Book Description
This is the incredible story of one man's vision of world commerce. William Paterson was a businessman and economic thinker far ahead of his time, whose place in history is assured. He founded the Bank of England, he helped broker the Treaty of Union between Scotland and England and, above all else, he envisaged a world where nations could trade unencumbered by monopolies and restrictive practices, and companies could be funded with international investment. All more than 300 years ago. In an attempt to realise his dream he set off on a daring voyage across half the globe to establish a trading emporium for the world at Darien, Panama. In the tradition of Longitude, The Man Who Saw the Future is the exciting story of buccaneers, political intrigue, economic vision, failed dreams, warring countries and dogged determination in the face of adversity.
Book Description
Many have said Johnny Unitas was the best quarterback who ever played the game. No less an authority than Sports Illustrated thinks so. In a 2002 statistical analysis of NFL Hall of Fame quarterbacks and active quarterbacks with HOF credentials, Unitas was ranked #1. Johnny U was also the hero of untold millions of youths who spent countless hours in their backyards emulating the stoop-shouldered, rifle-armed legend who wore the familiar 19 on his jersey.
Johnny Unitas's story is a classic rags-to-riches tale. The skinny, blue-collar kid who played college ball at a little-known school and failed in a tryout with his hometown pro team was given a second chance by the Baltimore Colts. Two years later he led the team to victory in the 1958 NFL Championship game, a game dubbed the greatest ever played. Unitas played eighteen seasons (and in ten Pro Bowls), retiring in 1973 as the league's all-time leader in passing yards with more than 40,000. His unsurpassed record of forty-seven consecutive games with at least one touchdown pass continues to be mentioned in the same breath as baseball icon Joe DiMaggio's fifty-six-game hitting streak.
When Unitas unexpectedly died in September 2002, the sports world mourned the passing of a genuine sports hero. In Johnny Unitas: Mr. Quarterback, dozens of his friends, neighbors, acquaintances, relatives, fans, and teammates present compelling firsthand memories, insights, and testimonials. Their stories begin with his schoolboy days in Pittsburgh and carry on to his years of toiling in near anonymity at the University of Louisville and his nearly two decades in the NFL and beyond.

CREW CUT AND HIGH TOPS.......2007-03-05
THIS IS ABOUT JOHN UNITAS FORMER NFL GREAT. THE BOOK CONATINS MANY STORIES AND INSIGHTS BY VARIOUS RELATIVES TEAMATES AND FRIENDS OF JOHNNY U. SOME OF THE MANY WHO CONTRIBUTED THEIR STORIES ABOUT UNITAS ARE TOM MATTE, DON SHULA, LENNY MOORE AND SAM HUFF. I FOUND THIS TO BE A NICE BUT NOT TOO DETAILED BOOK ABOUT UNITAS. I THINK HIS TOUGHNESS, LACK OF EGO AND PURE TALENT WERE THE MAIN ISSUES IN MOST OF THESE INTERESTING STORIES. NOT A GREAT BOOK BUT A VERY INTERESTING AND NOSTALGIC TRIP FOR ALL COLT FANS. RECOMENDED.

Adbusters is a magazine that attacks the culture of consumerism by turning its own tactics against it--employing the glossy tactics of advertising to encourage people to take part in "Buy Nothing Day" and "TV Turnoff Week." Culture Jam takes the revolution to another level, as the magazine's publisher, Kalle Lasn, issues a call to arms to "the advance shock troops of the most significant social movement" of the early 21st century. Dissatisfied with the results of both academic and mainstream liberalism and feminism, Lasn harks back to the situationist roots of the 1968 Paris uprisings, a brief moment when it seemed possible that men and women might be able to wholly re-create not only their own lives but society as well.
That revolution stumbled and fell, however, and Lasn views contemporary existence as one in which people have almost entirely succumbed to the cultural mandates of consumer capitalism, turning to corporations for guidance about how to look and what to desire. He offers several tips on how you can "demarket your life," including talking back to telemarketers and intensified boycotts (want to strike a blow against tobacco giant Philip Morris? Stop buying Maxwell House coffees, Kraft dairy products, Post cereals, and Miller beer). Lasn also pushes for the return of corporations to a subordinate role in people's lives, citing the 1886 U.S. Supreme Court decision that rendered corporations "natural persons" in the eyes of the law as a horrendous miscarriage of justice that must be overturned. (One of his biggest targets is media conglomerates who are able to disseminate their ideology throughout the information spectrum; in an ironic twist of fate, perhaps, the publisher of Culture Jam became a division of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation scant months before the book's release.)
