          4 out of 5 stars Renegade ninjas.......2004-06-04

Sanpei Shirato's, "Legend of Kamui" series is a highly entertaining and exciting look into the world of ninjas and feudal Japan. This first volume clocks in at 260+ pages, and although the story and visuals flow at a rapid pace readers will find great delight in the superb artwork and stunning attention to detail that is packed into every panel.

While vol. 1 is basically the tale of ex-ninjas on the run (as they are being hunted down by their former clans), Sanpei Shirato finds time to inject occassional bits of humor and melodrama which ultimately gives this action packed series warmth and emotion. Also of interest are footnotes explaining the Japanese names of various ninjitsu fighting techniques being used in the battle scenes.

4 out of 5 stars Battles and emotions.......2000-04-02

The Legend of Kamui is one of the rare Mangas that deal with fighting and battles without forgetting to tell a good story. Sanpei Shirato knows how to draw and to entertain. Certainly a Manga to start with.

          4 out of 5 stars A sad history.......2000-03-28

A very sad history, where Kamui must fight againts his fate: that every one he loves die. What seems to be a nice dream (peaceful life and the love of a woman, something he allways wanted) turned to a nigthmare when the ninjas came to the village. At first is very relaxig, considering the previous part of the saga, but soon the tension starts to build up until the final battle. This final battle vs a ninja as skilled as him is very well done, and can make you hold your breath until it finish.

          5 out of 5 stars Riotous read.......2001-08-15

Cathy Guisewite once commented that she has three sisters, but did not give her alter ego siblings because they're like "three women sharing a brain." After reading this book, it's utterly undeniable.

Mickey Guisewite, Cathy's sister, pens a hilarious tale of the modern woman, her career, her relationships, her home life, and why all of them are disastrous and conflicting. All in a style very reminiscent of her sister. Can you trust a girlfriend not to tell her husband about the shoulder pad that wandered down your chest? Can you angrily confront a man in the office without sniveling? Can you get a boyfriend to pick up a container of Windex? How do you choose one of the four million "white" paint chips? And what can you do when the fifteen pairs of shoes JUST DON'T MATCH the dress for the Big Meeting?

The real-life relatives and significant others resemble characters in Cathy as well (one can see from where the cartoonist gets her inspiration): the obsessively thrifty, why-aren't-you-married-dear mother, the golf-obsessed boyfriend, the father who arrives at the airport six hours early, the married friends who whip out ten thousand ugly baby photos, the friend she eats lunch with, and so forth.

Amusing anecdotes (that probably wouldn't be allowed in a strip) include the woman who shrieked "I'M NOT WEARING UNDERWEAR!" in a crowded party, and the gal who had to call her mom for help when her merry widow got caught in her bedspread. These tales of romance, food, and humiliation will make you laugh, cry, then laugh a bit more.

Micky Guisewite has a hilarious style and plenty of emotional crises to unload. Well worth the read, and the reread! (Illustrated with little one-panel cartoons by Cathy Guisewite--also hilarious! They're worth the book alone...)

          5 out of 5 stars Definitely a great book!.......2001-07-03

This book is so great! It's stories are clever, funny, and totally true. I've read it more times than I can remember, just because it always puts a smile on my face. Buy it. NOW.

          5 out of 5 stars Hysterically true!.......2000-03-17

I read this book and broke into LOUD gales of laughter on the F train. I bought 15 copies and sent them to my three sisters and all my closest female friends. They laughed harder. This is what it's like to be a single woman today. And even a not-so-single woman today.

5 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining, yet true........1999-09-30

I gave the book to my roommate when it first came out. We were both young professionals and we could relate to the book.

Although the book is a collection of anecdotals essays, I still quote them as pearls of wisdom.

          What a great read!

            Book Description

With surveillance cameras, chainlink fences, surprise searches and metal detectors our public schools increasingly resemble the military and prisons. The first book to focus on the intersections of militarization, corporations and education, Education as Enforcement shows how schooling has become the means through which the expansion of global corporate power is enforced. Whether through accountability and standards, school security, or other discipline based reforms, militarized education in the U.S. needs to be understood in relation to the enforcement of corporate economic imperatives and to a sense of "law and order" that pervades our popular culture. Such an understanding will enable the conception of strategies for renewing a spirit of public civic engagement and democratic responsibility.

Until we all realize that the schools have largely become vehicles for replicating the status-quo, for producing people who will follow orders and buy products, and maybe even increase prison populations, we will continue our cultural spiral downhill. This book and its very credible authors explain why we should be concerned.

