Book Description
The core of this book consists of the provisions of "Subchapter J," the relevant portion of the Internal Revenue Code (sections 641 through 692), and its first priority is to give readers an understanding of those provisions and how they work. This text takes four distinct, but integrated, approaches. At the beginning of each section, the book presents assignments of carefully selected provisions of the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations. Following are one or more precedents (cases or rulings) dealing with the topic at hand accompanied by textual material that amplifies the topic by further analysis of the primary precedent(s), presentation of other precedents, or discussion of subsequent developments. Finally, numerous problems, where appropriate, allow the reader to apply the material to actual fact patterns.
The book is ideal for use in courses dealing with federal income taxation of trusts and estates. Those who wish to pursue tax policy will find ample material with which to work.

Book Description
Yo mama sucks.
For years, everyone has talked about yo mama, pointing out her failings in important areas such as appearance, mental capacity, and weight. Now, two researchers and retired sewer cartographers have spent over a decade investigating yo mama, assembling a wide range of evidence against her. They stalked, photographed, and studied the horrible woman who brought you into this world—yo mama—then compiled their findings.
The result is A PORTRAIT OF YO MAMA AS A YOUNG MAN. This unprecedented exposé proves once and for all that the woman who is arguably dearest to you in life—yo mama—is stupid, crazy, a failure, physically unattractive, deceitful, a bad mother to you, unthinkably overweight, and worthy of only ridicule and disdain. To make this case, the authors present you with graphs, field notes, charts, Mad Libs, and various primary source documents. Crying, you’ll learn what you never wanted to know from a text that is readable, contemptuous, and factual.
Here is some of the evidence you will find in A PORTRAIT OF YO MAMA AS A YOUNG MAN: yo mama’s résumé, her last will and testament, her internet searches, personals she has placed, e-mails yo mama wrote to you while you were in college, and numerous charts and graphs. From this thorough and authoritative work you will learn facts such as:
• Yo mama says “comprised” when she means “composed,” as in, “I am comprised mostly of grease and sugar.”
• Yo mama’s so lupine, she chases rabbits.
• I had sex with yo mama and it was horrible. Just a horrible, horrible time.
• Yo mama got two wishes from a genie.
• If nervous tics were pizzas, yo mama would have five pizzas that freak everybody out.
• And the opinions of a variety of observers, including a taxi driver (“Yo mama’s so stupid, she doesn’t know how to get to 4653 Greenwood Terrace”) and Nietzsche (“God is dead. Yo mama is just really decrepit-looking.”)
Drawing on a substantial research budget and the strong stomachs they acquired from working in America’s sewers, Andrew Barlow and Kent Roberts got closer to yo mama than anyone else ever has. They even experienced the infamous battle between yo mama's head lice and body lice of 1992. All in all, you will not find a better biography of yo mama. Authored by two of the funniest twentysomethings writing today, this absurdist take on the oldest joke in the book—the “yo mama” snap—is warped, witty, ironic, and, frankly, sad in places.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely odd, hilarious in parts, not for everyone.......2005-06-28
Depending on your sense of humor, this book may be what's termed in the industry as a "laff riot" or you may not get some of the jokes. The Onion famously tries to go over some reader's heads all of the time, but for the most part, this book doesn't use obscure references to make its jokes, just unnatural observations. If you like oblique humor, this may be right for you.
Smart and extremely funny.......2005-05-19
Very, very funny book. It's a play on the "yo mama" joke (a clever idea), but much of the humor transcends the concept. I have laughed out loud at this more times than I can count. Absurd insults appear along with witty twists on things like internet search wordings, kidspeak, Nietzsche, legalese--and it's all about, well, your mom (known to a lot of us as "yo mama"). Some of the short pieces are among the sharpest and strangest things I've ever seen. (Especially recommended are the e-mails from yo mama to you in college.) Overall laugh-out-loud hilarious, often sublime.
Decent...not great.......2005-05-16
Yes. It's one big, elaborate, exhaustively documented "yo mama" joke, complete with charts, graphs, diagrams, and even a family tree. The humor consists mainly of surreally oblique non-sequiturs and general oddness. The concept is actually funnier than the text itself; I found myself laughing more at the names of the chapters than at the jokes therein.
Still, it's an amusing read - just be aware that it's more likely to produce wry grins than fits of hysterical laughter.
Yo Mama joke stretched in new directions.......2005-04-27
"Portrait of Yo Mama as a Young Man" finds Andrew Barlow & Kent Roberts stretching the Yo Mama jokes in strange new directions previously unseen. For example, Yo Mama's resume (one of my personal favorites). Or the Yo Mama non-joke joke. "Yo Mama's so environmentally conscious, she recycles a great deal." Or jokes which are just plain odd. "Yo Mama's so February 24, 1993, she watches the 37th annual Grammy awards every night." ?! Or countless charts and graphs. Needless to say, the concept pays off in spades--the book is extremely funny.
Like "Fierce Pajamas" or Dave Barry's collections of columns, it makes sense to read this book a chapter at a time, as opposed to all in one sitting. Strongly recommended--humor writers to watch.
very entertaining.......2005-03-28
as amusing as the title would suggest. picked this up off my friend's coffee table with a laugh over the weekend, after initially mistaking it for the Joyce namesake.
a great meld of highbrow/lowbrow, completely irreverant of course. excellent book to read a chapter from when you need something fun to change your train of thought. imagine these guys had a good time writing this...
Book Description
In Narrated Films, Avrom Fleishman explores the distinctive literary techniques often used by filmmakers to tell their stories. Through close viewings of ingeniously paired films, Fleishman documents five narrational practices in the cinema: voice-over (Orpheus and Sunset Boulevard); dramatized narration, in which the film is a story that one character tells another (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Hiroshima Mon Amour); multiple narration, in which a number of characters tell the story that is the film (Rashomon and Zelig); written narration, whether through diaries or letters (Letter from an Unknown Woman and Diary of a Country Priest); and the cinematic version of interior monologue, which Fleishman terms mindscreen narration (Brief Encounter and Daybreak).
Book Description
Magic and Modernity is the first book to explore comparatively how magic—usually portrayed as the antithesis of the modern—is also something that is at home in modernity. “Magic” and “modernity” are rarely regarded as belonging together. Evolutionism regarded magic as quintessentially “unmodern.” Although psychologists and romantic artists have sometimes declared magic to be a human universal, few modern scholars in the humanities and social sciences have studied how modern culture and institutions incorporated and even produced magic.
This book is the first to adopt a comparative approach to the study of magic as something that has a place in modernity, and that helped to constitute modern society at local and global levels. The essays in this collection contribute to recent discussions in anthropology, cultural studies, comparative literature, history, and sociology that increasingly question the extent to which modern self-conceptions are accurate reflections of a state of affairs in the world rather than cultural interventions.