Culture Jam is an extreme book--among its declarations: "consumer capitalism is by its very nature unethical"--and Lasn's reasoning is not without flaws. One of the weak links in his argument is his insistence that, because none of the major television networks will allow him to purchase airtime for his "subverts," there is "no democracy on the airwaves" and his freedom of speech is being denied. The First Amendment says only that "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech"; it says nothing about what he deems the "right to communicate ... through any media." On the other hand, he also raises a more plausible line of attack--since it's the government that grants broadcasters access to the airwaves, citizens should press for more say in how broadcast licenses are distributed. But whatever the book's excesses, Lasn is driven by a righteous anger--and Culture Jam may likely convince you, too, that the models of material success presented to us are not only inadequate to true happiness, they must be overturned. --Ron Hogan
Book Description
According to Kalle Lasn, publisher of Adbusters magazine, culture jamming will become to our era what civil rights was to the '60s, what feminism was to the '70s, and what environmental activism was to the '80s. Culture jammers are a global network of media activists who assert that America is no longer a country, but a multitrillion-dollar brand, built on a cult of celebrity and marketing brand names. These brands, products, celebrities -- the spectacles that surround the production of culture -- are our culture now.
The architect of Buy Nothing Day and TV Turnoff Week, Lasn believes it is only by "uncooling" these symbols of culture, by organizing resistance against the institutions that manage the brands, that America can reassert herself. With cutting-edge design, this manifesto for the new millennium has the potential to completely alter the way we think and live.
Customer Reviews:
Culture Jam- an Eye Opener .......2004-12-17
Kalle Lasn's Culture Jam is a harsh and unforgiving reality check on the progression of American commercialism and, as a consequence, the decline of culture and community in the United States. By articulating the evils of television, advertising, and the media, Lasn illustrates to the reader the ways in which these technologies have warped and ravaged the brains of our generation. Arguing that these by-products of modernity are imbibed deep within our `culture', Lasn argues that the commercialist trend that Americans have so entrenched themselves within will inevitably damage the minds and spirits of our future as well, and lead to our eventual demise. Both chilling and insightful, Culture Jam is not only a narrative of the effects of commercialism, but one also of the loss of community that Americans have experienced as a result of the deep preoccupation we have developed with brand names through the mind numbing message we are fed constantly by the media and each other: buy, buy, buy.
By further illuminating the innumerable other evils of the multi-million dollar brand that is American, Lasn explains to the reader how concentrated corporate control, loss of a sense of real self, and the overriding emphasis we put on brand names, has led to the complete fall of the great American Dream. Caring about nothing, less what we own, and unable to even communicate with our loved ones without the comfortable buzz of our brand name electronic devices surrounding us, American's have become unable to settle with enough, and instead, yearn for the proverbial MORE. Lasn concludes with a challenge to the reader to deny this branding of America and break free from the bonds of consumerism and media.
What I thought to be a somewhat abrasive and self righteous attitude at the beginning of the book, I came to realize was merely an outrage over the state of America today and a deep and sincere appeal to the reader to join in this outrage in order to care enough to make a change. The harsh truth that, yes, "We, the people, have lost control" could be the wake up call that we need in order to begin to reject the serious crisis of mind controlling consumerism and understand that it truly shapes and dictates our very lives (71). Lasn wholeheartedly succeeds in his quest to jolt the reader out of his passive state of acceptance and to start the flow of dialogue about change and hope for a different future.
a starting point for living consciously.......2004-10-06
As a founder of the Adbusters organization and prominent activist himself, Kalle Lasn examines modern American society, media, and corporations and just how intertwined they all are in his 1999 work Culture Jam: The Uncooling of America.
Written in an interesting narrative style, Lasn describes many of the afflictions today's typical American suffer from and how we have become so accustomed to finding salvation in many different ways, essentially, in Corporate America.
He then delves further and demonstrates how Corporate America is not here for us, to provide us with all of the latest and greatest, but rather how it shapes us and exploits us.
All the while, he proposes that, due to the constraints of modern society, we are so disconnected from nature and the world at large that we are much more psychologically and physically affected than we may even be aware.
