Odum achieved membership in the National Academy of Sciences, shared with his brother the prestigious Crafoord Prize for Ecology, accepted six honorary doctorates, and received numerous awards for environmental activities.

From Theda Bara to Anna Nilsson and Sarah Bernhardt, the achievements of fifteen silent film women who entered early motion pictures to become key personalities of the industry are presented in David Menefee's The First Female Stars: Women Of The Silent Era. Menefee produced the first comprehensive study of actress Sarah Bernhardt's work previously, and here uses original sources to examine the influence and significance of her contemporaries.

Paging Hope Brown!.......2004-09-22

This, truly, is a bizarre book. For one thing, the dust cover promises far more than the text delivers. Among the actresses profiled, according to the cover flap, are Hope Brown (who? The name doesn't even appear in the index); Ina Claire, who did 2, count 'em, 2 silent feature films and is only fleetingly mentioned on a couple of pages; Asta Nielsen, who is nowhere to be found; Anna Q. Nilsson, who is given but a cursory nod on a single page; and Dorothy Phillips and Alice Terry, both briefly acknowledged on single pages. I had especially been looking forward to author Menefee's take on the long-forgotten Dorothy Phillips. Those actually profiled include Theda Bara, the Gish sisters, The Talmadges, and Maes Marsh and Murray, most of whom, by stretching it a bit, could be considered early screen stars. But hardly among "the first." Janet Gaynor, in contrast, didn't arrive until 1924 and didn't become a star until 1927. Not exactly a screen pioneer. As for the text itself, the profiles are competent but a bit on the dry side, and several of the actresses have recently enjoyed full-scale biographies by, ahem, more enterprising profilers. Strangely, Mr. Menefee fails to list Eve Golden's wonderful "Vamp: The Rise and Fall of Theda Bara" in his otherwise lengthy bibliography, nor has he apparently been moved by Charles Affron's solid "Lillian Gish: Her Legend, Her Life," indispensible sources on two of the profiled actresses. In contrast, I see no pressing need for the present volume, whose conclusions include some airy comparisons between the importance of the lost silent films of Pauline Frederick and the future renown of Meryl Streep's cinematic output -- or some such; Mr. Menefee's point remains a bit unclear, at least to this reader. So instead of the rather superfluous "The First Female Stars," I recommend the aforementioned biographies, as well as Jeanine Bassinger's "Silent Stars" and Anthony Slide's "Silent Players," both volumes that actually cover new ground. And, once again, who IS Hope Brown?

Donna Marie Williams gives readers 365 days of health and fitness advice in Sister Feelgood. Ms. Williams' target audience is black women. She has topics each day that offer inspiration. There are also topics to encourage women to love each part of their body. She also provides suggestions for the many areas of a woman's busy life. Each reading includes an affirmation for the reader to focus on for the day.

I recommend this book to all women who want a healthy lifestyle. Sister Feelgood is a supplement to any workout plan or healthy eating plan. This book is small enough for the reader to keep in your purse to refer to later. I look forward to future books by Donna Marie Williams.

Very well-done strategy game.......2003-05-25

This game not only has great graphics and music, it's also very challenging! The first few times you play you'll get tottally worked by the computer even if you're very used to the genre(even on the easiest level).

The big debate: is it master of magic II or not? Well, the main difference is that in AOWII you don't bother with food, and there is less room for expansion. But AOW also has many other elements that MOM doesn't have, such as quests to appease Gods, Wizards towers, and stronger AI.
Some gamers hate the fact that there's no ramdom map, but there are plenty of senarios, and trust me you WON'T ever play them all unless you tottally have no life.

Very good, particularly for a newb to game.......2002-06-23

Compared to most strategy guides, which are usually just re-hashes of material in the manual, this guide is chock full of strategies and interesting info about a very deep game. Some of the strategies will be obvious to seasoned vets, but for newcomers they'll be a great help.

There are more than 200 pages, most in very small print meaning the author has crammed a lot of material in. There are errors here and there, probably a result of the book being written before the game was 100% complete. But all in all a good effort.

