Jackson's powerful writing.......2000-10-27
Many people throughout the world yearn for truth, explanation, and meaning in life. They are unwilling to settle for conventional wisdom or generalities; they must dig deeper. They are driven by inner voices leading them on journeys that will transform their thinking, beliefs, and lifestyles. Such people tend to have an impact on the world.
One such person is JT Ross Jackson, a successful businessman, a brilliant systems scientist, and a global visionary. In search of spiritual truth, he embarked on a number of experiences that challenged his perception of what is possible. He attended workshops with renowned teachers. In search of more understanding, he took a trip to India where he had a week-long "awakening." He recorded his experiences in detail in a journal that evolved into his new book, THE KALI YUGA ODYSSEY: A Spiritual Journey (Robert D. Reed Publishers. ISBN1-885003-44-7. October 2000).
"Kali Yuga" is an ancient Vedic term meaning "the age of darkness." It is defined as "an age where spiritualism is deficient and materialism rules." According to the teachings, each age comes to an end eventually, giving way to a new age.
Jackson continued to seek experiences with various figures who greatly influenced his thinking. He had a growing concern for the degradation of the environment. This concern culminated the establishment of Gaia Trust, a self-financing fund based on income earned from Gaia Corporation, a currency fund manager founded by Jackson as well.
Gaia Trust encourages the establishment of ecovillages that are small, sustainable communities where social, ecological, and spiritual aspects are integrated into a holistic lifestyle. This is also the subject of another new book by Jackson called, AND WE ARE DOING IT! Building the Ecovillage Future (Robert D. Reed Publishers. ISBN 1-885003-45-5. $9.95. September 2000).
According to Dr. Rashmi Mayur, Director of the International Institute for a Sustainable Future, "In sharing his discoveries, Jackson describes the role and destiny of humans, and each of our roles in healing an anguished earth." The author's candid description of his experiences with different masters, along with his knowledge of mythology, symbology, and philosophy, make this book an important contribution in the areas of self-help, spiritual development, and metaphysics.
Book Description
Contrary to rumors on campus and in the local press, Cynthia Pemberton did not set out in 1992 to destroy the long-honored football team of Linfield College, a small liberal arts school in Oregon. Instead, the Assistant Athletic Director for Women's Sports wanted to make athletic opportunities equally available to both women and men-simply to make the college comply with the law. Her six-year crusade for full implementation of Title IX made headlines across the nation. Here is Pemberton's autobiographical account of what would become the ordeal of her life.
When Pemberton first arrived at Linfield in 1989, she accepted the logic that the more lucrative men's sports earned male players preferential treatment. Men's teams were outfitted at the college's expense, but Pemberton began noticing that the women often had to buy their own equipment and shape their practice and facility use schedules around the men's sports. Also, scant resources were available for the recruiting and coaching of women athletes. It became clear that their success would always be limited unless policies changed.
The author recounts her steps in prodding Linfield to gender awareness and then to justice. For six years, Pemberton endured harassment from her supervisor, attempts to derail her professional development, and smear campaigns in local newspapers, while her supporters on campus faced intimidation. She had come to the brink of financial ruin and psychological exhaustion by the time her lawsuit against the college was settled.
The struggle for gender equity in sport is far from over, but Pemberton leaves a legacy for women athletes, their coaches, and school administrators. Her book conveys bold determination and is rich with insights into the workings of the legal system and academic bureaucracy. It will enlighten anyone who pursues educational and social change -- and teach a new generation of women not to take their rights for granted.

