Book Description
Phinn returns to the Dales for a second slice of Yorkshire life.
Continuing where THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DALE ended, Gervase Phinn begins his second year as a schools inspector in Yorkshire. His colourful cast of characters are now becoming firm favourites - the mostly mad staff at County Hall, the teachers who range from saints to stand-ins, and of course the children themselves who find ways of embarrassing school inspectors with innocent ease. Gervase's colleagues rag him unmercifully about his faraway look whenever the name of Christine Bentley of WinneryNook Nursery and Primary School is mentioned, and he realises it is time to take action - but how to put the question? Gervase Phinn has an extraordinary talent to entertain, and OVER HILL AND DALE will make you laugh out loud.
Customer Reviews:
Over Hill and Dale - Phinn.......2000-06-09
This book will be enjoyed by anyone who has a love of children. In particular anyone with any contact with the teaching profession will recognise immediately the situations recounted in great depth by the author.
As an HMI inspector visiting countless schools, Mr Phinn's perfectly captured descriptions of the children, their teachers and the everyday school activities were a joy to read. His exquisite perceptions of the children put the reader into the classroom observing the joys, laughter and at times touching moments which managed to put a lump into my throat. I was there stifling my laughter as a young boy covers him with paint, I was embarrassed as a harrassed young teacher mistaking him for a care worker asks if he has seen the inspectors yet? and I was reaching for my handkerchief as a young blind child recounts a touching version of her understanding of sight.
A thoroughly charming read, which you won't want to put down.

Book Description
In recent decades the experiences and political struggles of immigrants, exiles, and sojourners have inspired some of the most provocative feature films and documentaries in world cinema. These have sparked theoretical debates about cultural identity, place, and representation in the media.
The thirteen essays in this anthology contribute to a growing interest in the emerging international genre of exile and diaspora films, treating a variety of motion pictures from Europe and the United States in their national and transnational contexts.
These essays examine how contemporary cinema---both fiction feature film and documentary---has imagined the experience of migration and displacement, the struggle for citizenship and cultural belonging, and the encounter and negotiation of different cultures and identities. The authors discuss the ways cinema explores the many contradictions of exile and diaspora---the complicated meanings of home, the exile's nostalgia for origins, the hopes and tragedies of border crossings, the difficulties of belonging to a strange society and being a stranger, and the conundrums of gender for the migrant, especially women's conciliation of different social roles and cultural expectations.
Included are discussions of such well known films as The Crying Game, Lamerica, Journey of Hope, Exotica, Chocolat, Lone Star, and Flying Down to Rio, as well as smaller productions by diasporic or immigrant filmmakers who deserve critical attention, including Seyhan Derin's I'm My Mother's Daughter, Mina Shum's Double Happiness, and Yanina Benguigui's Immigrant Memories: Maghrebi Heritage.
Encompassing different models of intercultural theory, this collection draws on the fields of anthropology, political economy, production and reception studies, feminism, travel writing, and postcolonial criticism and captures the complex, diverse, and continually changing body of diaspora film and its intertextual connections.

