Book Description

After contracting polio, six-year-old Mary Grimley became the nation's first "poster child," photographed with President Roosevelt at his Warm Springs rehabilitation center. But a close look at the photo reveals something else-this bold child is less than impressed with the role of poor crippled girl.

Mary Mason's life story records her triumph over the limits society sets for the disabled and her later discovery of another barrier-the sexism of friends, family, and even herself as she strives to become a respected scholar. Declared, "concise, clear, sensitive and beautifully written," by Library Journal, Mason's struggle is one of courage as she contends with the forces that seek to define and limit her.

Mary Grimley Mason lives in Arlington, Massachusetts.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptionally well written autobiography.......2001-02-15

Life Prints: A Memoir Of Healing And Discovery is the story of Mary Grimley, who at the age of 6 years became America's first "poster child", dining with President Roosevelt at the Warm Springs rehabilitation center and posing in her wheelchair for publicity shots. Mary went on to became a remarkable scholar in the 1950s and 60s, refusing to focus on her disability and making herself a part of the revolution of ideas. Mason has spent her life struggling against the common cultural prejudice against disabled people, including the sexism of mentors, friends, family, and even herself. It was only after many years of physical therapy and social isolation, that she could emerge from the social and psychological handicaps imposed upon her because of her physical disability to embrace feminism, discover her life's work, and come to terms with herself. Life Prints is a candid, revealing, informative, and exceptionally well written autobiography that is highly recommended for women's studies and disability issues reading lists.

5 out of 5 stars Rethinking disability.......2000-08-05

Mason's account of her extraordinarily rich and productive life--traveler, educator, writer as well as wife and mother--makes us question our conventional response to what constitutes a "disability." Despite her inability to walk without crutches, Mason covered more ground than many able-bodied contemporaries. The book is a revelation and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Disability/Ability and High Academic Achievement.......2000-08-03

This memoir is an inspiring insight into the personal life of a successful professor of English literature at a woman's college in Boston.

We gradually discover that her cheerful outward appearance at times masks a deep and profound private pain. The revelations in this book make it a spellbinding read.

5 out of 5 stars No pity here.......2000-07-10

The author tells a compelling story of life growing up female and disabled. We read a straightforward account of a child growing up in an era when women were supposed to marry and have children first and if necessary work to help support the family. As a disabled woman, there were no expectations that one could attract a man, physically give birth, raise children, or work in any meaningful way. Mary Mason did all of those things but nowhere in this book does she claim to be a superwoman. She moves through her life making choices, and as a scholar, reviewing them over time and finding her way to a truer sense of self. Her feminist beliefs are unimpeachable. Her move toward an understanding of her place in the turbulent world of the disability movement is honest: feminism came first and more easily in both a personal and political way. The movement toward a place in the world as a disabled person required more thought and analysis because there were fewer contemporaries with whom she could share her stories as a young woman. This book is a welcome addition to the genre of memoirs, but it in no way is a familiar story. It is news, and important news about the experience of living at the intersection of the feminist and disability movements at a time when both political bodies are in flux. You will not be bored by rhetoric though you will be challenged by Mason's manner of analyzing her family life, her work life, and her intellectual life, while staying true to her desire to tell her own personal story.

5 out of 5 stars A journey you don't want to miss.......2000-06-24

This wonderful book about healing and discovery should not be missed. It's incredibly well crafted. The story is fascinating, painful and uplifting.

Mary Mason, a critically acclaimed author and professor of English Literature bravely examines her own life to give an honest and revealing look at how our culture treats disabilities in particular women with disabilities.

I was completely engaged by this compelling story of this little girl growing up in the thirties with polio who overcame this incredible obstacle in addition to other tragedies to achieve success.

This book is an inspiration not only for women with disabilities but for all women. It examines the struggles we all face with tough odds to beat.

