Book Description
The fascinating biography that illuminates the man whose work changed modern culture
• Gives a complete biographical view of Campbell's life and a personal perspective of who he was through the voices of his friends and colleagues
• Written by two of Campbell's preeminent students with exclusive access to his notes and journals
Joseph Campbell forged an approach to the study of myth and legend that made ancient traditions and beliefs immediate, relevant, and universal. His teachings and literary works, including The Masks of God, have shown that beneath the apparent themes of world mythology lie patterns that reveal the ways in which we all may encounter the great mysteries of existence: birth, growth, soul development, and death. Biographers Stephen and Robin Larsen, students and friends of Campbell for more than 20 years, weave a rich tapestry of stories and insights that catalogue both his personal and public triumphs.
Customer Reviews:
Transparent to Transcendence.......2003-07-10
The fire in Joseph Campbell's mind burned through the dross of a mundane existence and forged a character who was ultimately "transparent to transcendence" (his own remarkable phrase).
The book is dense at times because of the Larsens' careful documentation and because Campbell's very life was so dense with accomplishment and discovery. I found the Larsens' scholarship to be impeccable and the coverage of a remarkable life thorough. Because they were friends of the Campbells, an air of authenticiy is added to their work. My only disappointment was their lack of reporting of his deeper response to his illness and impending death. I feel more information in this delicate area would have been appropriate because of the biographical nature of the work and because of Campbell's own personal spiritual belief system.
I highly recommend this volume to anyone who wishes to learn more about one of the most formidable intellectuals of the 20th century. Because the book is so well-written, entertaining, and well-documented, it will enliven the days of your reading...and well beyond!
Joseph Campbell: A Fire in the Mind.......2003-05-07
Since Joseph Campell was such a prolific writer of journals, letters, essays and books, this book was able to capture, in such detail, not only his life events but also the evolution of his studies and thoughts about myth, art, religion and the world. I originally checked this book out at the library but I am buying it as a reference guide because it touches on so many fascinating points about religion and the most prominent spiritual leaders in the last century.
an original thinker.......2002-07-26
After viewing his lectures on video and watching the interviews with Bill Moyers I became increasing curious about Joseph Campbell, the man, not just the scholar and how one could devote his life to his work.
This authorized biography does not disappoint. It is a wealth of information from personal journals, letters, interviews with friends and family, most generously provided by his widow, Jean Erdman Campbell.
Yes, it is a lengthy tome since it is chronicaling the life and works of one of this centuries most prolific writers and original thinkers, well worth the time it's taken to read it.
Joseph Campbell, the eldest of three, had progressive parents who recognized their childrens natural talents and provided the best education to ameliorate their gifts. As I read, I was impressed how from a young age, Joseph Campbell viewed his world and continued to pursue answers to questions, and in turn, enlighten others through his lectures and writings.
His relationship with friends, colleagues, mentors and his wife is tightly woven into this biography, he was grateful for all the support he received from his "fans." I was constantly surprised with whom he met along his life's path, John Steinbeck, Carl G. Jung to name a few.
I am now embarking on reading Jung, influenced by Joseph Campbells admiration of his works and contributions to the study of the psyche. Hoping to open a new way of thinking myself.

