Book Description
In the 1970s Professor James Tobin proposed a very modest tax on currency transactions. This would make much speculative movement of funds unprofitable and the world financial system less volatile. The Tobin tax, if implemented with other regulatory measures, would be emancipatory. Global finance would be subjected to a process of deliberate control. It would bolster the autonomy of states. And it might transform the politics of globalization in the direction of more democratic control, social responsibility and justice.
But, the major problem has aways been the lack of political will. Tobin and his supporters have always assumed that the only feasible way to implement the new tax would be for all major financial centres to agree to it simultaneously. Dr Patomäki demonstrates that it is possible to proceed without universal consensus, and develops the idea of a Tobin tax organization (TTO) that would implement and supervise the process. The potentially huge annual revenues - eventually as much as $1 trillion - could be used for economic and social purposes determined globally, reviving the prospects of humanity moving towards a more just world order.

Like many weekend duffers who don't play enough golf to significantly improve--just enough to evoke frustratration--Lee Eisenberg wanted to better his game. So he set himself a seemingly modest goal: to shoot one round of 79 or less. He spent 18 months practicing like a man possessed, reading books, watching instructional videos, and taking lessons from professionals. The result: He learned more about his temperament than about how to stay in the fairway. Not that he didn't try; until he became convinced of the futility of his efforts, Eisenberg spent nearly every waking moment consumed with conquering this myth of golfing prowess, agonizing over his scorecards, developing quarter-sized calluses, and stewing over what could have been. Rather than snap each cursed shaft over his knee and quit the game in a blaze of obscenities, Eisenberg did the only sensible thing: he gave in and embraced mediocrity. His account of this transformation, Breaking Eighty: A Journey through the Nine Fairways of Hell, is ultimately about finding pleasure in the game and proudly embracing the role of "The Hacker."
Customer Reviews:
BUY THIS BOOK!.......2005-11-22
This is one of the greatest golf books of all time. Do not be discouraged from buying it from the following reviews because any person with a brain larger than a golf ball would realize that there is more to this book than just helpful golf tips. I resent the people who bought it to use as a tool to improve their golf swing.
Useless !!!.......2003-11-13
I feel cheated. The "blurb" I read about this audiobook suggested it would prescribe remedies for "Breaking Eighty". All this book does is depressingly stress that most people will NEVER break Eighty , no matter how much time, effort, money , blood ,sweat and tears they expend. It's totally useless...nothing more than a hacker's journey through hacking. ..Not one iota of relevance to the task at hand. Do NOT , under any circumstances , pay money for this...regardless of format.Also... The author's delivery is akin to those ghastly overwritten and adenoidal essays that infest NPR daily.
Have I made myself clear ???
Waste of time!.......2001-01-15
Intriguing title fooled me into reading this one! I was not impressed with much of anything in this book. Although many of us can relate to the drive to achieve golf levels, this book doesn't offer much. Found the author to be irrelevant to my approach to the game. Too critical of teacher, course, most of everything except himself. As one PGA pro said: "complain about everything except the one swinging the club." This would make a much better title. Try Carl Paulson's book to see a magnificent player struggle with the game.
A diary of a journey.......2000-05-26
Breaking Eighty is a well worded and evocative diary of Lee Eisenberg's attempts to improve his golf game. He travels the world, tries out tips, teachers, and theories, with--I'll just say--moderate success.
This isn't an instructional book; it's an autobiographical story. Nevertheless it speaks to the heart of the golfer who is wondering why, despite earnest intent and enormous effort, his golf game isn't improving perceptibly.
Did Eisenberg break eighty? You'll just have to read to find out. One other thing you'll find out as you turn the pages is that he had an interesting journey, and that is perhaps the more important point.
A Double Eagle.......1999-11-04
This book is about a frustrated hacker who brings his considerable wit and eloquence to the task of "breaking 80." On his journey he samples every product, theory, pro and golf guru that has tempted the rest of us who love the game but just don't score very well. Very funny, very insightful, very Zen (the official religion of golfers).

