Customer Reviews:
Inspiring without being Pollyannish!.......2003-09-25
Two big thumbs up for "The Right Kind of Heroes: Coach Bob Shannon and the East St. Louis Flyers." Although Coach Shannon has apparently moved on, this book is still as -- or perhaps more -- relevant to those facing battles against the odds.
Expertly penned by St. Louis columnist Kevin Horrigan, the book does a remarkable job of putting the reader right in the middle of the dingy and dangerous town of East St. Louis. It's a real "you are there" feeling as you get to know the players and coach of this amazing team. Although the story is heartbreaking at times, you won't hear Horrigan break out the violins and wax overdramatic... just a solid real-life story.
Even if you're not a sports nut -- or only know a little about football -- you will be inspired as you laugh, cry, struggle and celebrate with this courageous coach and champion football team. You just can't put it down until the last page.
Whatever challenges you may be facing in life, this book will move you to "get it done!" I highly recommend it.
A Testament to Hard Work, Determination, and Character.......2003-08-21
This books paints the picture of a man who worked hard to acheive his goals. His example is good for everyone to follow. I wish he would have been my coach but I'm honored that he is now coaching my son.
Bringing back memories.......2002-11-05
I read this book 10 years ago and it was just as enjoyable this time around. This book is full of insights not only into the person of Bob Shannon, but offers an informative look into East St. Louis. A very quick and easy read. I had the pleasure of having Shannon as a teacher many years ago. Reading his words brings to mind his most distinctive voice, which always commanded respect.
Tell's the story as it really happened. Very motivating!.......1997-09-21
Having played against Bob Shannon, I know full well of the East Side mystique. Being a former player at nearby Granite City, I went to nearly every game mentioned in Bob's book. So, I'm over qualified to say that the East Side Flyers's story is a fascinating one. The place just emits an aura that has High School Football all around it! The 'Side was made on big play football, coached by Shannon, a big time coach
One of best books I have ever read........1997-01-30
This is one the best books on football that I have read. Coach Shannon is a credit to our coaching profession and this book shows that. It also gives us a look at what is
like to work under adverse conditions. If you are a football coach who thinks he has it tough, then you should read The Right Kind Of Heroes.

Book Description
Part Hollywood history, part history of the art of storytelling, this title is infused with Kaufman's wit, intelligence and love of words. The plots are those of classic films from the 1940s, and the characters are the bosses, bombshells and bad boys of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Customer Reviews:
Either you got it or you don't........2003-01-01
If you're desperately seeking a how-to manual on screenwriting, maybe it's not your calling. In any case, I found this book to be useful and interesting. I've thumbed through such standbys by Robert McKee and Lajos Egri - they're just stating the obvious and reverse engineering successful films and literary works. That's something anyone with a brain can do, I think. When Millard Kaufman was writing, there weren't any how-to books, preying on the masses seeking a low-mid six figures writing- deal. A lot can be learned from a writer like this.
Oversold.......2000-05-25
I think the reason I didn't like this book as much as some of the other readers is that I was looking for a book on the 'how-tos' of screenwriting, and as one of the main reviews on this page indicates, this book has been hyped as setting a "new standard in screenwriting instruction." It doesn't. It's more accurate to say that the book is Millard Kaufman's memoir of working in the Hollywood studio system, leavened with occasional generalities about writing. Not that these generalities aren't valuable, but it takes Kaufman *more than 100 pages* to start talking about the art of writing. That isn't what you want or expect from an "instructional" book.
Also, anyone with a writing background will disagree with many of Kaufman's generalities. He says that one should never ask for a critique of one's work from another writer, because of, among other things, other writers' jealousy of good work. The *day after* I read that, I met with a fellow playwright who gave me two hours of insightful critique on a play I'd just completed. In another place, Kaufman says, "Readers are only conscious of seeing words on a page when the narrative is so boring or so confused that you can't picture it." I can think of James Baldwin and others as counterexamples.
The point is that when you start questioning Kaufman's generalities, he hasn't presented enough material about the craft of writing to make you trust the rest of the book. I can only recommend this book marginally, since some of the material may be useful if only because it reinforces what you've learned elsewhere. But this definitely should not be high on someone's list.
A writer's great read.......1999-12-20
An absorbing, intelligent, funny and revealing book, which makes it a great read for writers as well as readers with no such aspirations. After reading the book I finally got free of any guilt feelings I had for liking "The Fugitive" so much. Thanks to "Plots" I now know what a superb scritpt is behind that film. I wish I could be so sure about any personal potential to ever match its excellence.
Zzzzzz. Wake me up when the author gets to the point........1999-09-02
The only plots and characters in this book are Millard Kaufman's interminable diatribes about the entertainment industry over the past twenty to thirty years. An occasional unsuspecting tip managed to slip through a chapter or two, but quickly segued to the author's unrelatable escapades.
Based on the synopsis, I assumed this book was a "How To" book on writing. The title promises to aide the reader with plot and character development. This however was never realized. The gist of this book was so elusive, I came out of it completely empty handed. If I could have gotten past the first 100 pages, there might have been some useful information. However, my time is too precious to waste on such laborious textbook reading with no point.
I was extremely disappointed and felt the title "Plots and Characters" was completely misrepresentative of the actual content of the book. Instead, the title should have read "Plots and Characters, the autobiography of Millard Kaufman."
superb, witty book from a writer who really knows his stuff.......1999-07-05
As a working screenwriter and WGA member, I'm dismayed to see the growing number of poor quality screenwriting books by authors who have little or no experience in the movie business and are simply trying to make a buck at the reader's expense. Millard Kaufman's wise, biting, funny, edgy book is a breathtaking exception to this sad trend. If you only have money to buy one screenwriting book, buy this one. If you have more money, buy two copies and give one to a friend. Kaufman knows his stuff from decades of working in the trenches. Buy it, read it, enjoy it, learn from it. You won't be sorry. [As a matter of disclosure, I know of Mr. Kaufman as a WGA board member, having seen him speak at meetings. I do not know him personally, however, nor does he know me.]

