    Book Description

Interest in progressive education and feminist pedagogy has gained a significant following in current educational reform circles. Founding Mothers and Others examines the female founders of progressive schools and other female educational leaders in the early twentieth century and their schools or educational movements. All of the women led remarkable lives and their legacies are embedded in education today. The book examines the lessons to be learned from their work and their lives. The book also analyzes whether their leadership styles support contemporary feminist theories of leadership that argue women administrators tend to be more inclusive, democratic, and caring than male administrators. Through an examination of these women, this book looks critically at the ways in which the leaders' administrative styles and behaviors lend support to feminist claims.

            Book Description

Although most people think "Generation X" is a recently coined label for the post-Baby Boom generation, since the early 1950s the phrase has signified a seemingly identity-less group of young people trying to define themselves within an uncertain, even hostile world. GenXegesis: Essays on Alternative Youth (Sub)Culture is the first collection of critical essays on Generation X.

Resituating the term in its neglected (sub)cultural context, the contributors offer a critical assessment of the "Generation X" phenomenon and its relation to the fashioning of differing identities within and against the mainstream. The essays explore a variety of topics, including punk subculture, alternative music, reality television, postmodernism, and the Internet. Together, the contributors share a refreshingly self-conscious approach to Generation X's precarious, often paradoxical position as an alternative to the mainstream. This collection will be enjoyed by scholars, graduate and undergraduate students, and anyone interested in popular culture, including Gen-Xers themselves.

              5 out of 5 stars 62 Hints & Tips for the Intermediate/Advanced Programmer.......2005-03-11

Intended for the intermediate to advanced game programmer, this is a book that will literally have something for everyone. It contains sixty-two 'gems' that is, articles on how to some particular aspect of game programming. Sophisticated game programming is probably the most complex programming there is. And this book goes into some pretty sophisticated programming details.

              For instance:
4.2 Dynamic Grass Simulation - Just how does grass move when the wind is blowing
5.7 Rendering Gemstones - you can see through them, you can see highlights
5.2 Let it Snow - And how does the appearance of snow change if you are moving through it.

There is no question that the main driving force for faster computers is to make for more realistic gaming. And the faster computers allow more sophisticated programming to be done to make the grass wave realistically.

This is probably not a book you're going to sit down and read from cover to cover. You'll probably scan through and read the ones that are applicable to just what you need to do next. But then in a couple of weeks, in a couple of months....

"Montana: Behind the Scenes" has already found its place among my most treasured reads, and I haven't even finished reading the thing yet. I've read slightly beyond the first couple of chapters but felt the need to put in my two cents' worth about this delightful paperback even before I got past the Gumbo chapter (more on Gumbo later). I was captured first by the witty cover, and soon found myself going way beyond the posted speed limit just to get to the Gumbo. What is this Montanan-style Gumbo, you ask? It's not what you think. It's even better. Rest assured, you'll want more Gumbo than this brief chapter provides, but it'll whet your appetite for more Montana, Durrae-and-John-Johanek style. You don't have to live in Montana to appreciate this book, but reading it will make you want to put THIS trip on your travel planner. The sooner the better.

5 out of 5 stars The Montana you want to see and know!.......2002-02-05

Fantastic book that makes you want to get in your car, head to Montana, and then get off the interstate and out of the cities. The vignettes of the small towns, unusual places, and unique people give even the armchair travel a delightful tour, without even being there. Nice writing, an excellent read.

5 out of 5 stars Not your father's travel guide........2001-02-26

I'm a lifelong Texan, but my family and I have been vacationing in Montana off and on for many years. We've done all the standard tourist stops several times over. So this book provides just what we need. Here you will find the places and people that make Montana unique. You'll discover Joe, Montana (yes, it was). You'll drop in at the Jersey Lilly Saloon in Ingomar (pop. 10), home of internationally famous...uhh...beans. You'll visit the Fairview Bridge, which could accommodate trains and automobiles - just not both at once! You'll learn all about lefse, the potato-based, Norwegian version of tortillas. You'll stroll through an incredible rock-garden recreation of the Bible. You'll wander through the deserted streets of St. Marie - possibly the NEWEST ghost town in the U.S.

