Book Description
Teenagers are notorious for differences with their parents, but George Peper has been lucky to share a special friendship with his 18-year-old son, Scott. For the past decade, the two have bonded over a mutual passion for golf, spending hundreds of hours together they would never have enjoyed if not for their love of chasing around a little white ball. Now, Peper examines their relationship, analyzing how their roles have morphed from faultless father and worshipful son to teacher and pupil, dictator and insurgent, and ultimately, target and assassin, as son tries to outscore father over 18 holes. In an endearing portrait, George Peper hits on the universal lessons of life, love, and golf-as he's learned them from his teenage son.
Download Description
This book focuses on the bonding and healing powers of golf between fathers and sons. Drawing from his own experiences, George Peper hits on the universal lessons of life, love, and golf learned through his relationships with his father and two sons. Most specifically, the book offers an endearing portrait of Peper's relationship over the last nine years with his 18-year-old son, Scott. The book examines their shared passion for golf and chronicles the hundreds of hours they otherwise never would have enjoyed if not for their love of chasing around a little white ball. In the process, the author reveals how their roles morphed from faultless father and worshipful son to teacher and pupil, dictator and insurgent, and ultimately, target and assassin, as son tried to outscore father over 18 holes.
Customer Reviews:
An Ace!.......2003-05-21
For those of us who love golf and have children,George Peper's book, Playing Partners, is a must read. Golf, like children, is a life time endeavor, sometimes rewarding, often frustrating but deeply enjoyable. This book captures all the subtleties of these parallel pursuits and shows that there is no magic formula for success, just hard work and practice.

an indispensible part of any psychedelic library.......2000-12-23
This book contains the works of many of the pioneers of the psychedelic revolution not to be found anywhere else. While I read this several years ago, I am left with the impression that this one of the best sources of both scientific and/or spiritual writings by some of the greatest minds to survey the outer limits of the human psyche in one volume. Well worth the price. Get yours before it goes out of print!

Chaos Unleashed upon your Mind!.......2007-01-06
The Games Workshop chaotic pantheon has always been an inspiring, and at times frightening, expose of evil and horrors. This book was a delight, written with concise detail accompanied by memorable art. I have followed the GW chaos line since the release of the Realm of Chaos books nearly 20 years ago. Those two books are, and always will be, for me the height of GW's chaotic catalog. This book is a perfect edition for anyone wanting to delve into the dark realms of the GW universe without all the game stats. An incredible book that is written with such exactness and detail that one might imagine they might have really acquired an ancient and forbidden text like the Necronomicon. Worth every penny! The only reason I resisted in giving 5 stars is simply because I remember fondly the art of the Realms books, which at times has been duplicated here. It stands out over the new pieces of which many just do not have that feel of an ancient evil text.

