Boy or girl, young or old, readers will love reading about Tiger Woods' inspiring rise to the top of the golf world. Overcoming racism, economic hardship, and personal limitations, Tiger leads the pack at an incredibly young age. My 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter and I read this together, and we were all equally enthralled and inspired by Tiger's story. It was accessible without being overly simple. We're looking forward to reading more entries in Matt Christopher's biography series.

"You must drink tea with us tonight." —Sense & Sensibility

Who would not want to sit down with Jane Austen and join her in a cup of tea? Here for the first time is a book that shares the secrets of one of her favorite rituals. Tea figures prominently in Jane Austen's life and work. In fact, the beloved novelist was the keeper and maker of tea in her family. Tea with Jane Austen begins with tea drinking in the morning and ends with tea in the evening, at balls and other gatherings.

Each chapter includes a description of how tea was taken at a particular place or time of day, along with history, recipes, excerpts from Austen's novels and letters and illustrations from the time. The book also reveals how to make a perfect cup of tea!

This is - and there is no doubting this - the vag-iest book I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars Short and punchy book for tea drinkers and Janeites.......2005-10-06

This is a lovely short little book which will not only teach you how to make a good cup of tea but at the same time takes a lovely cultural walk through the historical significance of tea both in society and literature.

The Georgian era really saw the rise in tea as a social institution, which is of course the time of Austen. Kim Wilson manages to extract references to tea in novels and letters using them as examples of its importance at the time, and its use as a literary device.

this has a series of lovely recipes in it which are true to Austen's time, well as true as they can be. Ingredients and measurements not withstanding. But how wonderful to do tea just as Austen did.

This book is highly specialised around Tea and really Austen and perhaps the Jane Austen in the title was supposed to draw in more readers on the Jane Austen bandwagon. However I do think it has merit. Firstly it tended to stick with things of Austen's time and I felt it gave a fairly good discussion of what her life would have been.

It really suffered from lack of illustration, not only throughout the book, but also for the cooking items at the end. I recommend reading this with another illustrated book of Austen's life if you want to see more of the places and things mentioned in here. There is one excellent book I have read recently called Regency Design which (while not on Jane Austen) will illustrate so much of what they used, ate from, drank from and lived in. It is fully illustrated, I think the author is Morley - anyway - a book like that is an excellent accompaniment to lovely short books such as this.

          5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-09-27

Before sitting down with this book, turn to the very last chapter, which explains how to make the perfect cup of tea -- and prepare a whole pot for yourself. Because once you begin reading Kim Wilson's engaging discussion, you'll want nothing so much as a good cup of tea (except, perhaps, a rout cake or Bath bun to go with it) but will not want to put the book down long enough to boil water. "Tea with Jane Austen" is like the best blends of the beverage, its individual components smoothly combining to create a delightful experience richer than the sum of its parts. Primarily a social history of tea in Georgian England, the book also explains how Austen and other authors use tea as a literary device, and includes period recipes with modern conversions. Though extensively researched, this is not dry history -- Wilson's warm, conversational style and gentle humor make the book as entertaining as it is informative. Indeed, the reader feels as if Wilson is our hostess rather than a lecturer as she educates us by turns on tea itself (how it was transported, sold, and prepared) and the social contexts in which it was enjoyed. She also enhances our appreciation for Austen's writings by revealing subtle cues Austen incorporates into tea-drinking scenes that likely escape most modern readers -- but that her contemporaries would have recognized as character-defining elements. Among the many fascinating insights Wilson offers, we learn why the Austens, hardly well-to-do, bought their tea only from one of London's most reputable merchants, that naval officers often brought along their own tea so as to improve conditions aboard ship by indulging in a small comfort of home, and the real reason Mr. Darcy drinks a cup of coffee rather than tea toward the end of "Pride and Prejudice." By the end of the book, you'll be trying to decide which of the intriguing recipes to attempt first, and which Jane Austen novel to read or reread whilst sipping tea (with sugar, but no cream) from a Wedgwood cup.

            Book Description

One of the greatest writers of all time, Jane Austen drew upon her domestic culture to color her works. Food is central to her novels, just as it was to everyday life in Austen's England. And just as her fiction continues to captivate modern audiences, her world of breakfasts and banquets captures the imagination of contemporary readers. Many of her fans will enjoy recreating the meals she describes in her novels, while high school students will similarly gain greater appreciation for her works by learning about her food culture. Through more than 200 recipes, this book transports readers to Jane Austen's England and brings her world to contemporary kitchens. The book begins with some introductory chapters on cooking and eating in Austen's world. It then presents chapters on broad categories of food, such as beef and veal, seafood, pastries and sweets, and beverages. Each chapter includes extracts from Austen's works and from cookbooks of her period, accompanied by easy-to-follow modernized recipes. Some of these are for relatively common dishes, such as:
          • Roast Beef
          • Roast Pork Loin
          • Roast Chicken
          • Apple Pie
          • And more. Others are for more exotic meals, such as:
          • Fricasseed Tripe
          • Neat's Tongue
          • Fried Cowheel and Onion
          • Mutton Hash
          • Liver and Crow
          • Mushroom Ketchup
          • And others. The volume closes with some sample menus; glossaries of ingredients, sources, and special tools; and a bibliography of period cookbooks and modern studies.