Lasn acknowledges the discouragement that many have when fighting for a change in society, but he offers up the fundamental idea behind this next revolution as "culture jamming" and provides some hope.
Culture Jam offers up new perspectives that are not always readily made to us in this society; the bottom line Lasn conveys is that we need to fight fire with fire and anybody can contribute, even in the most seemingly miniscule way.
No Culture Shock for me!.......2003-02-12
I found Culture Jam a good reference to the culture shock many Americans go through each day. The main argument refers to our lives as consumer and therefore media driven.
In reading Kalle Lasn's book, my eyes were opened by how consumer and media driven our lives are. Although, I already knew of this aspect as a consumer, the examples given had much reflection on what I consider an average middle class American life.
I wish that there were more information that did not reflect a great amount on the examples given. In this I mean that the author should give examples of the outside world.
Lasn opened the book with "Autumn", to assess the current damages of our consumer driven lives. The point that if we cut nature out of our lives that our spirits die is right on in a sense. When we totally rely on materialistic things, we do indeed lose our spirituality. We indeed have also become more virtual rather that relying on our "real" lives.
Classifying advertisements as "mental pollutants" was also a good analogy. We go through the motions of work everyday to earn money for the products we see advertised everyday in the media. Our lives are totally shaped by the media.
Huge corporations have become dominate by serving their own interests when they consistently put their products on the airwaves. But haven't those interests become our interests? Why isn't this explained? I think it is a major part of why we are like we are as consumers.
I didn't agree with the concept of the Situationists in the "Spring" section of the book. Why do they think the spectacle has been kidnapped? This is never really explained and doesn't bring any clear meaning to the page. By the way, the whole Situationists theory, if you can call it that, is a farce. I couldn't even read through this part in the book. It's just repeating itself over and over again.
I also did not find any meaning in the "We are not" sections of the book. Look at what we are for once. I don't really care for some negativity with no backup. It is just too much. If you really would care to look into it, everything still has the same meaning, it just depends how each individual looks at it. Why do we keep blaming others for the uncertainty and change? I am still cool!
The close of the book seemed to ramble on about thinking and doing things for yourself, which I feel left a lot of ends untied. I think the ending was just a way to get more pages in the book and very unhelpful. I think we can figure out on our own that we must "demarketise" our lives in order to be a greater society.
Not bad, but definitely not the best.......2003-02-10
Lasn begins the book Culture Jam: The Uncooling of America with several chapters devoted to the problems of American culture. We watch too much television. We have become desensitized to violence. We buy wholeheartedly into what corporate America tells us we should eat, wear, look like, be. We are a nation that interacts with the world through the "virtual" lenses of our cameras, our computers, our televisions. We have become disconnected from the natural world. While the list he lays out is nice, it's a relatively familiar litany of complaints about American consumerism.
However, the solutions that he offers later in the book seem to contradict each other. One of his main arguments is that our lives should be spent seeking and engaging in authentic gestures. On page 106, Lasn says "Living in the moment, pursuing the authentic gesture, living close to the edge -- call it what you will -- when it's genuine, it's the force that makes life worth living." Although I agree that much of our lives are inauthentic and dictated by corporate America, authenticity as a goal leaves a lot of room for scary interpretation. What if "living on the edge" for me is murder or rape? What if the thing that makes me feel most alive is setting my neighbor's house on fire? Is it fair to trample on the rights of others in our quest for authenticity? It's a little unsettling to me that Lasn's statement, whether he intended this or not, could be interpreted as advocating a society full of amoral chaos.
In addition, Lasn seems to contradict himself in the next section of his book. Lasn offers the reader many ideas of how they can take on corporate America. On page 149, Lasn informs us that "The real lesson here is that no battle is too small." Lasn teaches us how to fight back against the 1-800 headquarters of our bank when we are told that we will no longer be able to call our local branch directly. Lasn offers an example of how we can attack the Nike sponsorship of our university hockey team. The problem is not that these things are not worth doing (although one could question just how important a battle with the bank is when our president is about to send us to war). The problem is that Lasn seemed to be saying in the previous section that we should be striving for an authentic experience. What's authentic about replicating an experience that one read about in his book? And why is blindly following Lasn's ideas more authentic than blindly following American consumerism?
