3 out of 5 stars An All American Story.......2001-11-29

Having enjoyed many success stories based on peoples lives, business and various ups and downs, this book was refreshing in that the overall story was not only true but balanced. It could probably be a story based on many people who had similar trials and tribulations. A very quick read.

4 out of 5 stars A well balanced look at Joe Paterno and the politics of college football........2006-04-18

For most sports fans, the name Joe Paterno is a familiar one. The images conjured up by the name may vary...some see a living god while others see a need for change. Regardless of your views, this book is informative and well balanced. As a loyal Penn State fan, I found this book to be well written and objective. The writing style is not too stuffy or "textbook" like, yet the author is able to remain insightful as well as entertaining. This book focuses on the work of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno during the 2004 season; the bulk of the story is a tale of the ups and downs that took place during that season. However, there is also a great deal of exposition when it comes to the privilige, politics, and power of Division I college football. In some sections of the story, Penn State University and the town of State College, PA become a unique world where attitudes can change like the seasons. What I found to be the most informative was the description of Paterno's interactions with the media.

Joe Paterno's life serves as an interesting character study. Mostly because of his actions and the way that he has oriented his life around the university and the athletic program. This book does not force its hand by telling you how to feel about Joe, instead it describes the situation and leaves you to draw your own conclusions. There is some obvious admiration for Paterno, but it does not reach the point of being one-sided.

I would recommend this book for all college football fans. If nothing else, this story serves as an informative piece about the "hidden" side of commercialization and college sports.

5 out of 5 stars Great subject matter makes a great book........2001-06-08

I have always said that if I had a son worthy of playing big-time college football, I'd send him to Penn State to play for Joe Paterno. My thoughts haven't changed a whip since reading this book. Michael O'Brien does a wonderful job in detailing the life and philosophy of one of the most colorful and downright good people to ever live.

O'Brien pulls no punches. Paterno is brash, at times mean and expects a lot out of his players, but he is also a loving father figure to players and the student body. Paterno is no saint though. If you don't produce, you are in trouble... but isn't that the way of the world. His philosophy, richly detailed in a chapter on Patero's coaching style, should be copied by the Spurriers and the Sabans of the world.

I haven't read any other O'Brien books, but I definitely will be looking for them on my next trip to the book store. This book is a quick read, but it makes you feel good about the world again when you realize that there are still people like Paterno out there that don't compromise themselves for money and fame.

Now I just wish O'Brien would write a book on Coach K because if I had a son that was good at hoops I'd send him to Duke.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This One if you Own Other Paterno Books.......2000-09-01

If I had bought this book first, I probably would have been happy with the book. But as an owner of four other books relating to Coach Paterno I found this one to be a repeat of the other writings. I really learned nothing new from this book at all. Maybe I expected too much or maybe Paterno's story has already been told.

5 out of 5 stars Take that, Beano Cook!.......2000-06-30

There are a lot of biographies out there written by people who assume that simple fame warrants public interest. This is not one of them, because Joe Paterno is a truly fascinating man. Success and prestige don't often go hand in hand, but somehow Joe has made it work, and is the reason that Penn State isn't just another big-money school trying to win football games on the backs of exploited kids. If how he does that in this day and age isn't intriguing, I don't know what is. For anyone who has ever turned on a Saturday football game and wondered what possesses the guy in the nerdy rolled-up pants and coke-bottle glasses to keep going, then you have a valid question which this book can answer in a way that will captivate you, page after page. For once, we have a book about football that isn't about football at all--it's about what an extraordinary person can do to a little agricultural school to put a tiny college town on the map in the greatest way possible.

Put a thermometer to the JoePa sentiments in State College and you may be surprised that a fervent admiration that pervades the town, and for good reason. Hey, there has to be some reason we would like a guy enough to make a bean bag doll out of him...give him his own ice cream flavor (Peachy Paterno)...and put his face on mugs...and golf balls. ("Guaranteed to go up the middle three out of four times.") And there has to be something about a guy who would give up a $1.4 million coaching contract with the Boston Patriots to keep a $35,000 job in Happy Valley. The fact is, the guy has integrity that borders on insanity, and that makes him interesting as heck.

On a final note, this is a dangerous book in that it will feed an obsession born of fandom. Be careful with this book. I have a friend, the daughter of Penn State's president, and every year she obliges me by hand-delivering a batch of Santa Joe cookies to the Paternos at the bowl games. Make sure you don't go as far over the edge as I did.

    5 out of 5 stars Great guide.......2007-05-18

This is a great book for beginning Doomers, vets may find it redundant but good for a laugh when reading the multiplayer secrion.

5 out of 5 stars Battle for This Book.......2004-02-02

Going beyond just DOOM, the Primagames Doom Guide towers over the others with utter style. The writers added nice maps, clear strategies with screens from the game, how to get to each secret level, and the book is authorized. If you play Doom, then this is the guide that you should be buying right now.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of Screen Shots and some strategy tips.......2000-01-13

This book has good strategy tips that would be a lot more helpful if they were more complete. The maps are very good and list locations of all items, switches and secret areas (which I often walk by), but not monsters. There are lots of good screen shots, but some are dark in the background...better than the average book. Very helpful, but not worth the money.

