Book Description
Prior to the 1972 passage of Title IX, women's basketball was a minor sport in the United States. It was played for companies such as Cook's Goldblume Beer and Sunoco and for obscure colleges such as Iowa Wesleyan and Wayland Baptist, as part of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). But during the two generations of the mid-twentieth century, women's basketball improved and became more popular throughout the country. AAU All-Star teams dominated women's international basketball until the emergence of subsidized national teams in the 1960s.
The women who played on these AAU teams helped to lay the foundation for women's athletics today. Most of the teams came from central and southern states, and most of the players had rural origins. "Country girls" from Arkansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas enjoyed an elite basketball that was unknown to their city sisters. The AAU formed several successful international teams of gifted players that gained fame abroad but were anonymous at home. Until nearly the last quarter of the century, skilled women basketball players had only one option after high school: the AAU.
This is the history of these gifted women, their coaches, and their teams--their records, motivations, and personal stories. JUST FOR FUN is the first book to thoroughly explore the complex history of the Amateur Athletic Union's women's basketball program and to bring to light the four decades of women's basketball all but forgotten in the current success of women's athletics.

Good Book---Where's the Follow Through??.......2007-05-03
I have been a fan of Scott Travers books for a while now. When it came time to sell my collection after reading a few books, Mr. Travers who promotes himself and his firm throughout this particular book, was nowhere to be found. I followed the advice in this book and tried to contact Mr. Travers several times by phone and email to sell my collection valued at over $20K. After leaving messages on more than one occasion, I received a phone call inquiring on my collection, and explaining I would receive another phone call later. That phone call never came. All I would ask is that this author, who took time to write a book claiming to be the best of it's kind on the market, to follow through with his own words.
Perfect for the Beginner.......2007-02-16
I've decided to begin collecting and needed something to kick-start my hobby. This book appears to be a nice way to ease into it. It gives the basic grading systems and sound advice. It's not too detailed and covers what you might require as a novice. If you're considering US coins, get the "Red Book" as well for pricing and more info.
An excellent book on coin collections.......2006-05-28
Recently I had inherited a coin collection. Honestly, I basically knew very little about coin collecting. I found this book to be very informative, and very helpful in learning about this hobby. I like that Scott Travers writes in a no-nonsense style. He is easy to read, and better yet, easy to understand. I think he goes well to describe many aspects of coin collecting.
I like that the book takes it time in telling you about the grading of coins, where to purchase coins, and better yet the pitfalls and traps inexperienced people may fall into. I like the many pictures throughout the book and found them instrumental in understanding about grading, and how to look at coins for any possible defects.
I would recommend this book to the novice, as well as the more experienced coin collector. I think this book covers many aspects of coin collecting that everyone can gain knowledge from. This is definately the ideal book to pick up for someone who is interested in collecting coins.
Absolutely crucial info for anyone investing in U.S. coins!.......2006-02-15
OK, so I'm biased. I've known Scott Travers since he was a teenager, and I've worked professionally with him on a number of projects over the years, including this book. But I'm also a former consumer affairs reporter, former American Numismatic Association Consumer Education Committee Chair and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Better Business Bureau in Chicago. Yeah, I'm a big believer in consumer education and protection. That's exactly what Scott's new book provides: absolutely crucial information for anyone who wants to buy rare coins whether for future financial gain or just to make sure you're getting a good deal today.
At the February 2006 Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo I watched and listened as an unsuspecting "collector" who purchased several gold coins in an online auction was crushed to learn from several reputable dealers that his "MS68" Saint Gaudens was only MS64 at best and worth thousands less than the $8,000 he paid for it. If he'd read Scott's chapters about grading and online auctions he would have saved money --and grief.
Even if you don't buy five, six or seven-figure coins, this book will help save you or make you hundreds of dollars by knowing insiders' secrets about buying and selling even modestly priced coins. COINage Magazine's Senior Editor, Ed Reiter, called this new edition "...the gold standard for coin books on consumer protection and investment." I agree.

