Book Description
WRITER AND EDUCATOR Mary Catherine Bateson is best known for the proposal that lives should be looked at as compositions, each one an artistic creation expressing individual responses to the unexpected. This collection can be read as a memoir of unfolding curiosity, for it brings together essays and occasional pieces, many of them previously unpublished or unknown to readers who know the author only from her books, written in the course of an unconventional career.
Bateson’s professional life was interrupted repeatedly. She responded by refocusing her curiosity — by being willing to learn. The connections and echoes between the entries in her book are as intriguing as the contrasts in style and subject matter. The work is grounded in cultural anthropology but shaped by the observation that, in a world of rapid change and encounters with strangers, individuals can no longer depend on following traditionally defined paths.
Willing to Learn is arranged thematically. One section includes a sampling of writings about Bateson’s parents, anthropologists Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson. The longest section focuses primarily on the contemporary United States and deals with life stages and gender. Bateson argues that because women’s lives have changed most radically, women are pioneers of emerging patterns that will affect everyone. Another section deals with belief systems, conflict, and change, especially in the Middle East, and the final section with different ways of knowing. Bateson is a singular thinker whose work enriches lives by bringing fresh, original ideas to subjects that affect all of our lives. Willing to Learn is at once an articulation of and an enduring testament to the artistic creation Bateson has produced pursuing her own life’s work.
Customer Reviews:
What a treat..........2005-03-15
What a treat to find this hardbound collection of the work of Mary Catherine Bateson. Her prose is eloquent. Her ideas are rich and diverse. Her thinking is open, creative and, at the same time, intensely logical. There are selections from some of her best read books, but she also presents some of her hard-to-find material which merits inclusion. Her very interesting life provides the backdrop, but it's how she processes and weaves her observations and experiences into her work that makes these pieces so very illuminating to me. A must for collectors of the writing of the best thinkers of our time.

Book Description
Bobby Jones will stand forever unique in the world of golf, and perhaps even unique in the world of sport. He remained an amateur throughout his amazing career and found himself on the pinnacle of all golf achievements-The Grand Slam-a feat not duplicated by any other golfer to this day. This accomplishment might have constituted a seat to rest on for the ordinary man but, for Bobby, it merely served as a springboard to launch a myriad of other extraordinary achievements and experiences. Throughout his life, Jones remained the consummate gentleman, observed by his contemporaries to be comprised of equal proportions of "courtesy, consideration, humanity, and humor."
Customer Reviews:
Great photo essays.......2006-03-24
This is a wonderful book for those interested in a photographic journal of Jones' life. Many images are rare and this book is a treat to read. Jones' career record is also recorded, which, as strange as it may sound, is hard to come by in one book, as most focus only on his major championships. Matthew has done a great job capturing the man and the player and all I can say is that in my 30 years of golf and research into golf's history, you won't find a better single volume that graphically portrays Jones. His return to St. Andrews in 1936 is particularly poignant.
Fun book.......1999-12-13
An excellent book and the perfect gift for a golfer. Anyone that appreciates the history of golf will love it.
Good content, a little disorganized........1999-10-08
This book includes anything and everything on Jones, his family, O.B. Keeler etc. And the book itself is divided into several sections for the various stages of Jones' life and career. There is a great deal of interesting material presented within. My only criticism is that the book is frankly a little tough to follow at times. The writing seems to meander in a stream-of-consciousness manner, somewhat like a "what I did this year" letter from an aged relative. The photographs (which are the main reason many will buy this book) are dispersed without much of a theme, and there is also some repetition of the photos. Many photos include no captions, leaving you to wonder what the significance might be. The random arrangement of the photos almost give one the impression you are leafing through a scrap book. Don't get me wrong. There is a lot to be had here, it's just not the most polished piece of work you're going to run into.

