When my son and his friend sat down to this book, I couldn't tear it away from them! They kept looking at the vivid pictures and reading over and over the text. They were really transfixed. I can't say how quiet the house was for about a half of an hour. They loved it!

      Book Description

Since cinema's earliest beginnings, there has been friction between producers and directors. Shady accounting practices, which favored the distributors at the expense of the filmmakers, were all too common, causing many filmmakers to form independent companies to make and distribute their own product. This book examines six such low-budget exploitation companies-Associated Distributors Productions, Filmgroup, Hemisphere Pictures, American General Pictures, Independent-International Pictures, Dimension Pictures, and the author's own American-Independent Productions. A brief history of each company, laced with quotes from the company's principals, is presented, followed by a filmography that lists all known credits for that company.

I have read many books on Craps and this is one of my favorites. Very easy to read and full of good techniques for realistic play. Combine this book with Schoblete's Five-Step Advantage-Play method and you will be a powerful player.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book for your collection. You won't be disappointed. Also, whatever books you read, download wincraps and use the free software to master your play. It really helps. [..]

4 out of 5 stars HOW TO NOT HITCHHIKE HOME FROM VEGAS.......2002-11-29

This comprhensive book is insistant on teaching a conservative method of craps and ignoring, indeed vehemently disdaining, the more tempting and colorful craps bets that the author proclaims to be money loser tbat glitter like tempting gold coins on the craps table. These and other tips are forcefully ingrained into the reader until they are nearly mantra-like in the mind. Still, by the time I arrived at the craps table I found myself wishing I could reach for this book to help me out with a bet or a question. I don't think the dealers and other players would have appreciated my referring to a "How To Play Craps" paperback in the middle of a roll. So later I read the book again and I'm still referring to it. Only complaint; the depiction of women as less than perfect craps players. I'm a less than perfect craps player. My first roll went flying off the table and sailing across the room like I was throwing darts. The author attributes such a wild throw to women and often refers to them as some kind of good luck charm.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for anyone looking to learn and win Craps........2001-12-12

I liked this book so much, I usually keep two copies just in case
I loose one. Just bought another copy again this year to give to another friend, thats about the fifth copy given away in the last three or four years. (For the money), I'll guarantee the only way you could not win your investment back is if you stood at the craps table with you eyes closed. The book is straight forward but not dry with just a touch of humor. It explains every thing you should know, or could want to know about Craps,
yet is extremely easy to read, and hardly even a half inch thick.
I've read the book several times from cover to cover, and wouldn't think of going near a craps table without first brushing through the book one more time...

          1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Book.......1998-09-12

This book is a waste of money. The only useful information covers the rules of craps and how to play. The cover promises 25 systems for winning money, but in fact they are mostly variations on each other. None of them are worthwhile systems.

The whole book is repetitive (I think the author just needed to pad things out so you didn't realize you were being ripped off). And the sexist rubbish gets old after a while too.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good for general Flash skills.......2006-05-17

This is a PeachPit Press "Visual QuickPro Guide"--similar to their "Visual QuickStart" training book series, but aimed at more experienced users. The series uses a task-based training approach, teaching skills through short step-by-step exercises. This approach has some major drawbacks for me, although this particular book seems to have dealt with some issues fairly well. My first complaint is that task-based training tends to focus too much on quick, "surface" results without really giving an understanding of what is happening and why it works. This makes it difficult to apply skills effectively in future situations, or to know when they ought to be applied. A task-based organization also makes it difficult to use a book as a reference, since information is dispersed throughout the exercises.

I was pleasantly surprised with Macromedia Flash 8 Advanced in many ways. First, I found that the chapters had a good mix of theoretical instruction and practical exercises. Almost every exercise was accompanied by an explanation of topics: what might be new to Flash 8, how the techniques might be important in a larger context, and an overview of how they work. There were a lot of explanatory sidebars and tips that offered very useful, relevant information. I was also pleased with the indexing, and I was able to find information on several topics as I worked. Most of the step-by-step instructions were very general, giving a basic process without getting sidetracked into specific projects.

Overall, I found that this book does just what it claims to do: it gives good, quick explanations of some advanced Flash topics and skills, such as external communications, sound and video, and dynamic content, as well as complex handling of things like movieClips, text, and buttons. It does not offer much in-depth discussion on any topic, and it does not focus on any area of Flash development specifically, but it takes a very broad approach to expanding Flash skills. I should particularly mention that I wouldn't recommend the book to someone trying to learn actionscript, since the actionscript in the book lacks the depth or focus that can be found elsewhere (O'Reilly's Actionscript for Flash MX), and information is dispersed throughout the book. It also does not really cover Flash components. I would recommend it to Flash users who want to expand their general skills and (especially) keep current with some of the growing capabilities of Flash. The book also includes a CD with working files for the exercises and a trial version of Flash 8.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for those learning actionscript.......2006-05-16

I really enjoyed this book. It goes in depth in covering the actionscript language for Flash 8, and starts off at a relatively slow pace so you don't feel overwhelmed. My only complaint is that it relies a lot (at least in the beginning) on using the script assist mode which I think is a waste of time for those trying to LEARN actionscript. In it's defense, the book weans you off it as it goes along, and I can see someone with no actionscript experience finding that extremely helpful. Knowing a decent amount of actionscript before reading this, I found it a bit annoying but like I said, it fades out of that as the book goes on. Great for learning the newer way to code, and gives a good basis to really use Macromedia Flash to it's full potential.

