When I bought this book i expected another dull, dry trivia test that assumed i knew nothing more than the contents of episode IV-VI- was i ever wrong. This difficult trivia coolection draws upon the book series as well as the comics. Parts of the testask you to identify spots on a map of tatooine or label the parts of an astromech droid. Take this challenge if you dare.

I took the exam and it was challenging. The part about identifying every single part of an R2 unit was really difficult! Mrs. Rusch should have added more questions about the Jedi and the Force, though.

This looks like a kid's book, but is marketed as adult level. Twelve dollars for what? I'm still scratching my head. Lucas didn't make enough money on the special editions at the box office, so he ran out and threw this 100 page no-brainer together and is charging an arm and a leg. Don't waste you money like I did

          Book Description

Too often remembered solely as the psychiatrist and cultural critic whose testimony in Senate subcommittees sparked the creation of the Comics Code, Fredric Wertham was a far more complex man. Author Bart Beaty traces the evolution of Wertham's attitudes toward popular culture and re-assesses his place in the debate about pop culture's effects on youth and society.

When The Seduction of the Innocent was published in 1954, Wertham (1895-1981) became instantly known as an authority on child psychology. Although he had published several books before Seduction, its sharp criticism of popular culture in general—and comic books in particular—made it a touchstone for debate about issues of censorship, child protection, and freedom of speech. Despite the nuances of his arguments in that book and his evolution as a critic throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Wertham is best remembered as one of the most inflexible critics of popular culture in postwar America.

Fredric Wertham and the Critique of Mass Culture is an examination of Wertham's career, providing a fresh perspective that re-interprets Wertham's intellectual legacy, and challenges received notions about his assumed cultural conservatism. Beaty analyzes all of Wertham's published works, as well as his heretofore unreasearched and unpublished private papers, correspondence, and notes. In the process, Beaty reveals a man whose opinions on culture and media were not nearly as cut-and-dried as suggested by his books, and whose life and career offer more subtlety of thought than previously assumed. In particular, the project examines Wertham's change of heart in the 1970s, when he began to claim that comics could be a positive influence in American society. Beaty explores Wertham's career as a child psychologist, communications scholar, and public intellectual.

The Wertham that emerges is a critic who was significantly more progressive and multi-faceted than those who condemn him would ever assume.

I bought this for my 91 year old Grandmother for Christmas. She has always enjoyed reading, and loves word games to keep her mind active. Even though she needs to write down that I visited so she can remember to tell others who came to the house, she can still do a mean crossword puzzle! She said she'd be doing them all year until next Christmas!

          2 out of 5 stars Not worth a dime........2006-04-26

This book was a complete waste of money in that it was a disapointment to the Quickbooks series which is generally reliable. I only paid $1.95 for it and it followed the old adage that you get what you pay for. This was true in this case. After reading it a few times, I placed it in my bookcase and have not touched it since.

5 out of 5 stars Great, entertaining resource.......2005-05-04

I teach Bookkeeping with Quickbooks. This is one of my reference books. I love it because it speaks simply and effectively in language that is used by everyday human beings not "Geek Squad" or "CPA" lingo. I haven't found any information in the book to be inaccurate or difficult to understand. Also, unlike the Intuit published Quickbooks 2003 User's Guide, each chapter covers a specific area, so that if you want to know about Banking or Creating Lists (for two examples), you don't have to flip back and forth through different sections of the book. I look forward to getting the 2004 version of this book. I may, or may not, get the User's Guide to 2004.

          1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2004-03-04

Almost half of this book has nothing to do with using Quickbooks, and the half that talks about Quickbooks instructions is shallow and almost useless. Every time something confused me when I tried to decide how to use the Quickbooks features, I looked it up in this book. Half the time there was no information, and the rest of the time the information was less helpful than the instructions that appeared on the Quickbooks screen. I ended up calling my accountant so often, he told me buy a book. When I told him I'd already bought this book, he told me to buy the other bestselling book on Quickbooks , which is the one he used. He was right.

          1 out of 5 stars Incorrect Information.......2004-02-26

There isn't a lot of good, practical information in this book, because the author spends too much time on non-Quickbooks information and wisecracks. However, when I had a problem, the information in this book was wrong.

My bank reconciliation didn't work, and I looked up the solution in this book. The picture of the reconciliation window the author used to explain the problem wasn't the same as the window in Quickbooks. The author's "solution" was to let QuickBooks make a change to my records - which my accountant won't accept. I finally went to a bookstore and found another book, which gave a clear explanation of the problem, how it happened, and how to fix it (it was the QuickBooks Official Guide by Ivens).

This book is not only missing important instructions for Quickbooks users, some of the instructions that are in the book are wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Haven't read the book yet, but emailed Steve & he answered!.......2003-09-11

I haven't read the book yet, but I just bought it. I read the Mr. Nelson's statement (third reveiw listing) and took him up on his offer to email him with questions. He answered very quickly and was very helpful! I figure that any author that makes himself that available, must really believe in his book. Thanks Steve, appreciate your time.