Book Description
ONE SMALL STEP celebrates the 30th anniversary of NASA's historic July 1969 moon landing, the milestone that was the culmination of John F. Kennedy's 1961 commitment to putting a man on the moon by the end of the decade. Filled with documentary photographs from NASA and the National Air and Space Museum as well as images from film, television, and advertising, this beautiful book looks at our fascination with outer space, the development of NASA, the training of the Apollo 11 astronauts, and the thrilling televised lunar landing that captivated the world. The text also explores the cultural influence of space travel, from 1950s sci-fi movies and 2001: A Space Odyssey, to space-oriented fashions and toys. This delightful, nostalgic volume reminds older readers of the thrill of the moon landing, while it illuminates the space race for younger readers. A lively illustrated volume that takes a fond look back at the historic 1969 moon landing.
Customer Reviews:
For Everyone - A Great Book About The First Moon Landing.......2003-06-04
Released to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, this book presents a nice summary of the first moon landing mission from the training of the astronauts to their post-landing quarantine, through the use of numerous black and white and color photographs and supporting text. This book also includes some brief information about the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions that lead up to the first moon landing. There are also several shorts sections which examine the influence of the space race on several aspects of pop-culture of the 1950's and 1960's, by examining such topics as classic science fiction movies, television shows, space toys and NASA art. Even though this book is relatively short, it is a wonderful and nostalgic look back at one of the greatest moments in the history of the United States of American and all of humanity and is book that can be enjoyed by both young and old alike.