I highly reccommend it. It will touch you deeply.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Well intentioned but superficial........1998-05-21

Given that this is virtually the ONLY book in existence concerning women's ice hockey, I'd give this book a 5. The authors and publisher deserve plaudits for writing about this subject. On the downside, this book, when compared to objective standards of quality and editing, stands in need of improvement and could have benefited from further refinement. One example: One entire chapter is devoted to just one woman from the sport (out of many that could have been chosen) who blathers on and on and on about her views of ice hockey. (Who cares?) This chapter of the book reads as if the two writers just set a tape recorder down in front of the person and then typed everything she said verbatim. If I wanted to read a magazine interview, I could have gone elsewhere such as reading women's ice hockey stories and interviews in some of the hockey trade journals. A book is supposed to be a SYNTHESIS of various points of view. I appreciate the two authors showing me their raw interview material but this kind of self-promotion by one individual female ice hockey player belongs in an appendix at the BACK of the book, and NOT in a book chapter. Certainly everyone would agree that this kind of monologue by one single female ice hockey player SHOULD NOT HAVE CONSTITUTED AN ENTIRE BOOK CHAPTER! C'mon! Let's do some of our own writing and research. And what qualifications does this person have to presume to speak for the entire sport anyway? Second point of criticism: While the story of women's ice hockey is in part a story of sexism and the struggle between the sexes, I think the tone of the book and the title could have been less adversarial and resentful toward the existence of men's ice hockey. "Too Many Men on the Ice" makes it seem like a zero sum game. Can't men as well as women play the sport? The title suggests not. In fact, the title and the tone of the book suggest that there are "too many men on the ice" playing the sport to the exclusion of women. This is not what wome! n's ice hockey is about. There should be enough room in the sport for both men and women to play ice hockey. This isn't a war between the sexes. Women just want to be recognized and granted equal rights to train, get appropriate coaching, ice time, etcetera just like the men. Do the authors really believe that there are "too many men on the ice?" If so, I am disappointed in them as people and as female journalists and authors. The authors' book title and their hostile and adversarial tone toward male ice hockey players undercuts what these fine women players stand for: No one should be saying that there are "too many men on the ice!" Nor should anyone ever say that there are "too many women on the ice." There should be enough ice time for everyone who wants to play the sport. The book comes off as a well intentioned but somewhat superficial attempt to cover the sport. I suspect other writers will come along and pick up where these two left off. But nonetheless, hats off to these two young authors for devoting themselves to a worthy subject.

    Book Description

This book explores the political significance of aesthetic analysis in the context of cultural and film studies, and asks how political responsibility can be reconciled with the concept of the university as a democratic institution. Through detailed reference to Neil Jordan's film The Crying Game, Patrick McGee shows how film can be both a product of the culture industry and a critique of it. He analyzes the function of the university in producing interpretations of such highly political art forms and in determing the limits of critical discussion. McGee links Adorno with Derrida to provide a new route through cultural studies and the claims of political criticism.

Part exo-archaeological treatise and part cultural commentary, After The Martian Apocalypse is an uncompromising and groundbreaking perspective on a cosmic controversy that has perplexed scientists and astronomers for years. Here, Mac Tonnies details the latest Mars discoveries and their paradigm-toppling implications, offering strong new evidence that points to an extinct civilization on the Red Planet -- and explaining how our own survival may depend on confronting the strange and ancient truths to be found there. Facing the prospect of a previous intelligent extraterrestrial civilization, Tonnies portrays Mars as a scientific and cultural conundrum. He challenges orthodox notions of mankind's role in space -- and illuminates the imperative concept that to truly understand our own world, we must first understand our unsettling and enigmatic planetary neighbor.