Book Description
David Nasaw has written a sparkling social history of twentieth-century show business and of the new American public that assembled in the city's pleasure palaces, parks, theaters, nickelodeons, world's fair midways, and dance halls. The new amusement centers welcomed women, men, and children, native-born and immigrant, rich, poor and middling. Only African Americans were excluded or segregated in the audience, though they were overrepresented in parodic form on stage. This stigmatization of the African American, Nasaw argues, was the glue that cemented an otherwise disparate audience, muting social distinctions among "whites," and creating a common national culture.
Customer Reviews:
GOING NOWHERE.......2001-06-20
I agree with the sentiments of the above reviewer, yet I wonder how such negative a review could elicit so many "stars" of evaluation. I tried to teach Nasaw's book in the context of a college course on sports and leisure, with moderate success. Aside from the discussion about white's perceptions of African Americans (a topic which, as the previous reviewer said are not themselves brought into the picture), there is little to no discussion of historical context or the social structure of the urban environments that produced these "public amusements." It seems that Nasaw's book is really part of a larger project, as there is much that needs to be filled in -- especially any detailed discussion of public amusements between 1910 and WWII and beyond. This book would be useful to the specialist of leisure of entertainment in that it is very well documented and covers a very wide territory of leisure practices. But too often the reader is left thinking "So what?" and Nasaw does little in the way of arguing WHY this particular book was written -- why he wrote it in this particular way. All in all, a rather boring and tedious book, though one which is not without its interesting historical facts.
Interesting, but not without flaws........2000-09-24
Nasaw offers an interesting account of the rise of public amusements such as baseball, amusement parks, vaudeville and nickelodeons at the turn of the century. He argues that these amuseuements united European immigrants as "American", in part by denying access to African-Americans. Yet, Nasaw does not adequately weave his discussion of African-Americans into his narrative. Similarly, he does not discuss other ethnic groups such as Asian-Americans and Hispanics, among others to investigate their accessibility to public amusements. Nasaw also limits his account primarily to Chicago and New York, while trying to draw broad implications for the entire country. He has offered very interesting anecdotes and provided a broad history of different amusements at the turn of the century, however, his analytical framework is not without its flaws.

Customer Reviews:
Very well written book.......2007-02-01
Overall I thought this book was very well written. It has a lot of good examples and if you are willing to invest the brain power you can learn a lot from it. I will say that you can't rely entirely on this book to help you pass the Cisco IPT troubleshooting test. I used this book along with some material from Knowledgenet to pass the test. I'm pretty sure I would have had to take it at least twice if this book was my only reference.
Invaluable Reference.......2007-01-11
I have to say, a lot of the Cisco Press books can be frustrating. They're great if you want a really detailed background on VoIP technologies, but for day to day use and quick reference they quickly prove to be more hassle than they're worth. The idea of a "troubleshooting" guide by Cisco seemed like it would be this to the extreme, but this is actually and incredibly useful book. Especially useful are the sections on configuring traces, monitoring, and alarms. I've worked with Cisco IP Telephony products for nearly 2 years and still was not aware of many of these features. Many of the problems I've encountered are listed here, and accompanied by an ordered checklist of things to troubleshoot. Reading this book will save any engineer, administrator, technician, or manager tons of time on the job.
The only reason I can't give this book 5 stars is it is 4 years old, and only covers CallManager up to 3.3 (5.0 is the latest version). Subsequently, there's lots of "this may be supported in future CallManager versions" lines, which you must then look up on Cisco's website. Many of the problems listed in this book were fixed with CallManger 4.1, released in late 2004.
Good overview of the tools available........2003-05-15
I have to admit that this is not a book that I have read cover to cover. I have dipped into it to cover topics listed in the CCIE voice exam. I have found it to be very useful in that respect. For each topic it gives an overview and brief details on configuration before going on to explain how to troubleshoot problems. It will not replace the troubleshooting resources available on CCO, but it will give you a great place to start!
Now that I've read it I can answer the following questions:
Would I buy it to help pass the Troubleshooting Exam? - Yes (but I have not done the exam so difficult to say for certain)
Would I buy it to help pass the CCIE Voice written exam? - Probably, but would need more information from CCO.
Would I buy it for my reference bookshelf? - Definitely.

