              Book Description

Robert Mitchum's "bad boy" reputation that colors his public profile has been both earned and undeserved. Jerry Roberts discusses the actor's career, his cult status, his under-appreciated talent, his forgotten films, and his nonchalance. This book catalogues previously published information on Mitchum, taking a full measure of the actor and describing the events that occasionally brought him more notoriety than his movies. The book's biographical essay and annotated filmography scrutinize his performing style. Many yarns about Mitchum have been repeated and modified into legend. But much of "the Mitchum myth" has been just that: myth. The final word here on various rumors and stories comes from the confirmations, clarifications and corrections made by Robert Mitchum during an interview with the author and in correspondence with several members of the Mitchum family. As with the other Bio-Bibliographies in the Performing Arts, this biographical essay is followed by a chronology, annotated filmography, television, stage, recording and writing credits, list of awards, annotated bibliography listing 1,300 entries and a comprehensive index.

                  Book Description

The Virtual Embodied is intended to inform and provoke. It juxtaposes cutting-edge theories, polemics, and creative practices to uncover ethical, aesthetic and ecological implications of why, how and in particular where, human actions, observations and insights take place. It refuses simply to hold a euphoric view of technology yet equally resists the apocalyptic scorn which surrounds the new. The contributors use a range of interdisciplinary strategies to point to a re-worked aesthetic for embodying knowledge and explore such areas as colonialism and the internet, the virtual unconscious in electronic systems, theatre as a virtual space, 'information' and the capitalist society, ecstatic bodies and the rave scene, desire and the 'virtual comfort' zone. In The Virtual Embodied many of the authors, artists, performers and designers apply their interdisciplinary passions to questions of embodied knowledge and virtual space.

                        Book Description

GoLive CS is more than just a simple Web authoring tool: As part of Adobe's new Creative Suite (which includes Photoshop and Acrobat), it's a key component of an overall Web workflow that lets you work seamlessly among all of your graphics applications to create spectacular Web sites. This info-packed guide lets users get right down to doing by focusing on just the GoLive features they're mostly like to use and showcasing each in a stand-alone tip--complete with a relevant hint or two and a graphic example. In this fashion, you learn as you go, exploring the program in a way that makes sense to you. Before you know it, you'll be importing layered Photoshop files into GoLive, creating PDF files from within the GoLive environment, and using the visual layout grid and Cascading Style Sheets to turn out fluid, beautiful Web pages. Also covered are all of GoLive CS' new features: better coding tools, on-the-fly style rendering, and more.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Now i want all my books to be like this.......2005-05-09

One of the best books on software that i ever bought. I've been working with GoLive for quite a while now and just can't believe how many useful things i didn't know about it yet. So many shortcuts that enhance productivity, so many features that i paid too little attention to.
Because of the way it's written - 200 tips, most of them on 1 or 2 pages - it's easy to pick it up at any time, read a minute, learn something valuable and put it down again. And you're almost sure to learn something new with every tip.

4 out of 5 stars good companion to a standard GoLive text.......2004-11-25

Adobe offers GoLive as a powerful tool to build pages in a website. It is complicated enough that the authors of this book present 200 tips, to perform common and useful tasks.

The contents pages show a titular summary of the tips. Given that GoLive is from Adobe, it's no surprise to see an emphasis on the visual presentation of the pages. Typical is a tip about writing links in PDF documents, or another tip about converting an HTML file, and any associated referenced images, into a single PDF document. Of course, there are also several tips involving Adobe's flagship Photoshop.

Overall, the tips seem straightforward to understand and do. This appears to have been a deliberate choice by the authors. The book is most useful if you already have the basics of GoLive. A good companion to a standard text on GoLive.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All GoLive Users.......2004-11-09

I have been using GoLive since the Cyberstudio days, and this book STILL florred me on how much useful information it contained. Everything from the "Well duh! I can't believe I didn't know that" to the "WOW" tips are in here.

                        Simple. Consolidated. Useful.