Although there are some inconsistencies and some of his statements are misguided, I believe Lasn's heart is in the right place. The reader gets the sense that he is very committed to his beliefs and his desire to effect positive change on the American culture. He's right that America needs changing, but I didn't find reason to believe that he's found a viable path to this change.
I'll take mine with idealism on the side.......2000-12-21
Okay, so Kalle Lasn is a bit over the edge sometimes. But honestly people, would you rather have someone who was a bit idealistic & had not only a strong vision but their heart in the right place OR some crusty chap who didn't bother to question or rally the masses? i'll cast my vote for the first, thanks. Kalle Lasn is just that. Perhaps there are some loopholes in his presentation and arguments, but who cares? He is one of the few who is speaking out against what the rest of us are being brainwashed by. So buy the book & learn a little--but don't buy the book... unless you want to feel counter-productive once you start reading it.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent! Great book.......2007-07-17
This is really the best book i ever found. I have bought several books for Excel VBA. Non of them will explain as detail as this book. Besides, for those people who really interest in VBA, this is really a good book where you can start solve more complex problem.
Non of the books so far i found will teach you how to create data structure using VBA e.g binary tree, linked list, queue and stack thru VBA implementation. it is worth while to keep this book for your future reference...
Excellent reference book for Intermediate users.......2007-07-13
In the introduction the authors state : "To make it possible to stuff as much code into this book, we've had to dispense with material specifically geared for beginners"
I like that - a lot of 'reference' books I've purchased waste many chapters devoted to topics that I would expect to find in 'Inroduction' or 'Beginners' - titled books.
This tome however (all 1073 pages of it!) is totally dedicated to useful code snippets and sound programming principles.
Despite its size I find the book logically structured and very easy to locate the information I need, very quickly - the "Contents at a Glance" page helps immensly.
I'd definitely recommend this book for any VBA developer as an essential resource.
Thorough, Instructional, with great code samples.......2006-02-27
This book has gotten me out of many scrapes. It is a rare book that can be read from the beginning, while trying out the sample code, as a way to learn the language, or as a reference book, to look up how to use a certain function effectively while writing code. Don't let the title fool you, this book is for those coding in VB just as much as it is for those using VBA. If you are going to buy one book on Visual Basic, let this be the one. If you are going to buy one book on Visual Basic, and see one movie this year, then buy this book and see Amelie. ;)
Reference Book.......2003-11-30
Good reference book... help you find tricks to do automation and to maximize the output of your VBA code. Not for newbies.
Object-Oriented Programming in VBA.......2003-04-08
Finally there is a book that addresses advanced/state-of-the-art topics and program functionality in VBA. Most other VBA books end their discussion of object-oriented constructs and custom classes with a weak example of a collection class. This book goes way beyond into custom events, interface and implementation classes, and error handling. You're left with the feeling that you have access to all the armament VBA has to offer. Plus, there are lot's of tips & tricks for everything else, and lot's of code you need but haven't had the time to write yourself.
Book Description
She needs no introduction. For decades, she's been the world's leading icon of democracy. Four million people visit her each year. She is the very symbol of America. But how well do we really know the Statue of Liberty? Did you know, for instance, that her origin dates back to Roman antiquity? Or that New York narrowly beat out Philadelphia for the right to house her? Or that her nose is three feet, eight inches long?
In time to celebrate Lady Liberty at the millennium, this gorgeous encyclopedia is sure to satisfy the countless requests historian Barry Moreno has received to deliver the first full-scale reference ever written on the Statue of Liberty. As its name implies, The Statue of Liberty Encyclopedia promises to answer every possible question about our famous monument. Featuring an abundance of little-known but fascinating aspects and curiosities about the statue's history, the book also presents a vast collection of illustrations -- many never before published -- ranging from the amusing to the poignant to the pa-triotic. Stops on this visual tour include Betty Grable making a visit to the statue, antique autogyros flying overhead, and a gravity-defying glimpse of Liberty's spiraling inner armature.
The Statue of Liberty Encyclopedia is not just the history of one monument but the story of our nation and its far-reaching cultural and ideological roots. Elegant and eloquent, the book will stand as an emotional, educational, and entertaining testament to the statue's enduring significance.
Customer Reviews:
Best Liberty Book since 1986!.......2000-10-09
Finally, a book worth having! There were a lot of books published between 1984 and 1986 for the statue's centennial and only a few were worth having. This newly published book is a must have for the Statue of Liberty collector, historian, or proud American.
