Book Description
Bernadino Pavone, Co-Founder, CEO, and President of the world's premier marketing company that specializes in credit repair and is ranked as one of the nation's fastest-growing companies in 2001, has told his life story-from prison to the head of ICR Services-in a new book, Some Saw Mud, I Saw Stars.
This book tells an inspiring story of a young man who in his 20s lived a fast-track life that landed him in prison, but it is also a story of one who refused to give up or lose hope.
Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money!!!.......2006-03-11
Admission of your sins after you've been caught, is not a sign of integrity. Furthermore, he went on to defraud and deceive thousands of people. He simply learned how to be a better crook.
ICR was a complete scam and Bernie was its founder. Which he claims to have thought up while serving eight years in club Fed. He had to go to jail to learn how to be a criminal? Or will that be his next excuse? A fish rots from the head down.
Plenty of people do redeem themselves after prison. However, Bernies last scam shows he is nothing but self serving. Which is what this book is about ... serving Bernies ego!
Where is Bernie Pavone today?.......2006-02-21
A couple years ago, there was a federal investigation into ICR's operations and he was being prosecuted at that time. I am not aware of the outcome regarding his case, but certainly his story in the book was compelling indeed. Facts tell, but stories always sell. Not just any story, but rather good stories.
Ever since the CBS 48 hours report years ago, I wonder if it was true that Bernie Pavone failed to follow federal laws regarding the credit repair industry? Or If it was true that he was responsible for cheating several thousand people or mislead? Or I wonder if the desire of the troubled customers were so strong to clean up credit reports that they failed to read the small print or were mislead by the independent reps selling the credit repair services?
The chief or leader of any organization is always the one to take all the heat or blame mostly. Perhaps his organization, ICR, was out of his control and the employees motivated by incentives or bonuses were compelled to cheat and process credit repair applications unlawfully? Hopefully the ending to this story was a good one.
It must have been tough as the Chief of ICR to make sure every single application was followed as best as possible to the letter of the federal laws and state laws. And imagine as the Chief of the organization being responsible for every single application? Interesting thought anyway.
Spectacular .......2005-08-16
Many people make mistakes in their lives, but when you admit it and make a change, now that's when everyone in today's world could learn a few things. After I completed this read, I was so moved by the story, I decided to make a change in my personal life for the better and it has been working in my favor. Thank you!
Heart Breaking.......2005-08-16
My review of this book is really short and simple. Do anything out of love, and nothing can stand in your way. Mr. Pavone had love on his side and with that, you can reach any height!
Mind Blowing.......2005-08-16
This is an amazing book. To see someone who has acheived their dreams in order to help their family, is enough to inspire me to do it myself.

You don't have to be a Monroe fan to enjoy this book!.......2000-03-11
This is a fascinating collection of stories by a great cross-section of writers. My favorite story was the touching and funny "Destiny" by Patricia Wallace. Ms. Wallace has written numerous outstanding horror and mystery novels, including the Sydney Bryant private eye series.
This offbeat anthology should find a permanent place on many bookshelves.
Book Description
In recent decades, media outlets in the United States-most notably the Internet-have claimed to serve the public's ever-greater thirst for information. Scandals are revealed, details are laid bare because "the public needs to know." In Publicity's Secret, Jodi Dean claims that the public's demands for information both coincide with the interests of the media industry and reinforce the cynicism promoted by contemporary technoculture. Democracy has become a spectacle, and Dean asserts that theories of the "public sphere" endanger democratic politics in the information age.
Dean's argument is built around analyses of Bill Gates, Theodore Kaczynski, popular journalism, the Internet and technology, as well as the conspiracy theory subculture that has marked American history from the Declaration Independence to the political celebrity of Hillary Rodham Clinton. The author claims that the media's insistence on the public's right to know leads to the indiscriminate investigation and dissemination of secrets. Consequently, in her view, the theoretical ideal of the public sphere, in which all processes are transparent, reduces real-world politics to the drama of the secret and its discovery.