very unique........2007-06-06
Even though I've read a ton of other warhammer related books I found a lot of new stuff in here. Even when they mentioned a previously mentioned character there is always something new.
As others have said the artwork is amazing and There is plenty of it.
An excellent, but disturbing, Warhammer resource........2005-09-19
Previous reviews have already mentioned how informative and well-written the book is, and I can only agree with them. However, the front flap mentions that this book is for mature readers only, and they are not kidding... Many of the drawings and even some of the writings are the stuff of nightmares. (Which is only fitting, given the subject of the book.) Read at your own risk.
Chaoticly Insane.......2005-08-13
This book carries a steep price but in my estimation is more than worth picking up. I've been a fan of Warhammer since I was 8. I love the old system and this new system. If you have never seen any of the info presented in the old (1st edition) Chaos books then this book is for you. It covers all four Chaos gods. There is a little bit of Warhammer 40K presented here. Most of the info is WFRP. The artwork is as impressive as ever and this book is filled with it. Now for the FAIR WARNING. This book does NOT contain ANY statistic info. Any number junkies out there would want to avoid this book. I though it would be nice to have all the info on Chaos in one book including stats but oh well. It is a good read. It is written as if it is an actual book of research about chaos. Quite fun to be reading something in it and see the researchers hand writing in different ink making notes to things he referenced earlier or correcting himself or even getting a nose bleed while trying to figure out choas calculations. On the nose bleed page there several drops of blood that stain the page. It is a massive book, well bound, and in hardback with a soft cover flap.
Chaos at its darkest..........2005-07-09
Wow. That's really all I can say to sum up this collection. Wow. I did not purchase the individual volumes and only became aware of the series recently when I found a listing for this book. As the description states, this book is essentially an overview of Warhammer's four Chaos gods. Now, there have been several books released covering similar territory, but never have I seen one so well done. The twin Realms of Chaos volumes put out by Games Workshop in the early 1990s are almost as good, but Liber Chaotica just oozes a style, atmosphere, and character unlike anything I've ever seen in a gaming suppliment. It's worth mentioning that this book contains absolutely no game rules for either Warhammer Fantasy Battles or Warhammer 40K (in fact, it makes no mention of the 40K universe). This fact makes it more a resource for players of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay than the wargaming crowd. But my god, what a resource! The whole book is written as if it were penned by the Imperial scholar Richter Kless, a device that worked quite well in the old Earthdawn and Shadowrun suppliments from FASA. The idea is that you get an educated overview of Chaos from the perspective of a character who lives in the Warhammer world. What makes it work so well in Liber Chaotica is that Kless actually goes back and adds handwritten annotations to his work. Over the course of the book's five volumes, readers get to watch his sanity slowly deteriorate as he exposes himself to the subtle, corrupting influence of Chaos. The Horrors Sourcebook for FASA's Earthdawn was written (and written well) in the same fashion, but that book's relative brevity robbed it of the impact that Liber Chaotica manages to achieve.
The book itself is a work of art. It is well bound and lavishly (and, at times, disturbingly) illustrated. I simply cannot recommend it enough to anyone who has an interest in the forces of Chaos in the Warhammer world. Buy it before it goes out of print, you will not be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing useful here..........2007-04-02
Although there are some interesting excercises in this book, it didn't have the extensive, detailed "nuts & bolts" information I was looking for. Each subject is a basic overview followed by "see the learning center for more information".
I was hoping for detailed information on all controls and instruments, the information that's NOT found in the FS2004 learning center.
In short, don't waste your money.
Dud!.......2007-01-09
This product doesn't run. I could never get it to work, even after applying all the fixes that Microsoft had ready on its website. I'm still not sure what to do with it.
A great book!.......2006-03-20
I was most happy with all those V-speeds I can't seem to find anywhere else. Good advice inside.
Good Resource.......2006-03-20
I purchased this book after I read the other reviews. Some of them were not as good as others. I have long been a fan of Flight Simulator and I have purchased all the hints book to go along with each one. I found this book to be a great resource and I have used it daily.
Nothing New Here.......2006-02-25
Nearly everything in the book is just a re-hash of information that is in the learning center section of Flight Simulator. More depth and breadth of information is needed to merit purchasing this book.

The Search for Modern China
ASIN: 0231112769 |
Book Description
China, the world's oldest and most populous state, remains an enigma to most people in the West, even at a time when that country is playing an increasingly prominent role on the international stage. At the heart of modern Chinese history have been the efforts of the Chinese people to transform their polity into a modern nation state, the Confucian orthodoxy into an ideology that can help direct that process, and an agrarian economy into an industrial one. These efforts are ongoing and of great importance.
This book is both an introduction to the major features of modern Chinese history and a resource for researchers interested in virtually any topic relating to the Chinese experience of the last 220 years. This valuable reference contains:
 a historical narrative providing a comprehensive overview of five core aspects of Chinese history: domestic politics, society, the economy, the world of culture and thought, and relations with the outside world;
 a compendium of 250 short, descriptive articles on key figures, events, and terms;
a resource guide containing approximately 500 annotated entries for the most authoritative sources for further research in English, as well as descriptions of important films depicting modern China and a guide to electronic resources; and
appendices, including a chronology, excerpts from key primary source documents, and a wealth of tables and graphs on demographic, social, and economic trends.

Very Shipshape.......2002-03-16
An excellent quick synopsis of modern China. Gives an historical overview, biographies of the major players, and descriptions of all the recent historical trends that make China what it is today, all in 300 pages.
My only reason to withhold five stars is that I felt the treatment of the last forty years or so was a bit cursory. But then, this is a history book, and not a current events review. I'd recommend it to anybody who is looking for a quick but thorough treatment of the subject.
Just the Right Amount of Information.......2001-01-13
If you are considering doing business in China, are concerned about global geopolitical developments, or just interested in history and current affairs, this is the book for you. It presents a thorough, yet highly engaging overview of the developments that have led to the modern Chinese State. If you are only going to read one book on China, this would be the one.

Each volume has chapter introductions, essay introductions, timelines, and annotated bibliographies.
Customer Reviews:
What a waste of time.......2006-12-17
As far as books concerning the Atlantic world go this is among the worst. It is a bunch of random 7 page essays that try to look at various places in the Atlantic world. It fails miserably as it does not tie any of the worlds together. Read Elliot's book Empires of the Atlantic World: Britain and Spain in America 1492-1830 for a much clearer picture. Stay away!