5 out of 5 stars Review the evidence. Explore the possibilities........2004-09-01

To NASA's credit robotic space probes have returned thousands of fascinating images of the surface of Mars. In some of these images, certain unusual features, to some, appear to be artificial in origin, potential ancient artifacts of intelligent intervention. The growing body of evidence in support of theories of "artificiality" has been accompanied by a growing body of literature on the subject. Along with peer-reviewed journal articles and other technical papers, an excellent series of books has been published. These include Hoagland's Monuments of Mars, Carlotto's The Martian Enigmas and The Cydonia Controversy, the SPSR's The Case for the Face, and Jinks' The Monkey and the Tetrahedron to name a few. Mac Tonnies' After the Martian Apocalypse contributes significantly to this literature in that not only does he review the history of the research from his own unique perspective as others have, but also explores the possibilities and implications such a profound discovery would raise. Drawing on his expertise in science fiction, he uses thought experiments that provide the reader ideas and potential scenarios. Tonnies also investigates how the internet now serves an important role in the way ideas are born, evolve, die, then maybe reborn in what he calls "memespace". Well written, this book does very well to introduce the subject to the uninitiated while at the same time provide a thought-provoking journey into possibilities and implications for the well versed. I highly recommend the book.

3 out of 5 stars Review from an ACTUAL reader.......2004-08-24

I thought this book was just O.K. It is the third book I have read dealing with the Cydonia controversy. I've been a long time reader on Mac Tonnies website and I anxiously awaited the release of this book. After reading it i was somewhat disappointed. I am by no means an expert on this subject but I do research it quite often. Mac Tonnies seemed to write this book in a hurry, every time it started to get good the chapter would end. As i read the book i enjoyed it but had the feeling that Mac wanted to write more but lacked the knowledge of his subject manner. He also lacked any real personal theories which is what I was looking for in his book. His slamming of Hoagland was also very dissatisfying. I think he should stick to his website job or write more science fiction. My #1 recommended book on this topic is called "Cydonia, the secret chronicles of Mars", by David Flynn. His website is http://www.mt.net/~watcher/new you should check it out too. All in all this was a good read and if your at all intrested in the Cydonian Enigma than you should buy After the Martian Appocalypse. Its a cheap price and definately worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Making contact with the Martian new vision.......2004-08-09

More than twenty years ago, the Viking I and II spacecrafts initiated an era of sensational and mysterious discoveries about the red planet. These new mass of alien information has not been fully understood nor explained satisfactorily by the mainstream scientists. How to perceive and understand alien life or even alien intelligence? Mac Tonnies showed with this book that he is one of the exponents of the so called internet micro culture of hobbyists (his words), authors and independent researchers who are successfully giving a consistent alternate vision of the Martian and many other extraterrestrial mysteries. This book is inspired, dense with a multitude of new accessible ideas and showed that it is set to become the basic introductory handbook of the next step of the human evolution. If we fail to democratically understand what is going to come, to expand our intelligence, and at the same time to preserve our good moral and feelings, we will not deserve the future, we will probably die as a technological civilization. Planet Mars is gently showing us the right way to the stars. If you want to take the red pill, read this book. Don't be afraid, the future belongs to the mind opened courageous guys.

5 out of 5 stars Tonnies goes where NASA fears to tread!.......2004-08-04

Do you want to learn what NASA is afraid to tell us? Do you want to see what is really on Mars? You are not afraid of challenging your beliefs are you? Good! Now go purchase Mac Tonnies' exceptional book which reveals the secrets of Mars that are contained in NASA's own photographs. Not only is Mac a brilliant writer but he presents his case for the probablity of artificial artifacts on the red planet with the skill of a trial attorney. His arguments are objective and relevent - his conclusions are intelligent and logical. With Tonnies' book you will take a revealing trip to Mars - and you will go first class!