Customer Reviews:
Genius.......2004-01-10
Jodi Dean was my professor so I have had the pleasure of becoming very familiar with her work. She (as well as her book,) is eloquent, opionanted, informed, and to sum it all up a genius. Although some disagree with her views everyone cannot help but respect her. She is one of the greatest political scientists of our time. If you read one work on this subject let it be Jodi Dean's.
Important--and fun!.......2003-02-23
This is an original exploration of politics and technology today.
Some readers might disagree with Dean that the public doesn't exist. But all will love her discussions of the "priceless" and "1984" ads, movies, conspiracy theory, Bill Gates, etc. Also, her thorough and clear explanations of the work of Slavoj Zizek make the book really useful.
Book Description
A comprehensive episode-by-episode guide to the third exciting season!
Now in its fifth hit season, Babylon 5--TV's hottest interstellar science fiction phenomenon--has spawned its own series of definitive episode guides! Catch up on all the action, show by show, from the very beginning with the Babylon 5: Season by Season guidebooks.
Babylon 5: Point of No Return begins with a fascinating look at another innovation for the already groundbreaking series--its pioneering use of computer generated special effects. Jane Killick's behind-the-scenes chronicle reveals how effects master Ron Thornton and his Foundation Imaging team made B5 the first TV show to create all of its breathtaking special effects exclusively through computer graphics, from spaceships and planets to galactic battles.
In addition, Babylon 5's third season guide presents a thrilling summation of the series major turning point: the chain of events that would culminate in the devastating Shadow War. And of course, episode-by-episode summaries--with Killick's comprehensive analysis--cover all of the third season's twenty-two shows, including "Matters of Honor," "Point of No Return," "Ship of Tears," and the stunning finale, "Z'ha'dum."
Veteran viewers or first-time fans, relive the adventure--or find out what you've been missing--with the complete companions to Babylon 5!
Customer Reviews:
Item received was not as described.......2006-05-26
The item I received from Amazon is not what is described here. Despite the banner on the front of this book and in the image stating "8 pages of color photographs", the photos were very poor quality black and white photocopies. This was true for all 3 of the Babylon 5 season books that had photos. I am not even convinced that the text in any of the 5 books is not just photocopy as well. I paid full cover price and purchased directly from Amazon. After sending a complaint and asking how to get the correct item, Amazon immediately sent another set. These too were defective black and white photocopies. Although the book itself appears to be interesting, I would buy it from a book store and not purchase it unseen through Amazon.
A Great Guide to a Great Series.......2003-11-21
Babylon 5 was unique in television. The main plot for the entire series was mapped out before the show even started. As a result, it developed a loyal fan base that still loves it.
This book is the third in a series of five episode guides to the series. Covering the third season, it has a separate chapter for each of the twenty-two episodes. Each starts with a plot summary, but then goes into behind the scenes stories and commentaries. Through interviews with cast, crew, and creator J. Michael Straczynski, author Jane Killick is able to give a full picture of what went into each episode. Some of my favorite parts are the stories of bloopers or jokes the cast played on each other. I also find the summaries useful if I'm looking for a particular episode to rewatch.
Starting out the book are two essays. The first provides insight into creating the special effects for the show. While the majority of the time is spent on describing the computer graphics used (something unheard of when the series started), there is also some insight into the traditional effects and the make-up used to create the aliens. The second in an introduction to the third season, painting broad strokes of the story arcs introduced and developed over the course of the season.
Any fan will love to have this well researched book for a behind the scenes look at a wonderful piece of science fiction television history.
Essential Reading for the B5 Viewer.......2002-11-07
The Babylon 5: Season by Season guidebooks are an essential read for fans of the TV series. Containing photos, interviews, essays, and in-depth rundowns of each episode, each book is indispensable for B5 vets and newbies alike. Strongly recommended.
