A great reference and place to revisit Two Moons.......2001-02-09
I've followed Elfquest since the days of the black and white oversize comincs, through the Marvel reprints, and then onto the Donning and other color volume reprints, back to the comics. The series has been around over 25 years and the multi-generational story can be hard to follow if you're gifted with something in the middle, or even luckier, all 15 volumes simulatenously. This is a great reference for that, and it helps with the nuances that might escape you on the first read. It's also good for the stuff that's gone out of print or is hard to find.
It's also a great reference for those us who just want to drift through the pages and enjoy. It's almost as good as re-reading the stories themselves if you don't have time to savor the story itself.
the book for the true elfquest fan.......2000-03-29
This book really helps you understand the characters and plot a lot more. if you are like me then this book is for you.
If you don't know what's going on this book is a must have.......1999-09-20
I got this book as a present and I'm glad I did. I had just gotten into elfquest and had no idea what was going on and this book gives summaries of events in the comics, past character, and present character summaries. It is very well written and pays great attention to detail.

Book Description
As he has proved in his previous collections, Laughter in Appalachia and Curing the Cross-Eyed Mule (co-edited with Loyal Jones), Billy Edd Wheeler has an ear for jokes. A singer-songwriter for more than four decades, he traded his fair share of them during recording sessions in Nashville, and the result is this book.

Book Description
Genetic science is about to radically alter our lives. Sooner than you can imagine, human beings will be capable of diagnosing their own illnesses, designating the sex of their children, even designing the food they eat -- all as easily as using a cell phone. Now is the time for every one of us to take control of our DNA, and one man is uniquely qualified to show us how: Glenn McGee, bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania, pioneer in the study of "home genetics," and the acknowledged wunderkind of the exciting world found at the nexus of life science and computer technology.
One of the most respected authorities in the field of genomics -- the study of the genetic "software" inside plants, animals, and us -- McGee takes us on an eye-opening journey behind the headlines and into the heart of this formidable cutting-edge science. Probing the far-ranging ethical and legal implications of genomic research, McGee tackles its most controversial and hotly debated aspects -- from patenting your DNA to genetic engineering at the supermarket -- and explodes unnecessary fears about this wondrous new knowledge.
We live in a brave new world.
Beyond Genetics provides us with the knowledge we need to take the right steps forward into tomorrow ... and beyond.
Customer Reviews:
Thought Provoking Yet Readable.......2006-01-12
McGee's predictions, while some may seem infeasible, are thought provoking and founded on ample research in today's biotechnology market.
As a student taking AP Biology, I found this book to be wholly readable; it touched on topics I've had to study, but no where did it become tedious or perplexing.
Are Designer Genes in Your Future?.......2004-02-10
McGee does an excellent job of sorting through the hype about genes and genetic engineering putting to bed some issues that seem to be frightening large amounts of people (like genetically modified food) and raising issues that do not appear to be on anyone's radar screen (patents issued to large, money-making corporations for YOUR genes). He explains in terms understandable by almost everyone why it matters that we look harder at what is being done and by whom. Too many articles on this topic today seem to concentrate on genetic manipulation that will pass on to future generations of plants or animals and thus be a major factor in evolution. But this book focuses on what can or can't be done with genes in the current generation, a much more clear and present danger (or benefit).
The only fault I could find with the book is that the subtitle might lead a person to believe he had more control over where, when and by whom genetic engineering will impact his life. Unless more of us get together to help craft policies and laws about the use of genetics, the answers will all come from those who stand to profit moneywise from your genes.