                Book Description

ColdFusion has enjoyed widespread use among developers as a powerful, easy-to-learn platform for creating and deploying dynamic web applications. ColdFusion's simple, tag-based language makes it easy to handle basic tasks, like processing form data and querying databases, but the language is also powerful enough to deliver highly scalable, robust applications. And now that Macromedia has integrated ColdFusion into its MX family of technologies, ColdFusion is capable of interacting with Flash MX applications, which opens up even more possibilities. The first edition of this book has been praised as "the best reference book available on the subject." This new edition, Programming ColdFusion MX, 2nd Edition, goes even further, documenting new techniques for using ColdFusion MX 6.1 to develop and serve dynamic web page content. This exhaustive guide covers everything from the basics to advanced topics, with numerous examples that you can use for your own applications. Contents include: Programming ColdFusion MX, 2nd Edition, covers ColdFusion MX 6.1, the latest release of ColdFusion, and is packed with advanced strategies, insider hints, tips, and tricks for creating effective web applications. If you are a ColdFusion developer, you need this book to help you make the most out of ColdFusion MX.

-as read by member Kelly Young
This book assumes some advanced knowledge of coding techniques and advanced Web-based topics, which is fine for its targeted audience. Use of SQL examples I found very useful. I very much like the appendix references Tag Reference, Function Reference, Cold Fusion Resources. The author delivers a well-structured, systematic reference to ColdFusion; just what a developer needs to get the job done, also a handy reference to keep near the keyboard.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Coldfusion book for Beginners or Pros.......2004-12-16

This book seems to bring a whole new perspective on Coldfusion. I have been programming CF for approximately 2-3 years, and this just opened up more doors of CF functionality. For example it displays one of the best "homegrown" login examples I have ever seen. It also really goes into great detail on more advanced topics that other books seems to skate around. Once again, an incredible book for beginners and pros!!!

3 out of 5 stars Excell Adv. technical content, not instructional or complete.......2004-11-13

Overall the better of the dozen or more books on coldfusion mx in terms of development-quality reference material.

Almost all of the other books on the topic do a poor job of explaining ColdFusion MX in terms of an instructional blow-by-blow get from step 1 to step 30; where 1 is an architectural overview and by step 30 you have been "instructed" on the development of a featurable product.

This book assumes some advanced knowledge of coding technicques and advanced Web-based topics, which is fine for its targeted audience. It is not a complete Bible or Courseware-level instructional offering, by any stretch of the imagination.

Many CF MX offerings are too lite. This one is certainly not lite - it is rich in content that it does showcase, but I was disappointed when they got into the coding examples for T-SQL, but fell short by ending the topic prematurely. It also failed to give real-world examples of how SQL databases can be created, implemented and administered in a virtual capacity - as is the case with a lot of company's who do not host their own servers and do not Co-locate them either. Many, including ourselves, use a datacenter that offers industrial-grade servers that we share, and where the licensing doesn;t require me to sell my shild on the black market or a second-mortgage to pay for it

Many CF/DW texts fill their weak offerings in those subject areas (often cursory at best) with other Macromedia Applications, specifically Flash - and even these are cursory categories at best. If you don't grasp the underlying mechanics of how CF MX works, and how DW MX interfaces directly as an excellent WebDev toolset, Flash becomes so far outside the box as to make that content worthless as a resource.

All of these Macromedia offerings have their own (several hundred page) books devoted to them intimately, and still often fall short. Very few printed offerings (including this one) explicitly discuss combining DW MX for advanced design work (read: uber graphics, layout AND Database / e-commerce development/interaction...and I don't mean Access), along with DW MX's interfacing technologically with ColdFusion MX and T-SQL / SQL Server. My investigation required 2 resources: DreamWeaver MX Advanced (Towers, et al., PeachPit) and ColdFusion MX with DreamWeaver MX (David Golden, New Riders) - these were overall the "best" offerings I could find for this subject matter, although once under my belt, I will most certainly be looking forward to utilizing this book.

