Okay! Wow! I devoured this book with ever-increasing hope that finally, a Leader in modern Judaism had finally "got" the idea that Jews had contributed the underlying values of Western Civilization and NOW it was time to come out of the closet and help this "Wounded World"- and, to stop just railing against hatred and violence, hunger and poverty, hypocrisy and corruption...that now it was time to once again contribute to civilization as responsible, caring Teachers of Humanity...to mend humanity!
But, the deeper I got into gonzoland, the more I saw a repeat of the old, automatic, "them-and-us" mentality...loathingly swiping at everyone from Jesus to Tom Cruise; from Rabbi Schneerson to Mick Jagger. The author's solution for the Elite People of this wounded world? - Join his cool club to keep alive a thousand years of old un-inspected solutions and rituals; to keep us smelling incense, looking good and going nowhere. However, I suspect that the author knows he is gleefully dicing with the devil and should get over his grumpiness, lift his game, and write a manual of how 12 million Jews can teach the remaining 6 billion schmucks the secret of success...to enroll the entire world into living a better, more productive, happy, ethical life! This must have been the most humorous book I ever read. Sometimes I've laughed so hard I cried. The things Modine Gunch does are hilarious, It's wonderfull. If you want to know the meaning of a good belly laugh read this book.

Probably the best thing available in its subject.......2002-07-23
Family reunions have a close connection with genealogy. Review of Actionscript Language Reference for Macromedia Flash 8
Introduction:
Actionscript Language Reference for Macromedia Flash 8 from Macromedia Press and Rew Riders is a "thick book" that every Flash Designer or Developer should have sitting next to the keyboard. But don't let the words "Macromedia Flash" fool you into thinking this book is about animation or designing in Flash. This is a no nonsense dictionary-style resource that provides a ton of information about the powerful scripting language behind Flash 8.
Because this is a reference book, I will be comparing the content to another book published by New Riders and Macromedia Press, Macromedia Flash MX 2004 Actionscript 2.0 Dictionary. These two books are very similar in content and I would consider the Flash 8 book to be the second
edition of the Flash MX 2004 book.
First the bad news:
Because I had previously read the Flash MX 2004 book, I was a little suprised to see that the Flash 8 book has omitted, in my opinion, some valualbe editorial content in the beginning of the book. The Flash MX 2004 book includes articles from Flash Community Leaders that helps to build a good foundation for the rest of the book. The second issue that I had while reviewing the Flash 8 book was that it was a bit harder to find the reference information I needed. This is because the Flash 8 book uses a different style to list the language elements that is a bit harder to read (see below example).

Flash 8 Language Reference: onData(LoadVars.onData handler)
The second example bunches up the information and provides redundant information, and the issue is compounded by the Font style that is used which a bit too "bubbly" and does not stand out as much as the font used in the Flash MX 2004 book.
Now for the good news:
While the lack of introductory content is a small issue, the Flash 8 book more than makes up for it with extra content added for each language element listed. The explanations have improved and I think the money spent on this book is given back by the greatly improved examples that are provided for each listing. There is not longer just a few lines of code for each example. The book now has extended examples that really help to explain how the language element should be used while.
Conclusion:
While there is room for improvement, this reference manual is full of examples that make up for any Issues that I have with the fonts and listing format. The depth of information is what makes this book a very valuable asset to own, and I would highly recommend picking up your own copy. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give this book an 8.5 and recommend it to any Flash Developer or Flash Designer looking for a reference manual on Actionscript for the Flash 8 environment.
Excellent Resource for all Flash 8 Developers.......2005-12-29
Bought this after upgrading from Flash MX 2004 Pro to Flash 8 in order to delve deeper into AS 2.0 and the new classes offered in Macromedia/Adobe's latest Flash release. This is the best resource I have found for any Flash release and has earned a permanent spot on my desk until I upgrade again.

THIS BOOK MAY SHATTER YOUR PERSPECTIVE!.......2007-09-27
If you truly believe that Western civilization is the worldwide and most complete civilization, while all others are parochial, then this book may shatter your perspective.
In "Inventing Western Civilization," Thomas C. Patterson suggested that "civilized people are obsessed with their uncivilized kin and neighbors--[so] they call them savages, barbarians or the `masses' who lack their polish, refinement, and sophistication; who... have moved en mass into their midst."
Patterson develops his argument and explores the idea of civilization in only five short chapters. He examines the constantly changing "social and political conditions in which civilization is produced and deployed."
The work questions conventional knowledge about the idea of western civilization created by white, male, elites to preserve and perpetuate their power in society.
Marvelous achievement! Quick, clear, and powerful!.......2003-11-30
In the short span of 123 pages, Thomas Patterson delivers a stunning and succinct overview of "Western civilization" and its encounters with "savages," different "races," and the Other. He recounts briefly yet movingly the Spanish onslaught of Native Americans, ancient Greek notions of barbarism, the British colonization of Ireland, and more.
But Patterson only gives the briefest sketch of these meetings--he is more concerned with the ever-changing ideologies with which some Europeans justify the wholesale looting, enslavement, murder, and colonization of others around the globe. He portrays conservative and liberal ideas, as well as racial and economic notions. He sketches the involvement of science with racism and colonialism, and he brings to life the deeply classist and sexist hatreds of Europeans elites--hatreds which easily translated into colonialism (inferiors and feminine types around the world "needed" to be ruled).
Remarkably, Patterson manages to find space for critiques of "civilization," both from within European societies and from those they encountered. In this way agency is not restricted to a few rich, White Europeans, and the dialogue is constant and contested.
I assigned this book to my upper division college students, and they comprehended and thrived on this book. It is quick, clear, and powerful--truly a marvelous contribution. I will surely assign it again. Highest recommendation!
this really makes you think.......2003-08-31
This book was an assigned book in my Introduction to Cultural Anthropology course. Although the premise of the book has nothing to do with the field of cultural anthro, reading it helped me put the notion of "civilization" and such ideas as "culture" and "race" into perspective. Definitely not a book to take to the beach, but a good read for those looking to expand their knowledge of political institutions.