"The Statue of Encyclopedia, serves as the first ever top-to-bottom reference on one of the most beloved national monuments. Barry Moreno, the premier expert and historian of the Statue of Liberty, leads readers on a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated A-to-Z tour. Featuring an abundance of little-known but fascinating aspects and curiosities about her history, the book also includes a vast collection of photographs - many never before published."
Every American should own this........2000-09-23
Whether you're political, or artistic, every American should own this book. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? An intangible concept that is broken down into encyclopedia form for scholars and us regular folks to digest. There are dozens of books about the Statue, but I found this one is by far the most comprehensive and the pictures are of outstanding quality. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Anti-Semitism has been on the rise since the 9/11 attacks on America, its roots firmly anchored in centuries-old pre?udices. Schweitzer and Perry analyze the lies, misperceptions, and myths about Jews and Judaism that have been spread throughout the centuries. Beginning in antiquity and continuing into the present day, the authors explore major anti-Semitic themes: Jews as murderers of Christ; Jews as both evil capitalists and eil communists; the myth of the Holocaust; the Nation of Islams hatred of the Jews; and more. This is an eye-opening piece of work that, sadly, is still needed today.
Customer Reviews:
Countering a Mythology of Hate.......2006-09-11
There are so many books attempting to understand a hatred that has morphed like an indestructable virus from the religious hatred inspired by the gospels, to the social hatred that survived the reformation, to the racial and political hatred that brought us the holocaust, that one questions the need for yet another. This volume is a worthy addition.
The authors counters the Christian anti semitism with a critcal assessment of the gospels. They counter the absurd tales of blood libel with factual counter evidence. They counter the ridiculuous economic conspiracies with a bright illumination on the modern devlopments of capitalism, communism and democracy. Yet they readily acknowledged that the myths have such a strong hold on the ignorant and the hateful that it is often impervious to logic and evidence.
Their best addition to the liturgy is the chapter on holocaust deniers; the reader will become well equipped to defray these thinly disguised anti semitic frauds. They also devote a chapter (there are only 6) on the Nation of Islam (not to be confused with traditional Islam) as led by Farrakhan and the anti semitism they have established in the black community.
He soundly trounces the publishing of the "The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews," a "protocol' like document that aims to stir black anti-semitism by blaming the Jews for the centuries of black degradation of the slave trade. While filled with very official looking footnotes and facts that may dupe the ignorant it is another ridiculous anti semtic fraud that the authors clearly place in the same trash heap as the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion and the Holocaust deniers.
The book spends less time analyzing anti-semitism in the Arab world, but that alone could consume volumes; (Read The Return of Anti-Semitsm by Gabriel Schoenfeld) and they do not devote much attention to anti semitism of the modern political Left. For that see The New Anti Semitsm by Phyllis Chesler or The Changing Face of Anti Semitsm by Walter Lacqueur.
In spite of those noted shortcomings it is well written, offers detailed response to specific antisemtic charges and adds more information about the deniers and the Nation of Islam followers. For those who want to learn how to respond to modern anti-semtic charges this may be the best single book of a very distinguished group of new writing on the longest hatred.
The Deep Roots of Antisemitism.......2003-10-18
Marvin Perry and Frederick Schweitzer have written an important treatment of the origins and development of antisemitism from antiquity to the present. The authors begin with the account of the death and trial of Jesus in the gospels which portray the
Jews as "Christ Killers," creating a myth that has been nourished in the Christian church throughout the centuries. The second chapter covers the outrageous and absurd accusation that the Jews practice murder of Christian children as a religious ritual. Such allegations, common in the Middle Ages, began to appear again in the 17th century in eastern Europe. This blood libel is still flourishing, especially in Arab countries,
The third major subject is the demonization of the Jews: Christians equated the Jews with Satan or the Antichrist during the Middle Ages, and the Jews were blamed for the Black Death. Luther laid the foundations for German antisemitism, although the authors point out that "anti-Judaism during the middle Ages and the Reformation was essentially theological, not racial." A racial anti-Judaism arose in Spain, where it was argued that the Jews were wicked not only because of religion but also because they had bad blood. In the 19th century, extreme nationalism and Volkish thought (which saw the Jew as a racial inferior) set the scene for modern, racial antisemitism. Another
strand of calumny centers around the notorious forgery, the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, which lays out a conspiracy on the part of leading Jews to take over the world. The authors show that the Protocols was widely accepted in Germany and was an important ingredient, along with Volkish nationalism, in the Germans' acceptance of the Nazi doctrine of racial antisemitism. More recently, the Protocols have found
widespread approbation in the Muslim world.
