personal view of country music history being made.......2005-10-11
I attended this book's release party, which was also a birthday party for Tillman Franks. It was a wonderful day, filled with great music. As Faron Young's biographer, I made many contacts who were later helpful to me. Franks wrote an important story, and I enjoyed reading about all the familiar names. What detracted from the book was its lack of editing--numerous typos and other errors. Still, it contains much valuable information about people like Jerry Kennedy, Glenn Sutton, David Houston, Johnny Horton, Claude King, and many others.
A MUST HAVE BOOK FOR COUNTRY MUSIC FANS!!!!.......2004-02-16
This book was so easy to read and I really could not put it down until I was finished! Tillman Franks did a great job of telling his story and it is absolutely fascinating. I can highly recommend this book!
A Legend Writes About Legends ..........2001-04-11
This is one of those books that is long overdue. I was just beginning in radio when I first met Tillman Franks. It was through this legendary bass-fiddle player, personal manager of super stars, songwriter and country music promoter ... all-in-one ... that I met most of those mentioned in this book. Tillman was not only "there when it happened" ... in many instances, he was responsible for many good things in country music "happening" in the first place! It was through Tillman that I first met Elvis. I would appear on several show with 'Old El'. It was also Tillman who introduced me to Johnny Horton, David Houston and so many others. Although I never met my idol, Hank Williams, Sr., Tillman Franks was also responsible for much of Hank's super stardom. This book, written in the easy, Louisiana speaking style of the author, not only takes you backstage with so many legends, it takes you to the dressing rooms! Yes, Tillman was there when it happened ... and I'm glad he was. You don't have to be a fan of country music to enjoy this very good book. It's musical history, told by a man who belongs in our Country Music Hall-of-Fame ... which will eventually "happen", of course.

Book Description
Drawing on his more than thirty years of experience (including a record four Super Bowls) as the NFL's top referee, Jerry Markbreit describes the hard-hitting, fast-paced NFL action from a perspective few others can match. Filled with humorous anecdotes as well as his opinions on controversial subjects and players and coaches, this book is the first comprehensive look at pro football officiating from the official's point of view -- and Markbreit's homage to the sport he has helped define.
Customer Reviews:
one of the few Honest REF's.......2003-01-20
I'm not crazy about most Pro Ref's in any sport but Jerry Markbreit is one of the few that I always respected the way He called a game.nothing out of the ordinary when He was ref of a Game or a big game.I enjoyed the way He takes you too the field.
The best referee in the history of the game........2002-10-22
At one point in Markbreit's book, he mentions being surprised when someone recognized him on the street. This shocked me. Does he not know he's the best ref in the league?
I remember my dad first learning to recognize Markbreit (though at that time we thought his name was Markwright), and knowing that if he was officiating the game, the calls would be accurate and fair. In this book, you find out why - because he cared deeply about learning his job and performing at the absolute top level. As my dad says, "Quality of officiating usually exceeds quality of play" - this in response to the occasional bad call by a well-meaning official. When Markbreit was in charge, the truth was that "quality of officiating ALWAYS exceeds quality of play".
This book takes you through Markbreit's entire career as a ref, beginning with covering intramural football at his college, and through the NFL and multiple Super Bowls. You'll also learn the basics about how officating works, how the NFL works to ensure accurate, consistent officiating (hint: if you saw an error on TV Sunday, they'll see it on tape on Monday), and how Markbreit made it to the top of his field.
If you're a Markbreit fan, this is probably already on your bookshelf. If you're a football fan at all, and have ever even thought about what it takes to ref an NFL game, this book is for you.
Markbreit is a five-star ref. This is a four-star book for the kinds of things that make a co-written autobiography not five-star fare. It's no worse than any other co-written autobiography, and better than most, but not quite five-star material. Still, the book is excellent and will be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates the game.
No need to review this call.......2002-01-16
Jerry Markbreit is not only a veteran NFL official but an insightful author who knows how to make the game (and the rules) a wonderful read. So many "bios" are filled with fluff, but this one tells grat stories, the kind you wish you'd hear from the so-calld expert talking heads on TV. I loved this book as much as his first one, which is now rightfully a collctor's item. Anyone who considers themselves and NFL fan will enjoy this book as well as his feature "Ask Jerry Markbreit" on the Chicago Tribune's web site...Great stuf. Thank you, Mr. Markbreit.