Book Description
This book explains how to write .NET 2.0 applications and services. It provides you with a clean slate, erasing the need for developing the COM, DCOM, COM+, or ActiveX components that used to be a necessity. Instead, you'll learn how to write .NET applications using C++/CLI.
This book is based on its highly successful predecessor, and bridges the gap between classic C++ and C++/CLI. Furthermore, this edition is based on the newest version of Visual Studio .NET (2005) and .NET Platform version 2.0. And all topic areas include specific code examples. By the end of the book, you will be proficient in developing .NET applications and services for both the Windows desktop and the Web.
Customer Reviews:
A computer language resource with some personality.......2007-02-22
As a person well-versed in C++ and looking to make a transition to the Managed world (the times they are a-changing), C++/CLI seemed to be the perfect language to take up. As this was one of the only books out when I took up this task, I decided to give it a shot.
Firstly, the material in this book is comprehensive. A simple look at the chapter list will quickly reveal this. The first 4 chapters or so will provide the reader with a solid base of new concepts, such as the handles, properties, and the managed heap. While none of this might be new to someone already within the .NET world, to a native C++ developer they're....well....they're like a foreign language. As this book is so encompassing, naturally, it is also looooong. One would surely struggle to get through the whole thing sequentially like one would do with so many other books. However, this book is laid out so that the reader can skip to any chapter after those first four and tackle the topic of his/her choice. As such, this book serves less as a structured learning environment so much as it does a reference. When you need it, go find it.
Secondly, as my title implies, the author has personality, and he shows it in his writing. This is a refreshing departure from so many dryly written books that are just trying to get the information across. The book doesn't read like stereo instructions, it reads like a guy sitting there telling you how to program. Books of the former nature often threaten to put the reader to sleep, which sort of defeats the purpose of the book. You shouldn't fall asleep with Fraser's book.
If I have one criticism about this book, it's that there aren't too many practical examples. While it does include copious amounts of code to show how things work, it would have been nice to have some real programs to do along with the chapters. A growing program that runs the length of the book might put this one over the top. Given the non-sequential nature of the book, and the fact that it covers so much may have made that an impossibility, but it would've been nice.
For someone making a transition from C++ like I did, this is a great resource to help the switch. I can't really speak for someone brand new to programming. Overall, this book probably deserves a 4.5, but I'm knocking off a half star for Fraser's admitted Dungeons and Dragons obsession. Geek test!
Amazingly well written.......2006-12-12
The book starts with the very basics and quickly moves to the important aspects, leaving nothing to be explained. It covers more than just code, including XML, windows services, web services, security, assemblies, and much more, giving readers a perfect understanding of Visual C++.Net and the Common Language Interface.
Just one more wrapper book.......2006-11-08
I did not like the book. I do not think it is for real C++ programmers. Unfortunately to my mind what is happening with .NET jump on the market that programmers looses the skills and start thinking in terms of wrappers where .NET just adds one more layer of it. It is nothing bad but I personally was looking for information what is happening at the core of .NET framework and not just to read how easy things can be done these days. Historically C++ books always meant to reveal the low level details but this book aligns C++/CLI with other .NET languages where no much difference exists between them.
Another rush to market book?.......2006-09-17
I don't know Forms.
I just learned MFC for C++.NET 2002
I have a hard time with Wizards (Dialog/Document/ADO/etc) and getting the handle of it.
I hardly know Windows programming (console C++ for me)
I have not read this book.
Subject to these qualifications, I plan on buying this book to see how it compares to Ivor Horton's books. In particular the "second half" of Horton's books, when he talks about programming using the GUIs and Wizards.
I hope this book is not one of those "rush to market" programming books that end up becoming expensive door stops.
Extensive Look at C++ 2.0.......2006-07-18
Pro Visual C++/CLI and the .NET 2.0 Platform by Stephen Fraser is an extensive look at C++ programming for the 2.0 platform. The thing that I like about this book is the focus on .NET C++ development under the 2.0 umbrella. Nice writing, lots of content, overall a nice addition to your C++ library.
Chapters covered:
01. Overview of .NET Framework
02. C++/CLI Basics
03. Object-Oriented programming with C++/CLI
04. Advanced C++/CLI
05. .NET Framework Class Library
06. Integrated XML Documentation
07. Collections
08. Input, Output, Serialization
09. Windows Forms Applications
10. Advanced Windows Forms Applications
11. Graphics with GDI+
12. ADO.NET
13. XML
14. Windows Services
15. Web Services
16. Multithreaded Programming
17. Network Programming
18. Assembly Programming
19. Security
20. Unsafte .NET C++/CLI Programming
21. Advanced Unmanaged C++/CLI Programming
Overall the word that stands out more than anything else about this book is THOROUGH. This is a thorough look at the source material and an entertaining and informative book for developers.
Enjoy!!!