A great book series, but if you are new to the show..........2001-10-24
This is a really good book series for B5 fans. It makes a great companion & fun reading after you have watched each show. But I would recommend it mainly for those that have seen the series & are watching it again. The reason I say that is because it is laced with spoilers all throughout the commentaries. That's fine if you've seen the whole thing already, but it stinks if you are watching it for the first time. If you don't mind that sort of thing...go for it, but this is the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. For a good "non-spoiler" companion guide, I highly recommend The Babylon File: The Definitive Unauthorized Guide to J. Michael Straczynski's TV Series Babylon 5 by Andy Lane (Versions 1 & 2). He shows no mercy sometimes. If he does or doesn't like the show, he let's you know. But it's a blast to read.
Enlightening and fun.......2000-07-31
The book starts with a description of the long road of "selling" B5 to various tv execs seeking partners and funding. Boring? On contrary it offers a rare look behind the curtains and helps to understand why it's so hard to get funding for a truly artistically ambitious tv show like Bab 5, or why most tv drama lacks that ambition. It also gives the readers an idea of how dedicated JMS, Copeland and Netter were to getting this show on air against all odds. The overall wiew on the first season On the other hand can be a bore to those who have already studied the episodes site on the net, although more compact and a must to understanding the continuing story lines that would make Macchiavelli jealous, layers on layers, from scale of individuals to institutions, worlds and the universe. For those new to this complexity and richness it makes the book easier to follow episode by episode.
The episode guide includes a two-page synopsis followed by 4-5 pages of comments from JMS, directors and actors, episode by episode including the pilot of the series, "the Gathering". If these comments would constitute a bigger part of the book instead of about 100 pages, with even more detail and humour the book would be a fiver, but as people were interwiewed years after the first season these kind of things tend to give way for more professional-orientated memories. Still by no means dry or "basic" even for the most educated fans, this book is worth it's price, and more when combined with the series on video, allowing to see the episodes in a new light.

Book Description
Think you have to be a technical wizard to build a great web site? Think again. For anyone who wants to create an engaging web site--for either personal or business purposes--Creating Web Sites: The Missing Manual demystifies the process and provides tools, techniques, and expert guidance for developing a professional and reliable web presence.
Like every Missing Manual, you can count on Creating Web Sites: The Missing Manual to be entertaining and insightful and complete with all the vital information, clear-headed advice, and detailed instructions you need to master the task at hand. Author Matthew MacDonald teaches you the fundamentals of creating, maintaining, and updating an effective, attractive, and visitor-friendly web site--from scratch or from an existing site that's a little too simple or flat for your liking.
Creating Web Sites: The Missing Manual doesn't only cover how to create a well-designed, appealing, smart web site that is thoroughly up to date and brimming with the latest features. It also covers why it's worth the effort by explaining the rationale for creating a site in the first place and discussing what makes a given web site particularly aesthetic, dynamic, and powerful. It further helps you determine your needs and goals and make well informed design and content decisions.
Creating Web Sites: The Missing Manual includes a basic primer on HTML, working with JavaScript, and incorporating services like Paypal's shopping cart, Amazon's associate program, and Google AdSense and AdWords. It delivers advanced tricks for formatting, graphics, audio and video, as well as Flash animation and dynamic content. And you'll learn how to identify and connect with your site's audience through forms, forums, meta tags, and search engines.
This isn't just another dry, uninspired book on how to create a web site. Creating Web Sites: The Missing Manual is a witty and intelligent guide for all of you who are ready to make your ideas and vision a web reality.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely great book!.......2007-04-17
I have been searching for a good, fairly insightful, starter book on what to do to set up a website, that wasn't too advanced or way to boring.
This is it! The author knows his stuff, brings it into the learning forum in such a way that you are excited to read the next section and re-read for additional insights previously completed sections.
I am going to use this book, and will probably buy more by the same author/publisher.
Web Sites: Missing Manuel.......2007-03-08
Some of the introductions are a little dated (i.e. jokes that reference beanie babies, etc.), but the other content of the book is still pretty current. This is a really helpful book for the beginning web designer. It is definitely a good reference to have, espically for design students. This book covers things that appear in the software Dreamweaver. It discusses codes for things such as CSS, HTML, etc.