One Of The Best.......2006-05-25
One of the best works on the martial arts film genre. An absolute essential guide for genre buffs.
From Bankruptcy to Buyout.......2001-07-13
Well, after the original publisher going under and a new one taking up the slack, the long-promised book is finally out with the full story from China, Hong Kong, Japan, and America. As promised, the new book takes the tale full circle, from its auspicious Wong Fei Hong beginnings to the worldwide triumph of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Not just one actor, one director, and one era, but a whirlwind tour of them all, through the Venoms, Master Killer, and women warriors to Sammo, Jet, Yuen, and all the rest. There's even a color photo section with some incredibly rare images. Perfect? Well, no. I wish there had been more from the HK independant producers, the lesser known Shaw Brothers directors, an index, and a "worst of" list (to go along with the "best of" one). But considering what the book went through on the long road to publication, it held up remarkably well. Enjoy!

ZINES! Volume One: Incendiary Interviews with Independent Publishers (Zines!)
ASIN: 1859841589 |
Book Description
The subterranean world of zines uncovered in words and pictures Slug & Lettuce, Pathetic Life, I Hate Brenda, Dishwasher, Punk and Destroy, Sweet Jesus, Scrambled Eggs, Maximunrocknroll -- these are among the thousands of publications which circulate in a subterranean world rarely illu-minated by the searchlights of mainstream media commentary. In this multifarious underground, Pynchonesque misfits rant and rave, fans eulogize, hobbyists obsess. Together they form a low-tech publishing network of extraordinary richness and variety. Welcome to the realm of zines. In this, the first comprehensive study of zine publishing, Stephen Duncombe describes their origins in early-twentieth-century science fiction cults, their more proximate roots in 60s counter-culture and their rapid proliferation in the wake of punk rock. While Notes from Underground pays full due to the political importance of zines as a vital web of popular culture, it also notes the shortcomings of their utopian and escapist outlook in achieving fundamental social change. Packed with extracts and illustrations from a wide array of publications, past and present, Notes from Underground is the first book to explore the full range of zine culture and provides a definitive portrait of the contemporary underground in all its splendor and misery.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Introduction to the World of Zines.......2007-06-12
This book is a must-read for all art students and should also prove helpful to students of journalism and other fields. It offers an excellent insight into the whys and hows of zines while also maintaining a critical perspective. If you don't know what a zine is, you will find out. If you do know, you will get a deeper understanding of the history of zines and what they have morphed into since their heyday.
Zines refelct what happens when anyone can publish. Much as we might like to believe that this is the answer to corporate news and other canned information, zines turn out to me more personal expression and less a matter of getting you better news than the big agencies. But, that said, they offer just about every perspective conceivable. And, for those self-publishers who stick with them, they can be the beginnings of projects that allow them to find a productive, creative place in society. Of course, some will keep doing zines forever and a day. Whether zines or a "real job" become one's destiny, zines still serve as a forum for dissent and dissemination. And they and the people behind them are worth knowing about.
A poltical approach towards the underground scene.......2000-01-24
underground culture born out of opposition to the mainstream media of the comsumer culture and the alienation caused by the whole capitalist culture is analysed in Duncombe's book in great detail.
The making of it,the meaning of it and the paradoxes and drawbacks it has are all introduced.
pros and cons well defined.Duncombe also draw the limits of the underground scene.I agree with his pessimisim about fanzine writers doing nothing more than just being politics by themselves.[what i mean is fanzine writers dont need to take political action as making a fanzine is keeping them busy (mind and time)]
What is most successful about this book is he didnt just write about the world of fanzines but explored through the social/economic/political structure of the USA. As a political science student and a fanzine writer i share his views concerning the new world order as an everchanging, imposing and even assimilating fact.(is it new?)
Well, i really liked the book even though at times i felt like he is repeating all again well i guess this happens when explaining such complex things (as economic, olitical things not fanzines)
Elif Ozgen
enough with the academic analysis already.......1999-04-14
blah blah blah what is up with this. zines are rad and shut up with the sociopolitcoeconomico crap. who would want to read this when they could be reading something real?
The best book about zines yet written........1999-01-26
This is a sobering, inspiring book. Duncombe shows us the boundless potential of zines and zine culture. At the same time he diagnoses the failure of zines to reach out and become relevant to people outside our little "underground". All the effort and enthusiasm that we pour into zines is a small revolution, but if we all joined forces and poured that effort into a movement, we could truly change the system rather than just complaining and waging futile rebellion against it. This book should be required for any would-be revolutionaries, punks, zine creators, and thinking human beings.
he doesn't dumb it down.......1999-01-21
Disagreeing with a recent online review, this book is valuable for its sociological scholarly analysis. Essentially every other book currently existing on the topic of zines is nothing more than a very limited and stilted collection of samples from zines every zinester worth their salt has already heard of ad nauseum. While Duncombe is a little heavy on the utopic and overly optimistic naivete in regards to the ability of alternative media subcultures to change the dominant mainstream as we know it, it was very refreshing to read a book about zines that didn't seem to feel the necessity to "dumb it down" for the zine kids, many of whom are exceptionally bright. This is certainly worth checking out if you do a zine and are into thinking, instead of regurgitating the same old, same old, as far too many zines do.

