The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.......2004-03-18

The old wounds of Europe reopen: geriatric fascists last seen in the 1930s hobble lethally into the late 20th century, settling old scores and detonating bombs to teach a new "decadent" generation the meaning of order. Who better to stop them than another group of old timers--former members of the International Brigades from the Spanish Civil War, reunited for a final battle of bullets and principles.

This is a serious graphic novel with high ambitions. In a couple of respects it manages brilliantly. The artwork by Enki Bilal is exquisitely nuanced; his line finds dignity and pain in these old faces, and like them his Europe is beautiful and decayed. Author Pierre Christin's story has the satisfying weight of verisimilitude--and thematically he really gets what has to be here for this tale to work: the bitter intercourse of the past and the present.

Flaws? Christin's large, mostly uninteresting cast is populated by Hollywood cut-outs (think a left-wing "Dirty Dozen," bereft of the charm). Though its intricacies and sweep are compelling, the plotting isn't above an occasional cheat. And for a presumed critique of zealotry, the book is maybe too fond of its zealots. That said, there's enough here to recommend The Black Order Brigade as a cautionary tale about the price of belief--and fighting fire with fire. It's just not the dramatic equal of either its social intelligence or its ravishing artwork.

The Definitive Graphic Novel.......2003-06-01

I can proudly say this is the toast of my graphic novel collection. In fact, I think this book defines the term "graphic novel". In its 78 pages, it spins itself like a true novel, with rich characterizations and complex set-pieces. True, there are lots of dialogues and voice-overs, but they never drag the story down. The story I won't reveal, but it reminded me of the Sam Peckinpah film "The Wild Bunch" in that the main protagonists are a bunch of men( and one woman ) well past their prime who assemble for one last job. Only, the job here is eliminating a bunch of equally old Fascist mercenaries. The bottom line is: If you are an admirer of mature graphic novels, buy this book. If not, stick to "X-Men".

Very disappointing and boring.......2003-02-16

I eagerly purchased this book, because I had found the Peter Principle to be a 'five star' delight. But, where the first book was distinguished for its wit, creativity, and originality (particularly with its being so in contrast to the 'positive thinking' approach), this one is stale and boring.

Peter borrowed the same tired self-help adages that one could find in any second rate magazine, throwing in the usual advice about the 'new food pyramid' and exercise. It was as far from original as it gets, and seemed to cater to current trends and cliches rather than demonstrate the least creativity.

It is written in a very professional, usable format demonstrating both an extensive knowledge of QB software and nonprofit accounting needs. It has been an invaluable tool for good nonprofit bookkeeping and accounting. Every nonprofit organization using QB needs this book!

QuickBooks for NonProfits.......2007-07-29

Quickooks is well designed for use by businesses that buy things from vendors, do some work , and then sell products to customers. The softwaare provides a good "homepage" from which the user can select which of the major transacions is to be enetered. If a nonprofit organization's income is mainly from contributions, the user must treat those donors as "customers;" if the nonprofit makes contributins to others, those recipients must be called "vendors." The QuickBooks instruction book (By Kathy Ivens) admits to this need for "translataion." This separate book for nonprofits (also by Kathy Ivens) really offers nothing more. The nonprofit "user" is tempted to buy this book, in the hope that it will tell how to get a better "home page" or how to get that "translation" done by the program.
A severe disappointment!

Not what I thought.......2007-06-02

In my opinion, this book is not very helpful for churchs. It is a general instruction guide for a commercial business application with some name changes to match non-profit terminology--just like the QuickBooks software itself. They are only modified versions of a business world software package designed to appeal to non-profits.

Quickbooks for NonProfits.......2007-05-19

I have used Quicken/Quickbooks for several years personally and have been very pleased with its ease of use and reporting functionality. Recently, I was confronted by a church deacon, who was questioning the appearance of some of the reports being provided to the finance committee and wanted suggestions as to how to "correctly" enter the data to get the information necessary for each "fund". They had been told repeatedly that it couldn't be done, that the program wasn't capable, etc. After reading several chapters of this book, I passed it on to the committee to review and as proof that they didn't need a more expensive program.

A myriad of important things........2003-11-04

I am taking a class on Armenian history. Both this book and the class is new. While the book shows a lot of signs that any first edition textbook would have, beyond its syntactical muddleness, it is an excellent book. Bournoutian is an excellent scholar, and gives a very detailed overview of Armenia's history up until the present day. In a few years this book may be obsolete due to the political climate which Armenia has always had, yet it has given an excellent view into a culture whose value and importance is not known about very well-- both by Armenians and non-Armenians. From it, I learned a great deal about a nation that I knew of (as I am not actually Armenian) but knew little about. It saddens me deeply that Armenian culture and history is not something people are taught about in American schools, as this fascinating group of people is almost never mentioned alongside contemporaries, and it is my personal hope that one day people will recognize Armenia past and present for her deserved significance.

