Book Description
In THE CONQUEST OF LABOR, Curtis J. Evans offers the first biography of Daniel Pratt (1799-1873), a New Hampshire native who became one of the South's most important industrialists. After moving to Alabama in 1833, Pratt started a cotton gin factory near Montgomery that by the eve of the Civil War had become the largest in the world. Pratt became a household name in cotton-growing states, and Prattville--the site of his operations--one of the antebellum South's most celebrated manufacturing towns.
As Evans shows in his painstakingly researched work, Pratt quickly adapted to his new region. He entered Alabama's political arena in the 1840s as a forceful advocate of southern industrialization and economic diversification, employed slaves as well as southern and northern whites in his factories, supported the Confederacy, served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1861 to 1863, and played an important role in Alabama public life until his death.
Based on a rich cache of personal and business records, Evans's study of Daniel Pratt and his "Yankee" town in the heart of the Deep South challenges the conventional portrayal of the South as a pre-modern region hostile to industrialization and shows that, contrary to current popular thought, the South was not so markedly different from the North.

First professional biographical study of Daniel Pratt.......2001-12-22
An easy to read book with a tremendous amount of detail not only about Daniel Pratt and his business but about the town of Prattville that was named for him and the inhabitants of that town during the time period from 1835 until the 1870s. Exhaustively researched, footnoted and indexed this book is a treasure for all who want to see a view of the South contrary to the popular agarian stereotype. Historians as well as genealogists will find this a wonderful resource.

A Heart Warming Story about a Wonderful Man.......2003-09-10
This is one of the most wonderful books that I have ever read.
I must admit, Brook Berringer was a hero to me growing up.
I have always liked him as a Quarterback, but after reading the book, I realize that the way Brook lived his life and accepted God as his savior and higher Power.. it's the way I want to live my life. He was the most wonderful, caring, kind hearted person.
The way he held his head up high when the chips were down was amzing. He will always be a great hero to me and I absolutely recommend this book to everyone who is wanting to have someone to look up to.
Great book about very Special Person.......2002-01-20
I can't believe nobody reviewed this book so I'll take a crack at it. Brook Berringer was one of the greatest Nebraska quarterbacks ever and he was really considered a back up. Sadly his life was cut short in an airplane accident. I haven't talked to anyone here in Nebraska that doesnt know where they were when they heard, he had that much of an impact on everyone. The book does talk about his football days but I think more importantly it shows how he came to find God and how his faith helped him through trying times. It is a very moving book and it is very inspirational, it will bring a smile to your face and make your eyes well up in tears. I hope you'll read this book if only to learn how good of a man he was and maybe you'll find a little comfort in knowing God will always be there when you are ready to accept him.

Book Description
arsenalpulp.com :
Ten years ago, Faith Popcorn declared "the end of shopping" in her bestselling book The Popcorn Report. But from the looks of things, shopping is as pervasive as ever; we are a culture obsessed and beguiled by the desire for consumer goods.
Journalist and shopping pundit Pamela Klaffke documents the history of shopping, from a time when cattle were currency to the current age of contemporary shopping phenoms like eBay.
Topics covered include:
• The history of shopping malls and department stores
• The evolution of retail design
• Inventions that made shopping easier: the cash register, the shopping cart, the bar code
• Information on the largest fashion retail chain (The Gap), the largest retail firm (Wal-Mart) and the world's largest mall (West Edmonton Mall)
• Shopping meccas and customs from around the world
• The dark side of shopping: kleptomania, shopping addictions, anti-consumerism
• The myths: Men Who Hate Shopping and Women Who Love Shoes.
Full of fun and informative sidebars and photos, Spree demonstrates that how we shop explains a lot about who we are.
Customer Reviews:
I wondered why shopping was so important.......2007-01-15
This is a good read, certainly for those interested in history. It was a bit light and wasn't helpful in terms of marketing or research, but interesting none the less.
How inventions in modern history have transformed the shopping experience.......2006-07-03
Journalist, culture columnist, and avid shopper Pamela Klaffke presents Spree: A Cultural History Of Shopping, which covers the ritual of purchasing and its evolution from "need" to "want" to "sport". Spree covers how inventions in modern history have transformed the shopping experience, from cash registers and shopping carts to the online shopping revolution; Spree also examines cultural differences in shopping around the world, from American malls to Parisian arcades. Black-and-white photographs, sidebar anecdotes, and a wealth of research presented in a cheerful narrative style make Spree more fun to read than an trip to the mall - also more educational and very likely less costly!
Spree. Whee!.......2005-08-16
I picked up Spree; A Cultural History of Shopping thinking it would be a quick and enjoyable read. Enjoyable, yes. Quick, no.
For such a small book (trade paperback, 230 pages including an excellent bibliography and index), Spree is packed with more information about shopping than you would have imagined.
Canadian author Pamela Klaffke examines shopping from a multitude of angles, taking only a few pages at most for each topic. She really knows how to distill information down to the basics, while remaining informative and entertaining. Learn about Muzak, malls, Tupperware, infomercials, pawn shops, mystery shoppers, dysfunctional shopping, mall walking, and more. My favorite chapter is Shopping and the Media, which examines how shopping is portrayed in movies, television (sitcoms and game shows), and music.
The text is interesting enough, but in the wide side margins of many pages are additional tidbits, such as a list of celebrity shoplifters, a list of celebrity cheapskates (Katie Couric!), and the evolution of Buy Nothing Day.
Great to browse through or to read from cover to cover.
Entertaining.......2004-02-17
Spree is a fabulous and fun book. Whether you're a trivia buff, curious shopper, or just want a little defense of your favourite pasttime, this is a great book for understanding and appreciating all that is shopping. Klaffke's style is witty and sharp, and the book is consumable in short bits - perfect for waiting in long line ups.

