Wow! Phil Hardy has been editing encyclopedias devoted to various film genres for years, but this book on the gangster film is perhaps his most impressive. A companion piece to his Western, science fiction, and horror encyclopedias, this is an extraordinary treat for lovers of crime movies. An oversized book, it contains more than 500 pages on the genre, covering it year by year from the beginning of the sound era until today and, uncharacteristically for Hardy, concentrating half its focus on films from the '60s through the '90s. Hardy and his team have composed hundreds of words on each of more than 1,500 films, considering the rarities of the genre as seriously as the classics, and focusing on foreign as well as English-language films. This is a must for aficionados and novices, those who want to pore over its pages, and those who are looking for a great browse. Big black-and-white stills, 650 in all, illustrate every page of this wonderful, magnificently researched, and tremendously entertaining volume. This is easily one of the best film books of the late 1990s. --Raphael Shargel
Book Description
The newest volume in the definitive film reference series, covering gangster films from Cagney to DeNiro.
Since the initial publication of the first three groundbreaking volumes--Horror, Science Fiction, and The Western--The Overlook Film Encyclopedia series has been deemed the most authoritative, stylish, and compulsively readable film reference series ever. In The Gangster Film, series editor Phil Hardy has created yet again a landmark in film reference.
Included in this lavish volume are critical entries on more than 1,500 gangster films, complete with plot synopses and credits, and 650 black and white photographs to capture the look of this exciting genre. Arranged chronologically, The Gangster Film offers deliciously opinionated and detailed descriptions, statistical information, credits and trivia from early classics such as Public Enemy, Key Largo, Dragnet, and On the Waterfront to contemporary blockbusters such as The Grifters, Chinatown, The Godfather, and Pulp Fiction. Essential, authoritative, and entertaining, The Gangster Film is the guide for serious students of film, film buffs, and home viewers.
"Movie fans will find Hardy's compilation hard to put down."-- The Washington Post Book World
"A definitive year-by-year survey."-- The New York Review of Books
"Vast in scope and loaded with information."-- American Cinematographer
Customer Reviews:
Good, though poorly organized........2003-02-07
At once, this book is amazing in its scope but horribly frustrating in its approach. Unlike a conventional encyclopedia, this voluminous tome orders the films within by year rather than alphabetically. This system makes the book virtually useless when trying to find a particular film at a glance. Sure, there's always the index but that fails miserably when a reader has interest in a film with a foreign title. Translated titles are available in the index, but too many foreign films have multiple titles. To make things worse the index is bereft of directors, stars, or any other means of cross-referencing a movie with which the reader might not be fully familiar. This is a flawed and ultimately ineffective work. (ISBN: 0879518812)

Book Description
The street graphics of modern Egypt reflect three distinct cultures and visual styles: ancient Egyptian imagery, a developing Western international style, and the traditional Arabic calligraphy of Egypt's Islamic majority.
Thousands of years ago, Egyptians carved a pictorial history of Pharaonic culture on their temples, tombs, and monuments. Representations and interpretations of this ancient culture saturate modern Egypt's tourism industry, from hotel signs and theme parks to the souvenirs sold by street hawkers. The development of Egypt's coastal resorts has been accompanied by modern images of beach and party lifestyles, and this new imagery thrives alongside the traditional in stark contrast or startling confusion.
Barry Dawson's photographic record is a colorful source of diverse street images that provide a creative springboard for graphic artists, a visual impression for visitors, and an offbeat pictorial introduction to ancient and modern Egypt. 200 color illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Nice, but too obviously an outsider's view.......2004-01-20
Given the fairly limited audience a book like this would appeal to, we can't have it all, and this is a very good snapshot of modern Egyptian graphic arts, especially advertising. That said, too many of the images are of non-Egyptian products (foreign movies, foreign products, Coke), or images that are otherwise aimed at foreigners (museum passes, souvenir shops, tacky t-shirts, etc). Now obviously there's something to be said about the clash of cultures, but pop-culture savvy Egyptians and long-time residents/travellers will be disappointed by this book. It looks too obviously like the result of a quick tour of the country. Dawson would greatly have benefitted from some advice from some of Egypt's hipper residents.