Book Description
Against the backdrop of unprecedented concern for the future of health care, The Cambridge Illustrated History of Medicine surveys the rise of medicine in the West from classical times to the present. Covering both the social and scientific history of medicine, this lavishly illustrated volume traces the chronology of key developments and events, while at the same time engaging with the issues, discoveries, and controversies that have beset and characterized medical progress. The authors weave a narrative that connects disease, doctors, primary care, surgery, the rise of hospitals, drug treatment and pharmacology, mental illness and psychiatry. This volume emphasizes the crucial developments of the past 150 years, but also examines classical, medieval, and Islamic and East Asian medicine. Authoritative and accessible, The Cambridge Illustrated History of Medicine is for readers wanting a lively and informative introduction to medical history. Roy Porter is professor of the social history of medicine at the Wellcome Insitute for the History of Science. He has written or edited numerous books about the history of medicine, including Western Medical Tradition (with L. Conrad, Cambridge, 1995), Drugs and Narcotics in History (with M. Teich, Cambridge, 1995), The Greatest Benefit to Mankind (Norton, 1999), and The Creation of the Modern World (Norton, 2000).
Customer Reviews:
Good additional text to team up with your other medical books.......2007-08-24
This book was favorable in my opinion. It traces the history and interrelation of disease, health and medicine over more than 2000 years. It is a chronological sotry of the key developments and events in medical history from antiquity onwards, while at the same time engaging with the issues, discoveries and controversies that have beset and characterized medical progress.
The Chapters include: The hisory of disease, the rise of medicine, what is disease? Primary care, Medical science, Hospitals and surgery, drug treatment and the rise of drug use, mental illness, medicine, society, and the state and looking into the future for health care.
Good Overview, Broad Spectrum.......2002-04-28
I think this book offers a good overview of medical history with a fairly broad reach. It covers many different cultures and famous physicians with what seems to be a good historical account. It is fairly straightfoward reading that doesn't have much of the little historical tidbits that make some history of medicine texts really interesting. It read more like a good textbook and is a good starting place in your learning of medical history.
Well written, lavishly illustrated.......2001-01-09
I decided, given the variation in literature available, to read and review three books on medicine by Roy Porter at once. These are this one, the Cambridge Illustrated History: Medicine the other two are - "The Greatest Benefit of Mankind" and "Gout, the Patrician Maladay". I thought this was the best approach as people might be looking for a reference work to buy and trying to toss up between which one to get and what the advantages and disadvantages of buying one of these would be. Well for the first two of these. I read "Gout" because it offered a view of Porter's work in a more focussed subject in contrast with the two other generalised works. So if you are interested in comparing and contrasting you can read the other reviews on my review page. I've offered some comments on the other two works here in this review though.
The Cambridge History is divided into ten chapters, four of which have been written by Porter himself (he is editor of the whole book). Each chapter is independent of the others and follows one quite broad topic. This means you might read over the same historical period more than one chapter. The subjects include such as 'History of Disease', 'Rise in Medicine', 'Hospitals'
The great advantage of this book over the other two mentioned is that it has been liberally illustrated in both colour and black white pictures. They intersperse the text all the way through - and this sort of socio-medical history very much benefits from this sort of treatment. It provides both support for the text and makes for easy reading. The text itself isn't too bogged down in technically yawnable detail, Porter himself is pretty readable, but at the same time it is not a light-weight work written simply to gratify a tabloid market. Naturally, because of constraints of size, it is neither heavy on statistics, nor is their room to fully develop some of the historical points which are made. As a matter of interest I compared some subjects in this work with Porter's other book which he wrote a year later "The Greatest Benefit to Mankind". And in detail the 'The Greatest Benefit.." certainly wins out - but it is twice as long as this one so simply has more room to supply detail.
What I enjoyed most about this book is that it is; 1 - Lavishly illustrated and in colour.I'm not sure if a picture does indeed paint a thousand words, but it certainly provides a ready visual cue. 2 - I loved the inserts where subjects were dealt with in side-bars of short separate stories. These included things like 'Transience of Consumptive Beautry", "Nursing becomes professional", Black Death and various biographies.
It all goes to make it a better browsable read than the Greatest Benefit to Mankind - it is probably better for younger ages too who will enjoy the illustrations and the interspersing articles. It is difficult to make a decision, if you are choosing to buy one (Greatest Benefit vs Cambridge Illustrated) but I notice in soft cover both are quite reasonably priced. I think the illustrations win it for me in the end.
An excellente review of the "History of Medicine".......1999-05-03
As a general practitioner I always wanted a single,low-priced book on this subject, easy to read, complete, critical and very accurate. And I am not forgetting about the quality of the paper and the printing!! I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in knowing more about the birth, development, breakthroughs and actual state of the healing sciences.

I second that ............2005-04-13
Every word written in the review named "No praise is high enough..." on November 11, 1998 is absolutely and 100% true. I am not able to write a comprehensive review at the moment, but believe me when I say, what this anonymous reviewer wrote about the book is exactly how I felt about the book...exactly.
No praise is high enough..........1998-11-11
I have wished for a book like this all of my life; I thought I'd never find it. If only there existed authors in all areas of science (& other fields, for that matter) who could summarize the complexities & histories in their respective fields in such a fascinating, accessible, & eloquent way, the world would be a much better place; & if such books were made required reading in public schools & universities, citizens would be more informed & understand their world to a significantly greater extent. I would absolutely be "beside myself" in academic ecstasy, & would treasure all such books--but if asked which one I would take "if stranded alone on a desert island", it would be "Taming the Atom". I cried tears of joy while reading this book; this book facilitated my understanding of various concepts & realities that I could not have obtained otherwise without reading, processing, & synthesizing information from massive amounts of material (& I would not have had the time). I owe a debt (of gratitude) to Dr. von Baeyer which I can never repay; I thank him beyond words for having taken the time to exercise his talent for explanation, & presenting complex concepts & facts in such an accessible, enjoyable, engaging, & fascinating manner; lastly, his writing makes what is priceless, rare, & extremely difficult (aiding in the successful comprehension of a multitude of complex concepts via the written word) seem so easy. I appreciate his work more than I can express. I am in the process of acquiring every book he has written--they will be permanent "residents" in my library, & will be with me for the rest of my life. I am spreading the word of this man's wonderful talent to those who work in various bookstores, & anyone I encounter who has an interest in these sciences (chemistry & physics). If only I could be so fortunate as to have him as a professor, or be privileged to attend any lecture or seminar he might give... I thank him for a book that is so beautiful & important to me; I've loved science all of my life, & always asked "why" when examining the world around me--had a book like this been available to me as a child, I have no doubt that my life today would be very different. I plan to make sure that the public library in the city in which I grew up has a copy of every book Dr. von Baeyer has written, with the personal intention that any child in that city with an interest in science & the means to visit said library, has opportunities @ early comprehension of so much... I thank him & am deeply grateful for his having written this book...
