    Book Description

This is the story of how a kid born during the Great Depression in Quicksand, Kentucky, became, in his day, the youngest college president in America, and of how he learned to lead. But this is not really a story about that kid, but rather about his four extraordinary teachers. The story begins in 1957 when Wireman meets the master of basketball, Adolph Rupp, who launches Wireman's leadership odyssey. The journey continues for more than forty years with three other mentors: Jack Eckerd, the king of retail; Bill Lee, the world's nuclear engineer; and Hugh McColl, America's premier banker. Here, Wireman shows us how his four "big guys" excelled and inspired others around them to succeed as well.

4 out of 5 stars If football is about enjoyment, the FA got it wrong!.......1998-12-09

If you never believed that 90's football was about enjoyment of the masses and had a sneeking suspecion that it had more to do with business then this is the book for you! It neatly dismisses all those long forgotten myths that football is for the fans and replaces it with the notion that football is about the business ethos. It takes a look at power, control and the men in grey suites who are determined to take the game away from the true fans and place it in the hands of the only people who can afford the ticket prices! It also serves the excellent perpous of confirming the fans view of their identity and where it comes from. This will make all football fans realise that you don't have to be a Nick Hornby to care . . . but it helps! If you are one of the few who still care and want to know a bit more about how they are dirtying the beautiful game, get a copy now!

              Book Description

Those of you who run networks on Windows 2000 know the benefits of using Active Directory for managing user information and permissions. You also know what a bear it can be. The newer version included with Windows Server 2003 has over 100 new and updated features to simplify deployment, but once it's in place many system administrators still find Active Directory challenging. If you're among those looking for practical hands-on support, help is here with our new Active Directory Cookbook for Windows Server 2003 & Windows 2000, a unique problem-solving guide that offers quick answers for both versions of the directory. The book contains hundreds of step-by-step solutions for both common and uncommon problems that you might encounter with Active Directory on a daily basis--including recipes to deal with the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), multi-master replication, Domain Name System (DNS), Group Policy, the Active Directory Schema, and many other features. Author Robbie Allen, a Senior Systems Architect at Cisco Systems and co-author of our Active Directory tutorial, based this collection of troubleshooting recipes on his own experience, along with input from Windows administrators throughout the industry. Each recipe includes a discussion to explain how and why the solution works, so you can adapt the problem-solving techniques to similar situations. If your company is considering an upgrade from Windows NT or 2000 to Windows Server 2003, the Active Directory Cookbook for Windows Server 2003 & Windows 2000 will help reduce the time and trouble it takes to configure and deploy Active Directory for your network. This Cookbook is also a perfect companion to Active Directory, the tutorial that experts hail as the best source for understanding Microsoft's network directory service. While Active Directory provides the big picture, Active Directory Cookbook for Windows Server 2003 & Windows 2000 gives you the quick solutions you need to cope with day-to-day dilemmas. Together, these books supply the knowledge and tools so you can get the most out of Active Directory to manage users, groups, computers, domains, organizational units, and security policies on your network.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!.......2007-07-26

I am so glad that this book was recommended to me by a guy I took a class on scripting from. I use this book everyday (almost). I even took it on vacation with me for light reading.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book! .......2007-03-09

Hard to say in words to adequately describe how much I like this book. I highly recommend to anyone who works with AD.

5 out of 5 stars a must have resource for any Windows Sys Admin.......2006-12-01

I highly recommend this book. I have used it frequently in the past 15 months. It offers solutions/ways to approach various tasks one might want to "automate" within an AD implementation.

What I really like is how the authors tried to provide multiple choices in how to do accomplish a task. Typically it's thru some form of scripting ro use of visual basic/.net, or the use of WMI/ADSI queries.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book but get the new edition.......2006-07-21

This Cookbook is the best selling of the Active Directory books. But you should know that there is a new Second Edition simply called Active Directory Cookbook that was revised by Joe Richards, the MVP and it has a lot of good stuff on topics like ADAM and updates for SP2. So get that.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2005-10-20

This book is a great resource covering a wide variety of interactions with Active Directory. Whether you are new or experienced with AD, this book is an invaluable tool.

We're a software engineering company, and I maintain our internal servers (6-7 servers) as well as provide customer support on our products. A lot of that involves asking for information from the customer - and this book helps in putting together scripts that I can send out that will send back information to us that avoids us asking to exchange 5 emails to get the same result. Anything that saves my time - and our customers time - is worthy of purchasing. Well done, well organised book - and the author returns emails!