3 out of 5 stars great starter for a big game but you need your comon sense.......2007-05-09

Using a strategy guide used to be only as a take-off platform for an otherwise difficult game, Ultima V: Paths of Destiny had no walktrhu but got you oriented right. This book goes in to far too much detail about how you "should do this " and you Must make your thief/spy "this" way and so forth, pretty commonplace now as people cannot think for themselves, but this was not acceptable when published. The best part of this book(avoid the chapters dealing with plots and sub plots) is the actuall STRATIGY involved in a beginning adventuer. The tips for starting out of Priv Hold are right here! Once you can actually last ten seconds out there, you don't really need the book. Banking and management are hard yes and developement is a little odd(in '97 people wern't familiar with the character dev system) since the instruction manual does nothing to document actuall developement STRATIGY, this book is a must for a beginner to the odd ball system. You dev 10 like-minded skills and sleep on it promptly.(no napping in between as I understood-this was fixed in Morrowind and Oblivion). The clubs and factions are also important(more so!) and also quick tips(not necessarily power gaming just first time survival) are very good for the weakling level 1 guy. Going in a graveyard to loot treasure,,,, repeatedly, isn't powergaming if the game it'self is a glitch pile! Other than "first time in towne, buddy?" avoid the other chapters. Your 30 HP barbarian with mithril rings on his fingers and ebony dagger encrusted bells on his toes, 60 speed, and all +1 bonuses to abilities isn't necessary(IMO) And don't let the book intimidate you into the YOU MUST DO IT THAT WAY OR DIE! You don't need to worry about maxing the game speed either but if you do you can fight even at max and a less-than bellsn'whistles speed rating! It's just more challenging that way! It just isn't role playing if you max speed and agility for all classes you play. You can actully get pretty far in the game with a normal stratigy or comon sense and perserverence, it's a game! it's supposed to be a challenge!(let the trolls kill ya a few times then rethink, like in the old days!) THe powergamng chapter is nice and thier is a warning not to read it(I sugesst heeding it!) if you don't powergame in RPG's, but the other "tips" in the "Character Developement sect" in particular, are just as bad. I give it a mediocre rating but not bad. IF you don't get my shorthand, you are STOAP'ih'T! don't bother commenting or "axing me what'z bout anyway(s). you have no wieght to your words! 'K bye!

4 out of 5 stars a great strategy guide for an excellent game!.......1998-11-22

This stragegy guide has almost everything an rpg player would need to finish daggerfall. This book gives you strategy and tips on fighting monsters, customizing your own character, dungeon crawling, the problems of everyday life, from politics to killing, and many other tips and strategies that help the gamer enjoy daggerfall to their utmost capacity. My only complaint is that the book contains no maps on the important dungeons such as castle sentinel or castle wayrest. my advice is get this book if you can find it. in addition get the official strategy guide entitled DAGGERFALL CHRONICLES. Normally it's better to get the official strategy guides as opposed to the unofficial ones. However, Daggerfall Unauthorized Strategy Guide has more strategy, tactics, and player insights than the official guide, but the official guide has all the necessary maps. The bottom line is: if you need tips to finish the game, buy this book ASAP! If all you care about are easy ways to walkthrough dungeons, then stick with the official guide. The official guide, however, is also out of print.

This could never be called a casual read, but it is a good read. I've spent much time in the Group Policy book, pair that book with Stanek's Windows Server 2003 Inside Out and you have everything you need to master Active Directory and Windows. Recommended.

This set provides the "missing" instruction book for Server 2003. It is full of helps, hints, and workarounds, written by experts. I cannot imagine trying to maintain a Server 2003 network of any size without these books on your shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not for the novice.......2005-08-22

I am learning about Windows Server for the first time and bought this set as a comprehensive guide. It is not for the novice or the faint hearted. It is tough to follow and goes in to great depth at times. The books are uneven in standard with some just taking you through the wizards and others assuming you can program. Useful to have but requires a lot of effort from the reader. You will need to work hard at it.