Hopefully someone will put all of the respective pieces together ( CF MX / DW MX / Database integration / e-commerce development). There are few (if any) that do so, or do it well - the material is just too broad and deep for most audiences. Macromedia's Web site and Developer Forums continue to be the goods in terms of supporting this - the best quality materials I have seen in a software development product to date, and a far superior approach from a content-finding and "usability" standpoint. Still difficult to find good server-level DW/CF/DB materails, with a focus on e-Commerce, though - even on the manufacturer's website. Macromedia is still tops in my book, though. Microsoft take note: If you want people to use your products and do it effectively to saturate the market and develop your IT Development base, you need to make your product offerings rich but workable at a basic level AND you must post up real-world examples that can be used as templates and starting points for that educational process - not just White papers and written (non-technical) case studies... Macromedia has this nailed, and it shows through the support and uber-cool feature sets, and in its real-world implementation guide by professional users of the technology that run it, use it, help develop it and teach it openly. Technology isn't supposed to a technical or administrative nightmare - which is sort of how I feel about Visual.Net at the moment. Adobe could also take a cue from Macromedia - it has probably the closest suite of product offerings that are usable, rish, and increibly flexible - and Version Cue is cool, but alas, GoLive sucks when it comes to DB integration and there is no Server infrastructure (or product available) to support scalability the way Macromedia's products do. If Adobe ever gets their ducks in a row in this regard, they will directly be a competitive force to be reckoned with, but until then ColdFusion MX reigns supreme, and if you know what you're doing, this book will pave the way to glory.

                5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2004-10-08

This is a terrific book. Hands down, one of the best on the market. It feels a bit "fresher" than the Ben Forta CF bible books.

                Well worth the purchase.

                Book Description

Historical landmarks, such as wars, coups, and revolutions, seem to arise under unique conditions. Indeed, what seems to distinguish history from the natural and social sciences is its inability to be dissected or generalized in any meaningful way. Yet even complex and large-scale events like the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolution can be broken down into their component parts, and, as Bertrand Roehner and Tony Syme show, these smaller modules are rarely unique to the events they collectively compose.

The aim of this book is to analyze clusters of similar "elementary" occurrences that serve as the building blocks of more global events. Making connections between seemingly unrelated case studies, Roehner and Syme apply scientific methodology to the analysis of history. Their book identifies the recurring patterns of behavior that shape the histories of different countries separated by vast stretches of time and space. Taking advantage of a broad wealth of historical evidence, the authors decipher what may be seen as a kind of genetic code of history.

5 out of 5 stars Making history into a science.......2002-10-27

Although the authors don't say it in such an
explicit way, the objective of the book is no
less than to make history into a science.
How do they aim to achieve such an
                ambitious goal?
They first observe that there can be no science of
single events. Single events can only be described (*).
This applies to the fall of one apple as well as to
the Great Depression of 1929. On the contrary, once
one has defined a set of similar events, then
one can begin to consider them in a comparative way,
figure out which features they share as opposed
to those that are merely incidental. For instance,
                there are many
differences in the fall of apples, leaves, hazelnuts
or peaches but these events all
share the fact that they are subject
to the influence of gravity. In short, once
one has defined a set of similar events, then
one can begin to do science.
Needless to say, the main difficulty is to define
sets of similar events in a meaningful way.
This is the main objective of the book. Each chapter
is devoted to defining one or several sets of similar
events which often reveals striking similarities.
For instance, it is shown that the street insurrections
that occurred in Paris in 1789, 1830, 1848 and 1870
                almost followed the same pattern.
When one is confronted with a "big event", such as the
American or the French Revolutions, the first step before
one can define sets of similar events is to break up
the big event into smaller (and simpler) components.
In short, by decomposing macrohistorical events into
their more elementary components, the authors
decipher what may be seen as a kind of GENETIC CODE
                of history.
In that view, nations and groups of people
have a repertoire based on their collective
memory and when time comes to act they draw (usually
without being aware of doing so) a sample of actions
                from that repertoire.
Once you have read this book you will no longer
listen to the news in the same way. Instead of
thinking of each event as single in its class, you
will be tempted to draw parallels. Has the civil war in
Kashmir something to do with the long struggle
                that occurred in Ireland?
                Well, perhaps in some way.
                "A superb and idea-filled book"
to cite the comments by John Markoff and Charles Tilly
which are listed on the back cover.
                An exciting read; highly recommended.

(*) Note that even if this description is done
in terms of a mathematical model this doesn't make
any difference. It will be no more
                than a description nonetheless.

Who was Elizabeth I's true father? Did Buckingham poison James I? And who was the Man in the Iron Mask?

These and a host of other tantalizing age-old mysteries that have caused speculation and scandal through the centuries are explored in this intriguing book. Using techniques of modern detection, Hugh Ross Williamson re-evaluates the evidence, examines character and motive, and uses the known facts of the cases to come up with solutions both intriguing and controversial. Shattering myths and propaganda, he exposes a grisly array of murder, lies, intrigue, and conspiracies. Discover the political frame-up surrounding the Gunpowder Plot, the secret identity of Charles I's executioner, Elizabeth I's involvement in the murder of her lover's wife, and much more.