Interesting science, with the additional movie clip thrown in.......2007-05-29

I teach earth science, and spend a great deal of time instructing my students on how to critically view the materials they see on tv and in the movies. Most of them have seen the Hollywood sensationalistic movies like Armageddon, The Core, Dante's Peak, and The Day After Tomorrow, but they often have questions about what is fact and what is fiction for the sake of selling a movie. This book does a good job of explaining the science behind the Great Ocean Conveyor Belt, and how it drives modern climate, and along with the description, it interjects the scenes from the movie, The Day After Tomorrow, that are based (sometimes accurately, and sometimes loosely) on those facts. It does digress a bit and talk about ancient civilizations and even postulates a bit about ancient and future life forms, but overall the beginning of the book serves as a good background for anyone interested in the science behind global warming triggering a future ice age due to disruptions in ocean currents.

Borderline hack-work.......2007-04-24

There are three different aspects in this book. Part of it is an argument that a technological human society previously existed and was wiped out something like 15,000 years ago. In this regard, the book borders on the absurd, not much better than the works by the "aliens-built-the-pyramids" crowd.

The second aspect is the end-of-the-world fictional narrative. Just watch the movie "The Day After Tomorrow." I think it was inspired by this book.

Lastly, there is a quasi-scientific attempt to explain how a rapid and drastic change in the global climate could occur. This would produce a global storm of biblical proportions that could usher in a new Ice Age. This would happen in a matter of months and not years (or decades).

Mildly interesting but, keep in mind: neither of these authors has any real credentials. I don't have much confidence in the science behind the claims but it's not a complete waste of time, if you like end-of-the-world books.

My 100-word book review.......2007-03-28

We normally think of rapid climate change occurring over decades, but could it happen in a matter of hours? The premise behind this book is that global warming could shut off the Gulf Stream and plunge the whole world into a new ice age. Although I find the evidence presented by Bell and Strieber not particularly compelling, climate science has many grey areas and I do not think such an event can ever be ruled out. If you are following the global warming debate and are also, like me, interested in ancient mysteries, you will find this an entertaining read.

Half twisted science , half disaster science fiction.......2007-02-27

Strangely enough they get some of it right, but like Hitler's lies about the Jews: every big lie has a foundation in some ordinary truth.
It does appear that rapid climate changes are upon us.
Will they produce sudden climate changes like the ones in this book?
It doesn't seem to likely. It might be preferable to the other runaway
train alternative where the CO2 build up continues until the earth turns in to another Venus. In either case the government may sometime later decide to try to do something besides give tax breaks to car companies and oil companies.
I can't say that scaring the pants off people is a very good idea either, but calling their attention as AL Gore has done is a good idea.
People should just get it right without ancient civilizations and
cataclysms that have consistently been proved to be wrong interpretations of the data.

More New Age Nonsense.......2007-02-19

This book is not a thesis, a university textbook, or a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, so don't expect it to read like one -- but what else would you expect from two radio talk show sensationalists whose specialty is to shock people with credulous storytales of the supernatural or paranormal? The Coming Global Superstorm is a "non-fictional" horror story about the sudden end of the world as we know it. That is so original...not! It makes for sensationalist reading that will keep you hanging onto the edge of your seat, but it will not educate you with any facts or logic. Their idea of "science" only consists of anecdotes and how the authors personally interpret those anecdotes. For example, a few frozen mammoths have been found frozen in mid-chew, so the authors quickly jump to conclusions and interpret this as proof of a sudden worldwide global freeze, instead of the more reasonable and documented sudden localized freezing. The "evidence" presented in each chapter explains nothing scientifically, so it is left up to your imagination to fill in the blanks. For example, nowhere does the book teach anything about how the climate works, it is just assumed that whichever way it works, it will somehow magically work whatever they tell you it will work. A great example of this is their the Earth's climate is like a rubber band "theory". That is such a nice visual but it explains absolutely nothing about how the Earth's climate "works like a rubber band". It is just a bunch of pseudoscientific fast food all wrapped up with pretty words and a pretty cover that makes for a quick read, but will just as quickly leave you hungering for something more intellectually stimulating and grounded in real life than this New Age nonsense.