Customer Reviews:
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Creating a Web Page & Blog.......2007-03-13
Although I have read other articles and books on Creating a Web Page, I still felt I was an "Idiot" before reading Paul McFedries book. It is well laid out and explains everything in simple language, so much so that I now understand what is involved, rather than just blindly following HTML. Although I read the book from beginning to end, it is possible to pick it up at any point if you want to learn a particular part of web design. This is a book that will also act as a reference that you go back to time and again as necessary. I now feel I have moved up a grade and would recommend the book to anyone else who felt they were in the same position.
Best book of its kind.......2006-04-25
I tried a bunch of the basic books on website and blog creation which covered the same subjec matter and content, and this one was definitely the best. McFedries presents his info in clear, precise terms. He seems to know what is important to learn and what isn't for the beginner/intermediate web designer. He is also funny (which all the idiot and dummy books are designed to be) but he is appropriately funny without being condescending or using really lame humor as some other books in these series tend to do. Also recommended at this level are Learn HTML in a Weekend and Blogger (which only covers the google Blogger program).
Creating a Webpage & Blog.......2005-08-09
This is a great book for beginners looking for information on how to start a website or blog for the first time. Paul McFedries walks you through step by step into HTML basics, a necessity for web page and blog structures. If a reader is wanting to learn HTML, basic web site knowledge, and javascripts this is the book to read. Paul McFedries is funny, knowledgable and, easy to follow.
Great source of web and blog wisdom.......2005-06-08
The point of this book, as is true in general of the Complete Idiot's Guide series, is to give a gentle, non-intimidating, and often humorous introduction to its topic. It's meant to help people who really know nothing about the web and about blogging create something that looks nice and accomplishes whatever purpose they have in mind for it. And in this, I believe this book succeeds beautifully.
Since you can so easily find a listing of book topics in the information Amazon provides, I'll just mention some of the things that particularly caught my attention in this book. One of those was the section on blogs. None of the other HTML books I've read have discussed the issue (probably because this is the most recent of them, put out in 2004). Not only does McFedries get into the how of blogging, but he also gets deeply into the social and historical details. There's plenty of information on formatting, programs, services, etc., but there's also great stuff in here about finding and building your audience, focusing on a topic or two, deciding on your posting frequency, writing interesting entries, getting along with other bloggers, and so on. I read this section with rapt attention.
Some CIG and For Dummies books make the mistake of providing what I call "perishable resources." That is, they tell you about a couple of specific hosting providers or whatever. I refer to these as perishable because by the time you read the book those companies have probably shut down, been bought, or changed enough that everything is different. For the most part McFedries doesn't make that mistake. Instead he tries to tell you how to find this sort of information on the web yourself, so you'll be able to figure out who is most currently a good choice.
There's a chapter in here on "the elements of web page style." Before I got to this chapter I was a little worried (this is where that intro line about the review score comes in). There are a lot of sites out there on the web that go crazy with wild fonts, bold and italics all over the place, frobbies that only work on one browser type or another, lots of huge images that take forever to load, horrid noises that play without asking first and scare your cats off of your lap (okay, I have some personal pet peeves here), and so on, and it seemed to me like all of McFedries' enthusiasm for the web tools at one's disposal could contribute to that. But then he wrote this wonderful chapter in which he explains things to help you make your web page appeal to visitors, and he covers a lot of these things in there.
I think this is a fantastic introduction to web site and blog creation--in particular the wide world of blogging, since there are so few other resources on that subject. I hope that McFedries continues to do revised versions of this book as the need arises, because this is a valuable resource.