5 out of 5 stars GoLive CS Tips & Tricks.......2004-10-26

This book is a great catalyst for experienced as well as new GoLive users. It's great way to learn all those little hidden, new or forgotten goodies in GoLive, whether you want to know how to be a more efficient GoLive user or want to know what you've been missing and don't have the time to learn. This book is a quick, enjoyable, easy read. I'm already looking forward to a "More Tips & Tricks!" book, but it's hard to imagine they've missed any with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, A GoLive Book that Shines!.......2004-09-12

I recently met the Author Adam Pratt at Mac Designers Conference this year in Chicago and Adam introduced me to GoLive CS, I was hooked within 20 minutes. Reading this book is like speaking to Adam but instead of 20 minutes, it feels like a 6-8 hour training. The book is simple and effective for the beginner and full of tips and tricks for the intermediate user already using GoLive. It covers the basics from setting up the site to advanced features like creating cool Quicktime slideshows with GoLive's impressive QuickTime editor. The book is filled with great resources such as hidden shortcuts (for Mac & PC), detailed descriptions of each object and there's even a resource listing sites that are full of GoLive Tutorials.

Being a Senior Web Developer and College Instructor, I highly recommend this book and give it 5 stars.

This meaty, scholarly collection of essays by gifted historian Niall Ferguson tackles the controversial topic of counterfactual questions: What if Hitler had invaded Britain in WWII? What if JFK had survived his assassination? What if there had been no Gorbachev to usher in the collapse of Communism? What if there had been no American Revolution? Ferguson points out that while questions such as these are a vital part of how we learn as individuals ("What if I had observed the speed limit, or refused that last drink?"), there remains a great deal of resistance--even hostility--to such musings among professional historians. "[I]n the dismissive phrase of E.H. Carr, 'counterfactual' history is a mere 'parlour game,' a 'red herring.'" E.P. Thompson is less charitable, calling counterfactual histories "'Geschichtswissenschlopff', unhistorical shit."

But Ferguson and his distinguished collaborators (many of whom are also Oxford fellows) lodge some convincing counterfactuals of their own to counter this arguably blinkered notion, this "idea that events are in some way preprogrammed, so that what was, had to be." In addition to the what-ifs above, Ferguson and his comrades tackle eight questions in all, including "What if Charles I had avoided the Civil War?", "What if Home Rule had been enacted [in Ireland] in 1912?", and "What if Britain had 'stood aside' in August 1914?" Virtual History makes for a stimulating and intellectually rigorous trip, with Ferguson's own delightful afterword as the collection's crowning jewel, a brilliant--and often bitingly clever--timeline tying together all the threads from 1646 to 1996. --Paul Hughes

                        Book Description

Speculative history at its best, in which a talented team of historians, led by Niall Ferguson, explore what might have happened if nine momentous events had turned out differently.

What if there had been no American War of Independence? What if Hitler had invaded Britain? What if Kennedy had lived? What if Russia had won the Cold War? Niall Ferguson, author of the highly acclaimed The Pity of War, leads the charge in this historically rigorous series of separate voyages into "imaginary time" and provides far-reaching answers to these intriguing questions.

Ferguson's brilliant 90-page introduction doubles as a manifesto on the methodology of counter-factual history. His equally masterful afterword traces the likely historical ripples that would have proceeded from the maintenance of Stuart rule in England. This breathtaking narrative gives us a convincing, detailed "alternative history" of the West-from the accession of "James III" in 1701, to a Nazi-occupied England, to a U.S. Prime Minister Kennedy who lives to complete his term.

If someone had to do a book like this it is good that it was Niall Ferguson, one of the most thoughtful and interesting of all modern historians. The human mind has a right to play, and this kind of thought is , as I feel it, more in the realm of play than of real history.
'History' is after all 'what has happened', and while 'what might of happened' can possibly illuminate what has happened, my sense is that 'what has happened' is so often problematic and questionable as to provide historians enough work with that.
This said I will admit that there is one 'counterfactual of history' that has always fascinated me. It is the question of what would have happened had the Jewish gangsters who thought to do so assassinated Hitler. Would that have meant the Shoah and World War II would never have taken place?
The question taunts and disturbs me, and I do not know how to deal with it as I do not know how really to deal with any of the 'counterfactual scenarios'.
Again the exploration of what would have happened had Britain desisted from entering the first World War, or had the Germans invaded Britain, or had the Japanese never attacked Pearl Harbor , or ( One can raise a counterfactual to every possible happening) seems to me more mindgame ( even if well researched) than true historical study.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Seminal Philosophical Work on History in 20 Years!.......2005-12-18

All students and scholars of history should not consider themselves properly versed in the philosophy of history until they have read through this book's introduction a few times!

