"The game," writes Michael Arkush, "is a rite of passage for the father sharing his expertise with the child he is training for the future--the same child who, almost inevitably, will dethrone him at the first opportunity." All of the 25 professional golfers who relate their tales of golf life with Dad eventually did out-drive, out-chip, and out-putt their old men, but all acknowledge appreciatively the essential roles their fathers played in the journey, and it is to them that they offer homage. Interestingly, the lasting legacies go beyond the essentials on grip and stance: it is the intangibles that fly the course from tee to green here. Jack Nicklaus thanks his father for instilling self-confidence; Arnold Palmer praises his father for teaching him how to lose; Amy Alcott is grateful that her father let her know the only barriers in her way were those of her own making; Calvin Peete extols his father's insistence that he be a leader, not a follower. If Fairways and Dreams fairly overdoses on its own inspiration and sweetness, that's its intention; you'll find testimonials worth respecting, and lessons worth learning and remembering. --Jeff Silverman

Bauer Power.......2000-03-11
For me, reading a book about golf normally wouldn't have sparked my intrest, but I couldn't put this one down. I especially liked the part about the 18 year old phenom Elizabeth Bauer. She is my daughters hero. My husband passed away last year and he was teaching my daughter the game, and she was crushed. They were best friends. I saw this book in a store and bought it for my daughter and she became Elizabeth Bauer's biggest fan. I think the book really helped her to see that she can still make their dream come true. Now of course she wants to play for Duke University! Thank you Micheal Azurish for writing this wonderful book. It was nice for my daughter to read about famous people like Payne Stewart and see how they made it, and soon to be stars like Bauer. Thank you so much, a Five star book, Kerri and Kammi from North Carolina.
Wind Beneath Their Wings.......2000-01-27
While reading Fairways and Dreams, I can't help but let my eyes fill with tears when learning the stories of such golf greats as Payne Stewart and Amy Alcott. Their determination and drive to succeed inspires me. It's nice to read about amateurs as well, and I was happy to read Beth Bauers' story. I was privledged enough to see her play in several tournaments over the past few years (being a native of Florida) and I must say, she has turned into such a beautiful, accomplished young woman. Her father clearly taught her well. Beth is one of those people whom you know is just special. I think this book helps give others an idea of the talent these people hold,an insight as to who they are, and most importantly,it tells us all about the wind that will always be beneath their wings.
Book Description
Movie Acting, the Film Reader explores one of the most central but often overlooked aspects of cinema: film acting. Combining classic and recent essays, it examines key issues such as: What constitutes film acting? How is film acting different from stage acting? How has film acting changed over time? What signifies realism in film acting? How is acting different in different genres? What is the role of the character actor? In addition to theoretical essays, contributors provide detailed analyses of specific actors such as Lillian Gish, Marlon Brando and Sidney Poitier. Styles of acting discussed include silent film pantomime, 1930s comedic acting, The Method and acting in avant-garde films.
Book Description
Three Faces of Beauty offers a unique approach to understanding globalization and cultural change based on a comparative, ethnographic study of a nearly universal institution: the beauty salon. Susan Ossman traces the images and words of the beauty industry as they developed historically between Paris, Cairo, and Casablanca and then vividly demonstrates how such images are embodied today in salons located in each city.
By examining how images from fashion magazines, film, and advertising are enacted in beauty salons, Ossman demonstrates how embodiment is able to display and rework certain hierarchies. While offering the possibility of freedom from the tethers of status, nation, religion, and nature, beauty is created by these very categories and values, Ossman shows. Drawing on hundreds of interviews, she documents the various rituals of welcome, choice-making, pricing practices, and spatial arrangements in multiple salons . She also reveals ways in which patrons in all three cities imagine and co-opt looks they believe are fashionable in the other cities. By observing salons as scenes of instruction, Ossman reveals that beautiful bodies evolve within the intertwining contexts of media, modernity, location, time, postcolonialism, and male expectation.
Three Faces of Beauty will interest anthropologists as well as scholars of globalization, media and communication, postcolonialism, and women’s studies.