Abracadabra and 1-2-3! Amaze your friends and stump your parents with mathematical magic tricks. You don't need magician's equipment to perfect each feat; just practice it a few times. Some will turn you into a mind reader: for example, just ask an audience member to roll some dice and stack them. Then, voila! You'll conjure up the total numbers on the hidden dots and tell everyone. Or, guess a word someone has picked from a dictionary. Want to make a little "Pumpkin Pi?" ("Pi," in algebra, is what you get when you divide the circumference of a circular object by its diameter.) Here, no matter what number someone enters into a calculator, the result is always a "piece of pi." Plus: a little card sorcery, mind-boggling magical things you can do with paper, and many more.

Server 2003 for Dummies.......2007-03-09
I guess I am too dumb for this book.
It didn't help me at all with basic information
Annoying.......2006-10-30
This book, like so many, is among the annoying books that pretend to offer everything to a "dummy"
The first couple of chapters look innocent and make you think that you are going to get alot of knowledge out of this book, but as you get to the chapters that are most important, the simplicity and clearity of the text is thrown out the window. He starts using terminology without defining it, doesn't break things down, and is just plain confusing.
The approach is this:
A is for apple.
B is for bat.
E = m c Squared.
The customer looks at the first few chapters and buys the book.

A True Reference for the Rest of Us.......2006-03-30
This is my first review of a book, so please allow me a few mistakes. I am a chemist who is being forced, by work circumstances, to become more of an IT person than I thought possible. I will be administering a client-server system in our laboratory. I needed to find a book that would expand on the very limited knowledge that I currently possess. I found that book in "Windows Server 2003 for Dummies". The first couple of chapters are basic network setups, after that they got more in depth and to the point of what I needed to know. I'm obviously still learning and I use the book as a constant reference. I have since purchased "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 for Dummies". I only hope I find this book as useful.
Does exactly what the title says..........2006-03-08
...it provides a Windows Server 2003 reference for people who are starting from scratch (a.k.a. Dummies). I'm really shocked by the other reviews. This book promises no coverage whatsoever of any exam objectives for Microsoft's exams. I am a, sometimes blunt, redneck from West Virginia (now transplanted to Ohio), and I must say that only a true dummy would buy this book to prepare for an exam. In that light only should the book be condemned (I have a real problem with the whole "for dummies" series as an adult educator myself, but that's another story for another review.), in that a true dummy buying the book is probably making a bad decision anyway - as they do not have the capacity to make an educated decision, since, by definition, a dummy (according to webster: one without intelligence; and intelligence is a lack of the ability to learn) cannot become educated. In the end, the market for the "for dummies" books should be about .001 percent since that's about how many people would be "dummies".
If you are new to Windows servers and networking in general this is a phenomenal book with which to begin. If you are a seasoned Windows veteran, and you buy this book, you might want to consider an occupation that requires little planning and thought. It's obviously for the beginning Windows admin.
In most of my reviews, I try to focus on the book itself and the value it brings, but I had to point out the misrepresentations of the other reviews.
Useless Book .......2005-03-31
I wish they has 0 stars as a choice to rate this book. This book is for someone who has very little experience or who has never installed a server. I usually like the dummies books as they are easier to read and understand but this one was a DUD!!!