5 out of 5 stars Counter knee jerk negativity - or why I'm buying this book.......2003-09-07

Clearly the negative reviews of this book indicate that it's message is going to be difficult, mind ripping and beyond the capability of history addicts. Just as books by David Irving are extremely difficult to even consider, because they tend to go against the momentum of some seventy years of non-stop agiprop by the gereontocrat historians who like Gilbert and Schlesinger just spout the party line of the moment, and that party line that is best suited to career advancement.

I am going to read this and find that kernel of brilliance I already know is in there. "It is History that travels straight from history maker to document, and from the archives to the writer and his book, without political input and free of academic prejudice, it is History that cannot be bought, and cannot be bought off."

                        Wish me luck.

                        4 out of 5 stars Worth reading.......2003-01-23

"Virtual History: Alternatives and Counterfactuals" is a collection of thought-provoking essays, edited by historian Niall Ferguson, that explore a number of 'what if?' scenarios such as:

*What if Charles I had avoided the civil war?
*What if there had been no American Revolution?
*What if Britain had stood aside in August 1914?
*What if Germany had invaded Britain in May 1940?
*What if communism had not collapsed?

As previous reviewers have noted, this book is fairly Anglo-centric; however, that should not be surprising given that a majority of the contributors are from Britain and in particular from the Oxbridge universities.

The part I enjoyed the most was the conclusion in which Ferguson brings together all the essays and constructs an alternate history of the world over the last three hundred years. Other strong essays were the ones dealing with World Wars I and II.

Two caveats for the potential reader: first, the introduction was extremely long and dry - basically a history of the study of history, and secondly, a general knowledge of the events discussed in the book would be a great advantage.

Overall though, "Virtual History" is a very interesting read and well-worth the effort.

1 out of 5 stars This is a boring book.......2002-11-01

Don't waste your time or money on this book - unless you like to read incredibly dull history. It would turn anyone off history. I would give it zero stars if I could. If you are looking for something along the lines of "What-If" or Harry Turtledove - forget it. The authors spend so much time delivering the most trivial facts that they never get down to what might have happened. B-O-R-I-N-G!

Within half a century, three European empires fell to American movements for independence. In this innovative and sophisticated account of comparative history, Lester D. Langley considers the revolutions in the American colonies, Saint Domingue (later Haiti), and the "Iberoamerican" independence movements in South America. He compares class leadership, racial factors, and the relative violence of each movement. His study alters the typical framework for analyzing American independence as he considers revolution from a dynamic or systemic perspective. Eschewing questions of causation such as "Why did the revolutions occur?" or "What did they achieve?" he explores instead the importance of place and location as well as what the revolts brought in terms of industrialization, militarization, and material progress. Professor Langley's arguments are based in an intriguing understanding of chaos theory, which he applies to the interpretation of historical experience in order to draw out the roles of probability and randomness as constraints on and conditions for the various revolutionary movements.

                              Book Description

In this masterly work, Lester D. Langley compares political and social histories of three revolutions in the Americas: the American Revolution in 1776, the 1791 slave revolt in the French colony that became Haiti, and the prolonged Spanish American struggle for independence. Langley explores the characteristics that distinguished each upheaval, and he shows how the legacies of the revolutionary age affect virtually every modern political issue.

As Chaos explained the science of disorder, Nexus reveals the new science of connection and the odd logic of six degrees of separation.

"If you ever wanted to know how many links connect you and the Pope, or why when the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank sneezes the global economy catches cold, read this book," writes John L. Casti (Santa Fe Institute). This "cogent and engaging" (Nature) work presents the fundamental principles of the emerging field of "small-worlds" theory—the idea that a hidden pattern is the key to how networks interact and exchange information, whether that network is the information highway or the firing of neurons in the brain. Mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists, and social scientists are working to decipher this complex organizational system, for it may yield a blueprint of dynamic interactions within our physical as well as social worlds.