1 out of 5 stars not all it was cracked up to be.......1999-09-01

I found the book to be a disappointment, and not overall helpful. I would possibly reccomend it to a person who had NEVER played doom before, but ptherwise don't waste your money

It is very practical and offers the reader tested programs and projects that he or she can implement right away. This book reinforces the reader's learning by presenting useful, end-of-chapter pedagogical resources, including question-and-answer sessions and quizzes, as well as practical exercises that cement and extend the reader's knowledge. 3 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2007-08-09

This book lacks the organization and isn't a very good reference. If you need to learn VBA, this is a good book. If you need to learn and have a good reference, I would suggest you look for another book.

1 out of 5 stars Little useful information........2006-12-28

This books has almost no useful code, and does not go into enough depth to demonstrate how to write any useful code. Fortunately, I found everything I needed on several VBA websites. I wish I had saved the $18.95...

1 out of 5 stars I was disappointed with this book.......2006-10-20

I really was disappointed with this book. It lacks for complete examples and details that show how to implement and use VBA functions, commands, and procedures presented in this book. It was hard for me to implement and use most of the Objects, Methods, Properties, etc presented in this book. The readers need to see complete examples in order to understand how it works.

This book is suppose to be for beginners, however, it is a more descriptive book of VBA objects, methods, etc rather than a teaching book that takes the reader step by step through the learning process.

A lot of typos especially in Excel functions or commands which confused me and wasted a lot of my time trying to find the correct function. I think it is not worth buying it.

      4 out of 5 stars Pretty satisfied.......2006-07-26

I came to this book about two years ago after about a year of VBA programming in Excel. At the time I was mostly hoping to learn how to automate Outlook and Word from Excel. Although I enjoyed the book and found it to be fairly straightforward reading, I didn't walk away feeling I had picked up the skills to succeed with the automation tasks I was hoping to work on.

In coming back to the book on a few occasions since my first reading, I've found the book had more to offer than I absorbed on first reading. The organization is good; the code samples are practical and to the point; the style of writing ease clear and easy to follow.

Still, the book does seem to skip a lot of foundation and details. I'd recommend it as an introduction, with the intent of following up with a book that addresses whatever topics you are primarily interested in learning in greater detail.

2 out of 5 stars Not for a real beginner.......2006-05-28

This author has a clear way of explaining the full realm of VBA using all Microsoft Office applications. The hard part is that its not really for the ABSOLUTE beginner. Another problem is that through each step of his writing he makes the assumption that you have a specific need for that specific portion of VBA's abilities and then goes on explaining it like your just going to be able to apply it to your personal programming needs. The sad part is that the author took no time to create a hands on approach so that you could understand and self apply. I would go with a different beginners guide.

Patterns of growth, power, and conquest, writes cartographic historian Whitfield, can be discerned in changing maps of the world, from that of the medieval Islamic geographer al-Idrisi to the latest Landsat images from NASA. In this scholarly, heavily illustrated survey, Whitfield traces this changing map of the globe from its origins in the ancient Near East to the present. He gives particular attention to fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Europe, when several nations, motivated by reasons of economy and ideology, vied to complete that map with explorations in East Asia and the Americas. --Gregory McNamee

      Book Description

An exploration narrative can be a tale of adventure and endurance, a technical account of navigation and seamanship, or a political history of the overseas empires that were built up in the wake of the explorers.

In New Found Lands, Peter Whitfield takes a different approach. By focusing on the maps that the explorers themselves used, Whitfield reveals how the both the explorers and their patrons understood their expanding world and their place in it, what they were seeking and how they thought they could achieve it, and how they integrated new knowledge into their evolving world view.

The maps in New Found Lands present the geographical ideas of the time, making plain the power that came with increasing technical and geographical knowledge. They also serve as evocative and poignant reminders of the limited knowledge of these explorers. For up until very recent times, as these maps show, there have been areas of the world remaining to be explored and "new found lands" to discover.

This lavishly illustrated book progresses chronologically, starting with the explorers of the ancient world, covering the East, the New World, the Pacific, Australia and the Modern Era. It will enrich our understanding of the voyages of discovery undertaken over the past 2000 years and will delight any map or history lover. Also inlcludes 150 color and black and white maps.

4 out of 5 stars A feast for the eyes.......2000-12-27

As an avid lover of old maps, this book is very prized on my bookshelf. Each page contains large full-color pictures of maps throughout the age of exploration.

Emphasis is placed on showing how not only the trade of map-making progressed, by showing maps throughout their development, but also on the progress of geographical knowledge over time. See the imaginary continents and coastlines of antiquity slowly develop into the familiar face of the world on today's maps.

Adding to the pictures are their backgrounds and the backgrounds of the men, nations, and times that created them. The book is richly informative and offers numerous anecdotes and historical accounts to go along with the maps.

A must have for anyone who enjoys history and geography.