          Book Description

Every now and then, things explode. Riots, uprisings, revolutions, new and bizarre social groups spring up seemingly from nowhere. Our standard histories tend to treat these as oddities, if treated at all, or as misguided responses to hard times, limited by lack of responsible leadership. Here's a People's History to puncture that balloon. From the Cynics & Spartacus through the Levelers, Diggers & Ranters to the Revolution of the Carnation, the San Francisco Diggers, Red Guard of Shenwulian, Brethren of the Free Spirit, Guevara, the Provos & the Metropolitan Indians. Nearly 100 episodes of revolt and utopia which popped up without a plan or a leader from the ancient Greeks to the present.

Fremion lives in Paris where he participated in the May '68 orgasm.

2 out of 5 stars some interesting information marred by poor writing.......2005-04-25

I was excited to read this book, and I did learn about some historical movements and events that I hadn't encountered before, but I feel the need to caution potential readers about the significant shortcomings of this book.

Most glaringly, as has already been mentioned by R. Hucek, the prose is terrible. No, strike that; it's *abysmal*. I will give the author the benefit of the doubt that the original French is far more readable, although I suspect he shares some blame for the leaden tone of the book. This is a real disappointment, especially because the topic should engender effusive enthusiasm.

I also take issue with Fremion's political assumptions and methods. He at least insinuates that he is writing from an anarchist perspective, but the book is rife with leftist apologetics and applause for various "reforms" secured by the described insurrections. I suppose this isn't surprising coming from an author whose main claim to fame seems to be some level of involvement in the Paris 68 uprising, which was a thoroughly Marxist affair with some cosmetic New Left overtones. He quotes Situationists like DeBord and Vaneigem often, but seems to be more interested in their technological and organizational fetishism than their more insightful and liberatory cultural theory.

Granted, he explicitly acknowledges his subjectivity, but I think he should have given more transparency vis-a-vis his personal ideological bent, because it certainly colors his presentation of the various insurrectionary case studies. He glorifies workers to the exclusion of other oppressed groups and seems very keen on work itself, so long as it is under the auspices of a worker's council. His politics seem to straddle anarcho-syndicalism and libertarian communism; he delivers constant paeons to the wonders of federalism and government from below. (Never mind that political representationalism is not anarchistic, no matter how temporary or democratically ratified.)

Fremion takes great pleasure in old left anachronisms, such as referring to all forms of authoritarianism as "Stalinism" and any self-managing social group as a "soviet". He also downplays or ignores glaring instances of hierarchy within the movements he describes, particularly male domination. Despite the occasional acknowledgement of these shortcomings, and an uncharacteristic awareness of the oppression of children (at least when a white male anarchist saves the day by setting up a school for them), Fremion seems to think sociocultural domination is fine as long as it isn't imposed by the bourgeois state. Indeed, although the book touts itself as a "people's history", it reads like a standard historical account wherein the almost exclusively male and predominantly white leaders are the primary actors. This is a total contradiction of his supposed goal of illustrating spontaneous revolts which crystallized without a set program or leader.

It's also worth noting that there is only one example in the entire book from a non-EuroAmerican culture: The Iroquois League. Even this example is perplexing, because other than praising the League for working just like a (you guessed it) "soviet" and lauding their unwritten charter as the forerunner of the U.S. Constitution (what an anarchist, eh?), he characterizes the League as an expansionist and often war-like political entity which was on the verge of becoming a native imperial force when the Europeans decimated it. Well, so much for non-whites achieving authentic libertarianism.

Ultimately this book was more problematic than helpful, although it helped me solidify some of my critiques of the workerist and hyperorganizational strands of the contemporary anarchist milieu personified by AK Press (they also publish some very good material, but this is mostly because they are something of a monopoly in the anarchist publishing world and thus feel compelled to cater to interests outside of their pet causes like rehashing the Spanish Civil War ad nauseum). Incidentally, the illustrations by Volny are quite good and are probably the main reason why I didn't give this book one star. "The Souvenir Album of Buenaventura Durruti" is particularly cool and made me wish the whole book was done in a similar comic book fashion.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A FUN BOOK.......2004-12-24

This book can be really funny while it is very interesting. It is full of many short stories about important movements that you most likely wont hear about other places. The chapters are short and easy to read. It is a great refrence book because you can jump around in it for brief discriptions.

3 out of 5 stars Conversation with an Old French Radical.......2002-11-17

An unpretentious history of mass revolt, covering everything from the Diggers to the Iroquois League to anarchistic Red Guards in the Chinese Cultural revolution.
The first thing you'll notice about this brief survey of spontaneous radical insurrections is the translation: it's bad. It's very very bad. Thoughts detour into meaningless exclamations, phrases are unclear and clunky. The second thing you'll notice is the subjective approach to history: Fremion picks favorites. Comrade X is only mentioned to be dismissed as a "turd," Comrade Y "had a good head on her shoulders"-- those sort of vagueries. The combined effect of these two attributes is that the book reads like an intimate conversation with an old French radical. His English is good but not great, he twists your ear a bit and his breath stinks of wine, but he also manages to make you feel as if you were present at every event he chronicles. Clashes, names, and faces fly out of history at you, only to disappear, in a rush that approximates the rushb that the actual participants of these struggles must have felt. Fremion makes you want to read more about the many insurrections he touches on-- to try to sort out the heroes and villains (or "Stalinists" as Fremion labels them) for yourself. Pick it up!