Customer Reviews:
Ossman Explores Global Beauty.......2002-06-06
"Imagine you are getting a haircut. You hold a picture up beside your face, telling the beautician to cut a bit more here or feather the bangs, as in the photograph. In one salon you hear the voices of several women telling you that you really ought not to have your hair cut as short as the model in the picture" visiting Associate Professor in the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies Susan Ossman challenges readers in Three Faces of Beauty (Duke University Press, March 2002). In another salon, a beautician may strive to reproduce the pictured hairstyle as faithfully as possible; in another, you are the focus and asked to "please put away that awful photograph - would you not rather simply look like the real you?"
In her latest book, Ossman explores and compares the atmosphere, discourse and activity in a variety of beauty salons in three cities, which the publisher describes as "a unique approach to understanding globalization and cultural change based on a comparative, ethnographic study of a nearly universal institution: the beauty salon." She conceives of herself a "butterfly hunter" tracking elusive and fleeting images of beauty from Paris and Cairo with their "long histories as hubs of commerce, fashion, and scholarship" to Casablanca on the "outskirts of fashion," seeking to capture these images as representations of globalization and modernization.
Drawing on hundreds of interviews conducted between 1993 and 1996, she treats beauty salons as public fora and as centers of empowerment for women that challenge tradition and mediate global trends into local practices. Choosing three cities outside the United States for her research, Ossman explores international perspectives on globalization as distinct from Americanization.
The return of beauty salons to Afghanistan, where they were banned under the Taliban, makes Ossman's new book especially timely. As images of Muslim women receive increased public attention around the world, Ossman's research uncovers practices that may seem exotic in the West, such as the publication of fashion magazines for veiled women.
Calling Three Faces of Beauty "a delightful and insightful read," past President of the American Historical Association Natalie Zemon Davis of Princeton University finds that "Susan Ossman lets us hear women's hopes for beauty and difference - out of or under the head shawl."

Interesting..........2006-05-07
Interesting that 3 of the 4 reviews for this book are all by one person, and while all are different, all are also 5 stars! The only other review is far more critical and useful. I'm taking the advice of the 3-star review and buying a competing book.
Awkward.......2004-01-13
This book is rather muddled. In an attempt to explicate the workings of the cryptic clue, the author has invented a bewildering variety of terms (e.g. olapsek, parabrebit) that makes the text more confusing than the clues themselves. Poor organization and type design exacerbate the problem.
It does list quite a few of the standard equivalencies found in (British) puzzles, and is somewhat useful in that regard, but beginners will find the Random House guide to be much more helpful.
A new language fully explained........2003-04-29
By reading this new book the complete novice will find plenty of good
advice on how to go about getting started on solving cryptic crosswords. In
breaking down and examining the words that are used in example clues, the
author gives insights into how to arrive at correct answers with a fresh
approach.
After a very few hours with this book most people should be able to start
filling in answers to the puzzles found in most magazines and newspapers
with confidence... the pleasure of understanding a new language fully
explained.
The Daily Mail - Books on Friday, 4 April 2003.......2003-04-29
If you are totally baffled by cryptic crosswords, and irritated that other people can whizz through them, here at last is a book that cracks open the code. With clever use of underlining and italics, this book unscrambles and demystifies hundreds, if not thousands of fiendish clues. It also explains many of the tricks of the trade; for example there are reams of words like chewed, drunken and rebuilt which indicate you've got to mix up the letters you are given and make an anagram. Love usually means 0 (like in tennis), five usually means you need a V (like the Roman numeral) while Loud often indicates ff (from the musical notation for forte). Very clear and authorative for beginners or old crossword hands.

Book Description
As one of the most widely used desktop applications ever created, Excel is familiar to just about everyone with a computer and a keyboard. Yet most of us don't know the full extent of what Excel can do, mostly because of its recent growth in power, versatility, and complexity. The truth is that there are many ways Excel can help make your job easier-beyond calculating sums and averages in a standard spreadsheet.
Analyzing Business Data with Excel shows you how to solve real-world business problems by taking Excel's data analysis features to the max. Rather than focusing on individual Excel functions and features, the book keys directly on the needs of business users. Most of the chapters start with a business problem or question, and then show you how to create pointed spreadsheets that address common data analysis issues.
