Book Description
My caregiver training started early in life, extended through the 44 years after Eileen was diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis, and did not end until her death in 2001. At home, I provided full care to her, planned and thought ahead, but always was willing to sacrifice my personal freedom, and to suffer frequent heartbreak. As a caregiver I received a lifetime of gratitude from Eileen, to give me satisfaction of having successfully met her daily MS demands. The early training I received in childhood coincided with the years of the Great Depression, from the late 1920's, through the 1930's , and the first years of the 1940's. During that time I had the least possible financial assistance from anybody, yet I became an unpaid electrician, plumber, carpenter, auto repairer...a Mr. Fixit for the entire Fenley family. The four years I served in the US Army were very pleasant, advancing from private to major, in an endless procession of challenging but interesting extra duties, in addition to my regular ones. These I describe as my lucky Army breaks. I have bared my soul. Happy reading!

Book Description
W. T. Lhamon 's Deliberate Speed is a cultural history of the 1950s in the United States that directly confronts the typical view of this decade as an arid wasteland. By surveying the artistic terrain of the period--examining works by figures as varied as Miles Davis, Ralph Ellison, Robert Frank, Allen Ginsberg, Little Richard, Charlie Parker, Jackson Pollock, Thomas Pynchon, and Ludwig Wittgenstein--Lhamon demonstrates how many of the distinctive elements that so many attribute to the revolutionary period of the 1960s had their roots in the fertile soil of the 1950s. Taking his title from Chief Justice Earl Warren's desegregation decree of 1955, Lhamon shows how this phrase, "deliberate speed," resonates throughout the culture of the entire decade. The 1950s was a period of transition--a time when the United States began its shift from an industrial society to a postindustrial society, and the era when the first barriers between African-American culture and white culture began to come down. Deliberate Speed is the story of a nation and a culture making the rapid transition to the increasingly complex world that we inhabit today.
Customer Reviews:
This is a great book about 50's America and American Culture.......1998-12-14
Lhamon has a unique view of the American 1950's. Anyone who is interested in American culture would do well to check out this book. Even if you have not been specifically interested in the 50's before, if you have an interest in the literature, popular music, photography, and pop culture of the last half of the 20th century, you will find the seeds of change lovingly exposed here in "Deliberate Speed."
Revealing the myth that the 60's was the time of change.......1998-10-13
Lhamon effectively presents a detailed movement from the 50's to reflect the times of change - on all levels. Never before have I read such a concise, informative, and enlightening piece which details this era with an open mind and new perspective. I now have a reason to re-read Ellison. I am sure I will find nuances which previously escaped me. As a solid fiction reader, I found this non-fiction piece definitely worth the read.
Important........1998-05-05
The 1950s. Today conceived as a mish-mash of artificiality -- fake clothes, fake materials, fake faces, fake lives, fake lawns, fake barbecues, fake politics, fake economies -- and of staticism.
Lhamon rips asunder the myth of the 1950s and explores how the decade instead provided a turbulent, dynamic foundation for the forces that have shaped present-day.
Those who wish to understand the antecedents of contemporary America would do well to start here.

Fascinating exploration of Lovecraft's realms of dream.......2002-09-23
While this is primarily a game book, "The Complete Dreamlands" is a well-researched (for the most part) guide that collates information from Lovecraft, Lumley, and other authors (as well as some bits added by the book's creators) together- painting a terrific portrait of this fantastical counterpart to the "real" Cthulhu Mythos universe.

Penetration Testing and Network Defense (Networking Technology)
ASIN: 1597490210
Release Date: 2005-06-01 |
Book Description
Penetration testing a network requires a delicate balance of art and science. A penetration tester must be creative enough to think outside of the box to determine the best attack vector into his own network, and also be expert in using the literally hundreds of tools required to execute the plan. This book provides both the art and the science.
The authors of the book are expert penetration testers who have developed many of the leading pen testing tools; such as the Metasploit framework. The authors allow the reader inside their heads to unravel the mysteries of thins like identifying targets, enumerating hosts, application fingerprinting, cracking passwords, and attacking exposed vulnerabilities. Along the way, the authors provide an invaluable reference to the hundreds of tools included on the bootable-Linux CD for penetration testing.
* Covers both the methodology of penetration testing and all of the tools used by malicious hackers and penetration testers
* The book is authored by many of the tool developers themselves
* This is the only book that comes packaged with the "Auditor Security Collection"; a bootable Linux CD with over 300 of the most popular open source penetration testing tools
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-08-23
Great starter book into Pen Testing. Big book with lots of information. Great book to read to prepare to start your CEH or CISSP studies.
good introduction.......2007-02-22
If you live and breathe IT security, this books is for you. I would like to somewhat disagree with some of the earlier reviewers. I don't think this book was intended to be "the one and only" penetration toolkit manual. However, what it does do - it introduces one to the world of penetration testing providing enough information and examples on a wide variety of tools. A lot of great subjects are covered, such as reconnaissance, enumeration, scanning, web application testing, wireless penetration and more. It's a very insightful read, even for those who are just researching in the area of security. It will open your eyes on many aspects of information security. The CD itself is a good resource, but you may need to update some applications by now. Nessus signatures do get updated regularly.
Solid Penetration Testing Book.......2007-02-06
At around 700 pages in size, the 'Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit' by Johnny Long is a solid reference material which is a nice pickup for anyone that is concerned with this subject matter. As with all Syngress books, you aren't buying these for the highest quality paper or design, but rather the material within. This is a solid book that most users should find helpful in their jobs.
**** RECOMMENDED
Excellent reference........2007-01-22
If you are going to do any work in the Information Assurance world you will want to add this book to your shelf and keep it handy. The authors of this book know the topics and present information clearly.
Each chapter is a stand-alone lesson, and all chapters build on each other to create a big-picture of exploiting any network and reporting results. The CD that comes with the book gives you excellent tools to start or fill out your library. Some are getting dated as of this writing, but all are still solid tools that you can update once you've learned them.
I highly recommend this book!