An excellent reference but..........2006-05-09
for anyone conducting an investigation, this is the epitome of a textbook reference book hybrid. The book provides a good overview of the most popular tools on the market and how to effectively use them during the investigative process, as well as legal requirements for evidence handling and tracking.
One of the book's best features is also one of it's biggest weaknesses: if you don't have access to at least one of the software packages demonstrated in the book, the book's value decreases substantially. Although not said in so many words, the implication is that if you don't have one of these tools, your investigation will be much more difficult, if not impossible.
Given the dryness and specificity of the writing, although the book is wellwritten, I would have trouble recommending it to anyone not currently already doing that type of work.
A VITAL reference book.......2005-09-28
This book has been an extremely valuable reference for me and my coworkers on any subject related to forensics that we have encountered in our investigations. This is the only book I've found that covers the laws of forensics as well as technical details of analysis. I strongly recommend this book to anyone that is involved in computer forensics.
Great Information in Familiar Hacking Exposed Format.......2005-09-06
I am never really disappointed in any of the Hacking Exposed series of books. While some of the information may be redundant or appear in other books from the series, Hacking Exposed more or less built, never mind set, the bar for this type of book and each book in the series does an admirable, if not exemplary job of conveying the intended information.
Following the familiar and proven style and format of the Hacking Exposed books, Davis, Philipp and Cowen explain the tools and techniques you need to understand to conduct a computer forensic investigation. They describe the issues and concerns you will face in establishing a chain of custody and ensuring that the evidence you collect will be admissable in a court of law and help you build a case.
Mishandling data and forensic evidence may sink your case before it starts so it is important to understand the legal processes that cover computer forensic investigations and how to get past the hurdles you come upon.
Forensic investigations are a particular interest to me and I found this book to be exceptionally informative and helpful in providing me with the tools and techniques I would need to conduct such an investigation.
Focus on commercial tools.......2005-06-13
I bought this book based upon the experience I had with other Hacking Exposed books... but this one has disappointed me
The examples are based on commercial tools only - while I'm certain that there are many open source tools available also.
The book contains more than 100 pages of forms and explanations of the legal process, which is nice, but not what I would have expected from a Hacking Exposed book
Excellent Explanations -- Very Easy to Use.......2005-04-25
I work on the security team in a large company and use this as a key reference when working investigations. We're understaffed, and investigations isn't my only focus. When I found out about this book I was excited about the familiar look and feel of a series I've humbly learned much from. IMHO, this book is an outstanding compliment to the arsenal of tools I use when I'm asked to help with investigations. In particular, I like the short and concise legal information and the breadth of topics covered in a short volume. I feel a lot of though went into this because the layout helps me focus on important issues. The book covers so many topics like cell phones, Internet logs, eMail, and Macintosh systems to large storage RAIDS, NAS and SANS. Tools are also covered, including some I knew about, and some I don't know how I lived without before reading this. I feel much more confident handling cases I'm asked to help with.
Book Description
Survivors of one of the fiercest battles of the war in the Pacific tell their dramatic stories in this collection of oral histories. Veterans from all the services--Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, Army, and Army Air Corps--are represented, everyone from infantrymen, machine gunners, and engineers to medics, airmen, and coxswains. Their vivid firsthand accounts of personal experiences explore the great variety of actions that made up the campaign to win Iwo Jima from the Japanese. Their descriptions of events add new dimensions to the history of the monumental battle. Ordinary young Americans thrown into extraordinary situations, they recall the details of battle as if it happened yesterday. Their recollections not only provide insight into military operations but reveal the effect that battle had on the course of their lives and the meaning it holds for them today.
Interviews with forty-five Iwo veterans were selected for this book, among them Angelo Bertelli, the 1943 Heisman Trophy winner, and Charles Lindberg, the last survivor of the first flag raising on Mt. Suribachi. Most accounts were recorded face to face, while others were sent to Kessler on tape or were handwritten. Their compelling stories about the reality of the battle honor the sacrifice of the 6,821 Marines, sailors, soldiers, and airmen who died at Iwo Jima. An informative introduction helps set the scene.
Customer Reviews:
Mildly Interesting.......2001-04-11
This book was mildly interesting. Doesn't rank with the oral histories written by Ambrose or Ryan.
A great book!.......1999-12-04
The stories and memories from the Iwo Jima veterans will make you laugh and cry. When I think about the "trail of beer cans," I wonder what other mischief these Marines were up to!

Terrific!.......2004-08-24
Thoughtful and engaging - this is a smart book that examines our relationship with the natural world -- and it takes on the question of how to find solace in times that can seem bleak - how to feel ALIVE in an age of extinction. This is a searching, seeking sort of book -- and it's a pleasure to embark on such a journey with the author.