This book has a sound foundation for managing a windows 2003 server. The chapters are logically organized. I used some of the examples in the book to migrate some file shares in my network from unix to windows, the book was there for the rescue (the fact that the author has a solid windows/unix experience makes this book even more attractive). The solutions in this book include windows scripting, an area that is seldom talked about in windows literature. If you are serious about managing a windows 2003 server competently then you want to have this book in your arsenal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Admins.......2005-12-11

This book is not one for beginners who don't know what they are doing and are looking for detailed explanations of topics. This is made purely for the admin who needs to get a job done, and quickly, and knows already what they are trying to accomplish. I really appreacieate all the scripting examples and also how Rob puts in some great building blocks for scripting (like how to redirect your output to an excel file rather than just the usual Wscript.Echo output that you can redirect to a text file or to stdout). Great Job Robbie!!

              Book Description

Ask network administrators what their most critical computer application is, and most will say "email" without a moment's hesitation. If you run a network powered by Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange occupies much of your time. According to Microsoft, 110 million Exchange seats have been deployed, but 60% of you are still running Exchange 5.5. That's a problem, because the difference between version 5.5 and the more efficient Exchange 2000 and Exchange Server 2003 is profound. Don't fret. Exchange Server Cookbook offers you a comprehensive how-to guide to these newer versions of Exchange. You'll find quick solutions for the most common tasks you need to perform--everything from installation and maintenance to configuration and optimization, with proven recipes for the most useful tools and utilities. The book also has solutions to some uncommon tasks (that you may not know are possible) and advanced procedures that aren't part of day-to-day operations. These include tasks for critical situations, such as using a recovery storage group. Our reliable desktop reference even shows you how to write scripts for Exchange management and deployment tasks. That's right. While not every Exchange job can be scripted, many can, and we provide lots of working VBScript examples for accomplishing particular goals. Whatever your particular need, you'll find it quickly, because chapters in this Cookbook are laid out by recipe, with cross references to other pertinent solutions in the book. With this guide, you'll learn: For every question you have about Exchange 2000 or Exchange Server 2003, our Cookbook has the answer--one that you can find and implement without a moment's hesitation.

I find this a great resource when you need to administer Exchange, especially for 5.5 to 2003 admins. Everything is well written, with examples given using the GUI, command prompt and scripting.

As a recent 5.5 to 2003 admin, it's very handy for those situations where you know 2003 can do it, but haven't memorized how. Overall, a very good cookbook for your server kitchen.

It is not easy to judiciously cover successive editions of any given software in a single book, but I must say that the efforts of the authors of this book are commendable. Any system administrator who shares his time working with both Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003 would find this book indispensable. Its contents prove that getting to understand new versions of mission-critical technologies do not always mean starting from scratch.
Whether it entails a fresh installation or an upgrading path, this book shed comprehensive light on each topic. All the important issues regarding Routing and SMTP controlling, as well as Outlook, Outlook Web Access, POP3, and IMAP4 management and security were nicely explored. In fact, nowhere have I seen the concepts of Mail Transport and System Monitoring better summarized than in this book. The same could be said of Managing and Controlling folders, Backing-up, Replication, as well as Restoration of data (on the same or on different servers).
This book's coverage of Active Directory Integration, along with its associated controls and monitoring is without blemish. It is simply emphatic. Each chapter presented a set of solutions, which were complemented by a series of well-grounded analyses. They are extensively cross-referenced too.
However, the downside of this kind of book is that the authors' efforts to covered two successive editions (of the Exchange Server) compelled them to concentrate more on only the features that are common to both editions. Still, it remains a valuable desk manual for any e-mail-oriented system administrator.

5 out of 5 stars Handy set of recipes for Exchange administrators.......2005-09-30

The cookbook style really works for a topic like Exchange server maintenance. The style defines a set of recipes where each recipe covers a single question; e.g. Rehoming Public Folders. Then it discusses the problem, gives a solution, and then discusses how the solution actually works. It gives you insight into the workings of Exchange within a practical framework.

The writing is good. It's a little stiff, but you would expect that from this type of format.