The perfect book for beginners.......2006-09-08
The book is clear, concise and comprehensive. It covers from how to get a domain name to how to accept credit card payments.I like the emphasis in formating using CSS instead html. This was a new concept for me. The author introduces java scripts and dynamic html. I missed a chapter about how to organize, and keep update the whole web site (sometimes with hundreds of web pages, pictures, icons, etc...). It was one of my first book about the topic and I really think that it's a powefull introductory book.
An enjoyable walk through the essential steps in web site creation........2006-06-29
Title: Creating Your Own Websites
Author: Matthew MacDonald
Publisher: Pogue Press/O'Reilly
ISBN: 0-596-00842-2
Pages: 535 pages
Reviewer: Philip High
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
I'm sure we all have experienced the frustrating incompleteness and illogic of many software manuals. This book is part of an impressive series billed as: "The book that should have been in the box" put out by Pogue Press. It's the first one I have read but I would have to agree with their tag line, and if the others are anything like it I would definitely be interested in checking them out.
Of course a comprehensive set of web building tools doesn't come in one box -- no matter how hard some publishers try to bundle and brand it as such. That's one reason this overview is so handy. It ties together all the major issues in one current (for the moment) volume. A lot of territory is covered here: HTML, style sheets, graphics, tables, frames, site-promotion, merchandising, JavaScript, Audio, Video, Blogs, and more. Obviously there is only room to layout the basics for each of these topics, but the coverage is well selected, to the point, and surprisingly useful. At the same time it isn't an off-putting encyclopedia but an enjoyable walk through the essential steps in web site creation.
For web beginners this is an excellent place to start. Even the introduction is worth reading! The major subjects covered are: creating web pages, making pages look beautiful, putting it online, attracting visitors, making money, and adding frills. These topics and related material are presented in five divisions, each with several chapters. Along the way you'll find plenty of good advice on such things as what software to use, how to choose service providers, and where to go for more information.
Although the book seems to speak to the aspiring beginner, those with experience will probably find it fills in some gaps in their knowledge and serves as a great reference to have on hand. You might especially appreciate it if you have friends or clients who ask you web related questions about things you've done, but not recently, or without much thought. In other words, it can make you look as if you actually know what you're doing -- very handy indeed! For me it was a pleasure just to read a manual that was so well written and contained genuinely useful information, even if some of it was review. Personally, I have been interested in learning more about CSS lately and originally picked up the book for this section alone.
There are two useful Appendixes. "A" is HTML tags. It's a pretty basic list but the descriptions are good and fairly detailed. Appendix "B" is a healthy selection of links that are conveniently grouped by the chapters they relate to in the text. I found this much easier to use than just having them scattered throughout. There is also a note on the inside back cover that reads: "The Missing CD-ROM. -- There is no CD-ROM with this book; you just saved $5.00." It's a clever way to point you to the website, www.missingmanuals.com that contains files referenced in the text, additional information, and updates. Sure it's a gimmick to keep your attention, but it's also a useful feature and an extended digital benefit we've come to expect with our analogue pages. Who needs another disposable CD anyway?

Customer Reviews:
A unique encyclopedia devoted entirely to Jewish mysticism and folklore.......2007-05-10
Rabbi Geoffrey W. Dennis' THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JEWISH MYTH, MAGIC AND MYSTICISM provides a unique encyclopedia devoted entirely to Jewish mysticism and folklore. Jewish esotericism is the oldest continuous occult tradition in the West, but this encyclopedia represents the first comprehensive treasury of such teachings drawing from Jewish scripture, Talmud, Kabbalah and other esoteric Judaic branches. Over a thousand alphabetical entries include extensive cross-referenced notes, plus a complete bibliography and glossary of terms.