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
Civilization takes the reader from the earliest days of human settlement to the civilizations of the New World overthrown by the Spanish conquistadors. After a brief look at humanity's development as monadic hunters and gatherers, the book opens with the crucial step taken around 10,000 years ago when some communities started to ultimate plants. The settled villages of these early farmers were the forerunners of the complex cities and highly sophisticated cultures that were later to flourish in the emergent civilizations around the world. Focusing largely on the world's key civilizations in each time period, the book begins with the primary civilizations in Mesopotamia, India, Egypt, and China, and from there to Greece, Rome, and their contemporary cultures, culminating in the settlements in the Americas. Illustrated with revealing photographs, artworks, and maps throughout, Civilizations brings alive the ideas, events, and people of earlier cultures whose achievements have laid the foundations of our present-day world.
Customer Reviews:
Smooth!.......2004-01-13
The Indological spinning machine just never stops. The book perpetuates the same old Eurocentric cliche by presenting these people as invaders even though no hard evidence exists. Ashoka is fashioned as at least part Greek!
A couple of quotes for illustration purposes (page numbers pertain to the hardcover edition):
"As the Indus citites disappeared around 1800 BC horse riding
Indo-Aryan nomads, keeping cattle and worshipping warlike gods,
infiltrated the northwest and swelled the ranks of the rice farmers who were beginning to penetrate the forest of the Ganges (sic!) valley and that of its great tributary, the Yamuna (p.133)."
"The Indus script will probably never be deciphered-the texts that
survive are too short, giving little to work on. In addition we do not know what language the Indus people spoke-although most scholars think it was an early form of Dravidian languages now spoken in southern India (p. 66)."
The Nordic super race of Aryans are now called the Indo-Aryans.
However, they are still riding horses and worshipping "warlike" gods. Referring to Vedic Gods as "warlike" is mischievous and motivated. Indra, Agni, Soma, Varuna, Marut were invoked to ensure peace and prosperity. Only some hymns to Indra and Agni mention conflict situations; many times with a mythicaldemon Vrata, and some real enemies, the Dasa/Dasyus. Putting the two quoted paragraphs together, the reader is compelled to deduce a scenerio of violent invasion.
Very smooth indeed! Read this book if you are a British high school kid at the bottom of your class.
A well illustrated introductory overview.......2004-01-11
This large-format book, co-published by the BBC, provides an attractive basic introduction to the world's major civilizations from prehistory to the era of medieval Europe. The text, while clearly written, is somewhat patchy in its coverage. For example, the authors devote significant attention to New World civilizations including those of coastal Peru and the Mississippi valley, but leave out comparable societies in sub-Saharan Africa. Interspersed among the historical accounts are special sections that briefly discuss stone tools, pottery, water and intensive agriculture, copper and bronze working, the beginning of writing, settlements, tombs and burial practices, warfare, iron technology, alphabets and developed writing, coinage and media of exchange, slavery, recreation, mathematics and measurement, ships and navigation, civil engineering, temples, astronomy and calendars, textiles, and medicine. The numerous illustrations, generally well presented, include many striking images that will be new to most readers. The simple maps often lack sufficient detail.
Beautifully written overview, some omissions, etc........2001-09-29
The first clue that this is not a reliable reference was that it has no publication date. The printing technology indicates it was published within the past 20 years, and the cover refers to a book that has not yet been published in 2001, but I found nothing else.
Omission is also the most common defect inside. Regarding the sudden appearance of agriculture in Japan (500 BCE), there is no mention of the modern Japanese from Korea displacing the older civilization that was probably related to the Ainu. The fine chronology in front mentions independent early development of agriculture in New Guinea, but it does not appear in the text. The idea that evidence of the caste system has been found by Indus archeology is important enough to warrant a little information about the evidence, but none is provided; it should appear in "A Peaceful Realm", whenever that is published. I think they are trying to avoid any possible controversy, but of course that endeavour always fails. I could have used a map showing the land with the sea level at 10000 BCE level, when Japan was connected to Asia, England and Ireland to Europe, and the Black Sea wasn't.
I was looking for something about India from 1500 to 600 BCE, since Jane McIntosh seems to have expertise in the Indus civilization, but found nothing. That, however, may simply indicate there is no archeological evidence. (Hindu nationalist "archeology" notwithstanding.)
Some details seem at odds with other recent mainstream sources. I would not really trust any single item in this book without checking another source. Perhaps that is an inevitable result of squeezing world history into a short book, probably on a tight schedule, but it is why I gave it four stars instead of five. The larger matters, meriting two or more sentences, are probably accurate within the limit of current knowledge.
The Eurocentric viewpoint is evident, but somewhat muted compared to other world histories. That too is probably inevitable because history is determined by the available evidence even when it is not dictated by the winners. This is an excellent and beautiful short overview, contains superb maps, and includes many fascinating insightful sidebars. Just remember to write in the year of publication.
Book Description
Historical anthropology: critical exchange between two decidedly distinct disciplines or innovative mode of knowledge production? As this volume’s title suggests, the essays Brian Keith Axel has gathered in From the Margins seek to challenge the limits of discrete disciplinary epistemologies and conventions, gesturing instead toward a transdisciplinary understanding of the emerging relations between archive and field.
In original articles encompassing a wide range of geographic and temporal locations, eminent scholars contest some of the primary preconceptions of their fields. The contributors tackle such topics as the paradoxical nature of American Civil War monuments, the figure of the “New Christian” in early seventeenth-century Peru, the implications of statistics for ethnography, and contemporary South Africa's “occult economies.” That anthropology and history have their provenance in—and have been complicit with—colonial formations is perhaps commonplace knowledge. But what is rarely examined is the specific manner in which colonial processes imbue and threaten the celebratory ideals of postcolonial reason or the enlightenment of today’s liberal practices in the social sciences and humanities.
By elaborating this critique, From the Margins offers diverse and powerful models that explore the intersections of historically specific local practices with processes of a world historical order. As such, the collection will not only prove valuable reading for anthropologists and historians, but also for scholars in colonial, postcolonial, and globalization studies.

