5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for starting a business.......2000-09-28

Highly recommend. Most books skip the nitty gritty of starting a business. This book takes the mystery out of starting one. Plus, it has an "in the trenches" chapter on how to write a business plan. The authors of this book grew Fuel Tech (FTEK) into a business with a market cap <$250 million. It was fascinating reading how Edward Gazvoda and Bill Haney thought about their venture before making headlines. This book is credited with inspiring the creation of entrepreneurial clubs around the globe. Best of all, it is a business book that is entertaining. Enjoy! I am going to read it again.

As head coach at Arizona State, Devine accumulated a 27-3-1 record. From 1958 to 1970, he guided Missouri to a 93-37-7 mark. College football fans everywhere will be interested in reading this insightful story.

          5 out of 5 stars A great American life.......2006-02-19

I picked up this book because I'm a Notre Dame fan and wanted some insight into the six season tenure of Coach Dan Devine. Not knowing much about his accomplishments in life I found his story to be an inspiring tale involving youthful hardships and exciting success due to hard work. At the college level, wherever he went, great things happened. Then when the NFL came calling he found himself struggling. This reminded me of his successor at Notre Dame, Gerry Faust, who himself had great success at one level (in his case, high school) only to find that success out of reach at the next level.

But Coach Devine takes us on his jounrey into the Army Air Corps, college, and his years at Arizona State, Missouri, and Notre Dame. He talks too briefly for my taste on decisions such as switching the Fighting Irish to green jerseys in 1977.

Nevertheless, I breezed through the book in no time because it was an enjoyable account of his life, which was certainly worthy of being published.

4 out of 5 stars Confessions from an Ex Packer Head Coach.......2003-05-24

Devine finally confesses that he leaked a untrue story to Time Magazine and SI about how a crazed Packer fan had killed his dog. The real story was that he lived in rural Wisconsin and allowed his dog run loose. The dog was known to have been killing farm neighbor's ducks. He was warned several times and then one morning when the dog was attempting to kill more ducks the farmer shot the dog (not hanged, not skewered). In his confession he admits it was HIS FAULT for allowing the dog to continue to roam unsupervised.

You can't doubt his coaching success, but to allow this story to continue on for decades before coming clean sure leaves plenty of doubt about his character. As a former Notre Dame Alum and born and raised Packer fan, I still think he was one hell of a college coach. This is a very good book and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of college football. I am glad that he ultimately came clean on that ugly story that tarnished the residents of Green Bay and the neighboring farm communities.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, Great man, Great family.......2000-12-28

This is a great book of a great man who managed to coach and raise a wonderful family with the help of a wonderful wife. There should be more families like this.

5 out of 5 stars Great film guide for low-budget "splatter horror".......2001-07-09

This film guide, published in 1989 by Fantaco Enterprises, was released in response to the explosion in low-budget indie "splatter horror" following 1978's HALLOWEEN. Films listed in this guide are mainly post-BLOOD FEAST (the early 1960s film that introduced "splatter" to horror).

Many films in this book are marginal and obscure, the kind not found Maltin's film guides. The reviews are written in an off-the-cuff manner, and I don't agree with them all. But if you've an interest in obscure gory horror films, this book is a valuable reference tool.

Deep Red is probably the third most complete "post-BLOOD FEAST" horror film guide, after John Stanley's Creature Feature Guides and the Overlook Encyclopedia (both of whisl cover all of horror). And occassionaly, you may even find a film in Deep Red the other two don't know of.

          It's a shame it's not been updated, or re-released.

              4 out of 5 stars Authors Comments.......2007-08-17

I am the author of this book, and as some of the reviews indicate, I'm horribly embarassed by the quality of editing that this book received. I assure you that the manuscripts turned in are not what ended up on paper.
This is the reason I chose to not write a Vegas 7 Editing Workshop book, because of how this book was treated.
Please note that the majority of the reviews found here are regarding typographical errors, and at least one of the reviews here is significantly exaggerated, in my opinion.
My apologies to those that felt slighted by the typographical errors in the book. Although the publisher hired an editor to edit the book (which I did not see in galley or blue-line form), I am solely responsible for any errors, typographical or factual.

              5 out of 5 stars Vegas 6 Editing Workshop - a good read!.......2007-04-06

I have been using Vegas now for about a year, and had no formal training in editing before that. When I discovered someone had written a book which explained a lot of the in's and out's of it, I bought it in the hopes I could expand my knowledge and experience.
I did the right thing! This book is chock full of goodies, and I know I have only scratched the surface. The accompanying DVD is just what the doctor ordered! It is now next to my computer at work, to use as my "bible" for Sony Vegas, and, I bring it home every night to try new stuff out.
This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in gaining new insight into Sony Vegas, as well as editing in general. I found it useful and I am sure you will too. Happy editing !!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not written by a teacher NOR reviewed by a proofreader.......2007-03-25

The 3 rating is very generous.

