates each of these points by developing and writing a complete screenplay of the novel Claire Serrat within the text. With these tools, beginning screenwriters can draw on the rich resources of words in print to create exciting screenplays for film and television. Written in vivid, entertaining prose, the book will be equally useful in the classroom or at the kitchen table, wherever enterprising writers ply their craft.

            Book Description

We may be living in a material world, but Angela McRobbie pinpoints a "new materialism" in In the Culture Society. She provides a lively, incisive look at how different artistic and cultural practices develop in contemporary consumer culture, by examining the new populism of young artists such as Damien Hirst and Tracy Emin and the proliferation of underground forms of dance music. McRobbie explores how musicians such as Tricky, Talvin Singh, and Goldie have incorporated Black and Asian social history into a distinctive sound. She also investigates the relationship between cultural production and feminism through the new sexualities of teen girls' magazines.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect beginner book.......2007-06-06

This book was perfect for the newbie to PHP programming. It walks you through examples with perfect clarity and a great explanation of why. I wish more how-to books were written just like this one. Other programming how-to books are very difficult to read and require a reference library to comrehend all the unexplained material. This books explains everything it introduces. I will look for more books from Mr. Ullman.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive for Beginners.......2007-05-12

I like this book series. They provide a foundation that I find much easier to "digest" than online tutorials, articles, or guides. [Am a note-taking learner who needs a solid resource around, afterwards.]

The topic flow is nice; you ease into a wider scope of applications
with simple examples that can be built upon. It's very helpful when authors provide online errata, resources, forums, etc. and Larry Ullman's text does.

                - a beginner who made progress ;-)

Easy to follow and done at a nice pace. I am a total beginner and I had no real problems with it. I did find it difficult to convert the examples in to usable applications though.
I will be going on to the next book in the series pretty soon though.

In many respects, all wars are alike. All soldiers compete for position and mobility; all forces struggle for the larger territory, the greater power. Yet each war has as well its distinguishing characteristics—its unique features, its most-remembered events, its particular frustrations that haunt the dreams of its veterans. In Korea, it was the hills. The Korean hills offered observation, artillery, and mortar advantage to whichever country controlled them. On these hills, thousands of soldiers fought decisive battles for a few feet of land or for higher elevation. This reference work identifies more than 400 hills, outposts, complexes and phase lines that were key components of the Korean War, allowing researchers to relate individual battles to the larger narrative of the war. Each entry details major operations fought in the area, including the units involved, the area’s strategic value in the overall war, the type of combat, and the munitions involved. Geographic features known by both numbers and names are cross-referenced for ease of access.

This dictionary is a useful reference for the scholar of the Korean War to have at hand while reading military histories of the conflict. It is divided into 3 sections: the first lists hills designated by numbers (their elevation above sea level, in meters), in numerical sequence. The second section lists hills with given names, in alphabetical order together with alternate names. The third section lists named ridges, outposts, complexes, and phase lines in alphabetical order. Each entry (usually) describes the principal actions that occurred there; the months, days, and years; the military units involved; the appalling numbers of casualties; the outcome; and sometimes the post-armistice status. The 24 maps dispersed throughout the text (sometimes out of sequence) are cited by number when pertinent, but without their corresponding page number, so the reader must flip through the book to find the map each time one is cited.

Since each entry in a dictionary is a unit unto itself, it should have a map and page citation if pertinent. Needed is a list of maps with their page numbers positioned after the Table of Contents. If all the maps were collected together at the back, it would not be necessary to cite page numbers. Furthermore, the maps should have captions identifying the sector.

The book is marred by a few imperfections: some typos, misspellings, and wrong numbers, years, units, and words. It is hoped that these will be rectified in a second edition.

If a person put a pea under a saddle blanket on a horse the cowboy would not feel it - the horse would and would soon be bucking or have a massive back ache. For this reason it is obvious that the author has no clue about riding or horses in general. Regardless, the story and illustrations are cute with bright colorful pictures and humorous faces on the characters.

The daughter of a wealthy Texas rancher, Farethee Well, uses a black-eyed pea to find her true love. This story is an excellent read-to-me book for children ages 4-9. The story is a parody of the fairy tale, Princess and the Pea. It is full of the language of the West and invites both boys and girls into the story for a lively tale.

