    Book Description

This book is an outgrowth of a special seminar on Pressure Groups conducted in the Department of Political Science at Howard University during the fall of 2000. The major focus of the seminar was on DC Vote. The chapters in this book are revised versions of the papers that were presented at the seminar. Since the chapters employ an interest-group perspective to investigate various aspects of DC voters efforts to influence decision-makers at all branches of government and throughout the United States, the book is a valuable tool for instructors and students in most areas of American Government and Politics, especially National Government, State and Local Government, Interest Group Politics, Public Administration, and Political Behavior.

I love elfquest, but this is one of the worst books in the readers collections. There are a collection of stories that don't fit anywhere else, and all but one shoudln't have been published at all. The store of Egg's meeting with Timmain is wonderful, good art, good story. It is the only one worth while. The others have poor art and chatoic story lines. The store where sutter was a cross breed between elf and human, rather than a wolf rider wear bearable to read, but not really enjoyable. The other stories I couldn't get through. Don't wast your money. Find a back issue with the the storry about Egg.

For the record, "Sinkin Spells, Hot Flashes, Fits and Cravins" is the original title for "White Trash Cooking II". They are one and the same. Whatever you do, regardless of the title you buy it under --- DO BUY IT!

I have the original "White Trash Cooking" and this is more of the same. Anyone can cook like this and you don't need all those expensive, fancy herbs and spices. In fact, you don't need much more than salt and pepper. I sit and read these cookbooks like novels. They remind me of my simple roots and I feel like these people are my people. These books are portals to honest and simple times, people and food.

The creatures and aliens who inhabit the Star Wars universe are a wonderfully diverse group. This set of postcards collects images of some of Lucasfilm's most interesting characters--from finished costumes and models from the film to sketches of abandoned characters. There are even some early versions of familiar characters revealing roads (thankfully) not taken. For example, a concept sketch clearly depicts Jabba's majordomo Bib Fortuna--but the twi'lek is lacking his trademark lekku. As always, Chronicle Books has done a beautiful job of packaging this collection. Any Star Wars fan would appreciate this book--or even one postcard from it, if you could spare one. --C.B. Delaney

These postcards really bring to life the realities of all the work and effort it took to design and create the universe. Trust me you won't be able to put the cards down until you have looked at them for the longest time. Allthough it is juicy it contains very little info on the charactes so I rated this book a 4 star on my list.

        Book Description

Adored by its fans, deplored by its critics, Oprah's Book Club has been at the center of arguments about cultural authority and literary taste since its inception in 1996. Virtually everyone seems to have an opinion about this monumental institution with its revolutionary and controversial fusion of the literary, the televisual, and the commercial. READING WITH OPRAH is the first in-depth look at the phenomenon that is OBC.

Rooney combines extensive research with a lively personal voice and engaging narrative style to untangle the myths and presuppositions surrounding the club, to reveal its complex and far-reaching cultural influence, confronting head-on how the club became a crucible for the heated clash between "high" and "low" literary taste. Comprehensive and up-to-date, the book features a wide survey of recent commentary, and describes why the club ended in 2002, as well as why it resumed fourteen months later in 2003, with a new focus on "great books." Rooney also provides the most extensive analysis yet of the Oprah Winfrey-Jonathan Franzen contretemps.

Through her close examination of each of the club's selected novels, as well as personal interviews and correspondence with OBC authors, Rooney demonstrates that in its tumultous eight-year history Oprah's Book Club has occupied a place of prominence unique in the culture for which neither its supporters nor its detractors have previously given it credit.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, yet analytical, read.......2006-08-08

not that those things are contradictory, but I really had no idea what to expect when picking up this book. In fact, the cover and the title don't do justice to the content or the writing inside.

Instead of being simple description of the book club, how it works, or a description of Oprah, the book is an analysis of media culture in the late twentieth, early twenty-first century, told through the clear-eyed view of Rooney. And it's not that her account is unbiased but that, as with much of the best non-fiction and critical analysis, she is aware of her biases and let's the audience know and evaluate them as well.

In short, the book is very thoughtful, well-written, researchful, and interessante.

