    Book Description

Although valuation is fundamental to both tax and customs liability in international transactions, values calculated by the two regimes can differ, often markedly, in situations where no clear rules of transfer pricing apply. This book is a problem-solving guide for lawyers charged with valuating transactions in their client's or company's best interests. Through detailed examination of relevant guidelines, transfer pricing methodologies, and business realities prevailing among multinational enterprises, Customs Valuation and Transfer Pricing offers a cogent and convincing account of how tax and customs transfer pricing regimes may be harmonized. Among the essential elements of this important thesis, the author discusses the following in depth: + the OECD Transfer Pricing Guidelines; + the GATT/WTO Valuation Code (GVC); + the arm's length principle; + methods, both traditional and new, of determining whether the parties' relationship influenced the price; and + additions to and deductions from the customs value. The study concludes with an analysis of the circumstances and conditions under which the introduction of transfer pricing compensatory adjustments to transaction value would be consistent with Article 1 of the GVC. Customs Valuation and Transfer Pricing demonstrates that, with all the tools now available in today's global economy, there is little reason to leave disparity between tax value and customs value unchallenged. This book will continue to be an important resource for business lawyers for many years to come.

o behind the scenes of Edward Zwick's (Legends of the Fall, Glory) powerful epic set during Japan's turbulent movement away from a feudal society and into a modern nation. Tom Cruise stars as Captain Nathan Algren, battle-scarred Civil War veteran turned Winchester gun spokesman, who travels to Japan in 1876 to train the emperor's troops. With his western-trained troops in place, Emperor Meiji plans to sever ties with the traditional samurai warriors who protect the territories. But during combat, Algren is wounded and captured by the samurai. And it is while in captivity that he discovers the warrior code of honor and undergoes a spiritual transformation that will align him with the very samurai he was sent to quell.

5 out of 5 stars Putting things in perspective.......2004-06-15

The movie The Last Samurai as a history is problematic. the movie places a white man -- in this case, an american -- at the center of a rather significant period in Japanese history -- the Meiji era. In reality, the americans did not figure that signficantly -- at that time -- in altering Japanese history and there was no "Dances with Wolves" type scenario and the Emperor never received audiences as per the movie.

This illustrated "making of" is valuable in that it situates the historical "realities" as per the movie and sets things in perspective. In particular, the section on Saigo Takamori and the Satsuma Rebellion (34-5) and codification of the Bushido (60-61) show a more concrete Japan sans the exotic. What both the movie and the book fail to explore is the Iwakura Mission of 1871 where Prince Iwakura Tomomi sets out to learn from the best of the best all over the world in an effort to stave of being the meal rather than the guest to the colonial banquet.

As a commentary to the movie it is excellent. A great coffee table book and a step in the right direction.

5 out of 5 stars Great Companion Guide to the Movie.......2004-04-06

I believe this film was highly underated and didnt get the recoqnition it deserved. The book was magnificent. Great color pictures and photo shots from the movie. Great behind the scenes look at the making of the movie and the history of the Samurai class in feudal Japan. Buy the book if you liked the Movie...I sure did.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece just like the movie........2004-02-18

This book is filled with magnificent photographs and information of history contained throughout the film, along with behind the scenes info. The book also contains segments of the movie script.
An excellent companion to the outstanding movie.

        4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, but............2003-12-22

Exactly who is this Colonel Covington?

As a decade-long resident of Colorado and reenactor, I can't believe such a beautiful book as this would seemingly slip as to give a name to a person who never existed.
I am familiar with Col. John M. Chivington, the Butcher of Sand Creek, and his bloody troop. It is hard to NOT know of this fiend who used his faith to justify outright slaughter. Wars need to be fought among soldiers, not towards innocents. Ah, but I digress.

I would have much wished that the folks at Time Inc. had caught this typo before these books were sent to press. It would have made all the difference to preserve the integrity of this book.
At least from a historical perspective.

My view is petty in light of this book's appeal. Forgive my mentioning the point but it is the only thing that marred my looking through it and savoring its images and glimpse into the film.

        4 out of 5 stars I found some mistakes........2003-12-19

Yes, this is a good movie book. This book helps American people to understand Japanese history, which this movie is based on.
However, I found some mistakes in the Japanese translation. For example, the definition of Ashigaru and Kote are totally wrong. (Ashigaru should be Yabusame, and Kote is glove.)
I am really disappointed about these mistakes, because the movie is excellent and I could feel that all the staff tried to make everything authentic.
But overall, this book helps people to understand the different culture, which even new Japanese generation like me sometimes feel difficult to understand.

          Book Description

The Cinema of John Marshall explores the life and art of the pioneering ethnographic filmmaker. Its centerpiece is an autobiographical essay in which Marshall assesses his forty-year involvement with the San peoples (Bushmen) of South Africa and his films, from the 1957 award winning "The Hunters" to his current work in progress, "Death by Myth." The book weaves together the political economy of San dispossession, history and ethnography, personal narratives of historical importance, and expositions of film techniques and film language. The first English language study of the man and his work, The Cinema of John Marshall conveys the complex unity of Marshall's life: the filmic, the intellectual, the political, and the human.