Thesis: Black cowboys have been avoided and left unseen in the history of Texas and ranching in the western United States though their contributions have been vital to the development of ranches, towns and settlements scattered throughout Texas.

Content: The Civil War left old men, women, children and slaves to tend the daily necessities of farm and ranch life in the South. The same was true in Texas. Leaving cattle-tending responsibilities to slaves many were able to master the duties of the cow-puncher. With no barbed-wire to delineate pasture and keep herds together, cattle roamed wild. Left unchecked the cattle population exploded. Though slaves were charged with cattle-tending they were not allowed firearms to protect themselves from predators or hostile Native Americans.
During Reconstruction Texas cattlemen had two issues to address. The first problem was expounded by the second. With cattle populations growing unchecked through the war years there were far too many cattle for local markets. Cattle would have to be driven up trials to railheads to be shipped to eastern markets. Money was to be made, but getting the cattle to market was a difficult issue to surmount.
The second problem for ranchers was that emancipation had removed their workforce. The shortage of labor, especially the shortage of skilled cow hands was answered by newly free blacks, who had gained experience cattle-tending since before the years of the Republic. These men were generally assigned the more dangerous tasks of breaking broncos. They were commonly paid at a lesser rate than their white counterparts, but there were exceptions of equal pay. Frequently cattlemen would even pay their cowboys in cattle. Through these opportunities of receiving cattle for work many African-Americans were able to amass large herds of their own.

Critique: Sara Massey's book is a collection of twenty-five biographical sketches written by as many writers. They range in content and quality from expanded obituaries to in-depth biographical essays illustrating one man or woman's contributions. Each article illustrates the important role African-Americans had in the settlement and development of Texas and ranching through the life experiences of diverse individuals. Each of the twenty-five lives examined illustrate different experiences and contributions of African-Americans to the settlement of Texas and development of the cattle industry in the west.

I had no idea that there were so many black cowboys and cowgirls before I read this book. Many black cowboys/girls are reviewed in the book and each has his/her own, fascinating story. It is an extremely interesting book and I highly recommend it to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Ensemble Cast of Authors Add to Cowboy Lore.......2000-03-26

Never-told-before stories of the ways things were for black cowboys ( and cowgirls) make this book worth a look. Whether your interest is in anything Texan, cowboys in general, or African Americans, I recommend this book to you. An ensemble cast of authors has given us detailed and personal looks into the fascinating and largely unknown lives of black cowboys. The writers bring the characters affectionately to life with stories as told to them and rich descriptions of the experiences of the black cowboys. It was a hard life, but not one devoid of humor and satisfaction. This collection brings the reader a panorama of lively characters and tales as wide as Texas itself, and makes a worthy contribution to cowboy romance and lore.

                  Book Description

Born in northeast Texas in 1867, Matthew "Bones" Hooks was a true pioneer who not only built a town, schools, and churches, but also broke down racial barriers as one of the first black cowboys to work alongside whites as a ranch hand.

After his retirement as a cowboy, Hooks heard of a horse nobody could ride. He challenged the horse's owner to let him try and his success became known across the country as "The Ride."

Throughout his life, Hooks negotiated between both sides of the railroad track, using his uncommon charm to gain the support of the wealthy to provide resources for the poor. He helped many people buy homes, educate their children, and start businesses in his adopted hometown of Amarillo, Texas. His is the seldom-heard story of how blacks pioneered the American west.

When I began reading everything I could find on the history of Amarillo, Texas, one name kept coming up: Mathew "Bones" Hooks. I could find nothing in the library that was devoted to such an interesting man, so it was fantastic to learn about the publication of this book. It details the story of a man that did not let the customs of the time lessen his dignity or influence. He may not be as famous as other minority leaders, but Mathew Hooks, in my opinion, deserves this book and a place of honor in history. I am grateful to the author for the thorough research--the addresses for long-forgotten community hubs add to the fascination, as well as the interview material from people who remember Hooks. The author does a good job of documenting and explaining the various ways in which Hooks made the Panhandle of Texas a more peaceful place for people of all races.