Aimed primarily at experienced Excel users, the book doesn't spend much time on the basics. After introducing some necessary general tools, it quickly moves into more specific problem areas, such as the following:
- Statistics
- Pivot tables
- Workload forecasting
- Modeling
- Measuring quality
- Monitoring complex systems
- Queuing
- Optimizing
- Importing data
If you feel as though you're getting shortchanged by your overall application of Excel, Analyzing Business Data with Excel is just the antidote. It addresses the growing Excel data analysis market head on. Accountants, managers, analysts, engineers, and supervisors-one and all-will learn how to turn Excel functionality into actual solutions for the business problems that confront them.
Customer Reviews:
Very Disappointed........2006-12-29
We bought this book back in mid January 2006.
It's been a year since the published date on
January 1, 2006, where are ALL the EXCEL data?
The XL_Applications.zip posted on 28-Aug-2006
on O'Reilly website consists of about 1/3 of
ALL the data/examples in the book.
The book has 12 chapters; however, not a single
chapter is provided with complete EXCEL data/
examples. What XL_Applications.zip contains
are some selected data/examples from chapter 3
to 8. Again, NOT a single chapter is provided
with ALL the EXCEL data/examples used in that
chapter.
I won't recommend this book until O'Reilly takes
"actions" to provide the readers with ALL the
EXCEL data/examples used in this book.
For reading a data analysis book w/o ALL the
data/examples to run it ourselves in EXCEL is
NOT useful at all.
You may wonder, how about type those data in?
No way, because most (if not all) of the data/
examples are very long and can only be shown
"partially" in the figures/screen shots!
Great Book, but where's the data?.......2006-08-05
Overall this is a good book, but it would be much nicer if they provided Excel worksheets with the data used in the book's examples. Some sample code is provided for dowload on Oreilly's website, but this does not include example data. Nonetheless, the book is worth looking at.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-06-19
Are you an experienced Excel user? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Gerald Knight, has done an outstanding job of writing a practical guide that shows you how to solve real-world business problems by taking Excel's data analysis features to the max.
Knight, begins by covering averages, trends, correlation, distributions and array formulas. Then, the author examines pivot table basics and ways to modify data to make it work better with pivot tables. Next, he covers the application development process, worksheet organization, and forecasting techniques. The author continues by exploring regression, problem definition, analysis, model construction, and interpretation of results. He also works with statistical process control, X and Y charts, and application design. Knight, then examines data requirements, statistical techniques and logic, application design, and organization. Then, he shows you how to apply formatting, VBA, and logic in an application that measures worker performance in a queuing operation. The author continues the discussion of queuing with another application by focusing on the status of the queue. He also explains how to use Goal Seek and Solver for various kinds of problems. Knight next covers importing from text files, databases, and XML. Then, he examines common problems with dates, numeric information, dealing with data in report form, and equivalence problems. Finally, he covers display design, color combination, dealing with complexity, and visual consideration.
This most excellent book keys directly on the needs of business users. More importantly, this book addresses the growing Excel data analysis market head-on.
An outstanding set of connections between Excel and standard business use.......2006-05-02
Gerald Knight's Analyzing Business Data With Excel provides an outstanding set of connections between Excel and standard business use. Plenty of 'how to' computer books focus on the fundamentals of learning Excel without applying these lessons to basic business data analysis: Analyzing Business Data With Excel solves this in using real- world business problems as examples. From pivot tables and charts to statistical analysis choices and applications which can be easily updated, no business user should be without Analyzing Business Data With Excel.
Exactly what I was looking for!!.......2006-03-30
As a strategy analyst I'm always looking for concise ways to present data and make it automated and professional-looking without lots of code that none of my clients can use.
I agree with the previous reviewer, other books come at Excel and similar applications with a feature by feature breakdown so that in usage YOU have to work backwards to figure out how to apply software features to your problem.
This book is organized by business problem and then proceeds to breakdown how your problem applies to the software solution. There is very useful code in some of the models, but nothing horribly difficult to implement.
