Jim's Journal...zen........2002-04-11
I have all the Jim's Journal books. They're great! Sure, they aren't for everybody...(It's just a comic strip......)
In any event Jim's Journal, for me, reveals the Zen moments present in everyday life. (Hint: life is lived in the details.)
Either you get it or you don't........2000-11-09
There's not much middle ground with Jim's Journal. You will love this book, or you will think it is the dumbest thing you ever read. In my opinion, Jim's Journal is probably one of the funniest cartoons of all time. I own all of his first five books and don't regret buying a single one of them.
Since when can't I expect my comedy spoon-fed to me?.......2000-02-15
*This is monkey_11 again* "Laughing on the inside?" Sounds like you need to talk with someone. I read your prescription, as it were, for the ideal way to absorb yourself in the world of Jim's Journal, and I have one question: are you getting a piece of Dikkers' pie? Buy all the books in the hopes of generating a chuckle or three? Who am I, Rockefeller? Shoot, I pay rent. Look, I mean no disrespect to Scott Dikkers, I love, love, love the Onion (Tuesday evenings when the website is updated is one of few high points in my small little life) and, in my estimation, anyone who doesn't like Our Dumb Century lacks intelligence, a sense of humor, or a measure of both, but inasmuch as all comedy is more or less brain gum, Jim's Journal is the comic equivalent of the kind we used to find packaged with our baseball cards, stale and flavorless. You'd pop it in your mouth because--oh boy, gum!--but minutes later, it's under a chair or on the street. I've got no real use for it. I like to do my laughing on the outside, and the Onion is one of few things that make me do so. As for Jim's Journal, well, I guess I'm just not the kind of person who fancies sitting by the window on a rainy afternoon with a cup of Earl Grey, thumbing through wistful recollections of the charming and fragile small moments we all experience but never share with each other. You want to do that, your eyes crinkling merrily as you laugh on the inside, fine, have a party in there. To everyone else I say tread carefully.
it's the "laugh inside" kind of funny.......1999-08-17
My friends and I are very addicted to the Jim's Journal books. The best way to read them is to purchase all of the books and read them in a row. It'll only take you about an hour, maybe two.
Jim's Journal was not meant to have a punchline. And that's part of what makes it so funny. It's just a guy drawing little scenes out of his life. He's not documenting the historic moments, but the little silliness that we all go through. When I read "I Went to College..." I would crack up in the middle of a frame because it reminded me so much of myself in college.
There are lots of cartoons out there that don't make you laugh at the last frame, like Zippy the Pinhead or Family Circus. This is one that makes you feel good, make you giggle, and somehow manages to completely engross you even though the topic is nothing.
HOW is this by the same guy responsible for The Onion???.......1999-02-04
Okay, first things first-- the star was only because I'm giving Dikkers the benefit of the doubt; the guy helped make The Onion what it is, and so I'll RELUCTANTLY allow the possibility that there's something here I just don't get. THAT PROVISO ASIDE, however, my reactions to the average Jim cartoon are usually as follows: A) Confusion-- I'm looking for a punchline, I'll often flip to the next page to see if there's some kind of payoff there. No dice, not ever. This leads to B) Puzzlement/Bewilderment-- who would bother to write a strip so decidedly UNfunny? The subsequent and obvious answer of 'Nobody, that's who," leads me to C) Disgust-- as I realize that the whole comic-reading process has been nothing but a waste of ink, paper, time, and my brain's electrical activity. Now, this is where it gets a little tricky (and is why I gave it that measly star). As I throw the book back down onto the bookstore shelf, I reach D) skepticism-- "Hang on, there must have been SOMETHING redeeming about Jim and his dull, mindless exploits..." This one is brief, however, and quickly gives way to E) Self-Doubt-- as I decide that I definitely can't justify the strip, and so I must be missing something; it must be ME not bringing enough to the table, as it were. A moment of reflection, a quick review of the strip, and we're soon revisting "C) Disgust" in its new incarnation of F) Re-Affirmed Disgust-- as I decide "No, I believe I AM smart enough; that simply WAS NOT funny." From here, I turn on my heel and walk away to begin the process of G) Forgetting It Ever Happened-- I'll try to put the whole thing behind me until I come across the damned comic again somewhere in public, in conversation, or on the Internet, at which point I'll waste even more of my time, breath and/or energy H) Venting. And that pretty much is the sum total of my thoughts on the Jim comic strips. But hey-- YOU have a go at it, I guess. See how you do with them. Me, I'm tired. I gotta go sit down for a while.