Various thoughts on an important topic.......2005-02-12
We all know about the unbroken warfare between science and religion, going back centuries and engulfing the lives of countless brave original thinkers who were struck down by the reactionary church. Or do we? This is the central question of God & Nature. Inside, the reader will find nineteen essays (including the intro, by editors David Lindberg and Ronald Numbers) addressing various topics on the theme, beginning in ancient times and extending into contemporary times. With so many writers contributing independently, it is impossible to state definitively what the book's conclusion is, but it's safe to generalize that all dispute to some extent the common misperception about science/religion's history.
There are common points. Most contributors directly state at least once their disapproval of the common myth. There was not, they repeat, a history of warfare. Science, as we think of the word today, and religion were not intrinsically at odds, nor were most people who knew something of both inclined to reject one for the other (in some cases this may have been prudence, but in many it was genuine). The myth comes from nineteenth century polemicists, including Cornell University president Andrew Dickson White's lengthy tome in which "warfare" appears explicitly in the title. Ultimately, the aim of each essay is to dispute this point. But here many of them run into troubles.
I don't dispute outright their work. The contributors are noted experts in their field. Indeed, I found most of the essays valuable and enlightening (though I tend to question its value for general readers, despite what's written on the back cover; these are not easy pieces). But I do detect a certain defensiveness in most of the essays, and the final conclusion usually is that yes, all this bad stuff happened, but it wasn't representative. Or something to that effect. I agree wholeheartedly that warfare is a bad metaphor. Oppression is a better one. Warfare implies both sides had a chance.
Despite my pessimism, it is clear in reading that religion is not intrinsically opposed to science in all cases. Only a very few church leaders thought like this. But it is just as true, and pointed out often in these very essays, that whenever the two parties reach differing conclusions, it was the church that clamped down, and hard. The story of Galileo is well known in the public mind, including much that's false, but whatever his personality or timing or bad political luck, it was still Galileo that was tried and locked away for sharing his opinions. I don't believe the Royal Society of London ever behaved quite so badly, or wished to.
Were it up to me to erase the warfare myth and replace it with another, I would choose Bolshevism. By now some knowledgeable readers can guess what I'm going to say. In the early Soviet era a biologist named Lysenko convinced the leadership that his theory of genetics would lead to a crop of winter wheat, something the commissars would have greatly liked after wrecking Russian agriculture (not that it was great to begin with). So in true Soviet fashion, all dissenting biologists were suppressed. And in those days, suppressed meant shipped off in the dead of night, maybe to return someday. To be fair to the church, they never behaved in such a concentrated horrible manner, but the attitude was the same. Thou shall not differ with us, because what we want to be true is true.
There is a trend in science history to play down the influence of religious authority on scientific thinking. To a large extent it is justified. Older works such as by the aforementioned White were generally written by men with big axes to grind. White himself was a protestant minister, and virtually every example in his monumental book is in fact anti-Catholic. Public interest in the subject began roughly during the time of Darwin, when interest and tempers were running hot. But the trend often goes too far. The bodies of these essays usually provide good evidence that the interaction between religion and science has often been abusive by religion against science. Time and time again the church shows its greatest interest in scientific matter when it is ready to suppress the conclusions. But to move beyond the old mythology, the intent and devoted reader can certainly find much in these pages. There are a lot of points brought out here. Despite my tone over the last few paragraphs, I'm slightly more convinced than before that the history is not all bad. But one should approach the topic critically, and demand accountable historical analysis. The authors of these essays provide it in spades.

Book Description
The idea that humans can effectively "manage" nature - that we can successfully manipulate and control our environment to meet our needs and satisfy our desires - is almost universally accepted in today's society. While we may be aware that nearly all significant environmental problems are caused by human actions, we remain convinced that the key to solving these problems is "better management.
In Unmanaged Landscapes, editor Bill Willers brings together an insightful and thought-provoking selection of writings that challenge that assumption. Written between the mid-nineteenth century and the present day, the pieces range from two paragraphs written in response to an exam question to tightly reasoned philosophical arguments. They offer the thoughts, stories, and analysis of scientists, journalists, philosophers, historians, educators, and others who have considered the effects and implications of "resource management," and have found themselves in favor of keeping some landscapes free from human interference.
The collection is divided into three sections: one that focuses on biology and ecology, one that examines the idea of wildness from the standpoint of human society and its economic concerns, and a third that considers philosophical and spiritual aspects of wildness. Featured are works from leading environmental thinkers including Rachel Carlson, George Wuerthner, Joanna Macy, Paul Shepard, David Orr, John Burroughs, David Ehrenfeld, Arne Naess, Bill McKibben, Donald Worster, Carolyn Merchant, Rick Bass, and many others.
As Willers explains in his introduction, "If wildness and wild creatures are to survive on Earth, so then must unmanaged landscapes, for they are the fountainheads of the wildness that Henry Thoreau taught is the preservation of the world. They are the blank spots on the map longed for by Aldo Leopold." Unmanaged Landscapes presents a compelling argument for protecting and restoring that wildness.