Don't expect too much from this helpful, easy read!.......2003-07-12
I've decided to add my, ahem, two cents worth, on this book because I have just finished reading another book by the same author titled 'How to make money in coins right now.' I resisted buying the latter because I suspected, rightfully as it turns out, that there would not be much new information contained in it; Mr. Travers has a tendency to rehash a lot of his admittedly valuable and well-reasoned information advice. This book covers a lot of ground, per the reviews below, much of it essential. The single most valuable section, to my mind, is the in-depth discussion of coin grades as used by the professionals, and a discussion of recent changes made in grading standards. Also helpful is the section discussing ways to spot coins that may not be as good as the 'look,' and why (toning, doctoring, cleaning, etc.). I definitely can recommend this book as a stand alone purchase but would steer the interested buyer to another of Mr. Travers' books titled 'How to make money in coins right now.' I say this only because each book covers a lot of the same ground but the other contains information crucial to the 'value' question that every coin collector has at the back of his mind. Either will do, however, I just don't recommend purchasing both: One or the other and spend the money you don't spend on a nice collectible coin.

Not enough bang for your buck.......2007-02-13
I thought this book was way overpriced for what I received. It looks like someone made it by themselves on a Xerox machine, certainly not worth the $60+ dollars I paid for it. The pictures actually look like photo copies.
You should be aware that this book is written for someone who is going to build out a data center facility from the ground up. I didn't think it was intended for the average data center person who rents floor space from a collocation provider and doesn't have a lot of control over the actual facilites themselves.
Not very many companies in this business can afford to build their own data centers and most, even the big companies, still rent space from a provider. Just keep that in mind when considering this book.
There is some good information in this book but in my opinion it isn't worth the money it cost to purchase it. Purchse at your own risk.
Great info, bad pictures.......2006-03-17
This book seems to be really informative so far. We're in the midst of designing a 700 square foot data center and there are a lot of great tips and tricks we never would have thought of in there.
My only complaint so far is the quality of the pictures. They're all black and white, which is fine, but they look like they've been photocopied about 20 times before they made it to the book. Very poor quality there for the price.
Excellent Source for Data Center Design Considerations.......2005-07-28
I am working on relocating a Data Center to a new building as part of a manufacturing environment. This book provided some valuable background information for selling why I needed things that aren't available in normal office environments. I was dealing with maintenance staff that has no experience with Data Centers and every penny I needed to spend on the increased power, HVAC and security requirements for the facility were a hard sell. This book helped me communicate those needs in a way they understood.
Hard to find information that is clearly presented.......2002-03-20
There is a large gap between IT data center operations and facilities management professionals. This book bridges that gap, at least on the IT side, by clearly explaining the issues and factors that need to be addressed for effective management of a data center that complies with local codes and regulations. Most IT professionals are unaware of the regulatory requirements with which a data center must comply - unless they've been shut down by a city inspector at which point the concept of reliability, availability and support becomes moot. This book provides a good education about this obscure topic, as well as everything else that a data center operations manager should know in order to do his or her job. This doesn't shift responsibilities away from facilities managers, but does give IT and facilities common ground and a shared understanding of each domains roles and responsibilities. Here's an example of why this is necessary: systems that need to be brought into production usually require platforms, storage and network connections. These consume power, environmental system capacity and require space, all of which are finite and all of which are governed by building, fire and safety codes. Many organizations order equipment first, then notify facilities, when the right way is to jointly plan and manage data center growth. This book provides the basis for doing this, and if followed by both IT and facilities, will ensure smooth and uninterrupted operations and proactive physical capacity management.
The book starts with data center design philosophy, giving the top ten design guidelines. This is followed with detailed design criteria that covers project issues, insurance and local building codes. While these are of more concern to facilities managers IT needs to be aware of their impact. It also discusses availability profiles, which does directly concern IT. Chapter 3 is also of direct interest to IT because it discusses physical and logical Security, facilities system monitoring and planning for expansion. In fact, this chapter is where IT and facilities professionals intersect.
Chapters 4 through 8 are of more interest to facilities professionals because the topics cover details such as physical capacities and resources, site selection and construction details, implementing raised floors, power distribution and HVAC. Despite the slant towards facilities, reading through these chapters will give IT data center managers insights into the challenges faced by facilities, and will offer a lot of information that can be used to develop safety plans and general housekeeping procedures.