Hank does it again! He serves up how-to Texas-style! I am the biggest fan of "King of the Hill". I wanna get propane from Hank and learn Spanish from Peggy! I hope there'll be another book form the show.
More Help from the Heartland.......2000-04-01
Hank Hill's sophomore effort proves that he is going to be an author unlikely to disappear from the scene anytime soon.
His first how-to book gave us his unique insights on child-rearing, and now he has broadened the horizons to give us his personal take on the day to day care for the redneck soul.
With his straight-forward no-nonsense style, Hank comes through again, making WD-40 For The Soul a shoe in for the New York Times Bestseller list.
Recommended as highly as I recommend George W. Bush for President, this book is a must read.
Funniest book I've read in a long time.......2000-04-01
If you enjoy King of the Hill this is a must read. Even if you don't it will keep you laughing. I am from Texas and know people like the Hills. Everyone fed up with wussy self help books needs to read this book.

Book Description
With the rise of pride - national pride, gay pride, black pride, fat pride - shame, the "sickness of the soul," has acquired a bad reputation. While the repudiation of some forms and consequences of societal shame are undoubtedly necessary, Elspeth Probyn contends that this emotion is a powerful resource in rethinking who we are and who we want to be. When we blush, we are driven to question what we value about ourselves and why. Blush argues that we are all born with a capacity for shame, much as we are born with the capacity for anger or pride, and that shame, like these other emotions, can be good for us and reveal the good in us. Painfully introspective, shame demands that we question our actions and our relationship to others. Shame's physical manifestation - the blush - gives us away, connecting us to our humanity. What shames us says a great deal about our character as individuals and as a society, about our past and our desires for the future. Written in an engaging and personal style, Blush combines psychology and cultural criticism, sociology and popular science, to present a unique perspective on debates about the ethics and emotion of identity.

Good setting improperly chosen mechanics.......2006-12-05
The Castle Falkenstein setting is interesting and one can easily see why it was so popular with its Steampunkish magical Earth. That said the book is also a prime example of what was so wrong with many GURPS 3e (GURPS is now 4e) translations of other settings. Instead of using the existing Ritual Magic system in GURPS 3e Voodoo or Spirits Cambias instead tries an obvious kludge of the magic system in the GURPS 3e Basic set resulting in total incompatability with the rest of GURPS in terms of magic breaking the whole universal concept of GURPS. In fact the magic system is so imcomptatable and poorly explained that it would need to be scrapped and redone before that part of the book could even be used in a GURPS 4e game.
Outside of that everything else is top notch as one expects from a GURPS book. The races are easily used in either 3e or 4e GURPS and the setting has the rich detail one has come to expect.

Great Video Resource Guide.......2007-09-02
Jan Ozer's book was a great find for me. I needed to quickly edit digital interviews using Movie Maker 2 and this book gave me everything I needed (and more)! I jumped right in reading the chapters I needed--I'll save the "other stuff" for another day.
This is an excellent resource tool for my book shelf. I really like how the author took his own personal project and walked me through it from beginning to end, offering process and tips along the way.
I edited a professional looking video for the web--not bad for a first project!
Who cares! Books are borring.......2006-07-06
Download and research for movie maker effects, I found some decent transitions and title effects for movie maker :)
This Book is great. .......2005-09-17
Well did Jan Ozer. I really liked the Practical tips on shooting and editing in the beginning of the book. Great teaching from start to finish without jumping around. Nice and easy to understand visuals. I've studied graphic design and would recommend any Visual Quickstart Guide. (I tried Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2 Do Amazing Things! and Didn't like it. Not enough visuals, jumped around, and to much reading)
Movie Maker 2 Book Exceeds Expectations.......2004-09-17
Ozer's Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2 book delivers the Visual Quickstart that it promises! The book includes easy to follow instructions for everything that one can do with Movie Maker 2. Ozer's "voice" is friendly and instructive. The text in the book is accompanied by helpful screenshots on virtually every page.
I used this book with educators/trainers in a master's level course to teach them how to create digital video on the PC. My students and I agreed that the book was easy to understand, interesting to read, and thorough enough to answer our most technical questions.
I highly recommended this book for anyone using Movie Maker 2!!