4 out of 5 stars Accurate or Not? Don't Know, But Still an Interesting Book.......2003-11-08

[Warning] This penguin reprint book has been originally published as "Historical Enigmas" in 1974, and before that, partly as "Historical Whodunits" (1955) and "Enigmas of History" (1957). Beware before buying it.

The new title "Who Was the Man in the Iron Mask" is misleading, so let me correct it. The writer Hugh Ross Williamson, prolific novelist and historian (and many others), has written this interesting book about English history, in which he explores the scandals and gossips such as the speculated identity of the father of Elizabeth I, or the murderers of the princes in the Tower. So, the book is mainly about the history of England, not France.

                The contents are:
                1.History and the Writer
                2.The Death of William Rufus
                3.The Princes in the Tower
                4.The Identity of Perkin Warbeck
5.The Parentage of Queen Elizabeth I
                6.The Murder of Amy Robsart
                7.Holyrood and Kirk o'Field
                8.The Gowrie Conspiracy
                9.The Gunpowder Plot
10.The Murder of Sir Thomas Overbury
11.The Poisoning of King James I
                12.The Assassination of Colonel Rainsborough
13.The Executioner of King Charles I
                14.The Campden Wonder
15.The Mystery of James de la Cloche
16.The Man in the Iron Mask
17.The Murder of Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey
18.The Innocence of Sir John Fenwick
                19.The Appin Murder
                20.The Diamond Necklace
21.The Wives of King George IV

(Chap.1 is a rather preachy introduction you can skip over. Chap. 3 is indirectly about Richard III; Chap.16 is of course about the mysterious man in Dumas' famous novel (or DiCaprio's movie), and the proposed theory is certainly unique. Chap.19 concerns partly RL Stevenson's classic novel "Kidnapped"; and Chap.20 deals with the interesting case about the necklace which accelerated the downfall of Marie Antoinette, recently made into a picture starring Hilary Swank.)

And don't be wrong here. Williamson postulates, but never insists. Like many books on the truths of, say, Jack the Ripper, he shows many intriuging aspects of many well-known episodes in English history, but some people, especially academic historians, would find the book too clever. To his credit, Williamson, who seems to heartily dislike "textbook history" and "historical propagandas," does not offer any conclusive theories about these matters. He just suggests, but to some, too strongly.

It is true, however, that there were scandals and rumors surrounding these cases above, and people are still intrigued by the enigmas in history. And like the tantalizing questions such as "Who shot down the Red Baron?" or "What ever happened to the still missing author of "The Devil's Dictionary," the answers will never be revealed. This conclusion, Hugh Ross Williamson is, and all of us are, ready to accept.

Some complaints about this reprint. As there is no introduction attached to the text, we don't know whether or not new information has been unearthed since the original publication of the book. We need the opinions from the thrid party, hopefully from historians, but we are left alone to judge the authenticity of the book. (And this complaint goes to this Penguin Classic History series in general.)

I know I cannot use the book in history class in school, but still I find it very interesting. But I also know that I am no historian. Read it as a detective's dossier.

2 out of 5 stars Proven to be historically inaccurate!.......2003-10-29

I was thrilled to purchase this book, only to find-straight away-inaccuracies in its claim of Tudor history. Queen Elizabeth I was not bald, but rather wore wigs and many women shaved their heads, to give the appearance of a high forehead, a sign of high intelligence during this period. The claim that Smeaton was Elizabeth's real father is also a falsity. While this may have been titillating during the past 20 years, it is now just disappointing.

This is a very ellementary, almost jejune text. It is strictly for the non-mathematical & even non-logical! very few equations & full of obvious observations. Furthermore, it was originally written in 1939, before the advent of game theory, which it painfully lacks. The chapters on poker are also more or less useless since the element of bluffing is almost ignored. Game thoery books are a lot more fun. But for the totally unscientific (in fact, for those with a distinctly superstitious bent), this book may well be worthwhile, like some of Sagan's general-reader stuff.

                            Book Description

The imperative to protect the global environment poses a mix of problems for Gulf energy producers. Dependent as they are on revenues from oil sales, the Gulf states are bound to be affected by internationally adopted measures to combat global warming. In the interests of sustainable development, they have their own concerns about combining economic growth and resource management. Shortages of fresh water and protection of the Gulf eco-system call for multilateral cooperation. All of these issues received expert attention in a seminar organized by the Research and Studies Division of the Crown Prince Court in Abu Dhabi, in association with the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in November 1998. This book brings together the insights of the specialists assembled for that seminar and lays the groundwork for a strategy of sustainable development for the United Arab Emirates and its neighbors into the twenty-first century.