The next chapters (9 through 12) are of interest to both IT and facilities, and cover network cabling infrastructure, shipping, receiving, and staging, hazards and environmental contaminants, codes and construction. These are areas in which IT and facilities need to closely collaborate.
This is the first book that covers data center facilities in a manner that IT professionals will find readable and understandable. It usually takes years of experience and reading facilities-focused materials of which only a fraction is applicable to gain the knowledge that the author provides.

Eugen Weber.......2005-12-21
If you are interested, Eugen Weber has recorded 15 hours of lectures on the Western Tradition on the following site
learner.org in the social studies category. He is fascinating to listen to and I really suggest having a look.
Insight Into History.......2000-04-04
This book is a list of primary sources on the major events of European History from the Renaissance to the present. Weber does a good job of presenting balanced viewpoints (except maybe in the case of evolution, where he's definitely pro) The works are a bit dry, but that's not his fault. Plus, he gives a quick summary of each author before presenting his work. Perfect for AP classes (as practice for DBQs)

Book Description
The gardener labors to harmonize nature's most subtle forms with his or her own most elaborate plans. Gardens present a succession of ever-rephrased dialogues between nature and culture, design and delight, work and play. Yet they are also mutable and fragile, vulnerable to the rigors of the changing seasons. The most stimulating thought and research on the history of the garden from the fifteenth century to the present day are organized chronologically here in sections that cover the humanist garden in Renaissance Italy; the Baroque garden and classical park; picturesque, arcadian, and sublime gardens of the Enlightenment; mazes, grottoes, and other curiosities; town and city parks; and even Disneyland. In each section, individual gardens are analyzed as paradigms of their type: the Hortus Palatinus in Heidelberg, the Parc Monceau in Paris, Stowe in England, and many others, including contemporary gardens designed by Roberto Burle Marx, Ian Hamilton Finlay, and Geoffrey Jellicoe. Many hitherto unrecorded examples are detailed, and well-known aspects of the history of the garden are reinterpreted from totally new perspectives. The essays are supported by paintings, reliefs, and drawings as well as figurative illustrations and photographs. A specially commissioned series of fifty-one plans of each epoch's most significant gardens completes this monumental survey of the evolution of the Western garden. Published in hardcover under the title The Architecture of Western Gardens.

Beautiful book, needs a better editor.......2006-02-15
I'm reading this book now and plan to refer back to it often. It is quite beautiful and laid out like my art history books from college.
The content is fascinating, tracking the history of garden and park design along with the social, artistic and political movements that influenced it. But I continue to be distracted by the ridiculously long run-on sentences, interrupted by unnecessary parenthetical explanations. The book could have used an editor whose goal was to make this a reader-friendly volume. After all, not all of us are only interested in the photos and illustrations!
I want the Versailles garden plan.......2001-10-19
I'm interested in versailles garden, so I want some special information about it's geometry. I'm the student of Architecture.
Book Description
Praised as Âthe man who put the fun into physics by the International Herald Tribune, Dr. Len Fisher has written an exceedingly lively and entertaining book on the science of everyday life. Following the routine of a normal day, Fisher shows how the seemingly mundane can provide insight into the most profound scientific questions. He explores the art and science of dunking, how to boil the perfect egg, how to tally a supermarket bill, the science behind hand tools, the secrets of haute cuisine, catching a ball and throwing a boomerang, bath (or beer) foam, the physics of sex and much more. With wit and aplomb, How to Dunk a Doughnut uses easy-to-digest concepts and a sense of humor to show nonscientists what science is really all about.
Customer Reviews:
Not as enthusiastic as the others.......2006-04-23
This book didn't work for me as well as it apparently did for others. I do think that it succeeds handily at two important things: showing how science is involved in everyday things, and showing that while we tend to think of science as an ivory-tower exercise for super-geniuses, much of science is actually a process involving intuition, experimentation, collaboration, persistence and luck that any reasonably intelligent person can contribute to if they are interested.
My problem with the book is that parts of what he talks about just didn't hold my interest well, e.g. How To Add Up A Supermarket Bill and The Art And Science Of Dunking. And Catch As Catch Can left me thinking that surely what happens in the human brain is quite different from the complex sort of computation he talks about.