This book not only covers what tools are available for penetration testing but also details how to use them to effectively test the system. Some of the tools, such as whois and ping, will be very familiar to the Linux user and most power users of other operating systems. Other tools are less familiar but very powerful and a real insight into what can be done to gather information on a system before attempting to penetrate it. Part of what makes this book really interesting is the way the authors approach this subject. They don't walk the reader through all the details of a handful of tools but instead they take a task-oriented approach. For example they go first through enumerating and scanning a system, then testing databases, web server testing, web application testing, wireless penetration and network devices. They then end this section with information about writing open source security tools. Chapter 8 starts a section on the Open Source vulnerability scanner Nessus. It automatically finds many problems in the system by trying to penetrate it using various scripts. The results are captured and the generated reports detail the information it was able to obtain. This is a very powerful testing product and one of the most common ones you will find in the marketplace.
The authors detail how to set up a Nessus client and server, scan the system and understand the results. Although almost three hundred pages are dedicated to Nessus it is a very powerful and highly configurable program that can consume a full book by itself to use its full potential. Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit is highly recommended, insightful, and very interesting to read and experiment with.

Book Description
In offering here a highly readable yet comprehensive description of New England's Indians as they lived when European settlers first met them, the author provides a well-rounded picture of the natives as neither savages nor heroes, but fellow human beings existing at a particular time and in a particular environment. He dispels once and for all the common notion of native New England as peopled by a handful of savages wandering in a trackless wilderness.
In sketching the picture the author has had help from such early explorers as Verrazano, Champlain, John Smith, and a score of literate sailors; Pilgrims and Puritans; settlers, travelers, military men, and missionaries. A surprising number of these took time and trouble to write about the new land and the characteristics and way of life of its native people. A second major background source has been the patient investigations of modern archaeologists and scientists, whose several enthusiastic organizations sponsor physical excavations and publications that continually add to our perception of prehistoric men and women, their habits, and their environment.
This account of the earlier New Englanders, of their land and how they lived in it and treated it; their customs, food, life, means of livelihood, and philosophy of life will be of interest to all general audiences concerned with the history of Native Americans and of New England.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating, Informative, and Flawed.......2004-03-22
Of course I was attracted to this book for all the reasons you are, and it does present some interesting insights into aboriginal life in our region. Mr. Russell is strongest in is knowledge of Algonquian vocabulary and on the subjects of hunting and cultivation. Prepare yourself for an extensive discussion of maize. And who knew that the Pamola was "the spirit of the night air?" The reader will be disappointed, however, in the shallow treatment of arts and clothing. Illustrations are principally rough sketches, and some of the few photos are of museum dioramas. One illustration shows tools "possibly used to remove bark from trees," though those tools appear identical to what are called pestles for grinding maize in other illustrations and photos. Readers with high regard for science should completely skip the chapter titled "Health and Illness," because it is infuriating. It is one thing to report the Indians' superstitions, and quite another to endorse them. Even so, Mr. Russell's confusing superstition for fact shows up in other chapters, and detracts from the book's value. He shouldn't say that wild animals are known to eat tobacco as a remedy for snakebite if there is not the slightest evidence to support it. And to suggest, as he does, that "certain medicine men were especially sensitive to atmospheric pressure changes and relative humidity," enabling them to predict rain two days away is, well, irresponsible, and detracts from Mr. Russell's overall scholarship. Still, I rate the book a three out of five, because anyone with such an obvious affection for the New England Indian is a kindred spirit.
Very Informative.......2002-11-29
If you want to know what real daily life was like for New England tribes before the Europeans arrived, this is the book to read. I especially enjoyed the chapter about what a typical day would be like in the summer or the winter. Very enjoyable reading, also great to keep for reference.
Best resource you'll find!.......2000-09-28
This is an amazing resource on the everyday lives of the natives of New England. I love this book! So many interesting details, like how the English were shocked at the amount of wildlife they found in the area, how the natives were disgusted by European war tactics, and how native women gave birth to their babies (I won't go into detail there!). The author draws his info from the first explorers of the east coast to early settlers, using plenty of quotes. There are black and white drawings, maps, and photos too. This book is a colorful and educational step back in time. You'll learn things you would never have thought to ask about. Whether you are researching or just into history, it's a great book to have.
A must for any Native American enthusiast........1998-05-03
I picked this book up a couple of weeks ago at the Harvard Book store in Boston, Mass. It is an excellent book for anyone researching the pre-contact Native Peoples of New England. From Personal Characteristics to Horticulture and Warfare, Howard Russell's publication is phenomenal. It is full of primary source excerpts, which really backs up the author's writing. A must-read.