A wonderful addition to any library.......2007-01-05
The Encyclopedia of Jewish Myth, Magic and Mysticism provides a much needed accessible reference resource for the crowded field of Jewish mysticism. Although it is an encyclopedia Rabbi Dennis' book is also an entertaining read. It is scholarly in its approach to the material but clearly written for a wide audience. Anyone who enjoys learning about Judaism, mysticism or magic should own a copy. It is a wonderful resource on its own and an invaluable companion for those who are engaged in deeper study.

Product Description
From the introduction: The Jews have been called "the most historical of peoples." They have survived through the centuries and ages, they have migrated to every part of the world, and even under the most difficult circumstances they have contributed to the cultural and social history of humanity. When other nations and faiths have boasted of their rulers and leaders, Jews have prided themselves on their numberless scholars and sages. They have leavened every civilization in which they have lived. They have contributed to every literature as well as their own.
The most vast compendium could not contain all the significant facts about Jewish personalities, defeats, triumphs, migrations, settlements and achievements in scholarship, philanthrophy and the advance of civilization. Hence no single brief work will satisfy the lust for knowledge, the persona preferences, the amour propre of the reader of this or similar volumes. We present a work that is both concise in choice of subjects and in their treatment. No alteration of contents can prevent criticism of exclusions, and, sometimes inclusions, in the text. The general reader will, we are certain, be informed concerning all matters of importance about the Jewish people and their history.

New Encyclopedia of Zionism and Israel........2001-07-27
Just as Israel stands out from the rest of the Middle East in its basically Western orientation, so does scholarship about Israel differ from that about the rest of the region: unlike the fairly primitive state of research elsewhere, Israel studies can match those of any Western stateýas the excellent New Encyclopedia proves. (Itýs ýnewý because it builds on a 1971 edition, The Encyclopedia of Zionism and Israel, edited by the late Raphael Patai, adding about 30 percent more material).
The two-volume work contains major essays on such topics as Hebrew literature, the history of Israel, immigration to Israel (aliya) and U.S.-Israel relations. The allotment of space is sometimes puzzling: why devote over 7 pages to the Zionist Organization of America but just a quarter-page to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee? Does the United Nations deserve 13 pages compared to David Ben-Gurionýs 3? Topics include not just the requisite individuals, institutions, places, and events, but also entries one might not expect: insurance in Israel, Zionism in India, Jewish liturgical music in Israel, and the Israel Aircraft Industries. The volumes are illustrated, mostly with historical photographs of both charm and interest. Although filling only 2 volumes, the New Encyclopedia has about as much information as other 4-volume books (including the Encyclopedia of the Modern Middle East and The Oxford Encyclopadia of the Modern Islamic World).
Middle East Quarterly, December 1996
Richard A. Macales, columnist, "Mac's Facts".......1999-06-18
This two-volume set is an update of an earlier work by the preeminent scholar and Herzl diaries translator Raphael Patai. It lists practically every event, every person of note and every place in modern Israeli history, religion and culture. It contains many rare photographs, including Orthodox leaders at the U.N. and in meetings with Zionists in the 1940s and '50s. Makes a nice companion to the Encyclopaedia Judaica.
Book Description
This revised and updated classic explores the importance of technological innovation in the cultural and economic history of the West. Topics include technology of textile manufacture from primitive times, water wheels and wind mills, clocks and watches, and invention of printing. "Without peer in its field." — American Scientist.

Book Description
The main focus of this book is the study of environmental dynamics in the Arctic, coupled with ecosystem dynamics. Particular emphasis is placed on problems of the composition of the Arctic atmosphere, including minor gases, aerosols and clouds, as well as changes in the composition due to impacts of human activity. Analysis of observational data and numerical modelling results, which characterize the Arctic basin pollution dynamics, and its impact on ecosystems is also provided. Other topics covered include problems of general circulation in the atmosphere and oceans - beginning with the 1930s when the Arctic was regarded as the kitchen of global weather and climate and concluding with the situation today when modern observational data and numerical modelling make for a more balanced view.