Meet a Matrix Meister.......2000-04-16
Agent Larsen and Agent Larsen produce a comprehensive database for tracking the network connections established by Matrix Meister, Joseph Campbell in upgrading the virtual reality of daily existence for current generations of citizen believers. Agents Larsen and Larsen provide a compelling and vivid account of Campbell's genius in reformatting the work of earlier master technicians such as Meisters Plato, Paul, Augustine and Eckhart, in maintaining viability of the First Principle of Matrix Management: that the self and its passions must be transcended for the attainment of ultimate bliss. In formulating this upgrade version of the First Principle, Larsen and Larsen carefully document the development of Campbell's ties with Robert Bly, John Cage, Maya Deren, Bob Dylan, Mircea Eliade, Jerry Garcia, Marija Gimbutas, Stanislav Grof, Joan Halifax, Jean Houston, Al Huang, Carl Jung, Sam Keen, Stanley Keleman, Jiddu Krishnamurti, George Lucas, Paul & Mary Mellon, Michael Murphy, Bill Moyers, Swami Nikhilananda, John Steinbeck and Alan Watts, along with institutions that include the Bollingen Foundation, Esalen, the Young President's Organization and the United States Information Service. A remarkable achievement, even Morpheus concedes, despite being largely facilitated, as Agents Larsen and Larsen record, by the estate of industrial/financial magnate Andrew Mellon. AI Central is honoring Agents Larsen and Larsen with benevolent termination. The forthcoming generation of Sentinels will be known as the Meister Campbell. A must read for all novice agents.
Embers for a Fire in Anyone's Mind.......2000-01-30
An excellent book. The contents of this book made for some of the most interesting reading I have ever done. This will be a treasured hardcover book on my shelves for the rest of my life. Campbell not only taught us during his life, but is stepping over the threshold of time to continue teaching us lessons on what life can hold for those who are willing to follow their Bliss. I have only felt this strongly about a book a dozen times in my life. As for availability, business has never had enough vision and foresight to make available what feeds ones soul. Have this book reprinted for yourself if you can't purchase it!
This book is not unavialable.......1999-10-28
You state that this book is out of stock. Boarders got it for me in three days.
a wonderful look into the rich life of a great philosopher.......1999-04-21
FROM THE BIG SUR AND ROBINSON JEFFERS TO THE MYSTERY WORLD OF JAMES JOYCE'S FINNIGAN'S WAKE, THE LARSENS TAKE US TO ALL THE PLACES IN MIND AND LOCATION THAT CAMPBELL FREQUENTED. HIS LONG-TIME CONNECTIONS TO GREAT NOVELISTS LIKE JOHN STEINBECK AND NEW THOUGHT THINKERS LIKE MICHAEL MURPHY OF THE ESALEN INSTITUTE REVEAL THE ECLETIC PANORAMA THAT WAS THIS GREAT, AND SOMETIMES UNDER-APPRECIATED, MAN'S PURVIEW.
IT IS VERY SAD THAT THE PUBLISHER NO LONGER BELIEVES THAT THERE IS AN AUDIENCE FOR THE DETAILS OF THIS WONDERFUL MAN'S LIFE.
Excellent account of Campbell's rich life........1998-05-08
Not one for biographies I nevertheless enjoyed this one tremendously. It is quite an intimate account of Campbell's life presented in an interesting format of his personal journal entries and recollections of others inbetween the Larsens' well written flow. Who could not marvel at this man's brilliant life? The only problem with this biography is that in light of its length it loses a bit of the focus on Campbell's vision near the last few decades of his life. The many anecdotes of friends he accumulated in the 70's and 80's are nice but I would've liked to have kept more with Campbell's journal entries (if he did indeed keep up with personal writings). The last several chapters show Campbell living his life in the parasitic throes of 'new-agers', and portray them (unintentionally) as enjoying his company for their own benefit to the point where he probably was unable to get much of his own work done. Of course, who could blame people for wanting to be near the man and hear his erudition? But I would like to know more about his personal thoughts in his last years. Joseph Campbell lived a truly enchanted life and will be the teacher for the next century in more ways than one.

Tiger, The Best Golfer In The World!.......2000-05-17
Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer in the world, (in my opinion anyway, I really don't care what other people think). I am the biggest beyond biggest fan of Tiger woods (just ask anyone, they all know!) Tiger Woods is more than a world class champion, he is the best, and I would give anything to meet him! I know you all probably hear this all of the time, but I am serious, he is my hero, I love him! Yeah, GO TIGER, YOUR THE MAN! Good luck, and love ya, Nikki

French Film Theory and Criticism: A History/Anthology, 1907-1939. Volume 2: 1929-1939 (French Film Theory & Criticism)
ASIN: 0415057299 |
Book Description
In French National Cinema Susan Hayward examines her subject through its primary artifact, the feature film, and discusses both popular cinema and the `avant-garde', and how each influences the other.
Where most writing on French cinema has concentrated on a particular auteur or `great' filmmaker, or on specific movements among filmmakers, Hayward offers a thorough contextualization of these directors and periods within their wider cultural and political frameworks.
The volume begins with a history of the cinema, charting its beginnings in the 1890s and the rise to power of the three major studios: Pathé, Gaumont and Eclair. She traces key movements in French cinema and the directors associated with them, including the avant-garde--Germaine Dulac, Marie and Jean Epstein; Poetic-Realist--Jean Renoir and Marcel Carne; New Wave--Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut; and today's postmodern cinema of Jean-Jacques Beineix, Luc Besson and Colinne Serreau.
French National Cinema fills in the gaps often left by other histories, and furthers a fuller understanding of France's cinematic legacy.