4 out of 5 stars Is this as good as it gets?.......2007-03-30

              Updated review follows:

I initially gave this a 4 out of 5 review, but after also getting the Adobe Illustrator CS2 Wow! book I have to downgrade my rating to 2 out 5. Why?

              a. The book is black and white with a small insert of color samples. I don't know about you, but unless you are just drawing a bunch of outlines and b&w sketches, a manual on graphic arts NEEDS to be in color!

              b. There was no CD accompanying the book. With all the other Illustrator books out there that include CDs, I really wonder why I bought this one.

End of edits. See original review below.

I got this book because of all the 'raving' reviews on Amazon. However, while I admit the book is useful, I can only give it 4 out of 5. Why?

              1. The book is in many ways just a reorganization of the Illustrator help file with short examples. Therefore, if you have a printed version of the Adobe help then you probably don't need this book, unless you need the short examples which the Adobe help is short on.

              2. The book is very short on involved or advanced examples. Instead what you get are simple, unconnected demonstrations of Illustrator's more obvious features and as soon as the book gets to something more advanced, e.g. outline strokes, all you get is some brief text. This is all VERY odd in my opinion for a book targeting visual learners.

              3. The claim on the cover that the book is 'loaded with expert tips' is simply not true in my opinion. Sure there are a few, here and there scattered about, but the examples are too simple to be of any use in highlighting what I would consider 'best practice insights.'

              4. What the book really needs is a methodical tutorial that brings it all together: vectors, text, meshes, 3D, color, etc. Here's a novel idea: a tutorial that walks you through recreating the cover graphic!

OK, that may sound a little harsh even though I am giving it 4 stars. But I think buyers need to know what to expect.

5 out of 5 stars Real World Adobe Illustrator CS2 Review.......2007-03-28

This book was valuable on a number of fronts. I have never had actual training in Illustrator and as a result have shyed away from it as a tool. Preferring other vector programs, I was intimidated by Illustrator. This book allowed me to get past those feelings and take control of the tool.

This book is well laid out and offers a number of sidebar comments that are important points in each section. There are great full colour examples and indepth text that adds to the learning experience. The Trace Techniques section is, to put it mildly, outstanding. This really shows the power of the tool in gifted hands. I don't plan to be tracing french horn photos any time soon, but have had to do some rotoscoping in the past and have picked up a few new techniques.

The Typography section is indepth and pretty encompassing. Text is such a pain in programs. Does the printer have my font? Do I render to paths. Where is that font? The book guides you through the process of dealing with many type issues.

One of the most valuable areas for me was the appendix entitled - Moving from Freehand to Illustrator. As the books says, it was in place before the aquisition was announced and it won't solve any "which is better" arguments. But it does help you understand the two applications better.

Great value and good for an intro course or self learner for Illustrator. Best that you have some artistic talent as this is a guide to a very big power tool. Wear saftey glasses.

              5/5

5 out of 5 stars The Next Level.......2007-03-04

This book will take the intermediate user to the next level. Very well written and very useful.

              3 out of 5 stars Illustrator CS2.......2007-01-10

This is a nice book, but if you never try illustrator before do not go for this book it is not for a beginner.
I am new at this kind of work,so this book help me to remember what I forgot and a little more.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one!.......2007-01-04

Eureka!! I feel like I just touched the monolith. This book systematically addresses every feature in Illustrator that has confused and frustrated me.( It's a big book!) There are a number of illustrated step-by step techniques, but the real tasty stuff is in the written chapters. Probably not the best book for beginners. Buy this when you're ready to get serious.

In the post-Cold War world, globalization now offers wealth and opportunities on a broader scale, as well as greater international harmony, but threatens to reinforce the advantage gap between wealthy and poor regions and intensify environmental degradation. Conflict and squalor--expressed in brutal brushfire wars, epidemics, and chronic underdevelopment--vie with equally dramatic accounts of growth and democracy associated with a liberal political order and the global diffusion of trade, investment, and communications. Drawing on the breadth of the first edition, this major new edition reflects the changing world with a reassessment of many of the core themes of the Companion, and new articles on the people, concepts, and events that have shaped the world since 1993. The second edition includes biographies of Kofi Annan, Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, and Gerhard Schroder; articles on events such as the Rwandan Genocide and the war in Kosovo; and coverage of international trade developments such as NAFTA and the World Trade Organization. Eighty-seven of the 672 articles in the Second Edition are completely new; most others are thoroughly revised. This edition also features a substantial new set of articles, a dozen essays on critical issues written by influential figures. Recognizing the importance of including varying viewpoints, the editors have commissioned these essays to provide an informed and often passionate debate on controversial topics. Discussions include Lani Guinier and Glenn Loury on Affirmative Action; Francis Fukuyama and Milton Fisk on the Limits of Liberal Democracy; and Lloyd Axworthy and John Bolton on the United Nations. The contributors discuss nearly every nation in the world, including extensive information on institutions, political parties, leaders, and the sources of political mobilization and conflict. The volume also includes biographies of more than seventy-five political leaders and thinkers who have shaped the contemporary political world. Articles include detailed discussions of critical historical developments and events, concepts, international law, and organizations. The Oxford Companion to Politics of the World, Second Edition is an accessible, timely, thought-provoking, and comprehensive reference that captures the complexity and vitality of contemporary world affairs.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for all Political Science students.......2002-08-29

This is the bible, for lack of a better term, of political science.