Although the author may know how to use SONY VEGAS 6, he certainly isn't crystal clear about telling the rest of us how to do it.

The book is very poorly organized and not well written. It's the kind of thing that appears to have been written by an artist, not a teacher.
Learning from it requires deciphering what the man has written. A co-author with instructional design expertise should have been used.

Some examples given are visually hideous or not at all worthwhile.

Some print samples in the color section are not captioned at all.

              The included CD is helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Not for beginners-good for those who need to ramp up.......2006-12-13

I'd recommend absolute beginners cut your teeth on Windows Movie Maker or iMovie or similar entry level app. Get some successes and gain a comfort level with the workflow and basic editing techniques. Later, graduate to Vegas, Premiere or Final Cut for more advanced capabilities.

Video editing (like you see in TV) requires a fair amount of learning. As a result this book is not geared for beginners, as the app IMO is not for beginners either. If you are determined, go for it, it's a great creative outlet!

Even with Vegas 7 release, this book is still very relevant and worthwhile if you want to get full use out of Vegas. DSE's knowledge goes beyond the manual. He helps explain WHY, and what tool to use, which the manual does not. The book is right by my side during sessions and it's a great reference.

As for the book, yes does need a good proofreader and some of the illustrations could be ommitted - all fair enough comments. What is off base are complaints about the price. Apparently they have not bought any technical books lately. Keep in mind the years of specialized knowledge you are getting... it's really a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Vegas 6 Video Edit Manual (alias workshop).......2006-11-10

A solid get you up and running manual. There are some typos and awkwardly worded bits but they are few.
The key to Vegas 6 isn't just how to use it but what makes Vegas very different. Vegas is SOUND EDITING which has taken on video. Rather than video based editing with some sound capability. The ability to illustrate a well constructed sound track on a defined time line with images (still & video) is at the heart of it. The manual takes its time getting to this defining difference but then is thorough.

                  Book Description

The Vietnam War was the defining event of recent U.S. history, a tragic struggle that cost the lives of 58,000 Americans and 970,000 Vietnamese. The three-volume Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War, edited by Spencer Tucker, has been hailed as the most comprehensive reference work on that watershed event. Now Tucker has produced an abridged one-volume edition, a miracle of concision that includes virtually all the entries found in the parent volume, in condensed form. Here are more than 900 alphabetically arranged entries--plus over 200 primary source documents--that illuminate every aspect of the Vietnam War. There are entries on Buddhists, defoliation, post-traumatic stress disorder, the fall of Ngo Dinh Diem, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The volume covers military and domestic fronts; air, land, and sea campaigns and battles; weapons, strategies, and tactics; key Vietnamese and American figures; the anti-war movement and international repercussions of the war; and the impact of the war on film, art, literature, and society. The volume also includes important background information, such as the developments that led to U.S. involvement in the war and postwar Vietnamese history to the present. Tucker provides extensive coverage of both American and Vietnamese perspectives, and has incorporated numerous entries by Vietnamese contributors.

The Colorado Plateau of southern Utah, southwestern Colorado, and northern Arizona and New Mexico is the site of some of America's most prized national parks, among them Zion and Grand Canyon. It is also the center of ongoing conflict about the best use of natural resources, as the federal government, Indian nations, and ever-growing municipalities struggle to obtain control of water, minerals, and rangeland. As a former natural-resources attorney and now professor of law at the University of Colorado, Charles Wilkinson knows that struggle well, and his new book provides an on-the-ground overview of some of the most pressing conflicts. Some of his fieldnotes will come as no surprise to Westerners and students of the environment; others come as eye-opening news, whether the fact that Navajo Indian children are regularly bused to schools far away from home, traveling as much as 150 miles a day, or that radioactive waste and fallout from cold-war mining and testing remains a critical danger to public health across the plateau. Wilkinson's findings are often depressing; as he writes, "Thirty-five years ago I saw the West as clean and fresh, open and uncluttered. I no longer see it that way. I love it still, with all my heart, but I fear for it. For it is aging rapidly." Even so, he offers a few success stories to temper the bad news, notably the hard-won designation of large sections of the plateau as protected wilderness, with the promise of more extensive protection to come. --Gregory McNamee

                              Book Description

"This book recounts my journey through the Colorado Plateau, a journey through place and time and self.... During my explorations of more than three decades, I found a land that sears into my heart and soul, a place that has taught me and changed me. I also discovered a land of conflict and endurance, a land that has given birth to one of the great chapters in American history." --from the Introduction

The Colorado Plateau, stretching across four states and covering nearly 80 million acres, is one of the most unique and spectacular landscapes in the world. Remote, rugged, and dry -- at once forlorn and glorious -- it is a separate place, a place with its own distinctive landscape, history, and future.