This groundbreaking book tells the incredible stories of black Dallas women who survived and prospered despite overwhelming obstacles. From Dallas's earliest days to the present, these amazing women have made outstanding contributions in education, religion, civil rights, business, clubs, politics, the arts, and culture. Black women of Dallas, along with their sisters around the nation, have blazed new trails by overcoming prejudice to accomplish their objectives and improve their communities. Dallas and Texas are better places because of them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent History of Black Women in Dallas.......2004-12-08

I had the pleasure of purchasing this book while visiting the Black Museum in Dallas during the month of August 2004. I was delighted to read about many women I'd always heard about while growing up in the city of Dallas more than 60 years ago. The pictures are great and the information was quite enlightening. Many people live and die without knowing that Black people have made positive contributions to the city's culture and the lives of it's people. My purchase today is a gift to my mother who also found the book "very exciting". It was wonderful to look through the book with her as she was reminded of her early years in Dallas, noting places that no longer exists, and recognizing faces and recalling memories. (Dorothy Foster/Oceanside, CA) Thanks.

This is a fun puzzle-type book, but with a difference from most such books. In this book, you will really learn some interesting mathematics. The authors' way of presenting the material is very effective. First, they present a problem or puzzle for the reader to attempt to solve. Then they show the mathematics behind the problem. Then they lead the reader through the solution and show how the mathematics is used to make solving such a problem easier.

I have an engineering degree and a minor in mathematics, but this book introduced me to some new areas of mathematics. It also helped me understand some areas that had been confusing before, such as applications of modular arithmetic and linear Diophantine equations. I bought this book in hardback a few years ago for $38. This new Dover edition in paperback at $14.95 list is a steal.

4 out of 5 stars Recreational mathematics as course work.......2001-03-15

This book is the heavyweight champion of problems in recreational mathematics, containing a large number of very detailed problems in many areas. The presentation strategy is to develop the topic by using problems followed by an explanation followed by a detailed solution. The style is largely that of a textbook, which in fact is what it is designed to be. The authors developed the material as the main text for a course they teach in applied problem solving.
The chapters are largely independent, so it is possible to pick and chose the topics for a course. Do not let the word recreational in the title lead you to believe that these problems are bunnies. I am a co-editor of Journal of Recreational Mathematics and I found myself thinking long and hard about some of these problems. Granted, many are straightforward, but there are enough of the head-scratching variety to satisfy every taste. The general topics are logic, basic number theory, graph theory and games, with a few other topics interspersed.
With hundreds of problems, detailed solutions to the demonstrations and hints for most included, this is a resource unlike all others. If you teach a course in mathematical problem solving or beginning computer programming, you cannot help finding a problem in here that you can use to illustrate a topic or as a test question. I have already used a couple as the seeds for some programming exercises. Better yet, consider it as a textbook for your course in mathematical problem solving.

I first became acquainted with this book about twenty years ago when it first appeared. Since it didn't fit into a standard niche in college mathematics curricula, it never really caught on and, before the Dover edition, was out of print for a number of years.

This was a shame, as this is both a wonderful and remarkable book. It has a broad appeal; amateur mathematicians, professional mathematicians, and puzzle buffs should all find something in it to interest them. It is both fun and rewarding at the same time. One can learn a great deal of mathematics from it. It also contains a method for solving linear Diophantine equations that I have never seen anywhere else.

The authors have added a chapter on probability which should further enhance this highly original work.

                              Book Description

The world's species, genes, and ecosystems are going extinct at an alarming and unprecedented rate, largely as a result of human activities. If this trend continues, human civilization itself is at risk. Yet we remain either unaware or unconcerned.

In Biodiversity and Democracy, Paul Wood looks at this dilemma from another perspective. He argues that the problem can be traced back to how we think about both biodiversity and democratic societies. He examines the concept of biodiversity, recasting it as an essential environmental condition that is being irreversibly depleted, not a biological resource that can simply be replaced. He then demonstrates how democratic policies cater to short-term public preferences, with little or no concern for the long term.

Wood considers a number of contemporary theories of justice and concludes that biodiversity conservation is a legitimate constraint on current collective preferences and that biodiversity should be conserved, even if it is not in the public's current best interest to do so. This is a strong message that carries serious implications for constitutional and statutory legal reform in liberal democracies.

This book will be of interest to academics and professionals in the related fields of conservation biology, environmental law, public policy, environmental ethics and political philosophy. Public interest groups, environmental advocacy groups and government agencies will also find Wood's approach thought-provoking.