I may be biased as several of the articles/definitions are contributions of my past professors, but the consistency of the writing doesn't hint that it is a compilation from many different experts.

In most cases, the contributing authors are the foremost authorities in their respective fields. That is apparent in the quality of this world-class publication.

                    Book Description

The beginning of the 20th century wasn't a significant time in itself for change in British politics, except perhaps for the founding of the Labour Party, but a gradual shift in the political landscape had been taking place. This was a time when the status of the United Kingdom as a great imperial power and as a strong industrial economy was just about coming to an end. The end of the 20th century gave quite a different picture. It showed a country struggling with the issue of integration into Europe (a concept barely imagined 100 years previously), a more service- less industry-orientated economy, and a political system less focused on Westminster and more focused on the regions than ever before. The challenge facing those involved in compiling The Companion to 20th-Century British Politics was to incorporate the wide breadth of subject matter covering the events, themes, ideas, people, institutions, and places that have been important in shaping the path of political history of Britain over the past 100 years. The result is the most comprehensive and authoritative source of reference on 20th-century British politics ever written. Exploring a diverse range of topics over 100 specialist contributors, under the guidance of a team of distinguished advisory editors, have written more than 3,000 entries. All the major political organisations that have functioned during the 20th century are mentioned. There are also biographical entries including longer entries on all prime ministers and holders of key cabinet posts and shorter entries on many junior ministers, influential backbenchers, and party organisers. The book also covers key areas of economic, social, legal, foreign, and defence policies with special attention devoted to the politics of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. Historical events and their impact on the shape of political thinking are described in detail. Political concepts and ideas also have entries devoted to them, as do social and economic issues. Topics of international debate such as those concerned with Europe, NATO, and Anglo-American relations are discussed at length. The whole period is covered, from the foundation of the Labour Party to mad cow disease and even the result of the 2001 general election. Book Description

The explosive expansion of Christianity in Africa and Asia during the last two centuries constitutes one of the most remarkable cultural transformations in the history of mankind. Because it coincided with the spread of European economic and political hegemony, it tends to be taken for granted that Christian missions went hand in hand with Imperialism and colonial conquest. In this book historians survey the relationship between Christian missions and the British Empire from the seventeenth century to the 1960s and treat the subject thematically, rather than regionally or chronologically. Many of these themes are treated at length for the first time, relating the work of missions to language, medicine, anthropology, and decolonization. Other important chapters focus on the difficult relationship between missionaries and white settlers, women and mission, and the neglected role of the indigenous evangelists who did far more than European or North American missionaries to spread the Christian religion - belying the image of Christianity as the 'white man's religion'.

Kaplan's book hits the high points of history but rarely goes into detail. It's format is comparative, a back-and-forth examination of various cultures. The layout is visually appealing, making it easy to read and study. Chapter review questions have well explained answers.

If you're looking for a review book that is more of a memory jogger, this could be the one for you. If you're wanting a complete, in-depth, review, look elsewhere.

i used this book to study, and, lo and behold, i got an 800 on the real world history test. admittedly, i was enrolled in ap world at my high school and did very well in it, but this book really does a good job of helping you nail down the key topics and terms (though i still get confused when trying to remember the greecian schools of philosophy). i would MAJORLY suggest using the real sat ii book as well (borrow it from the library and make photocopies, if you must), because several of the questions on the released exam appeared on the real test. the practice test's scaled scores are pretty accurate of your real performance, too.

                          go buy it.

I bought both the Barrons and Kaplan for my World History prep. Barrons is the better of the two, but Kaplan is very useful. Its advantages include 3 excellent practice tests, with scales, quick summaries and MC questions at the end of every section and high print quality(no crammed lines, easy to read). However it has flaws. It lacks visual aides(maps, pics, etc.). It lacks chronological flow and that makes it rather difficult to read and get through. If you have the money get both books, however if you have to pick get the Barrons. I scored an 800 on the exam.

                          Book Description

This book is an extensive survey and critical examination of the literature on the use of expert opinion in scientific inquiry and policy making. The elicitation, representation, and use of expert opinion is increasingly important for two reasons: advancing technology leads to more and more complex decision problems, and technologists are turning in greater numbers to "expert systems" and other similar artifacts of artificial intelligence. Cooke here considers how expert opinion is being used today, how an expert's uncertainty is or should be represented, how people do or should reason with uncertainty, how the quality and usefulness of expert opinion can be assessed, and how the views of several experts might be combined. He argues for the importance of developing practical models with a transparent mathematic foundation for the use of expert opinion in science, and presents three tested models, termed "classical," "Bayesian," and "psychological scaling." Detailed case studies illustrate how they can be applied to a diversity of real problems in engineering and planning.

The first part is introductory, and contains a lot of easy and real-life examples, and is pleasant and interesting to read. However, part 2 and 3, the 'application parts', brought me to tears with the most incomprehensible mathematics.