In Fire on the Plateau, legal scholar and writer Charles Wilkinson relates the powerful story of how, over the past thirty years, he has been drawn ever more deeply into the redrock country and Indian societies of the Colorado Plateau. His work in the early 1970s as staff attorney for the newly formed Native American Rights Fund brought him into close contact with Navajo and Hopi people. His growing friendships with American Indians and increasing understanding of their cultures, along with his longstanding scholarship and experiences on federal public lands, led him to delve into the complicated history of the region.

Wilkinson examines that history -- the sometimes violent conflicts between indigenous populations and more recent settlers, the political machinations by industry and the legal establishment, the contentious disputes over resources and land use -- and provides a compelling look at the epic events that have shaped the region. From centuries of habitation by native peoples to Mormon settlement, from the "Big Build-Up" of the post-World War II era to the increased environmental awareness of recent years, he explores the conquests of tribes and lands that have taken place, and the ways in which both have endured.

Throughout, Wilkinson uses his own personal experiences as a lawyer working with Indian people and his heartfelt insights about a land that he grew to love to tie together the threads of the story. Fire on the Plateau is a vital and dynamic work that is sure to strike a chord with anyone interested in the past or future of the American Southwest.

5 out of 5 stars Indian rights (and red rocks and more) - an unbiased expert's view, contrary to a possible conflict-of-interest reviewer.......2006-01-21

I grew up on the Colorado Plateau, just minutes from the "Big Rez," and Charles Wilkinson paints a detailed social, natural and geologic picture of this land, about as close as you can get to the Third World here in the United States, in some ways.

Having one of the largest American Indian populations in the country, and certainly so going by percentage of the population, Indian relations with whites, whether private citizens or the state and federal governments, form a large part of this area's history. Wilkinson, with extensive experience in Indian law, gives an expert's eye view to how this has played out on the Plateau, especially since the rise of the Indian rights movement in the 1970s.

No less a person that Southwestern Indian-oriented novelist Tony Hillerman praises this work for that very expertise. And Hillerman, who has included Navajos, Apaches, Hopis and Zunis as protagonists in various of his novels, would know biased opinion if he saw it. (Contrary to one reviewer here, John Boyden's apparent conflict of interest in representing the Hopi HAS drawn calls for investigation.)

Wilkinson's exposure of how politically connected Salt Lake City attorney John Boyden sold the soul -- and massive coal mining rights -- of the Hopis out to Peabody Coal while also on retainer to Peabody takes up a good-sized chunk of this book. As Wilkinson was the person who discovered the smoking gun, and that in turn was partial motivation for this book, you can feel his anger in defense of Indian rights come through.

For an outside thumbnail history of this, read this Phoenix New Times story at: http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/Issues/1997-05-01/feature_1.html

The next two factors in this area are the hardness of its natural features and its aridity, as pointed out by explorers like John Wesley Powell. And, per Powell, communal-minded Mormons appear to continue to have the best success of Anglos in dealing with this land.

Then, this area has been America's energy frontier ever since the Manhattan Project at nearby Los Alamos. Much of the country's uranium in the early years of the Atomic Age came from this area. Radiation poisoning, Indian treaty negotiations and environmental hazards are part of that mix.

Oil and natural gas, touched on by Wilkinson, are part of that picture, too, as are logging rights.

Getting back to the American Indian theme, Wilkinson shows how development of these resources has caused fractures in governments of most Southwestern Indian tribes, fractures exacerbated by the fact that their current government structures were imposed by Washington without regard for traditional native systems.

Meanwhile, the start brilliance of red rocks, painted desert, deep canyons and twisting slot canyons serves as the unchanging existential background for this thin-veneered modern story.

NB: Yes, it's commenting about another reviewer, but I highly suspect "Tom Scadden" has an axe to grind, political or otherwise, with his one-star review. Google had only eight links any Tom Scadden; half of them were to his review of this book. And, though he wrote that review three years ago, it's the only book he's reviewed on Amazon. So, take his rating with a huge grain of salt.

And, I have a hunch that I know who this really is. I think it may be Stephen Boyden, younger son of John Boyden, and himself an attorney -- indeed, he is on record as claiming his father did NOT work for Peabody at the same time he worked for the Hopis. If this is actually Stephen Boyden, well, he learned his conflicts of interest out of the cradle, I guess.