So if you want to know where stay along I-94 near Billings, or what size trailer can be accommodated at Hebgen Lake Campground, this is not your book. But you really want to get to know the state and its people, the Johaneks will take you there. All in all, it's an engagingly-written, idiosyncratic, informative and altogether charming book.

This is a fun look at the people and places of Montana. A must read for planning a trip to the state!

This is fun reading about quirky, off-beat places outside of the normal tourist attractions in this beautiful state. The authors obviously enjoy the unusual places, and give the reader the story behind the attractions. Many of these attractions will be must see on our next trip out west.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for George Thomas.......2003-06-10

When I first started studying the civil war nearly 30 years ago, one of my first thoughts was: "Why haven't I heard of George Thomas?'' There are those who argue, including Cleaves in several sections, that he was the most important Union general _ one list, in fact, makes him one of the five men (and the only military figure) most important in the North's victory. In the prewar Army, he served with Lee, another Virginian who wavered, and was close to being considered Lee's equal.

The reasons for Thomas' relative obscurity have been well stated in other reviews _ his southern heritage; his self-effacing disposition except (as Cleaves points out) when he felt he had been done an injustice. It didn't help that Sherman, one of his sponsors and Grant, his classmate at West Point, shut him out of the post-war glory and that he died in 1870, too early to establish a reputation.

Is the subtitle ("The Man who Save the Union?'') justified? Look at it this way: There's no question that Thomas' stand at Chickamauga made Sherman's campaign through Georgia possible. And if that hadn't happened, Lincoln might not have been re-elected in 1864, perhaps leading to a truce that would have left the nation split. That in itself is reason enough to celebrate Thomas.

But as Cleaves emphasizes, Thomas was more than that. Military historieans consider him one of the best defensive generals ever, a man who would have stood out in any war. And unlike many of our heroes, he was a decent man.

We could use more like him.

This 55-year-old book could use more readers.

4 out of 5 stars Informative Biography of an Overlooked General.......2003-05-09

Cleaves' book is an excellent read for the person who wishes to learn more about one of the best (North or South) and overlooked generals of the Civil War. While many books focus on Lee, Jackson, Grant, and Sherman, Cleaves succeeds in bringing to light the very important accomplishments by General Thomas.

Included in the book are Thomas' many military victories: the complete defeat of a Confederate army at the battles of Mill Springs and Nashville, repulse of Hood's attacks at Atlanta, and of course, perhaps his most stunning achievement - holding the Confederate Army at bay on Snodgrass Hill while the rest of the Union Army retreated from Chickamauga.

Throughout the book Cleaves describes Thomas as a man who willingly subordinated his desires for the best of the nation, something lacking in most "leaders" today. Several times Cleaves describes Thomas as a calm, confident, and not easily shaken man in whom soldiers took great comfort in knowing he was in charge.

I only wish there would have been more maps used when describing the many battles Thomas participated in. Doing so would have made it easier for me to follow the troop movements, whether in an individual battle or a campaign.

All in all, an excellent read of an excellent general and gentleman. Thomas was a refreshing change from the self-promoting methods other "leaders" in the 1860's practiced - he would still be a rare gem if he were alive in today's world!!!

Written over 52 years ago, this book is a ground breaking contribution to the Civil War's saga. It really is a must read for understanding the intricacies of the Union high command.

Union loyalists of Southern birth like Thomas, Buford, etc. were just as alone and alienated in their army as Southern loyalists of Northern birth like Pemberton. They suffered an ostracism, a fundamental distrust that really reached its peak in this country when we sent thousands and thousands of Japanese Americans to concentration camps in California in World War II while concurrently having their sons fight and die in Europe. Thomas' story is really no different and every bit as unfair.

This type of unfortunate, `protective tuck' is a natural reaction during a national emergency. Fortunately, leading edge historians like Freeman Cleaves have left us a record of one man's sacrifice for the country of his birth.