          Book Description

Even as interest in the powerful, often tragic history of Native America grows, many books continue to perpetuate long-standing misconceptions of the past as well as the romantic steretypes often popularized today. Readers can now rely on Encyclopedia of North American Indians for an authentic and often surprising portrait of the complexities of the Native American experience. Written by more than 260 contemporary authorities, the volume features many Native American contributors - including eminent writers, tribal elders, scholars, and activists - with voices as distinct as their subjects, offering a deeper and more informed appreciation of American Indian life, past and present. Illustrated with many rare photographs, the Encyclopedia features articles on subjects such as mound builders, reservations, cigar-store Indians, child rearing, powwows, boarding schools, museums and collectors, dreams, the occupation of Alcatraz, and the impact of American Indian civilizations on Europe and the world. Contemporary topics include gambling, sports mascots, alcoholism, urban Indians, and the status of women. Biographies illuminate not only famous chiefs and warriors but an enormously diverse group of historical figures, such as Pauline Johnson, a Mohawk who becme the first American Indian woman to publish poetry; Charles Curtis, a Kaw Indian who served as vice president under Herbert Hoover; and "Chief" Bender, an Ojibwa who played and coached professional baseball and is lauded in the Baseball hall of Fame. Covering Arctic to southeastern peoples, separate articles on more than one hundred major tribes - from Abenaki to Zuni - discuss community origins, rituals and beliefs, social organizations, and present-day life.

          4 out of 5 stars A fine reference........2001-09-05

I don't know that it is exhaustive; I'm sure that there is information one might want that isn't to be found here, although I can't think of any examples off the top of my head. And I can't vouch for its veracity; I haven't the competence in the subject matter. Certainly, it is a marvellous reference for someone like me, who has little other knowledge of the subject, and wants a place to begin in gaining such knowledge.

The style of the entries varies considerably, as one might expect of a book that is a collection of entries by various authors; some of them seem very straightforward and mainstream in their approach, others are clearly written by activists seeking to balance centuries of European-oriented history with their own opposite cultural perspective. All are at least reasonably well-written, however, and quite enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference work.......2000-11-07

"Encyclopedia of the North American Indians" is probably one of the best reference works of its type for any subject. The entries are clear, concise and highly informative and there are a large number of useful photographs and illustrations. It covers all relevant subject areas connected to the Native Americans: history, literature, culture, customs and language, politics and contemporary issues. By itself it is a highly informative book, yet it also serves as a vehicle for further study of more specific subject matter; in this sense, it is very helpful that all entries include the names of their authors and that biographical information is also provided. The further reading lists are also very helpful. Anyone even remotely interested in Native Americans has to have this valuable resource on his/her bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference for Native American studies........2000-03-05

Over 260 contemporary authorities on North America's original inhabitants and their descendants make this encyclopedia truly worthy of the name. Contributors are themselves from a wide variety of Indian nations. Typical entry titles are "Food and Cuisine", "Jim Thorpe", "Origins", "Urban Indians", and "Women". An invaluable reference for any library, or for that matter an individual who wants to take that first step into researching their own Native American Roots as did one individual who attention I brought this item to. I have a back ground in Library and information studies with two advance degrees in that area which I think makes me feel qualified to say that everything that one wants is not on line and 20 years from now when the world have become gridlock with electronic noise which is really nothing more than useless or worse yet incorrect or misleading electronic information this could still sitting on your self. One of the things I like to do is test drive a reference tool by asking a typical reference question which I say with kind of smirk knowing that the only typical reference question is directional and the answer involves pointing down the hall to the men's or women's rest room. So since I lived for many years in South Central Wisconsin I have decided to find more About the Black Hawk wars since the route of the retreat for Chief Black Hawk was through what was to become 13 years later the University Of Wisconsin Campus. Since the item is arranged in dictionary format (With many Illustrations and photographs, and Maps) I simply turn to page 76-77-78 to a signed article by Roger Nichols of the University of Arizona. Marktaineshekiakiak 1767-1838 (Sauk War Leader and Spokesman): The article is concisely written on level which would make it accessible to a high school student but at the same time useful to a graduate student who might chose to use the article as an access point to a much wider area of Interest as would be my case due to my interest in both social economic and military history as in it starts with the individual and moves to the broad social an economic context. Encyclopedia of North American Indians: Native American History, Culture, and Life from Paleo-Indians to the Present in addition supplies multiple access points through a general index; cross references, and in many cases furthers reading lists. Since I have written for number Encyclopedias over the years I most particularly like the idea of the articles being signed and the contributors being listed. Really a good reference tool works like The sighting scope on a large telescope: it bring you into an large And you can focus with as much detail as the granularity of the data will allow. I once wrote a paper on that but that another story. 756 Pages, Appendix, Index Maps, B/W Photographs, Paintings, Drawings.