4 out of 5 stars try the command line or scripting?.......2005-08-06

Many useful ideas about running your Exchange Server. Some of which presuppose a reasonable facility in writing VBScript. Other recipes [I guess that's the preferred term] assume you have an Active Directory server on your network, and show how to integrate your Exchange Server with it.

The usage of command lines and of writing scripts may be the best way for you to learn this material. While the GUI methods are the easiest, the other approaches steer you towards actual programming of the Server, and of a deeper understanding.

                            Book Description

A single theme is pursued in this book - the trade between peoples of differing cultures through world history. Extending from the ancient world to the coming of the commercial revolution, Professor Curtin’s discussion encompasses a broad and diverse group of trading relationships. Drawing on insights from economic history and anthropology, Professor Curtin has attempted to move beyond a Europe-centred view of history, to one that can help us understand the entire range of societies in the human past. Examples have been chosen that illustrate the greatest variety of trading relationships between cultures. The opening chapters look at Africa, while subsequent chapters treat the ancient world, the Mediterranean trade with China, the Asian trade in the east, and European entry into the trade with maritime Asia, the Armenian trade carriers of the seventeenth century, and the North American fur trade. Wide-ranging in its concern and the fruit of exhaustive research, the book is nevertheless written so as to be accessible and stimulating to the specialist and the student alike.

5 out of 5 stars A founding work of World History.......2000-07-07

I first encountered this book as part of my grandmother's current reading shortly after its publication. I next saw it as part of the required reading for an upper division undergraduate history course. I mention these to note that this book will interest the casual reader of history or the serious student. While it is scholarly, it's subject takes the reader on such a world tour that it practically qualifies as a travelogue. Curtin's accessible presentation makes this is an exciting as well as an informative read.

Curtin describes how the urge to exchange the goods uniquely available to specific areas has encouraged cultures to meet and exchange ideas as well as goods throughout the centuries. His examples of these exchanges, ranging from Greek city states and West African kingdoms, to Portuguese explorers in the interior of Brazil and Indonesian merchants so accustomed to sailing in search of commerce that they have no home on land, demonstrate the effects on individuals and societies of these meetings, and the accomodations neccesary between merchants to negotiate their differences and get the goods they desire. Along the way we see familiar historical characters in a new light, as with Curtin's discussion of the British trade with Russia and a reexamination of British-Indian trade from the Indian perspective, or his consideration of Spanish competition with the Dutch for South East Asian trade. Players one might not have considered emerge as major powers, as with Armenian trade, from their participation in the Silk Road between Ancient Rome and China, to their invaluable role as cross cultural ambassadors for most of Eurasia up to the nineteenth century. Curtin closes with a consideration of the birth of the modern global industrial economy.

This is a valuable book for any serious student of history and an interseting read for the lay reader as well.

                              Book Description

When John Brockman’s essay, “The New Humanists” appeared on his popular cutting-edge science website, EDGE (www.edge.org), he received a record number of responses from the intellectuals of the EDGE community. In his essay, Brockman noted that the American intellectual had become proudly or defiantly ignorant of major scientific accomplishments. According to Brockman, intellectual thought was becoming trapped in a “swelling spiral of commentary,” and often ignored the real world. Citing C.P. Snow’s theory of two cultures: the literary intellectual and the scientist, Brockman predicted an “emerging third culture” where scientists and other empirical thinkers, through their work and writing, would redefine who and what we are.

In The New Humanists: Science At the Edge, Brockman has assembled some of the top scientists of today: Jared Diamond, Steven Pinker, Daniel Dennett, Marvin Minsky, Lee Smolin, and others, and has them discuss the unique contributions each of them is making to the development of modern thought. Some of these thinkers are in sync, others in dissent, but what emerges in The New Humanists is a dialogue that serves as a support to Brockman’s theory and an introduction to some of the best scientific minds of the 21st century.

4 out of 5 stars Science on the cutting edge........2004-03-13

                              E. O. Wilson said, "the greatest enterprise of the mind has been and always will be the attempted linkage of the sciences and the humanities" (CONSILIENCE, Knopf, p. 8). In the Introduction to this collection of scientific essays, John Brockman (founder of the EDGE intellectual forum) asserts that humanity would be much better off if it were more scientifically literate. A Florentine, he observes, understood that to read Dante but to ignore science was ridiculous. Da Vinci was not only a great artist, but a great scientist and technologist as well. Similarly, Michelangelo both a great artist and and engineer. For Brockman, "the idea of embracing humanism while remaining ignorant of the latest scientific and technological achievements" is "incomprehensible" (p. 2). (For those interested in this topic, Stephen Jay Gould attempted to reconcile science with the humanities in final book, THE HEDGEHOG, THE FOX, AND THE MAGISTER'S POX.)