This is the only reference I used for the DB2 700 Exam and I passed the exam with 94%, you probably won't need anything else. However if you wish to score really high I would recommend some Internet Searches for the first chapter - Planning. The exam is all too simple and some questions were directly taken from this book.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-11-12

Even for people that thinks that knows everything about DB2, this book is important because it delves into the main subjects that will appear in the exam, but also is useful to give you an overview about what you know, and what you have the opportunity to enhance your skills using other sources.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for Exam 700.......2006-09-28

I took the exam within one month from the day I bought this book and scored 87%. Read the book twice and took the sample test on IBM site.

Fritz Stern has compiled a wide-ranging collection of original source materials written by historians, ancient and modern, that illuminate the nature of history as a discipline and a process. Beginning with Voltaire and Barthold Niebuhr and progressing through Macaulay, Jaures, Turner, Trevelyan, Beard, Barzun, and ending with C. Vann Woodward, Stern focuses on different roles history has assumed over a period of thousands of years as well as the various genres and subtopics in which history has made itself a home. These topics include cultural history, economic history, literature, positivism, materialism, scientific history, relativism and others. Stern opens each chapter and discussion of a new historian with insightful preliminary and background information that helps to set the historian in a better context than if it were not to appear. Other than this, his presence is undetectable, which speaks to his ability as a historian himself to remain detached from his work.

Any university level historiography course needs this work either as a main text or as a supplementary text given its survey-like nature. Stern opens each chapter and discussion of a new historian with insightful preliminary and background information that helps to set the historian in a better context than if it were not to appear. Each featured historian presents or engages a new variety of history, as the title enunciates, and provides further evidence of the depth and breadth of history as a scholarly subject as well as a process spread out over time.

The intense and quite complex nature of the selections make this book a perfect fit for an upper level university or graduate level historiography course. Furthermore, any reader who wishes to supplement any knowledge of history would be well served by this work. High school students intending to pursue history as a major might also read this as a prelude to what lies ahead.

                                    Book Description

A Forest of Time is the first introduction for undergraduates and graduates, Western and Indian history buffs, and general readers to the notion that American Indian societies had vital interests in interpreting and transmitting their own ways for themselves. Through separate discussions of legends and oral histories, creation stories and folktales, it illustrates how various Indian peoples related and commented upon their changing times. Drawing upon his own varied research as well as sampling the latest in scholarship from ethnohistory, anthropology, folklore and Indian Studies, Dr. Nabokov offers dramatic examples of how native peoples put rituals and material culture, landscape, prophecies, and even the English language to the urgent task of keeping the past alive and relevant. Throughout these lively chapters, we also witness the American Indian historical imagination deployed as a coping skill and survival strategy. This book surveys the latest integrating ideas while offering a useful bibliography that opens up, and demands that we engage with, alternative chronicles for America's multi-cultural past. Peter Navokov is Professor in the Department of World Arts and Cultures and American Indian Studies Program at UCLA. He is the author of several books, including Native American Architecture, (Oxford, 1991, co-author Robert Easton) which won the American Institue of Architects honor award and the Bay Area Book Reviewer Association Award. His book Native American Testimony (Thomas Y. Crowell, 1978) was named the American Library Association's Best Book for Young Adults and Library School Journal Best Book 1978 in addition to receiving the Carter G. Woodson Award. His work as a journalist in 1967 earned him prizes from the Albuquerque Press Association and the New Mexico Press Association.

                                    3 out of 5 stars Slow going.......2003-02-05

"A Forest of Time" moved very slowly for me. The continual use of $100 words and one reference after another. During the book it appeared that Nabokov was scrambled in all these references himself. However; if you hang in their, Nabokov does hit on some insightful learning towards the history of American Indians. This book is a slow starter that does finally bring it home in the end. This book will better serve a classroom, rather than, the casual reader looking for fast knowledge of American Indian history.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating, engaging dialogue and sourcebook.......2002-06-08

A Forest Of Time: American Indian Ways Of History by Peter Nabokov (Professor of American Indian Studies and World Arts/Cultures, University of California, Los Angeles) is a college level study of how Native Americans have interpreted and transmitted their own histories in creation stories, folktales, oral histories, and tradition. Individual chapters address a range of subjects from the dynamics of myth versus history, to the value of rituals, and Native American prophecies for the future embedded within tribal culture. A fascinating, engaging dialogue and sourcebook that contributes a unique multicultural perspective on the origin of America and its native peoples, A Forest Of Time is strongly recommended for personal and academic Native American Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.