Every Christian should read this book. It will open their eyes as never before.

5 out of 5 stars Archaeology and the Lost Tribes........2007-01-28

This book by E.Raymond Capt brings to light some archaeological discoveries that explain what happened to the lost tribes of Israel.
"The so-called 'lost tribes of Israel' were never really lost. They only lost their identity during their captivity in Assyria." -from the author.

The "missing links" in this book are specifically Assyrian inscriptions and cuneiform tablets.According to the annals of Sargon II,he displaced Samaria's citizens(Part of the Kingdom of Israel)with another people.
"Assyrian artists have given us graphic pictures(inscribed on wall palques)of the subjection of the cities of the Israelites and the deportation of the inhabitants to captivity in Assyria."-from the Preface of the book.

Another point of interest is the pre-captivity migrations of Israel. Not all of their travels were associated with captivity.
The author details names used by the lost tribes and their movements.
He also looks into languages-Welsh,Hebrew,English,and Assyrian.
Mr.Capt writes about the Behistun Rock and the work of Henry C. Rawlinson.
This is an excellent book for discovering languages, names, places, and the history of the lost tribes!

5 out of 5 stars Tracing the Migration of the Lost tribes of Israel.......2006-07-28

Could you be an Israelite and not know it?
"Here's a paradox, a most ingenious paradox: an anthropological fact, many Christians may have much more Hebrew-Israelite blood in their veins than most of their Jewish neighbors." (1)
            Alfred M. Lilienthal
Could this possibly be so? If so, it would mean that the majority of Christendom and the rest of society has misidentified the people most prominent in the Bible. If Israel has been misidentified there is no doubt that major errors in doctrinal interpretation and application of biblical prophecy have been made! Take a look at a truly remarkable study of Assyrian tablets that reveal the fate of the Lost Tribes of Israel. This is the book considered by most to be Capt's finest of all his vast and excellent literary achievements!

An archaeological study of the origin and history of the so-called "Lost Tribes of Israel" and the Assyrian tablets that reveal the fate of these same people chosen by God to be the "light-bearers" to the nations. When clay cuneiform tablets were found in the excavations of the Assyrian Royal Library of Ashurbanipal in ancient Nineveh, their relevance to the nation of Israel was overlooked at the time. This was undoubtedly because they were in complete disorder and among hundreds of miscellaneous text dealing with many matters of State. Contributing to this situation was the fact that the Assyrians called the Israelites by other names during their captivity.

Some of the tablets found were dated around 707 B.C. and reveal the fate of the Israelites as they escaped from the land of their captivity and "disappeared" into the hinterland of Europe. These tablets form the "Missing Links" that enable us to identify the modern-day descendants of the "Lost Tribes of Israel". In doing so, we increase our knowledge of Bible history and experience a dramatic revision of our preconceived ideas of Bible prophecy.

In this authoritative book, the author has attempted no more than a brief review of the origin and history of the Israelites; a survey of the Assyrian inscriptions and cuneiform tablets that record the deportations of Israel as related to Biblical and secular history; their sojourn in captivity, and a synopsis of their migrations to their new homelands (British Isles, France, Germany, Scandanavia, Canada, America, etc.). "Missing Links" is the book that opened the eyes of thousands of Christians (Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, Church of Christ, and more) to their Israelite heritage and how that one single discovery has changed the way they now view all Bible doctrine and prophecy!

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this book like the plague .......2005-12-21

Although this book purports to be a scholarly investigation of the lost tribes of Israel and their relation to Assyrian studies, there are odds bits and pieces in here that lead me to believe that the author has a strange, distorted agenda. Just one example: On page 36 he claims that the Semites, from intermarrying with the Hittites, acquired the so-called "Jewish nose" and he quotes the Haddon-Hammond's Library World Atlas from 1954 to support this claim! If he believes this strange nugget (and what exactly is a "Jewish nose" and how is it different from the one on Capt's face?), what other distortions does he commit?

            5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2005-05-06

The information and research in this book concerning the travels of the Israelites and who they really are is incredible. Of all Mr. Capt's books he's written over the many years, this has to be his best! If you want an eye opening true history of true Israel, which most Christian churches deny, READ THIS BOOK. You can't help but agree with Mr. Capt. Very compelling and convincing.

I'm a cosmetology student and was supplied with this book by the school I attended. If given the choice now I would choose the same one myself. I have learned more from this book than I even knew was out there. It's easy to read, understand, and comprehend. It supplies many definitions and also covers everything on the state exam plus more. It's a must read if you're even thinking about cosmetology. You will then know if this career/hobby is for you.