B.J. Bullert's preface to Public Television illustrates her point with damning clarity. Just as she thought everything was in place--an award-winning documentary filmmaker on board, two years of research, a $100,000 grant--PBS began to flex its censorship muscles on the timely (and already approved) documentary God and Money. This was to be a one-hour program about the U.S. Catholic bishops' pastoral letter that indicted the government for its inhumane and shortsighted economic policies. It actually did get aired (and on the very day the bishops released their letter); however, Bullert's frustrating experience with PBS planted the seed for this book: an investigation of the complicated interplay of public television's needs and interests and their impact on independent documentary film.
Getting inside the minds of PBS programmers was one of Bullert's goals, and to do this, she immersed himself in their culture. She uncovers a system devoted to keeping its power elite in place, one vested in a certain, safe way of presenting views and controversies that in no way might threaten its corporate-funding sources. This may seem an obvious conclusion, but Bullert combines scholarly precision with on-site investigative reporting to dramatize how programmers made editorial decisions. Public Television carefully reconstructs a few key disputes between the programmers and the independents.
The first chapter includes a political history of public television, beginning with President Johnson's 1967 signing of the Public Broadcasting Act, which, alas, failed to specify a long-term funding strategy. Federal cuts to public broadcasting in the Reagan years foreshadowed a call for total defunding in 1981. Alas, programmers "stood at the gateway as traffic cops of perspectives" in an era enormously hungry for diverse programming.
Chapter 2 examines two of the major PBS outlets for independent social-issues documentaries: Frontline and P.O.V.. The chapter that follows highlights the controversies fueled by particular works: Dark Circle, a documentary on the far-reaching impact of nuclear-weapons testing; Days of Rage, which presents the Palestinian view on the Intifada; and Tongues Untied, showing the life of a black gay man. Michael Moore's Roger and Me and Steve Talbot's The Heartbreak of America present two in-depth critiques of General Motors. One whole chapter "not only chronicles these ... but also contrasts the films with Ken Burns's PBS series, which have GM as their sole corporate sponsor and which serve to enhance the auto corporation's public image." The concluding chapter discusses the larger ramifications--to the viewing public and society--of these controversies.
This exposé will give us smug viewers of PBS a jolt. We've indeed been fed a carefully controlled diet of controversial views and "news." Herself a scholar, Bullert gives a list of existing scholarship as well as key terms and concepts. Public Television is illustrated with frames taken from the films discussed, and it includes an exhaustive bibliography that will keep students of television and the communications industry in general at no loss for further sources. --Hollis Giammatteo
Customer Reviews:
Essential Reading on Independent Documentary.......2001-04-08
B.J. Bullert provides compelling view into recent documentaries that have taken a controversial political viewpoint and have had run-ins with the public broadcasting system. The book is organized with a clear case by case structure. Bullert describes in egaging detail the difficulties that filmmakers with socially challenging documentaries have had with the PBS hierarchy and station managers. The sections on "Roger and Me" and "Tongues Untied" are particularly thorough and thought provoking. Public Television : Politics and the Battle over Documentary Film is an accessible, insightful and essential companion to any college-level documentary film class looking into the distribution and broadcast of American independent documentaries with a strong point of view.

Book Description
The Gulf War of 1991 was the highest profile media war in history. Never before had so many journalists attempted to cover a war from both sides of the conflict. This book traces the role of the media in the Gulf War and examines the attempts by both the coalition and Iraq to influence public opinion through propaganda and persuasion. Philp Taylor asks how much the public was being told and how much was held back. Analyzing the key news stories of the conflict he looks at the efforts of the American-led coalition to persuade television audiences and newspaper readers to take a "right view" of what was happening and of the Iraqi government's propaganda campaigns concerning civilian damage and the "Mother of all Battles."

Book Description
Tactics, audacity, and speed are the hallmarks of chess matches called "miniatures," games played in 25 moves or less. Learn from 100 fascinating games played by Soviet chess masters, taken from the records of the Soviet Chess Bulletin. Selected and annotated by noted chess authority P. H. Clarke. 99 chess diagrams.
Customer Reviews:
A fantastic collection of short games.......2000-09-29
The games in this book are exciting and beautiful, and the annotations are informative and entertaining. The players (relatively unknown Soviet masters) rarely make obvious mistakes, and their games exhibit a very high degree of creativity and imagination. This is a charming book to have, a great addition to anyone's chess library.
Many thanks to Dover Publications for an inexpensive, attractive reprint of a terrific game collection!
Good Value and Lots of Fun.......2000-05-22
I first read this book in 1972 or 1973. Seeing that it was back in print, I bought a copy last month and had just as much fun with it as I did the first time I read it. This time I went through all the games with a strong computer program. There are 100 games in this book, and there are around 300 major analytical errors, but they don't detract from the enjoyment of the games, nor from the overall high quality of the writing.