Batman and Robin join forces to fight the Joker and more........2003-07-20
This truly is a masterpiece of a masterpiece of a kind. That didn't make since what so ever but I don't get paid to make since... well acutely I don't get paid at all, I'm just some poor guy who has to much free time. If you excuse me while I mope... why God why? I'm so useless! And alone! Oh sob!!! OK I'm done. Hello I'm Joshua Dave Mathewsband and I'm here to recommend "THE MASTERPIECE EDITION OF THE GOLDEN AGE OF BATMAN"! It's kind of pricey but I got it on sale last year for 20$, but if you do find it, it is well worth the money. It comes with the first Batman comic book (it's a reprint) and three other exciting stories of the worlds most famous detective. Although I should worn you that it is not the first Batman comic you see it's the first Batman comic book. Now it's my turn to boar you some history, you see Detective Comics wanted a man named Bob Kane to make a super hero as big as "SUPERMAN" and he did. His name was "THE BAT-MAN" now "BATMAN"! And he appeared in Detective Comics magazine #27. It was only a little six-paged comic that showed the world a strange man who dresses as a giant bat and fights crime. They put one short comic of The Bat-Man in their magazine once a month. They had made a lot of comics of The Bat-Man until Batmans first comic book ever came out. To read the reprint and more of The Bat-Man as in Detective Comics magazines I sagest you buy "BATMAN ARCHIVES VOLUME 1" it has the first Batman comic and 23 other ones, including the introduction of Robin the boy wonder see my recommendation for that product to learn more. Otherwise get "THE MASTERPEIECE EDITION OF THE GOLDEN AGE OF BATMAN"! or get them both.
A look into theDark Knight's history.......2002-12-27
This boxed set is great reading for comic collectors and caual readers alike. The book gives a lot of information on The Dark Knight's early years and shows us what the creators were thiking when they originally developed the character. In additon. the collector's action figure is a great display or play peice and depicts the golden age version of the character. Unlike the Superman or Wonder Woman MEs, the 9 inch Batman figure is articulated and nicely detaled.he even has a golden age batarang to fling at his "foes"... You won't regret picking this masterpiece up!
Would be worth 5 stars if it retailed for less.......2002-12-12
This is a beautiful, if unnecessarily oversized and pricey, package. It consists of a large reinforced cardboard box containing a softcover reprint of Batman #1, an abbreviated hardcover version of Les Daniels' Batman: The Complete History, and a great 9" Mego-style Batman figure, with cloth outfit and the best head sculpt I've ever seen, recalling his first appearance in Detective Comics. The box lid opens like a book, and the arrangement of the items within is very nice, giving them maximum visibility. This great display, however, causes the box to be about twice the size of what it needs to be. And because of its large size, is it really necessary for it to be priced so high? While it looks impressive, this material is honestly not worth the retail price
A must for any Bat-fan.......2001-07-05
This is truly and exceptional collection for fans of the Dark Knight. The replica original comic is wonderful to read and is beautifully nostalgic. The hardbound Daniels'"Golden Age" is the perfect companion but the standout of the group is the 8" mego-like figure based on the original Bob Kane Batman of detective comics. This is absolutely the best Batman figure ever produced and is incredibly accurate in detail right down to the purple gloves. This certainly is a must have for any true disciple of the Dark Knight
...A SUPERSTITIOUS, COWARDLY LOT........2000-08-07
A very nice, if pricey, set. The repro of the first Batman story is wonderfully reminiscent of those oversized reprints from the '70s -- but actually neater because it's the same size as the original. The abridged history of the caped crusader is a nice intro for anyone who doesn't own the other, more complete history book by Les Daniels (a highly recommended purchase, by the way). However, the best reason to get this is, of course, the 9-inch figure representing Bob Kane's original version of the Bat. Of all the Batman figures released over the years, this one has the best cape EVER! It's worthy of the ever-present billowing capes we've seen in the comics throughout the years -- it really can cloak the figure in darkness. COOL! As I say, though, the only drawback is the price for this set. Look for it on sale...