Greate collection of Patterns.......2006-11-06
Basically, this most valuable thing in this book is the extensive collection of patterns that anyone can use to create any website.
Follow this patterns guidelines and you will have an useful and usable website.
It's a "must" in any web designer's bookshelf.
Review.......2005-10-23
The first part of the book is very valuable. The patterns described are on average rather shallow and don't touch on the real issues. For the 'novice' however this is a very relevant book to read. I do advice to deepen understanding by looking at actual websites to see how leaders have implemented the different patterns. Much more to learn there.
Very handy reference book and checklist.......2005-10-05
While there are many books on the market that discuss patterns related to programming, architectural elements, etc., this is the first book I've seen that focuses on web patterns at the user interface level. The book is essentially an indexed, cross-referenced, best practices guide to building web pages that attract and keep customers. Or at least keep you from pissing them off. The authors have collected and summarized a great deal of HCI research (all listed in the resources section of the appendix) on web usability, so none of this stuff is made up--it's all based on time-proven, tested, and verified data about how people actually use the Internet (e.g., see Amazon, Yahoo!, Google, et. al.). A few of the patterns are no longer considered best practices, due to evolving standards (e.g., CSS) and increasing browser standards support. This is a very handy reference book, especially for an in-depth UI checklist.
Design of Sites: Patterns, Principles...Review.......2005-08-26
I purchased the book while participating in the remodeling of a client website. The book is formatted in such a way that you can review only sections that relate to your project or read for overall background on web design. Our team found it to be a useful tool.
A reference book about web design to keep close to you.......2005-02-03
Full of practical design guidelines, this book will help me and my customers to focus on the right site features and to build them right. As stated by the authors, this book is "opened". So I decided to contribute by suggesting a new online text editor pattern and an improvement to the grid pattern by displaying contextual content over the HTML page using an invisible-visible DIV tag. I hope a second version of this book will be published soon with all the comments and new patterns sent to the authors.
Book Description
America's greatest historians examine thirty-one uncelebrated days that changed the course of history There are moments in American history when something old ends and something new begins. These are the days of destiny. We asked some of the most respected (and best-selling) historians of our time to choose specific days on which American history turned. Their responses make up the month's worth of essays included in this volume. Some chose wars and battles, politics and presidents; others found answers in less well-known areas of historical study: the Great Awakening of the 1740s, the Indian Wars of the 1870s, the plight of working women at the turn of the twentieth century, the countercultural efflorescence of the late 1960s. In Days of Destiny: Crossroads in American History, the Society of American Historians brings you thirty-one engaging narratives, each illuminating with crisp prose and unparalleled scholarship an event that profoundly shaped the nation and world in which we live in. From King Philip's 1675 parley with white colonial officials to the 1973 research conference at which the biotechnology revolution was announced, these vignettes will transport you to places and introduce you to people who have made a continuing difference in the history of America.

Days of Destiny: Crossroads in American History.......2002-10-15
Days of Destiny: Crossroads in American History edited by James M. McPherson and Alan Brinkley is a book that brings thirty-one of todays best-selling and most respected historians together into a project that is engaging with unparalleled scholarship, as the question that is asked are there moments in American History when something old ends and something new begins. This book takes us from King Philip's 1675 parley with white colonial officials to the 1973 research conference at which the biotechnology revolution was announced.
This is a book that will court your mind with its information and insight, making a very fascinating read about the turbulent course of American History. As some of the historian chose wars, presidents, battles and politics, others chose areas, of less well-known areas of study making a well-rounded book with crisp prose and readability that will keep your interest.