                              5 out of 5 stars I like this lawyer........2004-07-19

Its definitely not everyday that I find a lawyer to admire, so Charles Wilkinson is that rare exception. A bit reluctant at first to pick up a first hand account of recent resource and tribal issues on the Colorado Plateau as seen through the eyes of a lawyer, my attitude changed within a few pages. Charles Wilkinson writes with heart! It doesn't take long to see this writer has an obvious emotional investment in the clients and cases he goes to bat for.

The book opens with a telling case of Navajo high schoolers commuting long hours to attend classes. Wilkinson and his firm made the case that long bus rides were leaving students tried before and after class and hurting their grades. With evidence and conviction, they got high schools built on the reservations. With each case recounted, I could sense Wilkinson's attachment to the Colorado plateau and its people grow and grow.

Fire on the Plateau also provides a much broader telling of both the social and natural history of the Four Corners area. But what really set this book apart from others in my mind is Wilkinson's emergence from a lawyer who is just doing his job to someone who bonded to the land and the people he served.

4 out of 5 stars Important Resource for Understanding.......2003-06-04

Anyone with interest in the Four Corners/Colorado Plateau, Native America, Public Land issues, wilderness, law or Western Americana must read this book. Wilkinson's credentials and legacy of work for justice are impeccable. His "Land and Resource Planning in the National Forest" is the best on the subject.

Critics on this site claim that it never happened; that is, Mormon attorney John Boyden never created a conflict of interest by represented Peabody Coal Company and Native America concurrently. (Read: "a Mormon simply wouldn't do it"). Mormons might think themselves irreproachable but greed and the need for glory know no boundaries. The veracity of Boyden's conflict of interest is archived at the University of Utah Marriott Library Special Collections. Anyone can read Boyden's own documents and come to their own conclusion. I have.

Conflict with Peabody or not, the critics have not disputed and cannot dispute the fact that Boyden represented both Hopi and Navajo horrendously over decades, advising them to accept legislation, water and mineral contracts that favored Anglo government and industry -- not the Indian or his land. (I use both "Native American" and "Indian" because some of my Native acquaintances prefer "Indian.") The contracts were so obviously bad and so far below market rate, they were successfully renegotiated many years later.

Wilkinson does a great job of explaining the cultural roots of both Mormons and Native Americans on the plateau that led to such travesties. The ultimate tragedy is that the Hopi and Navajo will never get back any of the plateau land that defines -- or rather defined them culturally.

1 out of 5 stars Don't believe everything you read.......2003-03-31

Being somewhat familiar with the history of the Navajo-Hopi conflict, I was naturally drawn to the premise of this novel which resulted as being a one-sided, extremely inaccurate account of the 20th century Hopi history. After performing my own "due diligence" on the subject, I was appauled to learn that the author's slanderous accusations of attorney John Boyden are not substantiated and grieviously misleading. Peabody Coal has officially denied and submitted written proof that Boyden was never engaged in any "conflict of interest" nor on any payroll while representing the Hopi. I discovered that Wilkinson's mysterious "proof" of Boyden's affiliation with Peabody is painfully erroneous as the author draws awfully creative conclusions from very little evidence.
In 1997, Wilkinson suggested that legal recourse would be sought for Boyden's "devious conduct" against the Hopi, but seven years later, Wilkinson's claims have not been substantiated at any significant level. Why is this? I was very unimpressed to learn that after writing with such conviction and certainty, Wilkinson's "shocking revelation" about Boyden's "misconduct" as a focal point of the novel is and will most likely remain a hollow witch-hunt. I would not recommend that anyone read this novel because of it's poorly executed investigation of John Boyden's service to the Hopi Indian Tribe.

                                Book Description

This book provides a thorough analysis of the scientific, critical, and cultural questions at the foundation of theory-building in communication and other social sciences. Any claim to knowledge, the author explains, can be analyzed in terms of a series of characteristics: the object of its explanation, the explanatory form and evidentiary method employed, its characteristic explanations, the scope of its performance, and its consequences of value. From identifying basic epistemological questions to exploring the impact of the "knowledge industry" on society, the volume offers readers the analytical tools to understand, compare, and evaluate theories and their use both inside and outside the classroom. The book also includes a systematic analysis of communication's most influential theories and traces their genealogies across different content fields and disciplines.

Jim Anderson is one of the better thinkers writing about the study of communication. Like his books on media and the epistemological foundations of communication theory, this work is a classic in the field as much because of its fugue-like writing style as its thorough overview of quantitative and qualitative research methods. His vision of both is washed with a strong moral vision. His discussion of member participation and marginality will give you a sense of his concerns. "Observational distancing can turn people into subjects -- objects of study. Membership requires passion. A stake in the outcomes that affect people. If the researcher is to achieve membership, what happens has to make a difference. the analyst cannot remain objective, detached from the scene" (p. 320). This book is highly recommended for graduate students in communication study.