Book Description
This lively and far-reaching account of the politics, religion, and culture of England in the century and a half after the Norman Conquest provides a vivid picture of everyday existence, and increases our understanding of all aspects of medieval society. This was a period in which the ruling dynasty and military aristocracy were deeply enmeshed with the politics and culture of France. Professor Bartlett describes their conflicts, and their preoccupations - the sense of honour, the role of violence, and the glitter of tournament, heraldry, and Arthurian romance. He explores the mechanics of government; assesses the role of the Church at a time of radical developments in religious life and organization; and investigates the peasant economy, the foundation of this society, and the growing urban and commercial activity. There are colourful details of the everyday life of ordinary men and women, with their views on the past, on sexuality, on animals, on death, the undead, and the occult. The result is a fascinating and comprehensive portrayal of a period which begins with conquest and ends in assimilation.
Customer Reviews:
Effortless transportation through time.......2005-01-11
Bartlett acts as a wonderful guide through the many layers of Medieval life. As he says in the Preface this is an "entry-point of the understanding of processes only slowly unfolding, sometimes across centuries". The book has a very narrow focus in both place and time, yet goes very deep in detail covering all aspects of medieval life. It is a long book that could easily be read in chapters in no particular order, but I read it straight through cover to cover hopeing it would not end for want of Bartletts engaging prose and wealth of fascinating source material. Perhaps the best compliment of all is my desire to want to learn more.
It is an academic book and not always easy with some sections that are fairly boring (economic production figures, calculations of the number of sheep in the country), but overall the balance of interesting material outweighs these sections and makes the effort well worth the veins of gold. Most of all, it is highly trustworthy and authoritative; Bartlett is one in a long line of English historians who endeavored to be readable, arming themselves, as Roger of Wendover (13th C) says, against both "the listless hearer and the fastidious reader" by "presenting something which each may relish," and so providing for the joint "profit and entertainment of all."
Excellent overview.......2003-12-02
This book is one that I reach for constantly when I need to check something; in addition Bartlett writes in an effortless style that makes him a pleasure to read. He's a master of the primary sources; the only think missing from this book is a good bibliography of secondary, specialized material.
Excellent coverage of a complex and exciting period.......2001-08-11
Anyone familiar with the Cambridge History collection will be familiar with the format of this book. Essentially Bartlett's work is an expansion of an epoch of English history from, roughly, 1066 to 1200 and covers the reigns of William the Conqueror and the generations of Norman and Angevin kings succeeding him on the throne. Like the Cambridge History series, England Under the Norman and Angevin Kings dissects the period, examining life from nearly every aspect: military events of each reign, relations between king and nobility, king and commoner and king and heirs, social strata, cost of armaments, land holding and land use, cost of living and inflationary trends, law courts, rise of a merchant middle class, growth of cities, etc. The volume is incredibly thorough in its coverage of the period, and its bibliography is impressive. Original documents are described and cited throughout the book, providing the dedicated reader with primary sources with which to follow up his/her interests. It would be an excellent secondary source book for someone doing research on the period. It is however very deep and detailed and takes considerable time to read. Light reading it isn't, even for the history buff, but it is worth doing for anyone interested in this very active, very complex period.
An ambitious overview of an interesting period.......2000-04-14
Bartlett tries to cover practically every aspect of life during his period, from court politics to village religious life to sexual mores. He does a nice jobe of balancing the general and the specific, reinforcing his general conclusions with interesting anecdotes. Some parts are more tedious than others, depending on your tastes - since he deals with so many issues, some are bound to interest the reader more than others.

Book Description
This accessible work is the first in more than seventy-five years to discuss the many roles of adrenaline in regulating the "inner world" of the body. David S. Goldstein, an international authority and award-winning teacher, introduces new concepts concerning the nature of stress and distress across the body's regulatory systems. Discussing how the body's stress systems are coordinated, and how stress, by means of adrenaline, may affect the development, manifestations, and outcomes of chronic diseases, Goldstein challenges researchers and clinicians to use scientific integrative medicine to develop new ways to treat, prevent, and palliate disease.
Goldstein explains why a former attorney general with Parkinson disease has a tendency to faint, why young astronauts in excellent physical shape cannot stand up when reexposed to Earth's gravity, why professional football players can collapse and die of heat shock during summer training camp, and why baseball players spit so much.
Adrenaline and the Inner World is designed to supplement academic coursework in psychology, psychiatry, endocrinology, cardiology, complementary and alternative medicine, physiology, and biochemistry. It includes an extensive glossary.