George Thomas was not treated properly by anyone, North or South. Lincoln treats him as a political liability and pawn, Stanton fundamentally distrusts everyone of Southern heritage, and the Union troika of Grant, Sherman and Sheridan have much to be ashamed of: Grant for his smallness, Sheridan for the desertion of someone who must have been his mentor and Sherman for betraying a long standing friendship. The South simply refused to acknowledge his existence. When Thomas was down, everyone kicked. Being Southern born, he was an easy competitive target for both sides both during and after the war. He simply had no mentor anywhere.

Yet this courageous fighter survives much political intrigue to not only save a complete Union army from annihilation, an army by the way that he did not personally command but could have, but also completely destroys the South's Army of Tennessee and possibly, just possibly, pulled Sherman and Grant's chestnuts out of the fire with his victories at Nashville and Franklin. Playing a key and fundamentally pivotal role in Grant and Sherman's grand strategy, after his success he is simply thrown aside like an old shoe and not just forgotten but treated miserably, like his very existence, success and support was an embarrassment to the Union military and political High Command.

Read this book! It is about an American patriot who sacrifices everything, his reputation, home, family and pre and post war friendships for the ability of the United States to develop into the world example it is today. It is the kind of story all Americans appreciate: doing the right thing while succeeding against all odds, foreign and domestic.

5 out of 5 stars well worth reading. More to this war than Grant & Sherman........1998-05-16

A brilliant leader of men, a brilliant tactician. Grant & Sherman had this mutual admiration relationship which did not allow them to give Thomas the credit he most justly deserves. This book sets the record straight, that's what history is all about..

                      4 out of 5 stars A true classic.......2007-06-01

A classic. What it does, it does extremely well, though the tone of 1950s restrained earnestness may not resonate with the Jon Stewart generation. Has a leisurely, careful but not pedantic, verbal development of the basic mathematics of probability (expectation, binomial and Normal distributions, law of large numbers and central limit theorem, statistical sampling) plus the classic stories (birthday paradox, coincidence anecdotes, Poisson's "cavalry deaths by horse kicks" data). In other words it picks out the interesting parts of a freshman college course. Readers in the Jon Stewart generation might prefer Struck by Lightning: The Curious World of Probabilities.

                      5 out of 5 stars delightful.......2007-03-20

A pleasant and insightful read. I finally understand Bayes theorem now in a practical sense. The idea of calling the chapter exercises 'puzzles' rather than 'problems' or 'exercises' is a good one - more math authors should adopt this convention I think.

                      3 out of 5 stars Good introduction - a bit dated.......2005-11-27

This is a great little book for self study and a springboard for further study. A lot of these Dover publications are a bit dated and sometimes not the most clearly written and this is no exception. (In their defense, though, they are often seminal works written by the actual practitioners in the field.) Still, though, the writer is fairly nontechnical and introduces the major concepts of probability in a thorough manner. He delves a bit into statistics and ends up with a chapter on gaming. Take the concepts of this book, throw in a little more stats and logic and you've got a good Spock in the making.

5 out of 5 stars A classic and one of my favorite books.......2005-10-03

Some years ago I got the idea that I could, by studying probability and statistics, work out a way to beat the Las Vegas bookies by betting on baseball games.

Hmm..., one might say. Well, I was young and while not exactly foolish, I was adventurous and liked challenges.

Anyway, I knew a little mathematics and a little probability, but it was only when I picked up this absolutely charming book and began to read it that I realized with a kind of glee and something akin to a thrill that I was about to learn something of great value.

Warren Weaver, a good friend, by the way, of Claude Shannon, the great information theory pioneer, has a wonderful gift for expression and an equally wonderful gift for explaining things clearly and making his subject matter exciting. And the engaging illustrations by Peg Hosford do nothing but add to the excitement.

From the very first words in the book, "This book is, in one sense, about thinking. About a certain way of thinking, that is...," I knew immediately what he meant and that I had stumbled upon exactly the sort of book I was looking for.