4 out of 5 stars If you read Oprah, read this.......2006-04-04

I definitely recommend Kathleen Rooney's book. What is especially compelling about her approach is how she mirrors the strengths and weaknesses of OBC in her own critique. Like Oprah, she dares to walk the dubious lines between the academy, mass media, and personal commentary, risking scrutiny on all fronts. And also like Oprah, she pulls it off with confidence and humor. I appreciate Rooney's struggle to be an authority and critique authority, which is why it's perfect that she includes a healthy dose of self disclosure and makes room for her own assessments of Oprah's picks. Most importantly, perhaps, Rooney makes the point that OBC is a woman-fronted effort and it's women readers who are changing the what, who, and how America reads.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed but essential study of the Oprah Book Club.......2006-01-02

Without a doubt this book fills a hole, exploring the Oprah Book Club (OBC) in its near totality. Although Rooney makes insightful points about the Club, including critical and popular reactions to it, unfortunately, she incorporates things that weaken her credibility and detract from the overall quality of her study. For example, many of her statements, though perceptive, are repeated too often, such as how Oprah fails to acknowledge her status as an intellectual, or how the TV host does not engage in the essential discussion over the high-low brow cultural divide.

Another drawback in the text is when Rooney creates a personal stratification of high to low literary quality. The exercise would have been very useful, if not for the lowest rung. In trying to save herself through the use of "it's-my-own-personal-opinion-and-many-will-likely-disagree-with-me", the author's credibility is compromised when she places comics and pornography there. The added statements that there are some good quality comics and `pornography' (I think she meant erotica?), don't remedy the inappropriateness of the choices. Comics (or graphic novels as they are more commonly called), today are not so much the cheap and pulpy mass-produced rags of yore and they've become a well-respected medium, especially in the library world.

In the section of `awful' and `unreadable' Oprah books, Rooney serves up the list of her most hated OBC selections, together with her most loved. While certainly entitled to her opinion, the point of the exercise is lost. Why bother throwing personal and subjective assessments in if they don't add anything to the study? It is unclear whether Rooney set out to write her personal adventures with the OBC, or an objective semi-academic treatise on the OBC phenomenon.

As a librarian, I wanted very badly to read this book and gain a better perspective on the book club that led to mile-long waiting lists and much buzz with my public. On many counts, despite the aforementioned criticisms, I got what I wanted. Rooney explores how television flattens discussion of books; how we can learn what the OBC taught us about taste; how the second configuration of the OBC that relies on classics addresses the criticism hurled at it from the first incarnation; how twitchy Oprah essentially made professional critics; Oprah's impact on authors, publishers and America's reading public; the whole `Franzen affair', and of course, who her readers are. The author clearly did her homework to answer all the questions any students of the Book Club would have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent discussion of TV media and lit criticism.......2005-05-07

Kathleen Rooney's _Reading with Oprah_ frames Oprah Winfrey's "Oprah's Book Club" (OBC) within the omnipresent high/low critical dichotomy pervasive throughout the American literary landscape.

Rooney's examination of the first OBC's (Part I) "flattening" of fiction into easily digestible afternoon TV tidbits highlights the challenging translation of high lit criticism into empathic, commercial, "low" literary presentation. OBC Part I's overemphasis on author biography and viewers' emotional responses deadened further investigation of plot and characterization. Oprah's later attempt, OBC Part II, counterbalanced flattening with the "high" criticism of guest scholars and online study helps. OBC II's belated accentuation on literary criticism has only magnified talk show programming's bipolar relationship between serious reflection and TV ratings. Oprah tempers a sincere invitation to delve into her favorite works against her cultivated media persona and corporate capital.

_Reading with Oprah_ treads on sacrosanct assumptions concerning TV's delivery of elite literary culture into the hands of middle America. This wonderful first work forces consideration of new literary spheres of influence far removed from the conventional wisdom of recent years.

Word lovers won’t be able to resist a challenge like this! It’s a two-for-one puzzlefest, a great big book with both crosswords and cryptograms to keep the solving interesting. The crosswords feature clues in everyday language (not crosswordese) about geography, history, people, and culture, and require finding synonyms, definitions, and more. Cryptic sayings—quotes from the world’s greatest thinkers, writers, and philosophers, all presented in baffling code—will feed any puzzler’s mind. For a higher level of difficulty, try cryptic crosswords: every tricky clue contains into two parts, one with a conventional definition and the other that’s only found with a touch of wordplay.