Amphibians and Reptiles in Colorado, Revised Edition
ASIN: 0870815520 |
Book Description
Reflecting the conclusions of current taxonomic research and recognizing new species found in the state, these thoroughly updated guides offer the most complete and authoritative reference to the plants of Colorado. Both volumes explain basic terminology; discuss plant geography; and describe special botanical features of the mountain ranges, basins, and plains. Interesting anecdotes and introductions are given for each plant family, and hints on recognizing the largest families are provided as well. Each volume includes a complete glossary, indices to common and specific names, and hundreds of illustrations. Ideal both for the student and scientist, Colorado Flora: Eastern and Western Slopes, Third Edition are essential for readers interested in Colorado's plant life.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive.......2007-08-27
Brilliant guide. This is the one I turn to when all others have failed. No photos. Does have a lot of line drawings of species. But if this book is to be of any value to you, you have to learn to read the botanical keys. Best field guide for Colorado flora Eastern Slope though (flora meaning vegetation - you'll find a lot more than wildflowers in this book). Take note that there is a Western Slope version too.
A wonderful field flora.......2006-07-27
While in the Rockies I found this flora to be indespensible to sating my curiosity of the plants I came across. Its key is designed so that it can be used in the field, giving traits distinguishable by naked eye and hand lens rather than dissecting scope. It's also thorough of its coverage (especially compared to similar-sized flora of other areas, simply because the Colorado vegetation is a little more limited), and it was definately satisfying to be able to carry around so useful a book. (If you're looking for a picture ID guide, however, this isn't it. Like many flora, its drawings in the back are intended to confirm identification rather than as a flip-finder.)
Much Needed.......2006-05-11
This book is currently the bible for taxonomic nomenclature in CO. There is a significant amount of discussion when it comes to assigning names to various plants, but Dr. Weber presents a balanced approach that combines mainstream scientific thought with his own extensive field experience.
If one criticism could be made it would be that this flora only covers the Western Slope area. Hopefully Dr. Weber's publishers will see the value in supporting a more comprehensive volume that covers the Eastern slope as well.