Book Description
Birth stories, Della Pollock tells us, "are everywhere and nowhere," permeating and haunting our everyday lives. In this remarkable volume Pollock explores the myriad ways in which men and women recount the ritual performance of giving birth.
Many of these stories, Pollock observes, rise out of the depths of terror, flirting with disaster only to end with a profound sense of relief at what medical discourse calls a "good outcome." Others represent pain, make counterclaims on reproductive technologies, and suggest complex associations between maternity, sexuality, and body politics in the contemporary United States. Pollock retells stories about some of the injustices that structure giving and telling birth----finding there a reckoning with the unknown and unknowable.
Focusing on the performances of birth stories, Pollock writes an intimate ethnography: an account of listening "body to body" to stories that press the borders of cultural critique with virtuosity, possibility, desire, and risk. She draws on cultural criticism, performance studies, and narrative theory to unpack this long-ignored practice. Most striking, however, are the stories presented here: unsanctioned, bold, fragmentary, and often furtive, they both unnerve and inspire even as they realize and resist cultural norms.

Love This Book.......2007-09-22
You will get a lot of information from this book. I love this book. I was so excited to receive the book. I tried some things just to see if the information given would be easy to follow. It is and I am going to become very knowledgeable in Illustrator CS2
this book was most helpful in getting me started.......2007-01-19
I rate this book at a 4 because when I got IDCS I had no knowledge of it and never considered desk top publishing. Not only did it get me going, but it help gave me a good overall understanding of working with a commercial printers, typography, and other concepts I had never heard of or considered. Using it I was able to do a personal project (multi-language calendar) from start to finish with good results.
It covers a lot of material.......2005-09-12
This book covers a lot of different aspects of the Illustrator program. The only thing I didn't like about it was the texture of the paper it was printed on.
Another great self-trainer.......2005-08-12
I like the 'Bible' series of technology books from Wiley, and I've got quite a collection of them at this point. I am currently updating my knowledge of Illustrator with this book, covering CS2. I can't cover every chapter, but let me summarize with a list:
* Great appendices - nice coverage of key commands and shortcuts, as well as the reference URLs for websites that I haven't even scratched the surface on yet.
* Good coverage of the Illustrator desktop and some of the new features as well - it always changes a bit, so the first part of the book was a good summary.
* Chapter 9, 'Working with Type' is great... I do copywriting, both with designers and with my own stuff, so this chapter was very useful to me.
* Chapter 16, on 3D objects and drawing, is fun. I'm still working on my skills here, but the coverage of the tools in Illustrator is great.
* Chapter 18, on printing with PostScript, is also a must for me. I submit so many printing jobs to various printers, that this helped me understand some of the limitations (and options) that I sometimes encounter.
Overall, no complaints with the book. I've come to expect a certain level of coverage from Wiley's Bible series, and this one makes the grade. If you are new to Illustrator and want JUST THE FACTS, I can recommend this new edition with confidence.

Contributed by a leading team of historians, each chapter in this volume in the Short Oxford History of France focuses on a key theme of the period, such as France's political culture and identity, rural economy and society, the Church, intellectual history, and France's relations with the outside world. Beginning in 900, the volume is able to trace the emergence of France as a country, and the people's sense of national identity. Encompassing every region of France and covering key events, such as the election of Hugh Capet as King in 987 and the Norman conquest of England in 1066, this volume provides a fully rounded and lively introduction to the history of France in the central middle ages.

Book Description
Preliminary Discourse to the Encyclopedia of Diderot expresses the hopes, dogmas, assumptions, and prejudices that have come to characterize the French Enlightenment. In this preface to the Encyclopedia, d'Alembert traces the history of intellectual progress from the Renaissance to 1751. Including a revision of Diderot's Prospectus and a list of contributors to the Encyclopedia, this edition, elegantly translated and introduced by Professor Richard Schwab, is one of the great works of the Enlightenment and an outstanding introduction to the philosophes.
Customer Reviews:
Who wouldn't want a book recommended by Friederich the Great.......2000-06-15
The preliminary discourses are a surprisingly entertaining description of D'Alembert's ideas about knowledge and learning. This introduction to the great Encyclopedia of Diderot is an important work of the Enlightenment in itself.