Weaver begins literally with "Thoughts about Thinking" and illustrates how probabilistic reasoning, as he calls it, is the only kind of reasoning that can help us answer certain kinds of questions, questions such as will it rain today? or is Alex Rodriguez, who hasn't had a hit in five at bats, due for a hit this time up? or "if I have my left lung removed, what is the chance that the cancer will really be cured?" (p. 28) He follows this with a most interesting short chapter on the history of probability, "The Birth of Lady Luck." And then he explains "The Concept of Mathematic Probability." His exposition was so clear and such a pleasure to read that I can still recall the delight I experienced in reading it for the first time.

In the chapter on "The Counting of Cases," Weaver gets down to the basics of compound events and the difference between combinations and permutations--knowledge that is necessary, for example, in order to analyze a game of chance, especially games involving dice or playing cards..

The next chapter covers independent events, and then there are some famous problems including the one involving dice throwing that the Chevalier de Mere presented to the celebrated French mathematician Blaise Pascal. Weaver had mentioned it earlier, noting that this historical problem from 1654 actually marked the above mentioned "birth of Lady Luck."

In other chapters Weaver introduces us to the law of large numbers and explains the "maturity of chances" fallacy and some other fallacies. He explains in a particularly clear and utterly convincing manner why the so-called Martingale system and other "doubling up" systems yield no advantage to the bettor, and why, if any given independent event is disadvantageous for the bettor, no system of betting on such events will ever lead to an advantage for the gambler. In the case of doubling your bet after each loss, Weaver shows that every time you win, you will be one unit ahead no matter how many times you double up--except for one very deadly proviso: Sooner or later you will run into a streak of losses that will wipe you out--or, run you up against the betting limit of the casino or whomever you are betting against, and you will have to eat your losses. It is simply a matter of the observing the powers of two: 2,4,8,16,32,64,128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16384, 32768, 65536.

In other words, if your betting unit is $100 and you decide to bet on National Football League games, betting $100 the first week, and if you lose doubling your bet to $200 the next week, and then to $400, the following week, etc., until you either win or the season ends, you will gain $100 for each time you win. Should you however run into a bad streak, say losing every week, you would lose $65,536 after the 16th game! (I have simplified this of course since, due to the bookie's vigorish, you actually have to wager $110 to win $100.)

If you double up on something like the throw of the dice at a casino where the odds of winning the bet are less than fifty-fifty, your chance of a ruinous streak is (markedly) increased.

A very interesting chapter is number XIII, "Rare Events, Coincidences, and Surprising Occurrences" where Weaver presents some of the coincidences he has experienced and collected over the years. He goes on to explain the nature of such rare events and gives a very interesting look at them from a mathematical point of view. One of the events is about a guy in Las Vegas who made an amazing 28 passes in a row at a dice table at the Desert Inn. He, cautious bettor that he was, made only about $750, while the side bettors made $150,000. Another event was thirteen spades having been dealt to a bridge player. Weaver discusses whether we should believe that this and some other very, very rare events could happen by chance.

Since reading this book, I have read a number of other popular books on probability, statistics and gambling, but I can say, as good as some of them were, none were nearly as exciting nor half as interesting as this book. As far as I am concerned Lady Luck is a classic of the genre, and more or less timeless.

As for the baseball betting...well, that's another story, but suffice it to say it ain't easy beating the spread.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, flowing, and surprisingly rigorous introduction.......2000-12-21

The main strength of Mr. Weaver's "Lady Luck" lies in its sheer readability. Mr. Weaver is very careful about presenting his arguments so that they may have maximum intuitive appeal, while at the same time refusing to compromise the mathematical rigor that is necessary to construct any serious theory of rudimentary probability. What is most important about the work is that it provides the reader an extremely entertaining and well written framework for thinking about questions of probability. A concept such as "independent random variable" which a mediocre statistics textbook may quickly skip is a surprisingly philosophically complicated idea, and has troubled academicians, let alone lay people. Mr. Weaver's work, far from being in any sense "slow," deals with how we are to take into account this very basic ideas that form the starting point to this particular area of the mathematical sciences. Finally, Mr. Weaver's references to distinctively late 50s early 60s phenomenon provide an entertaining look at the thoughts of the time.