Book Description
Tight deadlines and tighter budgets define digital video production today--a fact Adobe has acknowledged and responded to with its completely revamped Windows XP-only Premiere Pro video editing software. By focusing on a single (non-Mac) version of Premiere, Adobe has been able to deliver a product that raises the bar for desktop digital video editing; this approachable, complete volume gets readers beyond the basics. Offering in-depth explanations guaranteed to make the knowledge stick (and in an easygoing style that makes the book fun to read), filmmaker and Premiere whiz
Jacob Rosenberg focuses on the concepts, features, and techniques that are key to mastering Adobe Premiere Pro. If you're a novice user, you'll get the grounding you need to begin capturing, editing, and outputting digital video. And if you're a Premiere veteran, you can go straight to the comprehensive coverage of all that's new: three-point color correction, multiple timelines, a new audio mixer, enhanced media management, and more. The accompanying DVD includes project files, sample footage, Third Party Plug-ins and an hour of video tutorials that help articulate concepts and features that are better suited for video explanations than on a page.
"Jacob's skills and enthusiasm as an editor have been an invaluable resource to the product team throughout the development lifecycle of Premiere Pro. It is no understatement to say that he has been instrumental in charting the course of this application. His knowledge is seemingly without limit, as can be attested to by anyone who has watched him present his master classes at various tradeshows across the globe. I can think of no one better as a guide through the intricacies and depths of Premiere Pro 1.5--the best version of Premiere to date."--Richard Townhill, Group Product Manager, Adobe Video Products
Customer Reviews:
Great Learning tool.......2007-03-14
This book is fabulous for just learning how to operate Adobe Premiere.
Best Ever User Manual.......2006-07-16
Whether its the basics you seek or the advanced "insider" tips you need, this is the manual for you. Although Premiere Pro is much different than 6.5 and previous versions, you will soon find that using it will become second nature. This is the best book for Pro users on the market.
Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 Studio Techniques (Studio Techniques).......2006-07-04
Three stars for "user friendly" and five stars for content. The information is quite detailed but needs a lot of interpretation and rereading to understand. The text doesn't always follow your project and one needs to go to the "Help" menu, often. However, if one preservers, the instructions will allow you to use the Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 program to its fullest potential.
now out of date.......2006-03-26
great book but now behind the times, wish i'd of waited a bit longer till the release of 2.0 and the subsequent book; however, I believe everything covered in this book carries over to the new version of premiere pro.
Somewhat advanced.......2006-03-18
Hello folks-
My level before i bought this book was:
1. very familiar with roxio easy movie creation 7.5
2. somewhat familiar with adobe premier pro 1.5
FIRST-
I WANT TO EXCLAIM THE WONDERFUL TREATMENT I GOT FROM AMAZON. I PAID $14.00 FOR 1 DAY SHIPPING. IT TOOK 2 DAYS. I EMAILED AMAZON AND THEY REFUNDED THE ENTIRE SHIPPING AT NO CHARGE, AT NO QUESTIONS ASKED. AT NO QUIBBLING. THEY MADE ME FEEL LIKE A PHAROAH! THANK YOU AMAZON.
I found the book an excellent deal, but somewhat on the advanced side. I feel the author gave an honest intelligent effort, but id have preferred a little more attention to the basics. I would highly recommend this book to the intermediate (at least) Adobe Premier 1.5 programmer.
I WILL ABSOLUTELY ORDER FROM AMAZON AGAIN.
And no- this is no schill.

In fewer pages than other texts, Hause and Maltby's narrative presents a social history of Western civilization within the essential contexts of major military and political events. Western Civilization: A Brief History, Volume I: To 1715
ASIN: 0534587097 |
Book Description
This brief version of WESTERN CIVILIZATION retains all of the best-selling features of the larger book in a condensed manner. Three versions are available: Comprehensive (Chapters 1-29), Volume I: To 1715, and Volume II: Since 1500. The author writes, "I began this project with two primary goals. First, I wanted to write a well-balanced work in which the political, economic, social, religious, intellectual, cultural, and military aspects of Western civilization would be integrated into a chronologically ordered synthesis. Second, I wanted to avoid the approach that is quite common in other brief histories of Western civilization - an approach that makes them collections of facts with little continuity from section to section. Instead, I sought to keep the story in history. Narrative history effectively transmits the knowledge of the past and is the form that best enables students to remember and understand the past. At the same time, I have not overlooked the need for the kind of historical analysis that makes students aware that historians often disagree in their interpretations of the past."

Fantastic textbook.......2007-02-01
This textbook is not only written in a conversational tone which holds the reader's attention, but it brings in art, personalities of historical figures, and other tidbits to enhance a student's learning experience. Book Description
There are many reasons why this is the number one selling Western Civilization text in the country. The clear, single-author narrative by Jackson Spielvogel presents history in an appealing and accessible manner. This text truly tells a story that students will understand. WESTERN CIVILIZATION strikes a true balance and provides a synthesis of political, economic, social, religious, military, cultural, and intellectual history. This balance gives students a solid foundation for further study in history. Chapter 29, The Contemporary Western World Since 1970 is a particularly good illustration of the text's balance. The book's documents and maps are useful and superb.