useless book.......2007-07-14
this book is useless. It talks about everything which is outdated and nothing it talks about is detailed. It's like a sales person talking about tech stuff.
You're in the wrong place.......2007-02-03
I assume you're here, reading this review because you are looking for ways to promote your website, and the title of this book hit that mark for you.
Assuming this to be true, do yourself a favor. Go over to Amazon's listing for "How to Use the Internet to Advertise, Promote and Market Your Business or Website with Little or No Money" by Bruce C. Brown. It is a million times the book this one is, and the reviews that are already in place there will more than convince you.
Nice Pin Point ...........2007-01-10
THis is a very easy to read book, with some examples, some times i wish those were more detailed but they are good... it PIN POINT the clue points (sorry for so many points ) to have more traffic in your page and to correct most of the mistakes made in the desing stage. Bring this idea to my mind... "Web Designers are not the best web Traffic designers for a page " so read this book is a good starting poing....
The info more 2001 than 2006.......2007-01-09
Most of the text are based on how the internetcommunity looked in the beginning of 2000 or 2001. Quite a lot of the facts are actually false today and makes you more harm than good.
I would definitely not recommend this other than a reference "how companies thought of Internet in the beginning of 2001".
The book is too generic. .......2006-03-17
This book has the look, the feel and the content of being designed for taking advantage of absolute beginners in Internet Marketing.
Since beginners do not have much knowledge about the subject, they will not be able to protect themselves from a wasteful expense when purchasing this book.
Why is this book not worth the money? Because if it were a textbook on cooking, it would describe all the ingredients, but not say anything about correct proportions, the order of cooking, the temperature and the time.
One will not become an Internet Marketing Chef by reading this book.
Book Description
Cardinal Richelieu is one of the best known and most studied statesmen in European history; his Spanish contemporary and rival, the Count-Duke of Olivares, one of the least known. The contrasting historical fortunes of the two men reflect the outcome of the great struggle in seventeenth-century Europe between France and Spain: the triumph of France assured the fame of Richelieu, while Spainâs failure condemned Olivares to historical neglect. This fascinating book by the distinguished historian J. H. Elliott argues that contemporaries, for whom Olivares was at least as important as Richelieu, shared none of posterityâs certainty about the inevitability of that outcome. His absorbing comparative portrait of the two men, as personalities and as statesmen, through their policies and their mutual struggle, offers unique insights into seventeenth-century Europe and the nature of power and statesmanship.

Hmmmmmm......................2002-04-10
This book is very interesting, contrasting 2 execptional men. It's a very easy book to read, although at times, it's slow.
Readable and interesting........2002-02-14
This book is a very interesting comparative study of two relevant statesmen of the XVII century, Richelieu and Olivares, the former very [bad-]known through the eyes of The Three Musketeers by Hollywood with the cooperation of Alexandre Dumas, the latter ignored by most of the people, as it usually happens with those that lose a war. Apart from being very readable (I bought it on Sun-day and I have finished by Tuesday) and not very long, the contrast between Richelieu and Oli-vares is useful to avoid topics and myths based on the supposedly a-religious and modern per-formance of the French Cardinal versus the obsolete behaviour and ideas of the Count-Duke, or on the national character of France and/or Spain. In the case of Olivares, I have found that this book dedicates more pages to deal with the psychological and/or personal aspects than Elliot's "The Count-Duke of Olivares. The Statesman in an age of decline", who focuses more on poli-tics.
(Other books I would recommend to read on Spain: As a general overview, "A History of Spain" by Joseph Perez; and more focused on the XVI and/or XVII centuries: "The Spain of Philip II" by Joseph Perez; "Imperial Spain 1469-1716" and "The Count-Duke of Olivares. The Statesman in an age of decline" both of them also written by John Elliot; "Spain 1469-1714, A Society of Conflict", by Henry Kamen; and " Spain 1516-1598 : From Nation State to World Empire" and "The His-panic World in Crisis and Change, 1598-1700" both of them written by John Lynch).