Excellent addition to my reference library. I've truly never seen a business data analysis book as well put together as this and I've been searching for years. You will not be disappointed.

Simply the best book in Excel Data Analysis.......2004-08-29
This book is the number one in Excel Data analysis. Very comprehensive and the best of all its all about doing data analysis real time. The book has taken a practical approach with real data from business which helps one immensely to grasp the logic.
Excellent buy. Would recommend it to anyone.
A Typical Computer Book! Too many critical errors!.......2004-05-25
The Book plan is very good. Fairly well written. However it was written primarily for Excel 2002, not Excel 2000. Chapter four which was one of my main reasons for purchase did not help me much with Pivot Tables. NONE of the Exercises in Chapter 4 would work on my excel 2000, and the Microsoft on line was of no help. Any Buyer wanting to use this book with Excel 2000 should forget about it. The book advertizes on its cover that it covers Office XP and Office 2000. It does NOT work well with 2000, and I am not sure about 2002.
My rating is Excellent.......2003-05-31
I appreciated the advanced level that this book offers. It has been a source of reference for me at work and has opened new vista's for me in where I want to be professionally. I would have liked to have seen more automation via code behind the scenes; but this book delivered what is was intended to do explore the analysis of data using Excel. He opens another door for the user with Data Analyzer and I look forward to more publications by this author, because of his knowledge of the material covered. He is not just another writer who reads a few help files and puts out a book, he is a developer in every sence of the word. I also found some good articles by this author on the MS web site which should give you a good indication of his writing and Excel abilities. The articles are what influenced my decision to purchase this book. Another thing I liked about the book was it comes in eBook form on the CD which helps if you want to read along as you do the exercises. Paul, how about another that goes even higher, maybe with Data Analyzer and SQL?
Good book but for very advance users only.......2003-05-21
This book is for IT professional only.
Don't expect this is a step by step series book.
The author leaves you to investigate the concepts on already built worksheets from the disc that comes with the book. Doing so leaves a lot of assumptions that you know what you look for to begin with.
However if you are very advance users, you might find it better that way since the number of pages reduce a lot.
It means you can finish the book much sooner and the book can be a good comprehensive reference.
To general public, it is a 3 stars,
but I would give it a 4.5 stars because I do learn something from it.

Book Description
"Time Maps extends beyond all of the old clichés about linear, circular, and spiral patterns of historical process and provides us with models of the actual legends used to map history. It is a brilliant and elegant exercise in model building that provides new insights into some of the old questions about philosophy of history, historical narrative, and what is called straight history."-Hayden White, University of California, Santa Cruz
Who were the first people to inhabit North America? Does the West Bank belong to the Arabs or the Jews? Why are racists so obsessed with origins? Is a seventh cousin still a cousin? Why do some societies name their children after dead ancestors?
As Eviatar Zerubavel demonstrates in Time Maps, we cannot answer burning questions such as these without a deeper understanding of how we envision the past. In a pioneering attempt to map the structure of our collective memory, Zerubavel considers the cognitive patterns we use to organize the past in our minds and the mental strategies that help us string together unrelated events into coherent and meaningful narratives, as well as the social grammar of battles over conflicting interpretations of history. Drawing on fascinating examples that range from Hiroshima to the Holocaust, from Columbus to Lucy, and from ancient Egypt to the former Yugoslavia, Zerubavel shows how we construct historical origins; how we tie discontinuous events together into stories; how we link families and entire nations through genealogies; and how we separate distinct historical periods from one another through watersheds, such as the invention of fire or the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Most people think the Roman Empire ended in 476, even though it lasted another 977 years in Byzantium. Challenging such conventional wisdom, Time Maps will be must reading for anyone interested in how the history of our world takes shape.

Excellent resource on Bible life and times !.......2006-07-04
I have frankly only read a couple of chapters thus far, but if the rest of this gem of a book lives up to the "intro", WOW! To be fair, the authors -- not "pro-Bible" or "pro-Christian" by any means -- miss the mark on a number of issues; however, they have an uncanny ability to tie both what has been found true archaeologically, and what is true in the Middle East today (contemporary living/contemporary culture), to scripture.