This is not a book for beginners to audio recording and Pro Tools, but it is an excellent reference book, and the author(s) are very experienced users. This is a book you should buy and keep on your shelf for when you need some help. I certainly don't plan on selling mine, and I will check out the next edition. Some improvements for the next edition: the book is full of very useful tips, but they're scattered all over the book and not indexed, so if you've forgotten where it is you'll have a hard time finding it. Also, this is not task-oriented, so if you're a beginner, you'll find it overwhelming. Check out a video tutorial in conjunction with this book, such as VTN's ProTools course, which gives an intro to audio recording as well as a lot of task-based basics. Pro Tools 7 Video Tutorial

A World History of Tax Rebellions is an exhaustive reference source for over 4,300 years of riots, rebellions, protests, and war triggered by abusive taxation and tax collecting systems around the world. Each of the chronologically arranged entries focuses on a specific historical event, analyzing its roots, and socio-economic context. Readers can visit familiar uprisings like the Boston Tea Party, while discovering lesser-known events such as the Mauritanian Rebellion in fourth-century Africa, the Marriage Aid Protest in medieval France, and the 1765 Rebellion of the Barrios in Ecuador. A separate A-to-Z biographical section introduces revolt leaders, activists, and other personalities that make up the full, and often painful, history of taxation.

              Book Description

This classic, inexpensive, brief text is perfect for colleges organized on the quarter system or for professors who want to assign supplemental reading. The organization of the text was revised for greater clarity, and this edition includes a chapter on "The Collapse of Communism and New Realities." The coverage of social and cultural history has been increased without sacrificing the text's distinctive balance. The eighth edition contains a thorough map program, and a boxed feature highlighting primary sources.

1 out of 5 stars Not "paperback" version but study guide.......2003-09-03

What is being called the "paperback" version of A Short History of Western Civilization here is in actuality not the paperback version at all but another paperback book entitled "A Study Guide to Accompany A Short History of Western Civilization from the 1600's." Richard Sullivan is not the author of THIS book. On the order form and on the packing slip it says "A Short History of Western Civilization" but it is not! If what you want is a study guide for half of this book then go ahead and order it. If you really want the entire Short History of Western Civilization book, then order the HARDCOVER version.

1 out of 5 stars Wrong Book Reviewed.......2002-01-24

              Dear Amazon.Com,
I wrote the one star book review for this book which is currently on file. The review is incorrect and should be deleted or modified. I ordered "A Short History of Western Civilization (paperback), but received "A Short History History of Western Civilization since 1600 (paperback)". I wrote the review and then discovered that I had the wrong book. I have returned the book for a refund and reordered the hardback book of the same title. You might want to note that the paperback version is a Study Guide and not a History Book. If you wish you can move the review to the correct book or delete the entry. Thank you

              1 out of 5 stars A Study Guide, Not a History.......2001-12-25

A Short History of Western Civilization (paperback) is a study guide and not a history book. It's great if a study guide, complete with questions, is what you are seeking. The volume was written by Joyce E. Salisbury, not Richard Sullivan as listed in the web site and published in 1994, not 1993. It's Volume Two: since the year 1600, and not a complete guide to the hardback book. The guide is about 128 pages and includes some maps. I give it one star because a study guide is not what I'm seeking.

4 out of 5 stars European History as a Diet of Facts at its best.......2001-01-29

Combined with interesting lectures that built upon the content of this book has the potential to creat a great semester of Western Civilization. I found the book to be a comfortable read, that provided the necessary facts and stories to provoke interest in the topics covered in each chapter. It also provides a fulfilling interpretation of historical events and the culture shaping effects of those events in history, as well as detailing the people behind the decisions. Its a comprehensive collection of the Western Civilization.

If you get your hands on this text, read it if you are interested.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work for students and general readers alike.......2000-04-10

This book traces the history of the western world, from ancient Egypt up to the fall of the Berlin wall.