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Guide and information source.......2007-08-12
I have been using windows at home now for 14 years and with each operating system upgrade there's more to learn. I consider myself pretty savvy when it comes to Windows. So what if some people say "it's not definitive by any means," I find that it covers so much and even some things I won't need. I LOVE this book. It is not hard on your eyes, has plenty of diagrams and something I found especially interesting is how virus's, malware and all the nasties can enter your computer and the damage they can cause. I'm the type of woman who is not just satisfied with the "just do it this way" kind of help. I want more meat in the WHY I should do it this way. I use this book along with "Windows Vista: The Missing Manual" That books gives lot's of tips and stuff that has saved me much work and headache. These books work well together
The Only Book Most Windows Vista Users Need.......2007-06-28
Windows Vista: The Definitive Guide is an excellent book. Every Windows Vista User should purchase this book to learn Windows Vista. The book covers everything most users want to know and should know about Windows Vista.
This book is clear and to the point with comprehensive coverage of Windows Vista. It covers all versions of Vista and the many included programs and utilities as well as new security features. It covers Internet Explorer 7 and how to make your own audio CDs and DVD movies. There is an extensive discussion on installation and advanced issues. At a hefty 921 pages it makes a thoroughly detailed reference.
Plus this book is written for easy reader understanding and for enjoyable reading. Great book if you really wish to learn Windows Vista. For administrators, I'd also recommend Stanek's Windows Vista Administrator's Pocket Consultant.
920 pages packed with excellence!.......2007-05-29
William Stanek's pocket consultants are excellent - I've been a reader for years. In looking for a large reference for home, I saw this one - the definitive guide and chose it over Vista Inside Out and Vista Missing Manual. Stanek has a better style, and he understands the software better.
He once again is able to take technical topics and infuse clarity and depth while staying clearly focused. I have been running Vista since beta one, and this book is an excellent reference for those of us already familiar with the Windows operating systems.
In my opinion, this is an excellent book for all skill levels. Beginners will appreciate Stanek's ability to clearly and concisely explain even the most complex topics. The fact the book jumps right into the most important topics for home and office users doesn't hurt either.
Advanced users will find this book makes it easy to quickly get up to speed and to learn the new topics fast. Plus he writes in a friendly easy to understand language, so that you don't get lost in computer jargon. At the same time, he has a very organized and clear style. His details are never off topic and that's refreshing. His sense of what's important and what's not makes it possible for you to actually read the whole book and get all of the useful information out of it.
Pro users will find this book to be an excellent reference and regular reference. This isn't a book for administration though. Stanek's Vista ADministrator's Pocket Consultant is the best one for that.
This is THE MUST HAVE VISTA manual for the home and office. Thank you William Stanek for helping me get the most out of Vista!
Truly the definitive guide.......2007-05-25
Should be the #1 choice for all user levels from beginner to pro! Stanek's Windows Vista Administrator's Pocket Consultant is the book I use every day for admin work. When I'm wanting to play with Windows Vista's multimedia features or tweak the interface, this is the book I reach for. I have a copy at home too. At 900+ pages, it is the best all-around guide I've found.
it truly is.......2007-05-14
Excellent book, full depth, informative and truly a bible on the subject.

Great Book, lots of solid information........2007-04-10
This is a well written book. There is a ton of good information regarding group policy that you will not find anywhere else. The book comes with a resource CD which contains the book in PDF format, which is nice to have. I would recommend this as a must for any windows admin.
Just what I needed.......2007-01-19
I have found this book to be a great resource as I customize our network/station access. It is well written.
number one book I now use.......2006-10-13
After visiting Darren's website and exchanging emails, I bought the book. Sure I've got other GPO books on the shelf (and the table and the floor) but this book as quickly became "THE" number one book I use. Just in the first few days with this book, I was able to resolve 4 of those annoying non-critical items that mean nothing to end-users but annoyed me every time I saw it occur. And in the days after that, I was not only able to get many other backlogged GP items resolved, but even threw in some razzle as well. I especially found their discussion of the GPMC and RSOP modeling very helpful - I've been struggling to master both (and with those other books) and with the short time with the book, I've picked up both quickly. I'm by no means a master on this (yet) but getting there quickly and this book has and will help. Writing style is short, crisp and to the point - the kind I like. The only negative is that my co-workers keep stealing it! :)
Thanks.......2006-03-14
I made a great purchase in Amazon, the books are brilliant and delivery was very fast.
EVERYTHING you'd ever want to know about group policy.......2005-10-25
I got this because it was recommended to me. Plus I couldn't live without Stanek's Windows Server 2003 Inside Out and he's a coauthor of this so I was fairly certain it would be worthwhile. Initially, I spent most of my time in the first few chapters as will most admins. The first chapter covers how group policy works with solid depiction of default policy and what it should/shouldn't be used for. The next chapter drills into everything you need to know about GPO creation, linking, delegation, RSoP, and GPMC. Chapter 3 is where I finally learned how GP processing and refresh work from low to high - something even Moskowitz's book doesn't do a good job of detailing. There's also detailed discussion on copy, import, backup, and restore - again something not covered well in Moskowitz's book. Chapter 4 is about deploying Group Policy with design considerations, best practices, and migration details. Chapter 5 is about hardening clients and servers using policy. I would have paid the cover price for these 5 chapters (200+ pages) alone. The rest of the book drills chapter by chapter into nearly every area of policy, policy optimization, policy customization (550+ pages).