Houston, we have a problem..........2007-08-24

I don't know if every copy of the book is like this, but mine was printed so faintly that the highlighting of the examples was too faint to see. What this means is that the examples in the book (and there are a lot of them... that is the primary method of teaching in the book) are useless without the accompanying text. The accompanying text is quite good and thorough, but I wouldn't recommend this book at all unless you're sure they've fixed the problem at the printer.

Excellent regex primer!.......2007-01-11

After reading this clearly written little book you will have a good understanding of what regex expressions are all about as well as a serviceable command of syntax. Follow it up with Friedl's "Mastering Regular Expressions," which will be a breeze with Forta's crash course under your belt, and you will be well on your way to guru-dom.

Easy for Beginners.......2006-11-04

If you need to understand regular expressions that is explained in laymans terms, you will like this book. This book is perfect for beginners and gives you a good start in understanding how regex works. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an easy way to learn regular expressions.

Useless.......2006-10-02

In the book introduction the author correctly states that most regexp texts and tutorial tend to concentrate just on the "easy" part: regexp syntax illustrated with a few examples, and do not give the reader even a little mastery in the art of using them. He then proceeds to writing another short and sweet useless syntax illustration. This "book" has no more useful material than you can find in a free web tutorial, so I suggest you save your money and stick with those, or go for a book that's worth some money: "Mastering Regular Expressions" by O' Reilly.

Practical approach how to use regular expressions.......2006-07-05

I was looking for a guide that teaches me how to use regular expressions. This book seems to do the trick. It starts with simple commands to more and more complex commands. I really like the fact that it is using the same examples over and over again.This way way you can compare the long statements using simple commands with the more sophisticated short statements that accomplish the same task.
Unfortunately, regular expression differ for each development environment (.NET, javascript, Perl, etc.). Although the book tries very hard to explain the differences I can imagine it can be confusing from time to time.
In my case a book about regular expressions using .NET would be more suitable. However, the reviews of the books that cover this topic where not so good.
Another bad point about the book is that it is less suitable to use as a reference. Then again, if you are looking for a book that teaches you how to use regular expressions this is a book worth taking a look at.

From the author: We observed two instances of Eastern Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) hens renesting after hatching their first clutches. These observations constitute for this species the third report of renesting after successfully hatching a clutch and, in one instance, the first record of two clutches hatching during the same breeding season. After the successful hatching of the second clutch, the hen raised the poults for at least 16 d. We observed the same female with two poults 19 days after hatching her first clutch. Received 6 Nov. 2000, accepted 12 Nov. 2001.

From the supplier: A study was conducted to determine the relationship between group density and foraging size in the Turkey Vulture. Birds in the Biosphere Reserves in Durango, Mexico, were observed for their foraging abilities. The foraging group size varied for different populations. This indicated that factors other than population density affected foraging group size. These factors include the feeding behavior and the availability and size of carcasses of the prey.

I am teaching middle school science and love this book. It is packed with information and has a very interesting browsable format. Its very inviting to pick up and just start reading anywhere. There is a good balance between theory and application. It addresses the real world of teaching in multicultural, economically diverse america.

The Art of Teaching Science is a wonderful resource for middle and secondary science teachers. The book recognizes good teaching as a creative and experiential process and it provides young educators with a framework for innovative teaching. The hands-on, minds-on activities provide useful examples of how inquiry-based experiences can help improve our students understanding and enjoyment of science. It is well worth the read.

A Treasure Trove!.......2004-12-11

Hassard is at it again! Having been one of the pioneers in exploring the application of technology in the teaching of science in his earlier books, such as Science as Inquiry and Minds on Science, Hassard's The Art of Teaching Science is a compendium containing all that a science educator needs to be fully current and effective.

Incorporating historical information I deem critical knowledge for my pre-service students, Hassard considers the curriculum implications of the science curriculum, and does a masterful job at the marriage of the theory with the current trends in best practices in Part III of his book. In Part IV, Hassard really struts his stuff as a master strategist, and takes on the reader with him. This part, for me, is one of the most important reason to get this book, although some may argue that other sections hold stronger merit.

This is one of the books to own, if just to use for reference purposes.