Highlighting groundbreaking research behind network theory, "Mark Buchanan's graceful, lucid, nontechnical and entertaining prose" (Mark Granovetter) documents the mounting support among various disciplines for the small-worlds idea and demonstrates its practical applications to diverse problems—from the volatile global economy or the Human Genome Project to the spread of infectious disease or ecological damage. Nexus is an exciting introduction to the hidden geometry that weaves our lives so inextricably together.

                                    4 out of 5 stars A new science.......2007-07-10

The 20th century witnessed the birth of several entirely new branches of science. Some of the more popular include relativity, nuclear physics, genetics, and solid state science. But there is one field that connects them all, the science of networks, whether it is networks of humans in a city, animals in an environment, water molecules in a lake or computers on the web. This book provides a ground-up introduction to networks, a history of the ideas, and how they are manifested in everything we do. The author explains how various phenomena are explained using networks, such as the spread of diseases, the movement of stock prices, and of course, business networking. This book is just one of a whole wave of books published in the past 20 years on this subject; but is better than most in that it approaches the topic on scientific principles. I recommend this book.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A Very Satisfying Read.......2007-03-18

This book is an terrific introduction to the details and applications of networks. Having only a superficial notion of what networks were about beforehand, I could hardly put it down. It was mind expanding, and will surely broaden your thinking!

5 out of 5 stars Networks - a wonderful way to view our worlds both big and small........2006-12-05

Mark Buchanan gets 5 stars for so cogently introducing us to different facets of Network Theory and showing how an understanding of how things link together can greatly help us in seeing how our highly connected world operates.

Buchanan doesn't just talk in theoretical terms: he shows us clear examples such as the congestion of the US airways system - so efficient for so many decades, but now congested and prone to delays once some of the superhubs get congested. Or how about the collapse of the North Atlantic fishing industry - (which Canadian authorities laughably blamed on seals - were they serious?) due to a whole web of factors.

This book is illuminating and helps the reader view our social and natural worlds in fresh light. I'd heartily recommend this to the lay-reader who loves popular science (this is a nice extension from Tipping Point or the Wisdom of Crowds for example) or those interested in the way society functions. I also recommend a close cousin to this book: Six Degrees: The Science of a Connected Age by Duncan J. Watts which is equally well written but from the entertaining and quite modest point of view of one of the leading thinkers in this fascinating area.

1 out of 5 stars Empty and Unfocused.......2006-10-27

I got the feeling that the author couldnt find enough material to write a full book so he decided to distort the idea of "small worlds" to include everything from the internet, to economics, to biology, to disease, and beyond. Theres no real focus, its just a bunch of mishmosh subject matter bundled together under the vague category "small worlds." Theres no real substance to this book at all. It jumps around topic to topic with no depth nor acknowledgment to the uniqueness between subjects that result in the outcome they produce except only "hey doesnt this look like a small world pattern just like the all the rest?" The author reminds me of those crazy people who claim to see the number 12 or 22 in everything they come across. Go to a bookstore and look through this book yourself if you can. If you've read Gladwells Tipping Point, this book is no where near as insightful.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2006-08-08

The book examines the connection patterns of various networks, although it mostly focuses on the social aspect. The central idea is that you have a bunch of nodes (which can be people, Web sites, airports etc) and you want to connect them in such a way that you can get from anywhere to anywhere reasonably fast but you require very short routes for nodes that are close by some measure. So how do you do it?

The book shows you that neither the random connections between nodes nor the connect everyone with its closest neighbours (mesh) networks will perform too well. Then it proposes a connection scheme that works and what it calls a "small-world network". Then it shows examples where the analysis of networks formed by self-organisation shows that they indeed shape themselves into that small-world scheme.

It is very easy to read but it lacks any maths as well as a deeper explanation of the subject. It is a very good apetiser but you need to look around if you want information about the subject with some depth. On the plus side, it shows the applicability of the theory on many practical subjects, from the way the Internet organises itself through why the rich get richer to the spreading of infectious diseases. There are some repetitive bits that come up again and again, but it is bearable. While the book demonstrates through numerous examples that self-organised efficient networks (let them be social, economical, biological or physical) show this small-world characteristics, it doesn't try to explain why or how a network would evolve into that particular connection pattern.

All in all, a nice introduction to the subject of self-organising networks that will probably pique your curiosity enough to look for books with more detailed descriptions.