          Book Description

America had fifteen thousand years of history before Christopher Colombus kicked-off centuries of European invasions. This book tells the story of the American Indian nations and their world before the Europeans.. Focusing on people rather than potsherds and arrowheads, this is an original approach for pre-history. Beginning with the immigrants from Asia, through inventions of agriculture, cities and kingdoms, American First Nations are integral to the history of the United States. They explored the continent, pioneered its waterways and mountain passes, cleared forests, irrigated deserts, and ranched its great plains. Invading Europeans justified their conquests by denying the evidence of American Indian civilizations. Using her familiarity with the archaeological remains and remnants, Alice Kehoe builds a fascinating prehistory, highlighting the research puzzles along the way. This book presents an enthralling look at the depth and diversity of American history - before the Europeans and the deadly epidemics they brought with them decimated whole nations. For readers interested in American and Native American history.

4 out of 5 stars A good account of Indians in the United States.......2006-06-27

If you haven't read a book on the American Indians in the last 20 years or so you've missed a real revolution in thought. Scholars now believe that the pre-Columbian Indians were far more numerous than we had previously thought, their civilizations more advanced, and their societies more complex. "Before the European Invasions" focuses on recent information and theories and often debunks the old.

The book is somewhat mistitled as the scope includes mostly the story of Indians living in the United States from the time of their arrival in the Americas up until 1600. The author goes over briefly the various theories as to when and where the Indians came from and their early presence in the United States and then embarks on a description of the ecological regions and Indian cultures in the United States: Eastern woodlands, West Coast, Alaska, Interior West, and Southwest. She ends with a description of the proto-historical Indians of the woodlands up to about 1600. The author even discusses some of the current issues among Indian tribes, the U.S. government, and archaeologists such as the treatment of bones and artifacts.

"Before the European Invasions" is intended for the well-informed general reader and travels without the scholarly baggage of voluminous footnotes. It passes quickly over a vast number of theories, facts, and speculations about the Indians and some subjects get only brief treatment. Its length doesn't permit a detailed examination, but provocative statements and questions abound, especially in the "Research Puzzles" section appended to each chapter. In summary, a good, mind-stimulating and informative read. I wished the book had been longer to permit a more leisurely and thorough examination of many subjects briefly raised.

            Book Description

To be useful, scientific research needs to be explained clearly to others--to colleagues, to administrators, to foundations and governmental bodies, and to the public. This thoroughly revised edition of the classic How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper gives beginning scientists and experienced researchers alike practical advice on writing about their work and publishing what they write. The core of the book consists of a "how-to" guide to writing and publishing research articles for scientific journals, explaining every step of the process, from choosing a suitable journal for your work to presenting the results and citing references. In addition to the information on writing for scientific journals, this book provides additional advice for the scientist of the 21st century:
          • What ethical issues are important in scientific publishing?
          • What should a scientist know about rights and permissions?
          • How does a scientist write a grant proposal, or prepare progress reports for administrators?
          • What should a scientist know to work well with the media, or to write for a general audience? All of this practical information makes How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper the essential guide that scientists need for succeeding in the competitive environment of today.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for publishing scientific results.......2007-07-27

This is the all-in-one reference every newcomer (and experienced) researcher should read to learn how to effectively write scientific papers.

The writing style is extremely clear and concise, presenting the most important concepts and advices in a very straightforward way. Contents are organized in very short chapters, so you can immediately get the picture and start improving your skills. It also has many funny stories and comics that help you enjoy the reading.

In brief: if you want to master in good scientific papers, budget proposals, writing your doctoral thesis, good presentations... This should be your first choice.

Final note for non-native English speakers/writers like me: you will find invaluable references at the end of the book about how to use adequate connectors and expressions, as well as a whole chapter specifically devoted to how to write science in English as a second language.

            5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-05-28

I found this book to be very helpful and easy to read. Great index to find exactly what you need to reference fast. Definitely recommend if you need to write a manuscript or present your data.

            5 out of 5 stars How to Write & Publish . . ........2007-05-12

This is the best book I have ever read about writing and publishing scientific papers. I have all 6 editions and have used them over the years in a scientific communication course I teach to graduate students. The information is so practical, and the use of humor makes what can be a very dry, dull subject enormously entertaining. I recommend this book to anyone, regardless of scientific discipline, who has to publish research papers. The text is very simple and clear -- almost like reading a recipe.

5 out of 5 stars How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper: 6th Edition.......2007-03-09

I think this book is great even if you already have experience writing scientific papers and have published. It certainly opened my eyes to things I should keep in mind when writing for a journal. I'd recommend it to anybody. I'd also like to add that I am currently taking a scientific writing course and the professor mentioned that in his opinion, this is the best scientific writing book he has come across.

5 out of 5 stars More than excellent!.......2006-12-20

I find this book, how to write and publish a scientific paper, is required for all scientists. The book simply covers everything that you need to communicate in scientific field. The book is well-written in rational order and provides answers for every question related to scientific communications. I do recommend also Scientific English by Dr. R. A Day along with this book.