Chapter four concerns the economic view of the Jew as Shylock. Again, the authors trace this phenomenon from the Middle Ages into modern times. A very interesting section deals with Karl Marx's antisemitism in his essay "On the Jewish Question," and
Werner Sombart's writings in support of Marx's views. A particularly sad conclusion to the chapter details Henry Ford's use of the Protocols of Zion which led Hitler to declare that Ford was his inspiration.
The final chapter deals with the denial of the Holocaust by neo-Nazis. After addressing the views of individual deniers of the Holocaust, the authors refute the myth itself. The final topic is the growing antisemitism in the black community. The authors argue that, although Jews were heavily represented in the civil rights movement, there has been a deepening alienation between African Americans and Jews. Louis Farrakhan, as head of the Nation of Islam, has taken advantage of this alienation and exacerbated it.
This study, based on the latest scholarship, is carefully conceived and well-written. Its spirit is ecumenical and irenic. Its subtitle, "Myth and Hate from Antiquity to the
Present," neatly sums up its contents. Its timeliness is underscored by the recent statements of the prime minister of Malaysia at a meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference. Echoing the conspiracy theory of the Protocols of Zion, he asserted that the Jews rule the world by proxy and that they invented socialism and communism.
An Important Book on Anti-Semitism, Past & Present.......2003-09-29
Perry and Schweitzer have written an interesting and informative analysis of why the Jewish people have faced so much hatred and adversity throughout their history, including up to the present. The authors look at a number of myths about Jews, such as Jews as Christ killers and ritual murderers, the diabolization of Jews, denial of the Holocaust and anti-semitism and the Nation of Islam. Each myth is examined and debunked through a reasoned analysis of historical fact. This is an important book for today's world as many of these myths continue to live on, as evidenced by Holocaust deniers and events such as the controversy surrounding Mel Gibson's not yet released film, The Passion, depicting the trial and death of Jesus. Although slow going at times, as a layperson, I found this scholarly work quite readable and highly worthwhile.
Excellent work !.......2003-09-28
In their new book, Perry and Schweitzer make perfectly clear that Antisemitism is not merely a social problem but an international, religious, and political one, and is not limited to those categories. They do not bash anyone but fulfill the historian's responsibility of precise analysis and interpretation based on evidence. It is utterly wrong to believe that no one can really understand Antisemitism: Thanks to books like this one, it is well and widely understood. The authors hold out real hope for those who seek to combat Antisemitism, and give an example of what can be done by their part in the successful struggle to rebut and utterly discredit the notorious Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel. One of the great merits of this book is its demonstration that Antisemitism was created by non-Jews and is in essence a problem for non-Jews. They make it clear that peace and reconciliation between Jews and non-Jews will not come through pious hopes and the vague goodwill of loving those who hate you. Appropriately, an editorial in the Richmond Times-Dispatch urged Congressman Moran and Patrick Buchanan to get over their absurd prejudices and delusions about Jews by studying this book.
A Better Understanding of the basis of antisemitism.......2003-09-28
Since the 1967 Israeli-Arab War, antisemitism has been revived throughout the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. The age old canards of ritual murder and deicide, and the recent ones of holocaust denial and anti-Zionism have gathered new adherants among Islamics and Christians.
The authors of 'ANTISEMITISM', Marvin Perry and Frederick M. Schweitzer, have written a very readable and scholarly work explaining clearly the genesis and development of the many ugly heads of antisemitism. The factual material presented leads to conclusions which are not necessarily 'politically correct', but are logically sound. The authors describe the historical basis of religious and racial antisemitism which enables the reader to better understand the recent works of Catholic writers such as James Carrol and Gary Wills which deal with church bigotry. The present day use of well-worn anti-Judaic myths by Islamic fundamentalists and their camp followers are dealt with in an understandable manner. The authors collectively bring decades of scholarly expertise in writing this important book.