Worth every penny. This is a massive collection of harder to find resources to help you in your job as a Windows Server 2003 Systems Administrator. Book Description

Can human history as a whole be interpreted in any meaningful way? Has there been real progress between stone age and space age? Does history repeat itself? Is there evidence of divine providence? Questions such as these have fascinated thinkers, and some of the greatest philosophers, notably Kant and Hegel, have turned their minds to philosophical history. As a branch of philosophy, however, it has received little attention in the analytical tradition. This pioneering work aims to bring the methods of analytical philosophy to the critical examination of some of these questions. In addition to Hegel and Kant, the discussion ranges over the writings of Augustine, Machiavelli, and Alasdair MacIntyre. The ideas of historical progress, secularization and the decline of religion, cultural cycles, historical rupture and God in history are all subjected to careful analysis. Gordon Graham argues that, although unfashionable, the claim that history is the story of progress under the guidance of providence is one of the most plausible accounts of the shape of the past.

          Book Description

These essays contribute to the debate between those who believe that the African origin of blacks in western society is central to their identity and outlook and those who deny that proposition. The contributors ponder the key questions underlying that controversy. Their 33 essays are divided into five main parts: The Diaspora: Orientation and Determinations; Addressing the Constraints; Race, Gender, and Image; Creativity, Spirituality, and Identity; and Reconnecting with Africa.

You don't need expensive instruments to appreciate the beauty of the night sky, as Bob Berman exuberantly demonstrates in Secrets of the Night Sky. Berman takes you on a tour of the night sky, pointing out its highlights and its history, along with a wealth of practical tips and tricks, such as how to categorize satellites that appear overhead. Secrets of the Night Sky is not only a how-to manual for enjoying the celestial sphere but is also a painless introduction to the science of cosmology. With a flair for analogies, Berman imparts a visceral understanding of the scale of stellar objects. And in case your explorations do lead you to buy a telescope, the book's appendices contain a variety of no-nonsense advice that may save you from getting fleeced.

5 out of 5 stars A great basic astronomy read for the casual observer........2006-01-30

I first read this book when in the Navy stationed in Japan, I would read it on the train to and from Tokyo and Yokosuka. It was light, enjoyable reading about what you can see in the night sky. Now I am reading again to refresh my memory of constellations, stars, Jupiters moons and how to see satellites. My daughter loves stars and I want to refresh my basic knowlege so I can stimulate her curiosity as we view the sights together. I cannot think of a better text to do so. It is a quick read and filled with intersting facts about spacial relationships, space travel and just the magnitude of it all. If there is a down spot it would be the frequent analogies of size and distance which really become meaningless after a point. Still the text will give the lay reader a vocubulary and understanding of the night sky in an easy to read, fun text, what more can you ask for?

              5 out of 5 stars Great author........2005-02-24

This book is one of the most informative and entertaining I have ever read. The author provides the information is such a way that you want to keep reading about why there are really more than 24 hours in a day. Anyway, it's a great book, very interesting, very well written. Buy it.

              5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2003-09-18

I have been in amateur astronomy for 15 years, and this is one of my favorite books, for beginner or astronomy hobbyist. This is, mercifully, NOT a textbook. You can learn your way around the sky with Raymo's "365 Starry Nights" (also an excellent book), but Berman supplies the humor. The beauty of the night sky is, unfortunatly, a "secret," as few people know anything about it! Let Bob Berman describe the scene up there, get yourself a star chart, and get outdoors!

2 out of 5 stars General knowledge only.......2003-06-14

This book is probably intended for the vast masses that want and look for general information about the universe. The writer indeed contribute a little bit of amazing information about the sizes of stars but many pages are wasted on tidbits which contribute nothing for the science of astronomy. The book is written in light English with not so many words in every page. The diagrams and pictures are of a very low quality and it is very difficult to understand the names of the stars in the diagrams. The pictures are simply disappointing and the paper quality is low as well. The book is as far as possible from a scientific book. Don't come closer to this book if you are after the science of astronomy.

Very good book for the lovers of sky , especially at night..
beautiful examination and imagination... lovely and kind