As a Christian for over 50 years, I get very tired of the old, hackneyed arguments, "you can't believe a word of the Bible! It's nothing but myths and fairy tales." Not true, as an honest reading of this volume will demonstrate. Just one example is an aqueduct in an ancient city that has been found--that indeed to this very day continues to provide an underground water source for that ancient city. This same aqeduct is mentioned as having been built by command of an ancient king-- in the Old Testament. This is just one of MANY FACTS in the Bible confirmed in the "real world." For any SERIOUS Bible student, I'd have to call this volume not only a "MUST READ!" but ESSENTIAL to your library! It will be in mine!

Small, Simple, but Worthy.......2000-08-13
This book journeys back into biblical times, where the reader may learn about ancient customs, jobs, food, and furnishings of the Old and New Testaments. Now in its third edition, Concordia Publishing House first published this book in 1947 as part of the Concordia Leadership Training Series. Later, in 1959, Dr. Klinck revised the first edition (therefore, the 2nd edition). Now in this 3rd edition, Dr. Kiehl has revised the text, bringing it up to date.
Each chapter of the text list dozens of specific Bible references, which will aid any reader from pastor to layperson. Also included in this little gem are simple line drawings and illustrations that show commonly used equipment, materials, structures, and raw goods. Last, the text includes review questions and exercises at the end of each chapter, which may or may not be used to increase biblical knowledge and strengthen the chapters' lessons.

Book Description
Used in undergraduate classrooms across the country, this book is a clearly written, rigorous introduction to differential equations and their applications. Fully understandable to students who have had one year of calculus, this book differentiates itself from other differential equations texts through its engaging application of the subject matter to interesting scenarios. This fourth edition incorporates earlier introductory material on bifurcation theory and adds a new chapter on Sturm-Liouville boundary value problems. Computer programs in C, Pascal, and Fortran are presented throughout the text to show the read how to apply differential equations towards quantitative problems.
Customer Reviews:
Great applications.......2007-03-12
This book discusses several excellent applications. I shall summarise a few of the simplest and most beautiful ones. Warfare models. Consider first a battle between two conventional armies, A and B. Each army has a constant efficiency coefficient (determined by weaponry, training, etc.): an A soldier takes out a enemies per unit time while a B soldier takes out b enemies per unit time. The battle is then described by the differential equations dA/dt=-bB and dB/dt=-aA. Dividing the first by the second gives aAdA = bBdB, which we integrate to get aA^2-bB^2=constant. The sign of this constant determines the outcome of the battle, since if, for example, there are side A troops still standing when B reaches zero then the constant must be positive. Thus the strength of an army is proportional to the square of its size, and this has an important strategical implication: never divide your forces. Now consider a battle between a conventional army A and a guerilla army G. The conventional army suffers casualties as before, dA/dt=-gG, while their offensive strategy consists in firing into the jungle more or less at random, making guerilla casualties proportional not only to the conventional army's efficiency a and size A but also the number of guerilla troops G, i.e. dG/dt=-aAG. Dividing the first equation by the second gives aAda=gdG and integrating gives (aA^2)/2-gG=constant. Thus the guerilla can divide its forces without loss, while the conventional army still does not want to divide its forces. Predator-pray systems. Consider the system of food fish and sharks. With no sharks around, the food fish would grow exponentially, x'=ax. The sharks alone, having nothing to eat, would die off exponentially, y'=-cy. In the combined system the food fish are eaten at a rate proportional to the number of encounters with sharks so x'=ax-bxy, and more sharks live as a result of this so y'=-cy+dxy. An equilibrium solution is x=c/d and y=a/b. We cannot find other solutions explicitly but we can prove that they are periodic (also very plausible from the direction field, should we choose to draw one; there are none anywhere in the book) and prove the following qualitative theorem: for any solution, the average number of food fish is c/d and the average number of sharks is a/b. Proof: Let x, y be solutions with period T. Take x'=ax-bxy and divide it by x to get x'/x=a-by. The integral of the left hand side from 0 to T is log(x(T))-log(x(0))=0, so the integral of the right hand side is also 0, so y-average=(1/T)(integral of y from 0 to T)=a/b. Similarly, taking y'=-cy+dxy, dividing by Ty and integrating