Very easy explanation in book.........dont try to read whole book otherwise you will get sleep
Great for CLEP resource.......2006-01-18
Got this book as well as Volume I and used them as my resources for taking the Western Civ I and II CLEPS. Perfect for the job, and helped me get a very good grade, highly recommend for anyone looking to use for that purpose.
Revionist History.......2005-07-05
After being required to read this text for a class, I bought two other history books to which I could compare this one. I thought that Spielvogel was leaving out chunks of history, and revising the ones that he included, and I wanted to double check my facts before making any accusations. Well, boy was I right. This book makes the Publisher's tag line, "Changing the Way the World Learns" seem a little too true..
If you DO get this book, here are some things to look out for:
1. He is wrong on just about everything that has to do with art or music. He cites obscure artists and names them as the most popular, most of them had Christian themed work.
2. He glorifies Hitler and the Nazis and makes the Holocaust seem like nothing but a minor glitch in history.
3. The author has a degree in Reformation History and seems to be unable to help himself from relating every single event in history to religion. So keep in mind that Voltaire had more to offer history than an anti-Christian revisionist account of the fall of the Roman Empire, as Spielvogel states.
If I were you, I'd buy a different history book to read as well as this one, if this is required for a course. Preferably one that was published for the first time in the thirties or forties and has been updated since, so that its more clear it isn't revionist history. This one was first published in 2003.
Honestly, if I could give this book less than one star I would, but there's no such option on amazon.com...
yikes.......2005-04-22
This book was horrible for AP Euro, it was not in chronological order and often confused our class. Also, he skipped over some events that were important to know for the AP exam.
THIS BOOK SUCKS.......2004-12-30
Jackson J. Spielvogel has no sense of organization whatsoever. And as for those people who read this book for fun, SERIOUSLY need a life. I, however, am using this book as a text book for AP Euro and think it is absolutely ludicrous that we have to use it. It's confusing and needs to be written better. A LOT better. This book should get -1000000 stars.

A wonderful collection of medical memories..........2006-08-28
I picked up this book because of my enjoyment of Thomas' earlier books, Lives of a Cell, and Medusa and the Snail. This happened about 20 years ago.
I've read The Youngest Science: Notes of a Medicine-Watcher two times since then.
The Youngest Science focuses not on specific "adventures" within medicine, microbiology, and evolution, but more on the evolution of Dr. Thomas himself, from watching his father (a physician), to going through medical school, to becoming a medical researcher, to reaching the positions of authority within various colleges of medicine.
Thomas was in the early part of his career when there came about profound changes in the understanding and treatment of disease processes. This makes his observations particularly interesting.
The book suffers from being so far behind the times in terms of modern medicine. Nevertheless, as the historical documentation of the evolution of a medical career, it remains fascinating.
The evolution of medicine from art to science.......2004-06-29
Although he refers to himself as a watcher, Lewis Thomas was very much a participant in the major event where medicine went from being personal and in some ways useless to a science where cures were routine. He starts the book with a description of the role of a physician before the Second World War. His father was a physician who had an office in their home, although most of his work was making house calls and hospital rounds. In those days, before sulfa, penicillin and other drugs, there were few diseases that could be treated. Therefore, medicine was largely conducted by conversation and touch, and many prescribed medications were placebos. Thomas talks openly about how ineffectual doctors were in actually curing people, and while he notes that he has no desire to regress to those times, he does say that some aspects of medicine have been lost.
Not long after he began practicing medicine, science and technology began delivering cures to many of the ailments of humans. Thomas adapted very well to the new realities, eventually rising to the presidency of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He is quite right in calling medicine the youngest science, as it has indeed only become a science in the middle of the twentieth century.
There is no question that Thomas was a talented scientist and physician, but he was also an outstanding writer. These essays, always tainted with a sense of wonder, ignorance and optimism, are an inside look at some of the aspects of how medicine was and is practiced. They are a joy to read, his insights into how medicine has changed shed a great deal of light on why there is a crisis in health care.
Autobiography of a lifetime in medicine.......1998-02-11
This is an enjoyable book of a lifetime spent in the field of medicine. My favorite chapters were the early ones as Thomas looked back at what medicine was like early in this century, including what he remembers from his father's medical practice. This medical reminiscence differs from most other physician's writings in that Thomas has spent the majority of his career in research rather than in the clinical practice of medicine. But if research is often thought of as dull drudgery, Thomas certainly does not reflect that in the book. His genuine enthusiasm (and important finds along the way) have shown how necessary research is to progress in health care. As a clinical physician myself, I gained a new appreciation for this side of medicine. Lewis's enthusiasm is infectious, his comments candid, and his medical poetry quite entertaining. I enjoyed reading this.
Words of Wisdom from a Good Man.......1997-12-10
My favorite Lewis Thomas, so far. There are many good science popularizers around, the late Carl Sagan being better known because of his TV series - Cosmos. Dr. Thomas' books stand-out as being comfy because of his "fireside chat" way of explaining and telling stories. Why do I call him a "good man"? Because his love shines through in his writing.