Book Description
Western civilization as we know it today is not the end result of steady progress, but of series of revolutions. The radical departure from orthodox history that Nicholas Hagger takes is to show how all these-the Protestant Revolution, which in turn provided the idealogical foundations of the English, American, French and Russian-have their roots in ideas and influences that have hitherto been unexpressed, secret.
Customer Reviews:
Secret History of the West.......2007-08-14
I think this book contains quite a bit of historical information. If masons have led to the age of enlightenement and freedom of conscience ... well I think that is good.
What I can not agree (especially from a professor) is to use phrases like "it may be that he had met so and so" while referring to important events or (seemingly) facts. I say seemingly because of such phrases that are not exact and gives a taste of conjecture... Another point is that at very important junctures he refers to the book "the Scarlet and the Beast".This occurs too often. In a tretise such as this, I would expect a little more care to rely on different references. This is especially important when he refers to the Sion organisation and the masonic fraternity which he names Sion (rosicurian) freemasonry. As the order of Sion`s existance and story is a very controversial subject and many serious writers debate it in books and on the internet, I really would have liked to see it substantiated with more references.
Extremely Detailed.......2007-08-13
It seems to be factual at places and somewhat hyped at others. Basically rooted in fact, and presented in a flow of time. Excellent wrapup of euro history and influences.
Terribly Important; Absolutely Great!.......2007-04-26
I have just finished Nicholas Hagger's terribly interesting and important "Secret History of the West". And I am well pleased by the experience. Hagger's book is the most complete elaboration of the conspiratorial aspect of history in the period from the Renaissance to the Bolshevik Revolution that I have yet encountered. To put this in context, I have read thoroughly in this genre from Douglas Reed to Michael Hoffman and from Jim Maars and Nesta Webster to Father Denis Fahey and "Maurice Pinay". Although I don't necessarily agree with everything that Hagger records, I am nonetheless delighted with the thorough and logically sound work he has here rendered.
Hagger posits basically that revolutions, throughout the history of the West, have been fomented by occult, or secret, forces. And he proves this point quite conclusively. Even more, he does this is an extraordinarily interesting and even compelling manner.
The theme of this book differs only slightly from the wisdom I have gained from reading carefully Father Denis Fahey. The latter holds that the conspiracy is Satanic, with the Jewish nation and freemasonry as its human agents. Hagger posits that the conspiracy is Luciferian, and primarily directed by the various sects of freemasonry. This minor distinction detracts not in the least from the overall quality of this excellent work.
Mr. Hagger's description of the many conflicting factors surrounding the Bolshevik Revolution and its ultimate result, the Soviet Empire, was most enlightening. I must admit that I first rejected his analysis. But, on reflection, I have to say that his interpretation of these critical events is not only unique, but uniquely explanatory.
We are deeply indebted to Mr. Hagger for this outstanding work. And we look forward now to reading its sequel, "The Syndicate", by the same author. This is an oustanding book that we highly recommend.
By the way, we are also indebted to Amazon's recommendation system for enabling us to discover this important book. Absent this system, I might never have been aware of the very interesting and important work of Mr. Nicholas Hagger.
Don't Bother.......2006-10-21
While the book had some interesting historical information in it, it was just another "christian" hit piece against beliefs that do not coincide with their own. I found the book somewhat amusing in some respects. We are supposed to make the mental leap that because the Rosicrucians and Masons led us into the "age of enlightenment" they are supposed to be the "bad guys." HAHAHA. What a hoot!!
I really get tired of some of these conspiracy theories. Some of them make sense, but when one thinks about it, the tactics that they are using to "prove" some secret societies involvement with heinous groups can be applied to any group, including Christianity. It's ridiculous.
Unless you just want some historical information, don't bother buying this book.

Customer Reviews:
Covers the First Meeting With the Patent Attorney.......2005-08-18
Note the title -- for Scientists and Engineers. This is not an in depth text that will make you a patent attorney. This is also not a go get a patent yourself type book. This is an introduction to the process of getting a patent and what it is that you have after you get one.
When you work with a patent attorney, the first thing that he has to do is explain to you what you need to do, how you need to document things, the procedure that you're going to have to go through and a whole lot more. This procedure is long and tedious. If the lawyer has to sit and explain it to you, he's going to charge you a bunch. This book does that job for a lot less money, and probably does a better job.
There's one point that needs stressing. After you file for the patent, the application will be declined. This seems to be an unwritten rule of the Patent Office. If they reject it, you're supposed to refile if you think it's worth while. Sort of a test to see if you're serious.
Basic concepts in patent law covered by book........1997-09-08
This book covers the fundamental aspects of patents. The main emphasis is on the US patent system, with a lesser amount of material on Canadian and international patents in general. After a brief history of the patent system, major chapters cover, specifics of the US patent system, Canadian patent system, what are the requirements for an invention to be patented, interpretation of patents as technical literature, patents as legal documents, and what information is needed to defend a patent.
Summary information of the major steps in the current US patent procedurses is outlined. Along with this, a basic glossary rounds out the books contents.
Overall, the material is presented in a clear and consistent pattern. Not a lot of depth of discussion is presented in any one area. The author's intent was to give a brief introduction to the entire area of patents, their uses, limitations, and requirements rather than delve into the arcania of specifics.
The main audience is technical professionals that need a brief background introduction to some of the major concepts involved. The majority of examples are taken from chemical process, substance, and method patents