Book Description
The Fourth Edition of the best-selling text on the basic concepts, theory, methods, and applications of ordinary differential equations retains the clear, detailed style of the first three editions. Includes new material on matrix methods, numerical methods, the Laplace transform, and an appendix on polynomial equations. Stresses fundamental methods, and features traditional applications and brief introductions to the underlying theory.
Customer Reviews:
I AM NOT SATISFY.......2007-10-11
I got the wrong product. I order for 'Introduction to ordinary differential equations, by Shepley L. Ross 4th edition' but what I got is
"Introduction to ordinary differential equations student solution also by Shepley L. Ross 4th edition"
That is not what I order. I am not impressed about the mix-up to say the least. I am simply disappointed, and up till this moment there was no way to place a complaint or to request a return. I think I will visit the local bookstore next time.
Good book.......2006-03-04
well this is the solution book to the textbook. The solutions were as much understandable as the textbook itself - not so clear. However, its a good tool to know the answers and how they got to that point.
no pictures but good reading.......2005-10-21
When I was an undergraduate student taking my first course in differential equations the class hat had a textbook that had a lot of pictures and almost no explaining of the material (i.e. the usual just try this method that works & the magic how did they get that step).... Thus, being a student that wanted to do well in the course I sought out a different book to read and found the Ross book. The Ross differential equations book is an excellent introduction to differential equations as it does answer why things work, but still keeps it at an introductory level that freshman / sophomore college students can grasp.
Now, that I have completed 80 years of school and have been granted the opportunity to be an assistant professor I choose this book to teach from as it keep that balance: for the students who want to see why things work it gives an outline, but then on the next page for the students who just want to solve the problems it gives the generic process that can be followed to solve the problems. And, the other useful thing is LOTS OF FULLY WORKED EXAMPLES, and not just simple examples. This book starts with one simple example and then builds to a more challenging example and continues in that fashion.
I guess the only thing I can complain about this book is there are no pretty pictures like all of the books have, but at least you can say if you read this book you will learn differential equations..
Tim
p.s. there is also a third edition available for about the same price that is the exact same book, but also adds in a few chapters as an introduction to partial differential equations / Fourier series at the end of the book which is very useful for engineers and scientist.
Not perfect but a very good intro to ODEs........2001-03-03
Although this text has its problems, its an overall strong introducton to ODEs. Just exactly like another reviewer said, Some techniques (such as the operator method) are not given enough attention, while others are given a little too much attention. The applied sections can get a little flaky as well (Why the author does not use metric units is beyond me)
That being said, it is a very clearly written book. It is rarely (if ever) confusing, and the examples are generally good. His language and notation is not difficult to understand, and the plainly written style is a plus for any beginner to differential equations. I used this in my ODE class and this book alone is enough I would say. If it were a little more balanced with the methods and had a more robust applied sections I would give it five instead of four stars.
A nice book for beginner.......2000-09-22
I rated this five stars for several reasons:
1. English isn't my native language. But when studied ODE in
sophomore life, I could read this book thoroughly without
any difficulty. It's style is clear, plain.
2. For a beginner to ODE, I thought an "introduction" is most
important. This book undoubtedly provides an introduction
to ODE and more to make you aspire to study other deeper
books.
3. "An example speaks more than thouand words of
explanation."
Besides giving you complete and good explanation, the book
also has wonderful examples to them. Read the explanations
and examples, then do execises.
I found that I had more clear concepts about ODE than others.
Thank you, Mr. Ross. ^_^

Book Description
The Sierra Club Wetlands Reader is the second volume in the Sierra Club's new series of literary celebrations of the Earth's biomes -- the major ecological communities that have shaped the collective human experience.
From the Everglades to Alaska, North America's wetlands comprise irreplaceable habitats for innumerable plants and animals. In addition to being a subtle indicator of the health of the entire natural world, this delicate ecosystem has inspired an extraordinary amount of fine writing.
Included in this remarkable collection are works by influential writers and scientists such as John Wesley Powell, Jack London, Aldo Leopold, Frederick Law Olmsted, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Edward Ricketts. From William Bartram's Revolutionary War-era meditation on the wetlands of Florida to Mark Twain's commentary on the flooding of the Mississippi River, we encounter varied portraits of these fertile ecosystems.
In addition to celebrating this ecological community we are reminded of the importance of preservation, as the wetlands are a crucial link in maintaining the stability of a global environment.