Customer Reviews:
Taste depends on student...high schooler or college?.......2003-01-18
If you are in college and like to read technical documents, hey, it's probably the book for you! If you're like me, a high schooler, and you really like and remember documentaries from the History Channel but have a hard time reading extensive historical info, don't get this book! You'll end up spacing out from boredom because it gets too complex and you have to reread each paragraph 3 or 4 times just to remember it for the next 10 minutes.
This book is so boring that I often find myself staring blankly at the page for long periods of time wondering why I even signed up for Dual Enrollment Western Civilization (we use this book, unfortunately). The text, which bombards you with facts, dates, names, and geographical locations one after the other unceasingly, is enough to scare anyone away from a history major. It has numerous maps (one every couple pages), but geez, the book is the cure for insomnia for crying out loud! Two words into the text and I'm out like a light! It is far too technical. It also talks of things as if you already knew what they were talking about, like it's supposed to be a refresher for us.
As an 11th grader on block schedule, I have already taken World History (1 year ago), and I have to say, I remember more from THAT textbook right now (which wasn't fun either) than from that which I read last night from this textbook. Lists of dates and names don't cut it. It doesn't give interesting info, and some areas are surprisingly summarized into only a few sentences while others are unmercifully long winded; and should not begun to be read past 6 PM! God forbid a battle come up, it's like a list of geographical locations: so and so fought at the [insert place], whereafter they fought at [name] and so forth until I can't even clearly distinguish from the text WHY the battle even started in the first place. The Persian War and Peloponnesian War are what we've covered on the war fronts, and they listed what the militaries did and where they fought. It was like a manual. I'm sure that's great reading for a historian, but for the average Joe, it's equivalent to staring at a blank wall for 10 hours- you don't accomplish or remember anything.
That's a high schooler's take on the book. For a high schooler, this book equals doom! For older people, it might be a pleasant read....(*yeah, sure...)
Kristen.......2002-09-03
The book looked brand new. It arrived in about a week. I would recommend to anyone!
A well balanced study guide with heterogenous perspectives.......2000-03-29
This is a well balanced study guide with a variety of questions and answers. There are no tips or model answers for the considerations of specific documents, it would help to also have an orientation. Just as there are answers to multiple choice, true false, and completion it would help to have answers on further consideration of the documents section. The Map exercises should also have there answers in order to benefit from such exercises especially when your working with distances between cities, locations. Take the case of Chapter 14, how long would it take to reach the Moon on a mountain bike, with a car, on a jet, or a cruise ship, it all depends on the speed that you may assign to the vehicle. This is like playing TRIVIA, pag. 143. Suggestions for further consideration should have a model answer unless you require just an opinion.
Book Description
The companion volume to Fadiman's Fantasia Mathematica, this second anthology of mathematical writings is even more varied and contains stories, cartoons, essays, rhymes, music, anecdotes, aphorisms, and other oddments. Authors include Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, and many other renowned figures.
Customer Reviews:
A great sequel.......2000-05-03
This anthology might as well be titled Fantasia Mathematica, Volume 2. When Volume 1 first appeared in 1958, readers couldn't get enough, so this work followed in 1962, and is now back in print. I first read Volume 1 as a teenager, so the current title doesn't carry for me the nostalgia of the original, but there's still lots of good stuff. This time, the best section appears first, A Set of Imaginaries, to get the reader hooked. Two of the better stories are The Appendix And The Spectacles, and Coconuts. As with the original, you don't have to be mathematically inclined, but it helps -- or does it hurt?

The appearance of mathematical ideas in fiction was both exciting and inspiring.......2007-10-02
Being a fundamental component of the human experience, it is natural that mathematics will appear in literature. In this book, Fadiman has brought together a collection of fiction works where mathematics plays a role in the plot. The level of involvement is varied, in some stories it is fundamental and in others it is incidental. However, in all cases it is exciting to see how it is used to flesh out a significant story.
The level of mathematics is rarely beyond what the educated person would expect to pick up in high school and when it does exceed that plateau, it is nothing that cannot be understood from the context. Many areas are included, from music to verse. I enjoyed the stories, they were a joy to read and as a writer, they caused me toss around some mathematical ideas that I would like to try to exploit in a fictional context. They are successful in two areas, exciting and inspiring.