Book Description
This is one of the first monographs to present a comprehensive study of the natural history of a single high-profile lizard species, the popular Malagasy panther chameleon. It is the first attempt to come to grips with the complex, often confusing, color variation of the species and illustrates these variations with 69 beautiful color photographs. The authors have drawn from the scattered literature, their extensive experience, and experimental study in the field and laboratory to provide original information and conclusions. They emphasize both the known and the unknown, presenting clear avenues for future investigation. They make a case for the panther chameleon as a model organism with value for research, education, herpetoculture, and conservation. This work also reviews the history of keeping chameleons in captivity and provides up-to-date guidelines for captive management of the panther chameleon based on the authors' own multigeneration captive colony.
Customer Reviews:
The guidebook of choice for truly serious herpetologists.......2004-07-16
The collaborative effort of Gary W. Ferguson (Professor of Biology, Texas Christian University), herpetology expert James B. Murphy, Jean-Baptiste Ramanamanjato (Fauna Bidiversity Officer,QIT Madagascar Minerals, Fort Dauphin, Madagascar), and Achille P. Raselimanana (Program Biodiversity Officer, World Wildlife Fund, Madagascar), The Panther Chameleon: Color Variation, Natural History, Conservation, And Captive Management is an in-depth scientific reference and resource to all aspects of this species of chameleon. 69 stunning color photographs illustrate this technical reference with information on everything from thermal biology and social behavior to proper nutrition, conservation issues, necessary housing and environmental considerations for captive chameleons, reproductive and breeding issues, and much more. Charts of highly specific color variations as described on a 360-degree color wheel distinguish The Panther Chameleon as the guidebook of choice for truly serious herpetologists. A highly recommended work for anyone involved in the captive husbandry of panther chameleons, especially since it draws directly upon the senior author's own management of a multigeneration captive colony.

* Essential reading for academics, policymakers, donor agencies, and activists involved in water privatization issues around the world
In recent years, as globalization and market liberalization have marched forward unabated, the global commons continue to be commodified and privatized at a rapid pace. In this global process, the ownership, sale, and supply of water are increasingly the flashpoints for debates and conflict over privatization, and nowhere is the debate more advanced or acute than southern Africa.

The book then presents case studies of important water privatization initiatives in the region, drawing out crucial themes common to water privatization debates around the world including corruption, gender equity, and donor conditionalities. This is book is powerful and necessary reading in our new age of commodity.

Hidden theories, troubled waters: International relations, the 'territorial trap', and the Southern African Development Community's transboundary waters [An article from: Political Geography]

Description:
Much of the literature examining transboundary watercourses employs an implicit international relations framework. This literature, while helpful in understanding aspects of transboundary watercourses, routinely obfuscates many crucial factors. Specifically, such analyses are marked by: (i) a mis-theorization of the hegemonic structures at work, (ii) undue pessimism regarding the propensity for multi-lateral cooperation, (iii) an assumption that conflict and cooperation exist along a progressive continuum, (iv) a tenet that conflict is restricted to state competition, and thus a neglect of state collusion in violence against certain citizens, and (v) a depoliticization of ecological conditions. Bringing a geographical critique to bear on the IR framed literature illuminates such deficiencies and leads to a more grounded and holistic analysis of the politics of shared watercourses. A case study of the management of shared water resources in the Southern African Development Community is used to demonstrate, in a concrete way, what is obfuscated in the implicit IR approach and how a geographical critique is able to provide an analysis that is both more critical, and more insightful. ul.