Book Description
As any Flash developer worth his or her salt knows, you’re not tapping all of the program’s power unless you’re taking advantage of its scripting language. Not to worry: With Flash 8’s improved scripting language (which includes a visual interface!) and this project-based guide you don’t have to be a master programmer to do so. In these pages authors
Jobe Makar and
Danny Patterson, use hands-on lessons and simple, step-by-step instructions to translate real-life activities into scripts, in the process demonstrating that scripting is something you already instinctively know how to do. To that end, the authors have provided methodologies and techniques for building nearly 40 real-life Flash 8 ActionScript projects, including sample games, wireless applications, Web sites, and more—all of which will help you work faster and more efficiently. The companion CD contains all of the project files and images you’ll need to complete the book’s lessons.
Customer Reviews:
If I could ratre this book a "-1" stars I would........2007-05-14
I knew something was wrong with this book when I was only on pg 14. It showed an image of the toolbar and some of the tools on it had transversed label names. Obviously the editors and the proofreaderf and the writers were out on a long lunch when that happened. In actionscipting, the coding depends on your the attention to detail. The spacing, the uppercase vs lowercase. Anyway, point being. Some of the test book lessons did not match up with the final lessons on the cd rom. Some code was out of it's place, the book indicated it went in the end, when in reality it went in the middle and I also noticed that their spacing in various methods and functions rendered the code non-functionable. On the disk, the spacing was VERY different. I am an art director who justw anted to brush up on action scrippting during my vacation (yes my vacation). I swear I am considering sending a bill for my wasted time and frustration to Jobe and Danny. I am livid. THANK GOD ADOBE BOUGHT OUT FLASH. Macromedia (Jobe and Danny that means you) should not be allowed to write books ever again. The only happy ending to this story is that I can possibly write this book off at tax time and get my money back. Very disapointed and frustrated.
Just Alright?.......2007-03-19
Book appears rushed, incomplete, and at times translated from another language. Consider this sentence:
"When the user clicks on the target movie clip, call the onPress() method of DraggableRectangle"
Obviously, something, possibly an article -- "it" is missing from the second clause. To someone with intermediate familiarity with AS, this omission is easily negotiated but to a beginner, it could be a major hurdle.
If you can tolerate and survive mistakes like the aforementioned, this book is actually a qualified "not bad" intermediate book. Unfortunately, there isn't sufficient sophistication or depth to really move your work to the next level. You'll learn a few things but this book will probably not remain on your shelf as an essential reference to AS once completed.
great book if you know some flash.......2007-03-14
if you are a flash developer/designer who is comfortable with the basics of flash and actionscript, this book is awesome. confusing topics like listeners and the delegate class are covered well. i really liked this book and recommend it - i've recently recommended it to my brother because i think he understands arrays and for loops and xml, etc but would like to get a better handle on it, he's going to like this book as well.
fyi i also had Jobe Makar's game book(green cover) and liked that as well.
Don't waste your money on this book.......2007-01-12
It's interesting that the book has been panned by experienced Flash programmers. I'm a new Flash developer with previous development experience in other development systems. An expert Flash developer recommended the Training From the Source books. This is my first, and I doubt I'll waste any money on another.
I spent an entire afternoon on lesson 1, the most basic exercise. I did the "Answering Machine" exercise about a dozen times, assuming I was doing something wrong, and was just on the learning curve. The book doesn't show you what the solution should look like. However, there is a file of the solution on the disc.
That didn't work either. I couldn't believe they hadn't tested the solution to lesson 1, so I started debugging my environment, making sure I had the latest flash player, and testing it on other computer systems. Then I checked the Peachpit website referenced in the book to see whether there was any errata explaining the problem and hopefully providing an alternative download so I could see how it was supposed to have been developed. Nope. If it was there, a search on "errata" the author's names, the book title, and various other keyword combinations failed to find it.
The other reviews on Amazon confirmed my worst fears: the hands-on exercises - even the solutions - don't work. I'd rather learn by debugging my own code than waste my time on debugging exercises in a book I paid money for.
It's pretty pathetic when Lesson 1 wasn't tested. I guess the authors were too busy being game development heroes or geniuses to bother checking the crap they produced. Message to Jobe Makar and Danny Patterson: nobody who wastes their readers' time and money is cool. Don't blame QA - you wrote it.
I am not excited about potentially wasting time on lesson 2. I feel I was ripped off of a lot of money for this book. Save your money: don't buy it, and don't assume any of the other Training From the Source Books are a good use of your time or money either.
This book really works !.......2006-08-27
Well, I don't have any intention to convince you to buy this book, but if you are not a lazy person, and need to learn something solid from the root, that's the book for you. I already tried some books which orient us to buit a whole website as a project. But when we try to built our sites, using our ideas, they don't work, just because we have to do something different than theirs, escaping one line out from their recipes that they gave us, and most of these books don't cover everything that we need. Stop with that. Learn actionscript as a challange, not as a cake recipe.

Book Description
More than other Atlantic societies, Latin America is shackled to its past. This collection is an exploration of the binding historical legacies--the making of slavery, patrimonial absolutist states, backward agriculture and the imprint of the Enlightenment--with which Latin America continues to grapple.
Leading writers and scholars reflect on how this heritage emerged from colonial institutions and how historians have tackled these legacies over the years, suggesting that these deep encumbrances are why the region has failed to live up to liberal-capitalist expectations. They also invite discussion about the political, economic and cultural heritages of Atlantic colonialism through the idea that persistence is a powerful organizing framework for understanding particular kinds of historical processes.

this is a MUST HAVE book .... great to refer to as you plow through Mongolian Travel and Adventure Books..... I'm thrilled to own it! Glad it was 'finally' published!
Encyclopedia of Mongolian and the Mongol Empire.......2004-09-26
This is a gem of historical history of the all of the Mongols, when I mean all, I mean all - Western, Eastern, Southern, and Northern tribes from early times to the present. The book is organized alphabetically and references are made so the reader can obtain further information after each topic.
Kudos to C. Atwood in putting this together!
I would recommend this for all Mongols and non-Mongols to crasp the impact of The Mongol Empire!
If you're Mongol, you may even pick up some knowlege about your own tribal lineage.

Book Description
This is the first book to provide a detailed process for planning, designing, implementing, and testing knowledge-based systems for natural resource management. It presents material on all these major aspects of building a deliverable system. Equipped with these techniques, managers and scientists will improve their ability to solve complex resource problems that are multidisciplinary in scope and for which mathematical approaches prove insufficient. Fully describing the various components of these systems, this important work includes discussions on system design, knowledge acquisition, prototyping, knowledge verification and validation, implementation, and system delivery. To further illuminate the material presented, it contains a tutorial on the knowledge-based programming environment PROLOG as well as many examples of expert system development, including one for forest management. Building Knowledge-Based Systems for Natural Resource Management demonstrates how knowledge can be effectively organized and administered, enabling natural resource professionals to respond intelligently to natural resource problems. This book also provides researchers and students with an essential resource for understanding this useful technology.