I did like parts of the book, but I liked the book "The Secret House" better (although perhaps it is unfair to compare them because "The Secret House" does not dive so deeply into any topic).
Anecdotes tell of science's applicability to people.......2004-11-09
Dr. Fisher was award an IgNobel Prize in 1999 for his work on the physics of cookie dunking, and his How To Dunk A Doughnut extends his research into the everyday world in an effort to relate science to everyday life. Anecdotes tell of science's applicability to people, from beer foam and the meaning of life to chewing and its relationship to perceptions of taste. Even the most reluctant science reader will find these vignettes compelling reading.
A pleasure to read.......2004-02-14
It is very rare to find an author who writes with such enthusiasm about their subject, particularly in this kind of field. The information isn't just presented in a factual way, it is made into interesting accounts of the author's (sometimes failed) experiments, that can be related to tribulations of everyday life, such as knowing when the Sunday roast is cooked! As a student, I found this book very interesting and worthy of the highest praise.
Pepper and Handsprings.......2003-12-08
As a non-science oriented person, I found myself skipping around in this book, skimming parts about claw hammers and boomerangs, but reading the entire chapter on supermarket bills. Frankly, that doughnut on the cover got my attention, and the fact that I had just heard about the Ignobel Prize on the radio, which the author of this book won several years ago.
I enjoyed the chapter on The Physics of Sex, but had to read the notes to find out why a woman taking the antidepressant clomipramine supplemented her dosage with pepper. (You'll have to read it yourself, I don't want Amazon removing my review!)
In addition to making science more accessible, Fisher makes scientists seem more human. He describes colleagues of his reacting to successes by singing, shouting, and one who removed all his clothes and did a series of handsprings. Now that is a happy scientist.
The scientific mind at work .... and loving it.......2003-05-12
With an enthusiasm that is clearly contagious, the author applies scientific reasoning and methodology to better understand certain things in everyday life that we may take for granted. Topics that are examined under the microscope of the author's sharp and witty mind include: the science of cooking, the scientific principles behind tool usage, boomerang design and throwing, quick determination the cheapest supermarket, the physics of sex, and more. The author's excitement in describing his scientific approach to these matters stands out - much as an excited child describing the joys of discovering something new and wonderful, but in a clear, lucid, even funny, way. Complete with lots of diagrams and charts, this book is pleasure to read. The author has definitely succeeded in clearly illustrating how the scientific method and the scientific mind work, and all this in a most enjoyable way.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-07-24
This book, together with "The World of Robert Bateman" is one of the best wildlife art books ever published, and truly shows Bateman at his best. The later collections (especially the very last ones) don't even come close to the beauty of the paintings in these two books. In most paintings the animal is just one character, sometimes not even the main one, while the landscape and the surroundings (depicted in marvelous and maddening detail) almost always plays a central role. Here Bateman shows to be a master of the techniques he uses, and creates pictures of stunning beauty who truly come to life. Both books are highly highly recommended if you life "realistic" wildlife art.
Its re-appearance is perfect for collections who either don't have the original or find their lending copies worn........2007-02-03
THE ART OF ROBERT BATEMAN appears in its 25th anniversary edition to include text by Ramsay Derry and an introduction by noted ornithologist Roger Tory Peterson himself as it provides a stunning blend of full-page color wildlife images and accompanying artist profile. This was the artist's first book and cemented his career: its re-appearance is perfect for collections who either don't have the original or find their lending copies worn.
Art of Robert Bateman .......2007-01-23
I have 3 Bateman books all are special ,a book for everyone to enjoy
The Art of Robert Bateman is superb & endearing........2000-05-19
To see a Robert Bateman work is to glimpse a moment in Nature's time when an elk treks across a vast winter landscape of snow, conifers & mountains; or a stream bank where tender green plants glow against the moist earth & a minute bird perches; or a trumpeting bull elephant confronts you in a storm of dust. Roger Tory Peterson has written an expressive introduction & Ramsay Derry's profile of the artist makes good reading - especially as he's included a history of who Robert Bateman is; where he's lived; several works-in-progress sketches; photos of the artist in action & on location. A worthy addition to your library.