Considering this volume is a mere 668 pages, it does a remarkable job of covering the major concepts and facts of biology, human anatomy, chemistry, physics, astronomy, Earth sciences, meteorology, environmental sciences, and engineering. Not surprising, as it was written by the New York Public Library staff who know what questions are most frequently asked by a knowledge-hungry public.

The ultimate test of such a reference volume is scrutiny of areas with which one is intimately familiar, then reading up on areas about which one is woefully ignorant. This book passed both tests: The biology chapter was sound (though I wanted much more information about evolutionary principles), and the section on particle physics was informative. Even if you already have a collection of several thousand books covering most of the sciences (like myself), this is a handy reference. And if you're a student or want access to a lot of scientific knowledge in the smallest possible non-digital package, this resource is essential for those times when you simply can't get to the library.

              1 out of 5 stars Untrustworthy.......2004-06-07

The book lost immediatly credibility for me when the first thing I looked up contained a serious factual error. The biographical entry for Alan Turing in the Computing section states that he was American, whereas he was in fact British.

Even if this were the only error in the whole book, how can you trust a book that so immediatly shows itself to be flawed.

2 out of 5 stars Don't believe everything you read.......2002-11-21

While I love the concept of this book, my personal experience was that I flipped, more or less randomly, to four different pages and found errors on EVERY page. Perhaps that was just rotten luck, but it makes me suspicious of all the answers in the book. I think you'd be better off looking at a reference that's written by experts, rather than generalists. Buy a copy of the Encyclopedia Britannica CD-ROM.

              4 out of 5 stars Well, it's big..........2002-05-09

...and fun to flip through. And the section on computer science has a handy ASCII chart. Really, isn't getting this sort of spotty, high-level and often outdated scientific information exactly what the Internet is good for? (Do you know that the Internet "has now grown to possibly 2 million host computers all over the world?" - The NYPLSDR does.) If you think a random, off-line, walk through the science tree sounds like fun, get this book. I do and i did and i'm satisfied.

              5 out of 5 stars What a great book.......2002-02-24

This is a terrific book. Practically every other sentence is a statistic! I love the big list of discoveries and inventions, which dates back to the discovery of fire!
I love the huge section on computer science, amazing book! worth ten times the price!

4 out of 5 stars Handy reference book for educational purposes........2001-06-12

Anyone who is in the sciences, especially the biological sciences, know that the information being discovered it growing at an exponential rate. This makes it incredibly difficult to write a textbook for science, since one way or another, you are going to miss recent knowledge which may not be widely available yet. It is also difficult to decide what science is important to learn. This is one of the major problems in developing science educational standards that all students between K-12th grade should be expected to learn. I am inclined to think that purchasing references books such as this fine example, would almost be preferable to buying textbooks that will be out of date within six months. A reference manual such as this is not intended to be used for reading straight through to gain information on one particular science. Rather it acts as a basic foundation from which to springboard science knowledge. The concept of recommending current reference books, distributing science journal papers and using the vast amount of science knowledge now available on the web is an idea that has been used at the college level for several years. It is now a good idea to extend this practice to the junior high and high school level, rather than attempting to cram textbooks full of scientific information which may or may not be valid and useful to students by the time they complete the class.

My main objections to this reference book are two. First, for most deaf students (and for nondisabled students too) reseach has demonstrated that the more visual information given in terms of pictures, graphics, photographs, mathematical equations, etc., the more likely students will remember science. This book could definitely use more pictures and graphics, and it could definitely use color for enhancing learning. This particular reference would be great for on-line, especially if the New York Public Library was willing (or Macmillan) to keep it up-to-date...pictures, graphics, and photographs could easily be scanned to make the information more potent to the learner. The other objection is the placement of a large field of study, Neuroscience, in the biology section and it is given barely a nod, when it is as vital to our understanding as genetics is. Even though Neuroscience is considered to be a rather new field, its impact on medicine and behavioral sciences is too large to be dismissed. Perhaps the publishers will rectify this error the next time around.

Otherwise, I find this to be an excellent resource, both for me and for those I teach. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh
