Excellent book.......2006-07-23

This is by far the best book available on films about the middle ages, nothing else like it exists. It's an encyclopedia of 564 films in all languages. The author doesn't rate or rank the films, but provides enough clues to give the careful reader guidance on which are the better and more important films (length of entry, accompanying picture, etc.). Some of these films are extremely obscure and I have no idea how one would go about viewing them. Each film entry has a bibliography for further information and reviews. There is also an Introduction and bibliography. It's good to see a paperback version is now available although it is still costly. For lovers of the middle ages and film this will open new worlds.

The first three quarters of the book offer a highly entertaining and educational overview of sport betting. Moore takes the reader through all of the various types of bets and thoroughly explains how the odds for different sporting events are expressed (e.g. money line, point spread, etc.) He also defines much of the lingo in sports betting and devotes an outstanding chapter to the subject of examining (and debunking) many popular misconceptions.

However, Moore's betting system (the "Blindfold Method"), which he uses the last quarter of the book to unveil, is amusing at best. His theory, which suggests that bettors can exploit "soft lines" between different bookmakers, assumes that significant variations in odds can be found regularly ("one or two games per week"). In practice, this does not occur. Most bookmakers are well aware of the Vegas line for all sporting events and manage their betting imbalances by using "lay-off" operations instead of simply changing their lines (a fact completely ignored in the book). As with all betting systems, it is worthwhile to wonder why the author is writing about them instead of using them to make untold millions. For those that do put their faith in Moore's system, the "Blindfold Method" could not be more aptly named.

These cryptograms, from the National Puzzlers' League, won't be easy because the creators have taken pains to remove the easiest steps usually available to solvers. Regularly occurring articles and conjunctions are gone; the sentences often don't even have the rhythms of ordinary speech. But that will make the reward even sweeter once the answers are found.

I loved Sit & Solve Cryptograms, but I was very disappointed with S&SC#2. The authors were more interested in finding quotes that didn't contain words like "the" than they were in finding interesting and meaningful quotes. Most were just a bunch of jibberish. Also, the font used is very small and close together, making it very difficult to read what you've solved.

A book on general VoIP.......2006-08-10

This book is a non-technical book on VoIP that explains to the reader what VoIP is and why companies and individuals can benefit from it. It talks about cost saving using VoIP. In my opinion there are 2 benefits from VoIP: cost saving and (extra data-voice) features. The author could have written a bit more about (extra possible convergence) features. If you want a technical book for implementing VoIP, there are others more suited to your needs. The gateway part discussed in another review can be found (theoretically, not practically) in Voice over the packet network from Wright. Mr. Kelly's book was to the point, concise and comprehensable. An excellent primer. The review using a lot of abbreviations and technical terms was not to the point, since it just sums some terms whose meaning can be looked up on for instance wikipedia. The basic function of these terms is discussed in general in this book. (The reviewer sums a lot of Voice codecs for instance.)

Good Introductory Book.......2005-11-10

The basic technology of the conventional telephone system has been around since the very beginning. You make a call and you get a dedicated communications channel to the instrument at the other end. And in the beginning that was indeed a physical wire. This wiring circuit was physically switched to your phone and stayed there until you hung up. Later Bell Labs was set up to discover how to get more signals through a wire than just one message at a time. Everyone knew that you could get more signal through a wire than just one phone call. And running all that wire was expensive, especially when it ran underwater across the Atlantic.

Step forward a few decades. The internet isn't circuit switched like this. Instead it's packet switched. A packet of data has it's own address as to where it's supposed to go and is thrown up on the network. It makes its way to the intended receiver. That's the way this message got to you. Suppose instead that that packet was a little tidbit of digitized voice. With the proper instrument on the receiving end (let's call it a telephone) the data is converted back into voice.

That's what VOIP is all about. To learn the details, buy this book. It's a complete description of what it's all about from equipment, procedures, and a bit of the background technology.

Only one last comment -- keep at least one regular, old fashioned, hard wired (not cordless) telephone around. If you have a fire, that knocks the power out, you want something that will let you call 911. Note that the authors say the same thing on pages 44 & 225.

Well, one more last thing. The cost savings on VOIP are difficult to estimate. SBC just came around here and offered 500 minutes a month of nationwide long distance for $10 a month. But if Grandma or the Grandkids live overseas, the cost savings are great. The book talks about this on page 50.

VERY High Level Stuff.......2005-10-23

This book isn't for technical people looking to implement a VoIP solution. It doesn't even define the terms one typically finds in eBay auction descriptions. For example, a typical description for a VoIP phone contains statements like:

- Support popular vocoders including G.723.1 (5.3K/6.3K), G.729A/B, G.711 (a-law and u-law), G.726, G.728, and wide-band G.722 (Model 102D).
- Support Silence Suppression, VAD (Voice Activity Detection), CNG (Comfort Noise Generation), Line Echo Cancellation (G.168), and AGC (Automatic Gain Control)

There is no introduction to this terminology in the book. Only a few paragraphs on SIP and nothing on H.323, SCCP, or IAX. Nothing about setting up gateways or servers. No mention of Asterisk or Digium cards or Skype.

According to the back cover the author is a business professor which is likely the reason for the lack of technical material. I get the impression he is well-versed in traditional telephony systems but his actual hands-on experience with VoIP systems is very limited if it exists at all.

Nice read to explore VoIP for organizations..........2005-09-26

Businesses and organizations have the potential of saving large numbers of dollars if they move to running their phone system with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). But to pull it off, you really do need to have an understanding of how it all fits. VoIP For Dummies by Timothy V. Kelly does a nice job of getting you there.

I've had the opportunity to read and review a number of VoIP books lately. Many of them have been more geared towards the consumer application of VoIP with services like Skype and Vonage. The business titles have been more into technical details of VoIP implementations in an organization. This book fills a nice niche on the business side. Kelly effectively takes the reader through phone technology, both past and present. Building on that information, he then transitions into how VoIP offers alternative solutions that save a lot of money. The book doesn't go into details on packages like Vonage, but you'll walk away understanding the entire spectrum of phone systems and how to plan for a successful VoIP implementation.

I'd see this book being a good read for a networking or communications professional who wants to explore VoIP for their company. It'd also be a good read for someone who wants to put VoIP to work for them in their house, but also want to know exactly how phone systems work. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who just saw a Vonage commercial and wants to sign up right now. There are better titles out there for those types of consumers.

Bottom line... really good read for the right audience. I don't think I've seen a book this readable that explains telephony in a way that makes it understandable for someone who hasn't worked for Ma Bell for years...

This volume presents the first full-scale treatment of the only instance in history where African blacks, seized by slave dealers, won their freedom and returned home. Jones describes how, in 1839, Joseph Cinque led a revolt on the Spanish slave ship, the Amistad, in the Caribbean. The seizure of the ship by an American naval vessel near Montauk, Long Island, the arrest of the Africans in Connecticut, and the Spanish protest against the violation of their property rights created an international controversy. The Amistad affair united Lewis Tappan and other abolitionists who put the "law of nature" on trial in the United States by their refusal to accept a legal system that claimed to dispense justice while permitting artificial distinctions based on race or color. The mutiny resulted in a trial before the U.S. Supreme Court that pitted former President John Quincy Adams against the federal government. Jones vividly recaptures this compelling drama--the most famous slavery case before Dred Scott--that climaxed in the court's ruling to free the captives and allow them to return to Africa.

Really Poor!.......2005-01-10

Pay close attention to the other reviewer's comments. This IS one dry, boring book. And that is a shame because this event is a signal event in the course of our Nation's history. This 1839 mutiny by black Africans aboard a Spanish slave ship resulted in a trial before the US Supreme Court that pitted former President John Quincy Adams, who came out of retirement to defend the Africans, against the federal government. Importantly, this trial was held during the time in which the Gag Rule was in effect within the United States Congress, i.e., it was illegal to simply speak about slavery within Congress.

It is a shame that this, the most famous and compelling slavery case before Dred Scott, is dealt with so poorly in this book

Great story robbed of its impact.......2004-02-17

Mutiny on the Amistad: The Saga of a Slave Revolt and Its Impact on American Abolition, Law, and Diplomacy by Howard Jones.

In July 1839, a group of Africans that had been illegally imported into Cuba used violence to take over the Amistad while it was transporting them from Havana to Puerto Príncipe. In August, the Amistad and the Africans were seized off Long Island. These events set off a judicial, legislative, and diplomatic battle that would not be completely resolved until the Civil War ended slavery in the United States. Mutiny on the Amistad looks at the laws, issues, and people involved in this landmark case.

The key questions are: Who has jurisdiction over the case? Are the Africans legally slaves? If so, who has the rights to them? Are they "salvage," like the Amistad? Will the case worsen the relations with Spain and strengthen Great Britain's claims in Cuba? Will it become the catalyst the abolitionists need to give them and their cause credibility with the northern public? And how will Martin Van Buren's administration deal with such a controversial case in a re-election year?

While the case attracted the attention of abolitionists like Arthur and Lewis Tappan and John Quincy Adams; the administration of Martin Van Buren and even those of some of his successors; and several governments, including those of Spain and Great Britain, Jones's repetitive treatment of the story robs it of much of its drama. For example, he makes the declarative statement that the Van Buren administration's focus was solely on re-election and ensuring the Amistad case did not interfere with that objective more than a dozen times. Some of the primary source quotes do not seem well selected to expand upon the contemporary view; in too many cases, quotes consist of one or two words, such as "gross injustice," that are too out of context or are such common expressions that they become meaningless. The best quotes come, not from the case or the participants, but from the various southern, northern, and abolitionist publications; these headlines reveal contemporary perceptions, beliefs, and biases. As for the participants, the only voice that seems to express any passion is that of John Quincy Adams, who is clearly emotional about the abolitionist cause.

In the meantime, the voices of Joseph Cinqué and the rest of the Africans-the subjects of the entire controversy-are heard only rarely, primarily through letters to the abolitionists complaining about the poor conditions they are subjected to in prison. It is not clear if this is because their testimony was generally deemed irrelevant (they seldom speak for themselves) or if their feelings and thoughts are poorly documented because of the language and literacy barriers they initially face. Jones does try to interject them periodically, but during the long passages in which they are missing the reader feels as though the case has become an exercise in legal argument without victims.

Ultimately, it is not clear what the Amistad case accomplished. For many in the north, Cinqué and the other Africans are objects of both curiosity and sympathy, but it is not apparent that the Amistad case significantly advanced the cause of abolition-in itself an irony since Cinqué and company were never legally slaves (one point that the courts and even the district attorney agree upon). Jones asserts that the case raised public awareness of the conflict between natural law (such as man's right to freedom and to kill to obtain it) and positive law (such as that enabling slavery and preventing slaves from rebelling). The scope of Jones's research and quotations, save those from newspapers, does not support this; there is little presented to show that the case was discussed every day in ballrooms, parlors, and bars or that the general public's perception was permanently altered. What is clear, however, is the racism that is prevalent throughout. Even some of the abolitionists, most of whom are spiritual leaders who find slavery an abomination against God, do not consider Africans their equals.

The facts of the case are all here, along with much of the background. Some of the conclusions seem incomplete. Throughout, one gets the impression this could have been a shorter, more succinct, and, more importantly, a more dramatic and tightly argued book had Jones or his editor cut the repetitions, redundancies, and minutiae and focused on a more cohesive discussion of the relevant specifics of the case and its effects on the public, the U.S. government, and policy. As it is, in Jones's hands this case appears less interesting and less important historically than it probably was, and even the source of all this, Cinqué and his comrades, lose their three-dimensionality-their humanity, as it were. If you are interested in the Amistad case and in the story of the abolitionist movement, this is probably a must-read-but don't stop here.

Dry, but informative........2000-05-08

I saw the movie, and it performed its function well: it piqued my interest. But, of course, being a dramatization, it was not bound by little things like facts; it took the basic story, and made it as interesting and dramatic as possible.

This caused me to develop an interest in the subject, and a curiosity as to what the actual truth of the story was, and this book served admirably to answer that question.

If you're interested in an entertaining story that has drama, characterization, and closure, see the movie. But if you're interested in historical facts, and literal truth rather than symbolic truth, read this book.

Exceptional historical account of the Amistad........1999-01-07

Mutiny on the Amistad by Dr. Howard Jones is an exceptional piece of historical research. For the reader who wishes to read an exceptional historical treatise buy the book. One fully comprehends the the roles of Spain, England, the United States and the cruelty of the slave trade. After reading this book one can comprehend how race initially was and still is a significant factor in the cultural life and politics of the United States. Dr. Jones is to be congratulated for a balance historical presentation and insightful view of cultural history as well...if you are seriously interested in the events of the Amistad and the world that created this incident, you will greatly appreciate Dr. Jones' scholarship. I am grateful that a serious historian has given us such a fine account of the Amistad.

The more I use this dictionary, the more I come to like it. It's handy to have a specific dictionary for scientific and technical terms, and I feel more complete with this by my side. The coverage is comprehensive, the layout is clean and easy to read, and the added illustrations are a nice touch.

I would also recommend the McGraw-Hill Concise Encyclopedia of Science & Technology as a nice supplement.

The dictionary, as I expected, is excellent. I can easily and directly grasp the clear concept of meanings without imaging in my mother tongue, Japanese. Each explanation with the technical field is very concise and accurate. I believe that the dictionary helps me to perfectly understand the target words, for translating from English to Japanese, equivalent to those of an educated English speaker. Then, this will automatically make my task much easier.
Hopefully, I will also be able to obtain CD-ROM, which can be installed in my computer, Windows ME/MS-Word, for accelerating my job.