Brockman has collected essays from the top scientists of our time exploring cutting-edge developments in molecular biology, genetics, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, chaos theory, artificial life, the inflationary universe, fractals, complex adaptive systems, linguistics, superstrings, biodiversity, the human genome, cellular automata, fuzzy logic, virtual reality, cyberspace and computer technology. Science geeks (like me) will be pleased to find contributions here from Helena Cronin (evolutionary biologist), Daniel C. Dennett (philosopher), Jared Diamond (biogeographer), Ray Kurzweil (technologist), Richard Wrangham (biological anthropologist), Stephen M. Kosslyn and Steven Pinker (psycholgists), Andy Clark and Marc D. Hauser (cognitivite scientists), Rodney Brooks, David Gelernter, Jaron Lanier (computer scientists), and David Deutsch, Alan Guth, Martin Rees, and Lee Smolin (physicists), among others, each redefining what it means to be human, and each offering a deeper understanding of human life. More than just a collection of scientific essays, this book is a fascinating travel guide through our brave new world of science and technology.

What we have here is an excellent collection of scientists and philosophers writing articles about the latest research programmes in physics, artificial intellegence, cognitive science, and evolutionary biology. All of these contributers are members of www.edge.org, which is a forum for 'leading minds' to converge and converse on what the latest programmes, excitements, and theories in their field are.

What I thought I'd find is cocksure scientists writing in a clamour about their ultimate victory in the science wars and how this would inevitably lead to a reductionistic view of everyhing and anything. (Call me cynical, but the popular science market has been doing a lot of this lately). I did find a little of that only a little); by in large, though, the focus was simply on what certain fields were really doing, how it MAY affect other fields and the general populace, and overall abstainment when it comes to grand proclomations. No 'theories of everything', 'consciliences' that repeat Wilson's mistakes of wanting to 'scientize' all other disciplines, and no cockiness.

All that having been said, this book is absolutely thrilling. These scientists (the likes of Dennett, Pinker, Minsky, and Smolin) are writing fasinating essays of very promising theories in their fields and their roles in hashing them out. Can universes organize themselves? What are animals really thinking? Is the brain reducible to algorithms and if so, could machines achieve a first person experiencial perspective? How malleable is human nature?

If you are like me and REALLY excited about these questions and hearing scientists - if not answering them - discussing what answers might look like, then this book is a fantastic exploration. The big winners, you ask? In my humble opinion Jaron Lanier's essay on scientism and AI takes the cake; also Dennett's article delineating the intentional stance is good. David Deutch does an excellent job writing on quantum computation as doe Marvin Minsky on why AI might want to rethink how it looks at the mind.

The last 30-or-so pages is a miscelleneous collection of thoughts by leading scientists and philosophers in response to John Brockman's lead off essay discussing the relation of science and humanities. Again, Laneir comes off the most thoughtful and thought-provoking (ironically he is the only contributor WITHOUT a formal degree) but the rest of the responses are insightful and well written.

If you want to explore a variety of fields, points of view, and ideas, this is a tremendous book. Brockman and the contributors certainly did science and society a service in putting this one together.

5 out of 5 stars Humanists or humanoids?.......2003-10-09

It is sad but true that modern scientific culture is incapable of producing a genuine humanism. Between scientific reductionism and the confusions of Darwinism the era of science prospers in physics, but produces idiotic accounts of man, his nature and psychology. What's worse, these issues are very old and systematically studied in the generations after Newton where the limits of his achievement were quickly foreseen. All this has been forgotten in the current paradigm milieu where resurgent positivistic fundamentlism has decided to make all the old mistakes all over again. The educational system reinforces this mindset, and the worst of it is that intelligent technically inclined students are conditioned to a one dimensional view that is blind to the basic fact that science cannot in its current form stand as a foundationalism for the totality of human knowledge.
This otherwise interesting selection of essays rounds up the wannabe candidates for another round of Frankenstein humanism that won't amount to anything.