from 0 to T gives x-average=c/d. Volterra used this result to explain why Italian fishers caught a larger percentage of sharks during world war I when overall fishing was reduced. If we assume that fishing by net simply catches a random handful of fish in proportion to their number then the system above becomes x'=ax-bxy-ex and y'=-cy+dxy-ey, i.e. x'=(a-e)x-bxy and y'=-(c+e)y+dxy, which is just the same system with different coefficients, making the new averages x=(c+e)/d and y=(a-e)/b. In other words: an increase in fishing benefits the food fish and a decrease benefits the sharks. Population growth. The standard model for population growth is the logistic equation p'=kp(1-p/s), where s is the maximum sustainable population. The observed periodicity of many populations is to be explained by a large population's susceptibility to epidemics, as is confirmed when we study an epidemiological model in detail later. But right after population growth we turn instead to the spread of technological innovations, which is not terribly exciting, but it can easily be translated into a simplistic model for the spread of a disease. The disease spreads in proportion to the size of the infected population p and, because of limited encounters as more people are infected, in proportion to the uninfected population (n-p), so p'=kp(n-p). But by factoring out the total population n we see that this is simply an instance of the logistic equation, where the total population corresponds to the sustainable population and the infected population corresponds to the living population. Thus mathematics tells us that the growth of a population is the spread of the decease of life.
Differential Equations and Their Applications.......2007-02-09
From a pedagogy point of view this is a bad book becuase of the way its chapters are organized and presented. There seems to be a lack of a natural order of topic in the book, specifically that theory and applications are intertwined/overlapped rather than placed in seperate chapters. Also, few exercises are presented at the end of a section.
Putting aside the pedagogy philosophy, this is a great book for a one semester course in Differential Equations but I would rather choose "Differential Equations, The Classic 5th edition" by Dennis G. Zill.
Outstanding clarity; this is an excellent text.......2006-07-29
This book is extraordinarily clear as well as being concise (but never too much so) in the mathematical parts. Discussion of applications is verbose, but is kept in separate sections; this material can be omitted entirely or read later without any detrimental effect to the flow of the book. However, the discussion of the applications is interesting and deep, and would be useful (and fun) for motivated students to read.
The book begins with a no-nonsense discussion of how to solve differential equations analytically. Unlike many books, it gives clear instructions to the reader as to how to know which techniques are applicable. Also, it does not introduce qualitative or numerical methods until it has already developed a number of analytic techniques, and in my opinion, this results in greater clarity than the path most books take of integrating (or should I say jumbling?) the material together. The book gradually and logically covers the ground between analytic and numerical, moving towards actually writing algorithms, which are included in the text. The emphasis is always on understanding. Exercises are straightforward and useful.
My only complaint is that, in this modern age, the C programs should be included in the text and the Pascal and FORTRAN ones relegated to the index. (It is the other way around, alas.)
This book is simply wonderful for anyone studying differential equations for the first time. I do not understand why undergraduate institutions use the more commercialized texts instead of ones like this. This is a great book; it would be excellent for a textbook or for self-study.
A good comprehensive ODE book.......2006-05-21
I quite liked this book. It taught the material in a different order than I am used to, which gave me a more complete understanding. I would recommend it, especially to people who already know a bit about differential equations, as it is quite wordy and assumes some prior knowledge.
Engaging and stimulating text.......2005-07-07
As an academic I rarely if ever use textbooks because I find their writing style bland and disengaging--especially in my own area (economics). Braun's text is the exception to the rule: this is a textbook that is so well written it could qualify as entertainment. At the same time the major issues in the field are covered well, complete with an overview of the linear algebra required for doing ODEs and a good introduction to nonlinearity and chaos. It may not, as one reviewer notes, provide a complete and rigorous coverage of this highly technical field, but it does what a text should do but so few achieve: it excites its readers and inspires them to delve further into this fascinating discipline.