Introduction.
ÂAgyemanÂ's advocacy for just sustainability effectively addresses the equity deficit of mainstream sustainability. In his conclusion, he suggests a number of strategies that could be of use to those of us in the design community. One of these is the concept of an Â`environmental space,Â' built on the idea of a sustainable community place. In this matrix, not only are traditional environmental resources considered but also included in the equation are social and economic entitlements. Environmental space analysis is exactly the kind of hybrid problem that design professionals commonly work with. This creative reframing of urban space and social justice issues is a strategy that might well be duplicated in rethinking our course projects and other scholarly pursuits.Â
Journal of Architectural Education
ÂA lively and thought-provoking text, with informative case study examples, which allows the reader plenty of opportunity to follow AgyemanÂ's reasoning and analysis.Â
Journal of the American Planning Association
"Covering both theory and practive, environmental organizations are indexed according to their commitment to justice and/or sustainability principles as set forth in their mission statements. Examples illustrating broad issue categories of successful projects that exemplify just sustainability enhance the discussion."
Choice, recommended
ÂJulian Agyeman once again pushes us all to think more critically about how to integrate two important political and intellectual projects. This book is at the cutting edge of research on sustainability and environmental justice. Agyeman has set the standard for the next generation of studies on these critical challenges.Â
David Naguib Pellow, co-author of The Silicon Valley of Dreams
"Worth the effort."
In Brief
"Julian Agyeman has provided a theoretical and empirical foundation for making environmental justice a central focus of sustainability. He lucidly demonstrates both the rationale and the agenda for a 'just sustainability' that is not 'just' about environmental sustainability. In mapping this new territory, Agyeman has made an important contribution to scholarship that will also be valued by practitioners."
Mark Roseland, author of Toward Sustainable Communities: Resources for Citizens and Their Governments
Popularized in the movies Erin Brockovich and A Civil Action, Âenvironmental justice refers to any local response to a threat against community health. In this book, Julian Agyeman argues that environmental justice and the sustainable communities movement are compatible in practical ways. Yet sustainability, which focuses on meeting our needs today while not compromising the ability of our successors to meet their needs, has not always partnered with the challenges of environmental justice.
Sustainable Communities and the Challenge of Environmental Justice explores the ideological differences between these two groups and shows how they can work together. Agyeman provides concrete examples of potential model organizations that employ the types of strategies he advocates. This book is vital to the efforts of community organizers, policymakers, and everyone interested in a better environment and community health.

Linking EJ and Sustainability.......2006-03-26
The divide between environmental justice activists and sustainability advocates and practitioners is not only unproductive but unnecessary. Julian Agyeman's book "Sustainable Communities and the Challenge of Environmental Justice" demonstrates the prospects of partnership between these often disparate activist groups. By linking environmental justice and sustainability, Agyeman clearly makes the case that environmental quality is inextricably linked to social equity-and that one cannot be achieved without the other. Bringing these two ideas together, Agyeman calls for joined-up thinking in approaches to public policy and planning to achieve what he calls `just sustainability'-a true sustainability agenda that incorporates both social justice and environmental protection.
In his book, Agyeman examines both the history and theory of environmental justice and sustainability. He demonstrates the prospects for linking these two policy areas by providing a case study of a Boston-based environmental justice NGO, Alternatives for Community and Environment (ACE). ACE has successfully bridged the divide between environmental justice and sustainability through many of its projects and programs.
For anyone interested in social justice, environmental protection and quality, and advancing principals of sustainability, Agyeman's latest book is a must read. He offers important insight and a vision for `just sustainability,' which will enhance all of our lives.