Finally, the whole, uplifting and extraordinary story can be be told: $20 Million in Captain Kidd's treasure on an island off the coast of Vietnam; an eighteen-year-old photojournalist from California, haunted by the Vietnam War. Travel with Frederick "Cork" Graham in The Bamboo Chest from San Francisco to Thailand and a Socialist Republic of Vietnam political prison on an amazingly healing adventure that will capture the world's imagination for years!
Customer Reviews:
Great Story and Great Insight.......2006-04-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this true account of Cork Graham and his experiences in the Far East. It amazed me that an 18-year old could be so focused on what he wanted to do with his life. And it was also amazing what he experienced and his reactions to his experiences. I recommend this book for reading for all.
Wicked sharp, powerful imagery and wisdom........2006-03-28
Mr. Graham bares his soul in this powerful true story. I remember seeing this kid on 'good morning America' after he came back from 11 months in a Vietnamese prison. First American held as a political prisoner after the end of the Vietnam war. The amount of recently de-classified information in this book blew me away. Anyone who's ever been in the wrong place at the wrong time should read this book before they whine about it.
Mr. Graham pulls no punches and is not politically correct, thank God. Few people write this raw, because few people can handle the truth anymore. I'm waiting desperately for the next book in his trilogy. I took a HARD look at a lot of things in my life that I took for granted before reading this. BUY THIS BOOK !!!!!!!!
Growing Up The Hard Way........2006-02-27
Very good book. Saw it was reviewer rated very high so I bought it.
He seemed not to have known the advantage of learning about life
second hand instead of first hand. I read books, biographies of
great men and leaned from their experiences. Used their road maps
to get to my goal. Learned from their mistakes. He did it first hand but he grew up fast. He used some old established methods of
meditation, physical conditioning, and reflecting on his situation.
Some of the philosophical quotes are helpful for getting through life in general. His use of auto-suggestion or self hyponosis is also a method I used most of my life starting at about 8 years of age. Some of the side comments about Viet Nam, the French, and Agent Orange are but a few sentences long but very enlightening.
More then an adventure!.......2005-10-20
*Something* draws us to certain places and certain activities.
Inside our heads, no one really knows why.
In this book, Graham describes his compelling adventure in Southeast Asia, just weeks after completing high school, as he sought out a photo-journalism career.
At 18, he somehow needed to go to Vietnam when it was all but closed to Americans. The power of his mind got him there against all odds.
When he needs to leave Vietnam, will the power of his mind be enough to get him out of the prison he landed in for being American?
A thrilling read, with action, intrigue, drama, emotion, and insights into the power of his mind and yours....you will stay on the edge of your seat until the last page.
An amazing story of strength and self-determination.......2005-10-18
I purchased one book from Amazon and then another from the author's website so that I could get a personally signed copy, it's that good! I am not attracted to books about Vietnam, but after this book was recommended to me by a friend who served there in the military and later as a civilian contractor, I couldn't put it down. The book was finished in two days! For an eighteen year old, who was barely out of high school, to survive this type of experience without any prior military training makes the story almost incredible. He even confronted his case of post-traumatic stress received while earlier living in Saigon during the war. There's a movie here. I'm going to get more for friends and children of friends returning from Iraq.

So helpful we once owned an upstairs and downstairs copy.......2002-01-29
What is the best way to learn and be secure in your learning -- work a problem through with expert guidance. This book provides clear advice about what statistics to choose for what problem and then provides small data sets. You can confirm your capability by working the problem step-by-step with the authors -- that includes understanding the meaning of your result and drawing an appropriate conclusion. Students love it. Me, too.
A true friend.......2000-06-09
I also used the first edition of this book. Several copies of it in fact. The first two editions were true handbooks that were never out of reach from my desk (unless "borrowed") for over thirty years. I cannot recommend this book too highly to anyone who will be using statistics. May it be as true a friend to you as it was to me.
(But did the price have to increase so drasticly?)
A fabulous cookbook.......1999-04-12
I cut my teeth in statistics with the first edition of this book in 1968, back before we had computer programs to do our statistics for us. And I have kept the second edition on my shelf since 1977. The book leads the reader step by step through the hand calculations for all the basic statistics, and for some relatively obscure ones as well (such as tests of the difference between two correlations or between two proportions). These days, students of statistics go right to their keyboards, and the statistics come out a millisecond or two later. But if you want your students to see how these things are actually calculated, there is no better reference than this.

Cookbook approach to statistics for novices/out of practice........1998-02-19
Had orginally purchased in edition in 1974; carried it with me for 24 years and then lost track of it. Remembered how good it had served me. One of few places I could find a point-biserial correlation. Step-by-step approach extremely helpful. Examples useful.