The book is divided into periods of history, then further subdivided into sections about that period. You can 'dip-in' to a section easily, I find myself picking the book up for a light spot of reading with a cup of tea. I also use this book heavily in my Classics course - so it has a multitude of uses.

Overall, a thorough, unbiased, but easy to read account of western civilization. If you live in the western world, and are wondering where you came from or why things are the way they are, then get this book!

I found NAON to be a encyclopaedia on Sustainability and ideal for manufacturers that can not afford a Sustainability Expert... the book is a great way to learn and/or review all the key concepts and programs that are moving the world of Sustainability. It is a guide on how to position your company to profit or at least not lose out in this new world of manufacturing.

Amory Lovins, et al., focus on solutions, not problems. Alternative "soft" pathways, from an international perspective provide the first of many blueprints for sustainability through effiiciency. This discusses, in detail, examples from other countries and shows how US arrogance is leaving us behind, costing more and limiting alternatives. We are lagging in every sector - industry, transportation, farming, construction, energy, housing and our global impact.

At present the US has the highest greenhouse gas emissions. India and China are close behind and will soon surpass US emissions. It will take an international effort to mitigate global climate weirding. This provides constructive pathways that apply to individual and regional lives on a personal level.

The book (The Natural Advantage of Nations) shows a lot of good arguments to convince skeptics. To highlight those who have profited from sustainability is a good strategy. I hope the book will be an eye opener for at least a few of those, not yet occupied by sustainability.

Frank Zimmermann, City of Heidelberg, Head Agenda 21-Office

Emerging from Australia, this (The Natural Advantage of Nations) is a tightly textured textbook packed with detail and coming from a multidisciplined source of experienced voices, it is a treat to read, knowing that this is youth at its most powerful - focused, aware and fully integrated in their points of view. It is supported by the CSIRO, which in my small opinion is, with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), one of two Australian organizational Jewels - both now part of the public commons.

....I'm jumping out of my chair to tell you more detail from this book because there is so much excellent material in it for students of any subject.

              A reader, Web-of-UNME

I recommend an Australian inspired book "The Natural Advantage of Nations" to anyone who is seriously interested in a sustainable form of capitalism to give all people the chance to enjoy the quality of life of the West.

              5 out of 5 stars More than a pep talk, it's a how-to manual for comfortable survival........2007-03-26

This book is for everyone who is despondent about humanity's chances of living past the next hundred years. Crucially, this book is both for those who view saving the planet and ourselves as a moral imperative and for those who ask how, and when, and even can we afford it. Lovins' "Natural Capitalism" sketched out how businesses could enhance their profitability by changing their paradigm towards something that thinks beyond the next quarter.

This book differs from Natural Capitalism, another brilliant read, in that it moves past the concepts to look at the nuts and bolts of a movement that encourages business to mesh the pursuit of profitability with environmental security through innovation. This book throws light on the structure behind the sketch of Natural Capitalism.

Previous books such as Suzuki's `Good News for a Change', Benyus' `Biomimetics' and even Lovins' Natural Capitalism describe success stories without ever really detailing what you need to do to make one of these success stories yourself. You won't see much in the way of "this requires...", "they should..." or "they shouldn't.." in other texts; you will in this one. In short, this book is also a "how-to" manual written by people who have experience of `making a difference'.

The section on how to use industry cluster development to reorient firms, communities and government towards long term profitability, or in many cases simple survival, is a case in point. The guidelines on processes and institutional frameworks mesh seamlessly with revolutionary work done by organizations such as ZERI (Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives) to provide a sustainable, fruitful, profitable and socially just future for all of us.

My recommendation is that if you're one of those people who say "I'm concerned but what can I do?" then start by buying this book for your political representative, your boss and any concerned friends you might have.

2 out of 5 stars Excellent project, but book is a disaster.......2007-03-08

All the contributors, projects and initiatives mentioned in the book are indeed worthy of applause.

However, the book is simply a hodgepodge of references, difficult to read, and flows poorly.

Finally, Amory Lovins is NOT the author! He contributes a brilliant forward to the publication, but is not the author.

Basically, you're best served buying the books by Lovins and McDonough, then following progress on the topics they discuss via RMI website and the site mentioned by this book's authors.