Color enhanced photos of the Holy Land. Includes Key to Regional Units, and Cross Reference to place names from different periods.
Customer Reviews:
Worthwhile.......2006-11-23
Buy this to get a feel of the land, not to reference quick information about an area. There are no specific boundaries, just regional approximations, and mimimal information about each area.
There are two kinds of maps, topography and layer-tint. I didn't find the topography map useful, but the layer -tint ones are great. They've used color to represent depth/height to a very precise level. Most maps are represented three times - Layer tint for 2 periods (different names) and topography combined.
Its all based on two maps, Holy Land South and Holy Land North and uses the same key of 20-odd place names throughout. The next section is a decreased scale of the same map, so of course its divided into an increasing quantity. Etc. The HL S and HL N maps are 1:650,000, then you go down to 1:275,000 & 1:150,000/100,000, all based on NASA information.
There are 8 panoramic photos in most sections. There's virtually no text. (Apparently thats in volume 2.) Both are very difficult to find. Sunday Software sells the first one. [...]
A cd comes with Volume 1 that you can 'fly over' the land. I wouldn't buy it separately for the topography flying. The layer tint flying is great. It also has six or eight great photos of each region (e.g. Judean Shephelah) and many of places. You can measure area, length, etc. and fly at different altitudes. There is text describing each place which is nice, since the atlas has none.
Beautiful and Helpful (but ISBNs are confusing!).......2005-01-26
This is a two-volume work with one ISBN. How confusing!
Both volumes are beautiful, but make sure you know which one you are getting.
VOLUME 1 has a white cover.
VOLUME 2 has a black cover.
Book Description
Nowhere in the world has a more tumultuous history than the Holy Land, that troubled bridge of land that links Asia, Africa and Europe. Today we are used to watching TV news reports covering the regionâs modern-day conflicts. It is scant consolation to know that equally world-shaping battles were being fought there thousands of years ago. These lands have always been a crossroads of peoples and the stage for a clash of cultures, and the region has bred more than its fair share of heroes, villains, invaders, saints and zealots. Their exploits were woven into a series of religious books chronicling the history of the region that later became known as The Bible. Whatever oneâs religious beliefs, the Bible contains a wealth of historical fact and an insight into the contemporary culture of the region. This book investigates the background of the Bible, not only re-telling the classic stories but looking at the latest archeological evidence to provide a thoroughly up-to-date account.

Book Description
The mid-twentieth century witnessed nations across Africa fighting for their independence from colonial forces. By examining black Americans' attitudes toward and responses to these liberation struggles, James Meriwether probes the shifting meaning of Africa in the intellectual, political, and social lives of African Americans. Paying particular attention to such important figures and organizations as W. E. B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King Jr., and the NAACP, Meriwether incisively utilizes the black press, personal correspondence, and oral histories to render a remarkably nuanced and diverse portrait of African American opinion.
Meriwether builds the book around seminal episodes in modern African history, including nonviolent protests against apartheid in South Africa, the Mau Mau war in Kenya, Ghana's drive for independence under Kwame Nkrumah, and Patrice Lumumba's murder in the Congo. Viewing these events within the context of their own changing lives, especially in regard to the U.S. civil rights struggle, African Americans have continually reconsidered their relationship to contemporary Africa and vigorously debated how best to translate their concerns into action in the international arena.
Grounded in black Americans' encounters with Africa, this transnational history sits astride the leading issues of the twentieth century: race, civil rights, anticolonialism, and the intersections of domestic race relations and U.S. foreign relations.

Book Description
Twenty years ago, Working for Wildlife was published to wide acclaim. It remains the definitive history of the beginnings of wildlife consciousness in Canada.
When Banff National Park was established by the federal government in the late 1880s, wildlife protection was not a top priority. By 1922, however, the government had hosted the first Dominion-Provincial Conference on Wild Life Protection, and wildlife preservation had become part of established government policy. Janet Foster shows how, in the early decades of this century, a small band of dedicated civil servants transformed their own goals of preserving endangered animals into active government policy.
Today, the names of these individuals are scarcely known to most Canadians. Yet it was their commitment and dedication that charted the course of today's ecological movement. This new edition of Foster's important book will be welcomed by students of environmental studies, geography, and Canadian history, as well as by members of naturalist clubs and conservation societies. Lorne Hammond's new material places the book in context and provides readers with a sense of what has happened in the field since.
Customer Reviews:
A Environmental Historical Account You Must Read!.......2001-02-05
Working for Wildlife by Janet Foster is a compelling account of the dedicated efforts of early Canadian civil servants who sought to preserve and secure Canadian wildlife. Foster uses substantial amounts of sources (e.g. early travel journals to past government documents) which only aids to the overall aim of this book: wildlife consiciousness and preservation in Canada needs to continue. This book is a must for those interested in Canada's environmental history or in current preservation efforts! It is a wonderful historical narrative that is complimented with interesting illustrations.
I normally wouldn't give anything "5 stars", but I truly enjoyed Foster's book.
